Description : Les juristes ont à leur disposition une protection juridique qui leur permet de normer réguler, valoriser, protéger et sanctionner le patrimoine naturel et culturel. En France, il existe entre autres une loi paysage, le grenelle de l'environnement, le plan local d'urbanisme, les lois sur les parcs naturels... ainsi que plus largement avec la convention Ramsar, les sites naturels de l'Unesco... Outre le patrimoine naturel, le patrimoine culturel est lui aussi protégé, il peut-être tant architectural avec les monuments et bâtiments qu'immatériel avec les traditions, les musiques, les oralités... Le seul levier juridique ne suffit pas, le levier économique et politique sont eux aussi indispensables.

Fort Fincastle, completed in 1793, with its brick walls was built by the Royal Governor of the islands, Lord Dunmore (also known as Viscount Fincastle). This uniquely shaped fort has a triangular projection and rounded side which sits atop Bennet Hill. It is located near the top of the Queen's Staircase. Later, Fort Fincastle served as a lighthouse until 1816 and then was used as a signal tower. The Water Tower and cannons can be seen in the image.

During Christopher Columbus's second voyage to the New World, he landed on the North coast of Jamaica on May 5, 1494 and called the area Santa Gloria. In 1503 during his fourth and final voyage, Columbus and his men were marooned in Jamaica. After his shipwreck, Columbus lived in Maima, a Taino (or Arawaks) Indian settlement near Seville for over a year. The Taino Indians were Jamaica’s first native people. The area is now part of the Maima-Seville Heritage Park, owned and operated by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. The image shows the remains of walls at an excavation site. The Churchill Building currently stands on the site of the former Adderley building which was purchased by the Bahamian government through the Adderley Property Purchase Loan Act of 1963. The Churchill Building was built in the early 1960s. The Adderley Building, pictured, houses the Tourism Information office and the John F. McCarthy Real Estate Insurance company. The building is located on the south side of Rawson Square which sits on the corner of Bay and East streets. Tourists are driving down Bay Street in a surrey, a horse-drawn door-less, four-wheeled carriage with two seats.

This old colonial style church is located just outside of Trinidad, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Churches like this one are located all throughout Cuba, with similar architecture and a bell tower. The church grounds are gated and there is a large Poinciana tree on the side, as well as a large Royal palm in the front. There is an unidentified bust at the entrance of the church.

Devon House was built in 1881 by Jamaica’s first black millionaire George Stiebel. The land was first assigned to Reverend John Zellers by King George II in May 1667 to aid in the Anglican Church’s efforts to spread Christianity on the island. The house’s architectural style is a mix of Jamaican and English Georgian style architecture and is located at the corner of Trafalgar Road and Hope Road, in what later became known as Millionaire’s corner. In 1967, the house was purchased by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust and was later declared a national monument in 1990 after winning the American Express Historic Preservation Award. Devon House is a Jamaica Heritage Site owned by the Jamaican government. Slide labeled Jam. in Kingston Devon House.

Bamboo Avenue, located in Lacovia, Saint Elizabeth, is also known as “Bamboo Walk.” This avenue, approximately 2.5 miles long, is planted with bamboos forming an arched canopy over the road. Throughout the years the bamboo grove has suffered damage and is becoming less dense. The avenue is protected under the Public Gardens Regulation Act and managed by the Public Gardens Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Slide labeled Jam. south bamboo.

In the distance is a green painted building and antennas, which are part of the United States Air Force missile tracking station that was located on Allen Cays, Exuma, Bahamas. During February of 1957, this group of people travelled on the boat “Isabella” to many of the smaller islands of the Abacos, including Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Allen Cay, and Grand Cay. This monument to Christopher Columbus, called La Santa Maria, is near Seville, Saint Ann. It was erected to honor, Columbus’s discovery of Jamaica on May 5, 1494 and is located at the entrance to Maima-Seville Heritage Park. Columbus also spent over a year marooned in Seville, Saint Ann after his fourth voyage to the New World in 1503. This monument is at the entrance to the Maima-Seville Heritage Park. In the distance of the image is a church. Along the road into the park are flags from various countries, including the Great Britain and the United States. People walking down Bamboo Avenue in Lacovia, Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica. Bamboo Avenue, also known as “Bamboo Walk”, is a highway approximately 2.5 miles long planted with bamboos forming an arched canopy over the road. It is also known as Holland Bamboo because it was planted by the owners of the Holland Estate, a sugar estate that dates back to the mid-1700s. The avenue was planted with the Bambusa Vulgaris a species of Bamboo which was the largest variety introduced in Jamaica. Slide labeled Bamboo over road on Southern Plains.

It is the sister castle to the El Morro Castle in Havana harbor. The inside of the castle has been entirely restored and is exactly as it was in Spanish times.
Castillo de San Pedro del Morro was designed in 1637 by Giovanni Battista Antonelli (also known as Juan Battista Antonelli), a member of a Milanese family of military engineers, on behalf of the governor of the city, Pedro de la Roca de Borja, as a defense against raiding pirates.

The British Colonial Hotel, now the British Colonial Hilton Hotel, is located on the site of Fort Nassau which was demolished in 1837. By 1900, Henry Flagler had built the original Colonial Hotel, the only beachfront hotel in Nassau, which was destroyed by fire. A Mediterranean-style replica opened in 1922. The hotel offers views of Nassau Harbor and was the location for two James Bond movies. In the picture, a man is walking from the hotel along a walking path decorated with large stone vases and benches. Slide labeled Bryant Nassau Mar .'46, British Colonial Hotel.
