Although the photographer did not name the building in this photograph, making it difficult to identify, it is a typical catholic church, possibly dating back to the 17th or 18th century. It is obvious that the church is open for visitors due to the street venders selling t-shirts on the bottom right and the woman standing in front of the iron gate is possibly there to collect tickets or charge admission.

People, mostly women, wearing hats are gathered at the wharf market near Nassau Harbor to purchase or sell produce. Sailboats, seen behind the group of people, are used to carry produce. In the distance can be seen Paradise Island, formerly known as Hog Island. In 1962, the government changed the name of Hog Island to Paradise Island. This image is featured in William Junior Bryant’s book “Flames of Life: A Pictorial Philosophy,” first published in 1961.

Three high school students from Antigua Girls High School, established in 1886, walk near the intersection of Church Street and Corn Alley dressed in their school uniforms. This uniform consists of a blue collared dress with a dark belt and worn with a white straw hat. Two younger girls from an unknown school are also walking on the street. To date, popular cultural forms and the acute homophobia of the dancehall have dominated national and international attention. The very public exchanges between Caribbean musicians and western-based gay rights campaigners have given the region a reputation for homophobia, intolerance and hate crimes. This project seeks to shift the axes of these debates by drawing on a recent body of Caribbean creative writing that addresses issues of sexual self-determination and sexual diversity in a more positive and progressive way. It will make visible the possibilities for understanding sexual differences and the modes of reconciliation to be found in a literary archive. The project will also engage a group of Caribbean scholars across other disciplines to develop a new language for articulating sexual difference. It will stage a panel debate for a Caribbean public, as well as producing academic publications and supporting graduate work.

Thompson Brothers (Wines and Spirits) Limited was a subsidiary of Burns House. In 1836, a Royal Charter established The Colonial Bank in the Caribbean.
