An eddy-permitting model of the Atlantic circulation: Evaluating open boundary conditions Auteur(s) : Treguier, Anne-marie Barnier, B De Miranda, A Molines, J Grima, N Imbard, M Madec, G Messager, Christophe Éditeur(s) : American Geophysical Union Résumé : As part of the French CLIPPER project, an eddy permitting model of the Atlantic circulation has been run for 22 years. The domain has open boundaries at Drake passage and at 30 degreesE, from Africa to Antarctica. The simulated mean circulation, as well as the eddy activity, is satisfactory for a 1/3 degrees model resolution, and the meridional heat transport at 30 degreesS is within the range estimated from observations. We use the "mixed" open boundary algorithm of Barnier et al. [1998], which has both a radiation condition and a relaxation to climatology. The climatological boundary forcing strongly constrains the solution in the whole domain. The model heat balance adjusts through the surface (heat flux retroaction term) more than the open boundaries. The radiation phase velocities calculated within the algorithm are analyzed. This shows, quite surprisingly, that both the eastern and western boundaries have a similar behavior, regardless of the preferred directions for advection (mainly eastward) and wave propagation (mainly westward). Our results confirm that open boundary algorithms behave differently according to the dynamics of the region considered. The passive boundary condition that Penduff et al. [2000] applied successfully in the north eastern Atlantic does not work in the present South Atlantic model. We emphasize the need for a careful prescription of the climatology at the open boundary, for which a new approach based on synoptic sections is implemented. Origine de la sédimentation dans le delta de l'Orénoque et le golfe de Paria (Venezuela) : impact du système dispersif amazonien Auteur(s) : Pujos, M Monente, J Latouche, C Maillet, N Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : The suspended matter transported by the Orinoco to the Orinoco delta originates mainly in the Colombian Andes. The four clayey minerals (kaolinite, chlorite, illite and smectite) are always present in the deltaic suspensions, the delta deposits and the gulf of Paria. Illite contents are always dominant except in those regions of the gulf of Paria situated far from the mouths of the Orinoco tributaries characterized by smectites. In the delta, illite contents which are minimal during the dry season increase noticeably during the wet season which is marked by a high Liquid and particulate matter discharge. In the delta, the clay mineralogy of the substrate is comparable to that of dry season suspensions (February), thus showing a sedimentation composed of particulate matter carried by the Orinoco and Amazon rivers. In the wet season, the high liquid and particulate discharges circulate through the delta, then enter and disperse in the Caribbean Sea and the near Atlantic. The clay mineralogy described in the gulf of Paria show that this allochthonous participation of the Amazon in the deltaic sedimentation of the Orinoco is much more pronounced there. In this region, the spatial variations in illite content show this mineral to be a good marker for circulation. A twelvemonth's residence in the West Indies, during the transition from slavery to apprenticeship; with incidental notice of the state of society, prospects, and natural resources of Jamaica and other islands. By R. R. Madden. Auteur(s) : Madden, Richard Robert, 1798-1886. Carey, Lea & Blanchard. Éditeur(s) : Carey, Lea & Blanchard. Carey, Lea & Blanchard. ( Philadelphia ) Résumé : From Wikipedia (March 23, 2013) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Robert_Madden : Richard Robert Madden (born Dublin, Ireland 22 August 1798, died Dublin, 5 February 1886) was an Irish doctor, writer, abolitionist and historian of the United Irishmen. He was born at Wormwood Gate, Dublin to Edward Madden, a silk manufacturer. He was educated at private schools. He studied medicine in Paris, Italy, and St George's Hospital, London. While in Naples he became acquainted with Lady Blessington and her circle.[1] Madden was employed in the British civil service from 1833, first as a justice of the peace in Jamaica, where he was one of six Special Magistrates sent to oversee the eventual liberation of Jamaica's slave population, according to the terms of the Slavery Abolition Act 1833. From 1835 he was Superintendent of the freed Africans in Havana. His son, Thomas More Madden, who later became a surgeon and writer, was born there. In 1839 he became the investigating officer into the slave trade on the west coast of Africa, in 1847 the secretary for the West Australian colonies. He returned to Dublin and in 1850 he was named secretary of the Office for Loan Funds in Dublin.[2] He died at his home in Booterstown, just south of Dublin city, in 1886 and is interred in Donnybrook Cemetery. Enhancing cycling performance using an eccentric chainring Auteur(s) : Hue, Olivier Galy, Olivier Hertogh, Claude Casties, Jean-François Prefaut, Christian Auteurs secondaires : Adaptations au Climat Tropical, Exercice et Santé (ACTES) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Laboratoire de Physiologie des Interactions ; CHU Arnaud de Villeneuve UPRES-EA ; Université Montpellier 1 (UM1) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD ACSM Résumé : International audience PURPOSE AND METHODS: This study was designed to compare the physiological responses and performance of well trained cyclists riding with two different chainring designs, round or eccentric, during a brief and intense cycling exercise: an "all-out" 1-km laboratory test. The eccentrically designed chainring was made of two crank arms sliding into each other, with the inside arm fixed on the center of the arm of a circular chainring and the outside arm sliding along the inside and revolving around an elliptical cam. This design increases crank