Shrimp and prawn farming in the western hemisphere Auteur(s) : Aquacop, Aquacop Résumé : Dr. Michel explained that obtaining spawners in Japan and the United States is quite different from the Tahitian problem, since AQUACOP's gravid shrimp must be flown in to Papeete from New Caledonia or the Fiji Islands and then trucked several hours to the Centre Oceanologique. Reared broodstock of Penaeus monodon Auteur(s) : AQUACOP Éditeur(s) : Proceeding of symposium on Coastal Aquaculture, Cochin (India) Résumé : Since 1975, maturation and spawning in captivity of Penaeus monodon has been achieved in the 'Centre Océanologique du Pacifique', a CNEXO Centre in Tahiti. The five first animals have been imported from Fiji Islands and in May 1979, four generations-have been obtained. Under the rearing conditions followed at the Centre, reproduction is achieved all throughout the year. Maturation is induced by unilateral eyestalk ablation on pond reared animals maintained in tanks on adequate food. Results concern mating behaviour, ovarian development, number of spawnings per female and egg viability. The rearing and the maintenance conditions of the captive broodstocks are particularly important to obtain reliable results necessary to sustain commercial hatcheries. Mass production of postlarvae is routinely achieved. Maturation and spawning in captivity of penaeid shrimps Auteur(s) : Aquacop, Aquacop Éditeur(s) : Proceedings of the 6 th Annual Meeting of World Mariculture Society Résumé : As no indigenous species of commercial penaeid shrimp live in the waters of French Po1ynesia, the pre1iminary step in deve10ping shrimp aquaculture was to obtain maturation and spawning in captivity. Five species have been investigated. Wi1d-caught juveni1es from the New Ca1edonia 1agoon (f. merguiensis, f. semisulcatus, ~. ensis) and post1arvae from the Ga1veston NMFS 1aboratory (P. aztecus) and Fujinaga Institute (f. japonicus) have been used to-obtain adu1t stock. Shrimps are reared in circu1ar tanks of 12 m3 with a continuous water circulation through a coral sand bed. Rate of exchange is from 1 to 3 times a day. Throughout the year water temperature is between 25 and 29 C, sa1inity around 34.5 ppt, and pH 8.2. Solar energy is reduced by shade covers. Artificial pellets of different composition are given as food. In these conditions we have obtained: 1) about 1,000 spawnings and two generations in captivity from September 1973 to September 1974 with f. merguiensis; 2) spawnings of ~. ensis in 1973; 3) four spawnings of f. japonicus in September 1974; 4) about 20 spawnings of P. aztecus, but only aftcr removing one eyestalk; 5) maturation signs in P. semizulcatus but no spawning. Experiments on larval rearing and growth of these species are in progress. Reproduction in captivity and growth of Penaeus monodon, Fabricius in Polynesia Auteur(s) : Aquacop, Aquacop Éditeur(s) : 8 th Workshop of World Mariculture Society, Costa Rica, 10-13 janvier 1977 Résumé : To develop shrimp fanning in French Polynesia where no indigenous commercial species of penaeid prawn exists, the first step is to select the right species according to the following criteria: maturation and spawning in captivity, mass production of post-larvae, fast growth at semi-intensive density, acceptability of artificial diet, disease resistance and hardiness. This paper presents the results on P. monodon, Fabricius, the largest Indo-Pacific species. Experiments have been conducted in the "Centre Océanologique du Pacifique" in Tahiti Island where the environmental conditions are water temperature range 25-29 C, salinity 35 ppt, pH 8.2. Douze ans d'aquaculture tropicale Auteur(s) : AQUACOP Éditeur(s) : Actes de Aquaculture en milieu tropical Résumé : An important part of global aquaculture production comes from countries situated in the tropical "belt". Aquaculture in these countries must undergo significant development in the coming decade. Progress in aquaculture development has been underway for the last ten years. High temperatures lead to rapid and continuous growth allowing for year-round production and utilisation of vast coastal areas with unexploited brackish water. Countries interested by this activity are by and large developing countries and the socio-economic conditions are favourable, with an abundant workforce, high local demand and the need create export markets. Penaeid reared brood stock : closing the cycle Auteur(s) : AQUACOP Éditeur(s) : 10 th Meeting of the World Mariculture Society. Honolulu, January 1979 Résumé : Three shrimp species, Penaeus monodon, P. stylirostris (Panama and Mexican strains) and P. vannamei have matured and spawned in captivity at the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique (COP) laboratory. The shrimp, originally stocked as juveniles or postlarvae, were reared to adult size in tanks and ponds and have completed the cycle: F3 generation for P. monodon, F2 for P. stylirostris (Panama strain) and P. vannamei and F1 for P. stylirostris (Mexican strain). Maturation occurs naturally under our rearing conditions or is induced by unilateral eyestalk ablation. Details are given on mating behavior, ovarian development, number of spawnings, egg viability and maintenance of captive brood stock. Partial results so far obtained for P. monodon and P. stylirostris clearly show a reared brood stock could sustain a commercial hatchery. Recent innovations in cultivation of molluscs in french Polynesia Auteur(s) : AQUACOP Éditeur(s) : 1st International Biennal Conference on Warm Water Aquaculture - Crustacea 02/9-11/83 Brigham Young University. Hawai Résumé : Until recently, mollusc production in French Polynesia was only based upon fishing, for local consumption of edible bivalves mainly the oyster Saccostrea cucullata and for the exportation of pearl-oyster shells. As a consequence of parasitism problems on local oysters, a mollusc program was initiated by developping hatchery technics on introduced species of edible bivalves, Saccostrea echinata and Perna viridis, and cultivation methods in specialyy fitted up areas. Concerning pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera the traditional shell production activity was recently reorganized to produce black culture pearls, inducing an increased demand of young implantable pearl-oysters. Hatchery spat production proved to be unsuccessful, and technics of collection and cultivation in lagoons were set up to supply the pearl oyster farming industry, and face the depletion natural stock.
