Brasil and Renaissance ships, docked at the Bridgetown Port ; The Bryant Slides Collection ; The Bryant Slides Collection, Barbados Auteur(s) : Unknown ( Photographer ) Résumé : The slides were taken on collecting trips sponsored by the William L. Bryant Foundation, where books, music and art indigenous to the regions were gathered. They are organized by geographical location. In the 1950s, Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagaula, Mississippi, began building luxury passenger liners. On September 4, 1958, the S.S. Brasil, at the time the largest ocean liner ever built in the Deep South, was delivered to Moore-McCormack Lines. Ingalls also constructed its sister ship the S.S. Argentina. In August 1972, the S.S. Brasil was purchased and operated by Holland America Lines and renamed Volendam III. The ocean liner passed to many owners until it was scrapped in late 2004. The M.S. Renaissance can be seen in the background. Slide labeled 2d Ship Renaissance Barbados. Innovations and technical-economic aspects of structural and non-structural applications of composite materials on large passenger vessels and merchant ships. Auteur(s) : Maccari, A Farolfi, F Éditeur(s) : Actes de colloques. Ifremer. Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1992 Résumé : Considerable interest is presently being shown in research, design and practical application of composite materials within Fincantieri Merchant Shipbuilding Division. This paper is intended to discuss the state-of-the-art and the innovations in hull, outfitting and accommodation applications, where traditional steel or light alloy can be successfully replaced by composites. The impact on design and production is outlined, with an overview of the economic effects of these materials on technology, production and safety requirements, which remain an open subject for the future possible developments. - using marine water as a heat sink, marine renewable energies, submarine cable laying,
- maritime and coastal construction and public works, maritime transport, Navy),
- Exploitation of seascapes (tourism, leisure, boating),
- Resource processing (of living resources and oil & gas)

Since 1997, the French Marine Economic Data report, published by Ifremer, includes a set of key sectoral indicators used to value the economic significance of the French marine-related activities in terms of production and jobs, their role in the national economy, their weight in international competition and the importance of non-market public services. The analysis of the marine sectors is carried out mainly at national scale but regional indicators are also presented when they are available. The European dimension of the activities is also taken into account. The big sailing which includes the ships of more than 25 metres knows a beautiful growth in spite of the crisis. It establishes a form of realization of the great wealth of billionaires' minority by which the number does not, however, stop increasing. This world is just showing, but it remains relatively secret. This ambivalence generates wide economic fallout, and it sometimes requires very important harbour arrangements. A real competition takes place between some harbour cities which want to attract this luxury clientele and the other tourists, less easy, but more numerous, who are attracted by the presence of these prestigious yachts.