arm length at the downstroke and decreases it during the upstroke, thus increasing and decreasing the torque. In terms of the chainring's revolution, the crank arm length at 0 degrees and 180 degrees is similar to the arm length of circular chainrings (175 mm). However, during the downstroke (0-180 degrees ), it increases to its maximum length of 200 mm at 90 degrees and then returns to its original length of 175 mm at 180 degrees. During the upstroke, it decreases to a minimum length of 150 mm at 270 degrees and then increases to 175 mm at 360 degrees. Eleven cyclists performed an all-out 1-km laboratory test using each chainring. The study was conducted over two consecutive weeks with the order of chainring use randomized. During all trials, ventilatory data were collected every minute using an automated breath-by-breath system. Heart rate was measured using a telemetry system. RESULTS: None of the cardiorespiratory variables showed significant differences between chainring trials. Performance, however, was significantly improved using the eccentric design (64.25 +/- 1.05 vs 69.08 +/- 1.38 s, P < 0.004, with the eccentric and the round design, respectively). CONCLUSION: We concluded that the eccentric chainring significantly improved the cycling performance during an all-out 1-km test. Further testing with indoor cycling specialists performing on a velodrome would be helpful to define the maximal possibilities of such a chainring. El CÃÂrculo Cubano in Ybor City. Auteur(s) : Robertson and Fresh Photographers, 1925-1960 ( Photographer ) Résumé : On October 10, 1899, Cuban immigrants formed a recreational society known as El Club Nacional Cubano. Three years later, the society of three hundred members changed its name to El CÃÂrculo Cubano. According to the 1902 charter, the CÃÂrculo Cubano was formed "for the mutual benefit and enjoyment of its members and for the charitable purposes and instruction of its members and the dissemination of knowledge among all classes of people." In order to preserve harmony among its diverse membership, the statutes of the club expressly prohibited any discussion within the society of labor, politics, or religion. In 1917, the Cuban Club opened the doors of its neoclassic clubhouse at 2010 Avenida República de Cuba in Ybor City. Nd isotope constraints on ocean circulation, paleoclimate, and continental drainage during the Jurassic breakup of Pangea Auteur(s) : Dera, Guillaume Prunier, Jonathan Smith, Paul L. Haggart, James W. Popov, Evgeny Guzhov, Alexander Rogov, Mikhail Delsate, Dominique Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : The breakup of Pangea and onset of growth of the Pacific plate led to several paleoenvironmental feedbacks, which radically affected paleoclimate and ocean chemistry during the Jurassic. Overall, this period was characterized by intense volcanic degassing from large igneous provinces and circum-Panthalassan arcs, new oceanic circulation patterns, and changes in heat and humidity transports affecting continental weathering. Few studies, however, have attempted to unravel the global interactions linking these processes over the long-term. In this paper, we address this question by documenting the global changes in continental drainage and surface oceanic circulation for the whole Jurassic period. For this purpose, we present 53 new neodymium isotope values (εNd(t)) measured on well-dated fossil fish teeth, ichthyosaur bones, phosphatized nodules, phosphatized ooids, and clastic sediments from Europe, western Russia, and North America. Combined with an extensive compilation of published εNd(t) data, our results show that the continental sources of Nd were very heterogeneous across the world. Volcanic inputs from a Jurassic equivalent of the modern Pacific Ring of Fire contributed to radiogenic εNd(t) values (− 4 ε-units) in the Panthalassa Ocean. For the Tethyan Ocean, the average surface seawater signal was less radiogenic in the equatorial region (− 6.3), and gradually lower toward the epicontinental peri-Tethyan (− 7.4), western Russian (− 7.4) and Euro-Boreal seas (− 8.6). Different Nd sources contributed to this disparity, with radiogenic Nd influxes from westward Panthalassan currents or juvenile volcanic arcs in open oceanic domains, and substantial unradiogenic inputs from old Laurasian and Gondwanan shields for the NW Tethyan platforms. Overall, the εNd(t) values of Euro-Boreal, peri-Tethyan, and western Russian waters varied quite similarly through time, in response to regional changes in oceanic circulation, paleoclimate, continental drainage, and volcanism. Three positive shifts in εNd(t) values occurred successively in these epicontinental seas during the Pliensbachian, in the Aalenian-Bathonian interval, and in the mid-Oxfordian. The first and third events are interpreted as regional incursions of warm surface radiogenic currents from low latitudes. The Aalenian-Bathonian shift seems linked to volcanic outbursts in the NW Tethys and/or circulation of deep currents resulting from extensional events in the Hispanic Corridor and reduced influences of boreal currents crossing the Viking Corridor. In contrast, the εNd(t) signals decreased and remained very low (< − 8) during the global warming events of the Toarcian and Late Oxfordian - Early Tithonian intervals. In these greenhouse contexts, a latitudinal expansion of humid belts could have extended the drainage pathways toward boreal Nd sources of Precambrian age and increased the supply of very unradiogenic crustal-derived inputs to seawater. Finally, a brief negative εNd(t) excursion recorded in parallel with regional drops in seawater temperature suggests that southward circulation of cold unradiogenic Arctic waters occurred in the NW Tethys in the Callovian - Early Oxfordian. All these results show that changes in surface oceanic circulation resulting from the Pangean breakup could have regionally impacted the evolution of seawater temperatures in the NW Tethys.
