Résumé : The Ile du Grand Connetable nature reserve is a rocky island off the Northern Atlantic coast of South America that hosts a unique population of Magnificent Frigatebirds (Fregata, magnificens, Pelecaniformes). A high chick mortality, associated with nodular proliferative lesions, involving featherless areas, such as legs, neck, eyelids, and beak, was recorded during a consecutive 2 yr and affected almost half of the generation. Investigations were therefore, conducted to determine the cause of these epidemics. Although histopathologic investigations suggested that malnutrition, because of fewer resources in the Frigates' fishing area, could be the cause of the epidemic, it novel alphaherpesvirus, tentatively called Fregata magnificens herpesvirus, was detected in cutaneous crusts on the diseased birds. Although in this study, we do not prove the causal link of this new virus to the symptoms observed, it can nevertheless be suggested that in debilitated hosts, it productive herpesvirus infection might accelerate, and/or be accelerated by, population declines. These results emphasize the need to take into consideration the possible role of herpesviruses in weakened populations of wild birds in conservation management plans.

Purpose Human papillomavirus (HPV) is known to play a role in the development of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) and to date, no study has reported on the association between oral HPV infection and HNSCC in the Caribbean. The objective was to determine the prevalence of oral HPV infection in the French West Indies (FWI), overall and by HPV genotype, among HNSCC cases and healthy population controls. Method We used data from a population-based case-control study conducted in the FWI. The prevalence of oral HPV was estimated separately among 100 HNSCC cases (mean age 59 years) and 308 population controls (mean age 57 years). Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using a logistic regression adjusting for age, sex, tobacco, and alcohol consumption, to assess the association between oral HPV infection and HNSCC. Results Prevalence of oral HPV infections was 26% in controls (30% in men and 14% in women) and 36% in HNSCC cases (36% in men, 33% in women). HPV52 was the most commonly detected genotype, in cases and in controls. The prevalence of HPV16, HPV33, and HPV51 was significantly higher in cases than in controls (p = 0.0340, p = 0.0472, and 0.0144, respectively). Oral infection with high-risk HPV was associated with an increase in risk of HNSCC (OR 1.99, 95% CI 0.95-4.15). HPV16 was only associated with oropharyngeal cancer (OR 16.01, 95% CI 1.67-153.64). Conclusion This study revealed a high prevalence of oral HPV infection in this middle-aged Afro-Caribbean population, and a specific distribution of HPV genotypes. These findings may provide insight into HNSCC etiology specific to the FWI.

Résumé : The distribution of water and ions in nanoporous membranes, in particular close to their surfaces with external reservoirs, is investigated by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using classical polarizable force fields. A sodium iodide (NaI) aqueous solution is considered in uncharged weakly hydrophilic (WH) and highly hydrophilic (HH) nanoporous materials modeled by a single truncated nanopore in contact with two reservoirs. In the inner part of the nanopore, the spatial distribution of water and ions is obtained by coupling semi-infinitesimal longitudinal and semi-infinitesimal radial descriptions. In the HH material, in contrast with the WH material, species are no longer uniformly distributed in the inner nanopore and water molecules are distributed in a nearly frozen axially periodic corona-like structure which leads to the formation of ionic tunnels. In the reservoirs, water molecules and ions attracted by the membrane surface create a necking of the confined solution which acts as a barrier at the entrance of the nanopore. In the WH nanopore subsurface, close to the surface of the membrane, the species distribution is analogous to the interface distribution between an aqueous electrolyte solution and air. In the HH nanopore subsurface, this distribution is modulated by the water corona-like structure. These results provide useful information for predicting properties of nanoporous membranes, in particular the drastic reduction of diffusion coefficients in HH materials, and give a guide to designing synthetic membranes for applications in nanofiltration, etc.

Résumé : SATMAR has developed techniques and methods allowing a production of over 100 million spat per year at a size from 2 to 10 millimetres. Among the 13 species concerned by this production, 3 of major importance are the oysters Crassostrea gigas, Ostrea edulis and the Japanese little neck clam, Ruditapes philippinarum . The hatchery production could easily be doubled if the market would increase. Current research tend to increase the quality of the products by means of genetics and to lower the costs by improving the nursery phase.
La Société Atlantique de Mariculture a développé des techniques et des méthodes permettant la production annuelle de plus de l00 millions de naissains d'une taille de 2 à 10 millimètres. Parmi les 13 espèces concernées par ces productions les 3 principales sont les huîtres Crassostrea gigas, Ostrea edulis, et la palourde du Pacifique, Ruditapes philippinarum. La production de l'écloserie pourrait facilement doubler si le marchess développait. Les recherches actuelles portent sur l'amélioration de la qualité des produits par la sélection génétique et un abaissement du prix de revient par l'optimisation des performances au niveau de la phase nurserie.
