Résumé : The allocation and cycling of carbon (C) within forests is an important component of the biospheric C cycle, but is particularly understudied within tropical forests. We synthesise reported and unpublished results from three lowland rainforest sites in Amazonia (in the regions of Manaus, Tapajos and Caxiuana), all major sites of the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Programme (LBA). We attempt a comprehensive synthesis of the C stocks, nutrient status and, particularly, the allocation and internal C dynamics of all three sites. The calculated net primary productivities (NPP) are 10.1 +/- 1.4 Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1) (Manaus), 14.4 +/- 1.3 Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1) (Tapajos) and 10.0 +/- 1.2 Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1) (Caxiuana). All errors bars report standard errors. Soil and leaf nutrient analyses indicate that Tapajos has significantly more plant-available phosphorus and calcium. Autotrophic respiration at all three sites (14.9-21.4 Mg C ha yr(-1)) is more challenging to measure, with the largest component and greatest source of uncertainty being leaf dark respiration. Comparison of measured soil respiration with that predicted from C cycling measurements provides an independent constraint. It shows general good agreement at all three sites, with perhaps some evidence for measured soil respiration being less than expected. Twenty to thirty percent of fixed C is allocated belowground. Comparison of gross primary productivity (GPP), derived from ecosystem flux measurements with that derived from component studies (NPP plus autotrophic respiration) provides an additional crosscheck. The two approaches are in good agreement, giving increased confidence in both approaches to estimating GPP. The ecosystem carbon-use efficiency (CUEs), the ratio of NPP to GPP, is similar at Manaus (0.34 +/- 0.10) and Caxiuana (0.32 +/- 0.07), but may be higher at Tapajos (0.49 +/- 0.16), although the difference is not significant. Old growth or infertile tropical forests may have low CUE compared with recently disturbed and/or fertile forests.

The Madeira Sn-Nb-Ta deposit corresponds to the albite-enriched facies of Madeira granite (Madeira Suite) that is part of a NE-SW alignment of three granitic bodies. Structural analyses suggest that the albite-enriched granite emplacement and development of related structures occurred in a different tectonic setting than earlier facies of the granitic bodies in the NE-SW alignment and that the structure was dominated by a N-NE-trending shortening related to a left-lateral motion along a NE-SW corridor within a Riedel shear. Three types of structures (flat-lying, near vertical fractures, and geodes/miaroles) concentrated the last magmatic-related fluid in the albite-enriched granite. U-Pb in situ zircon dating of the albite-enriched granite yielded an age of 1,822 ± 22 Ma. The other granitic plutons of the Madeira Suite, Água Boa granite (topaz-granite facies), and Europa per-alkaline granite formed at 1,825 ± 14 Ma, 1,831± 11 Ma, and 1,839 ± 10 Ma, respectively. The granite bodies of the Madeira Suite occur in an area occupied by a cauldron complex composed of volcanic sequences (Iricoumé Group) and associated A-type granites (Mapuera Suite), and their formation was controlled by the reactivation of the cauldron structures and the pre-existing structures. The gap between the cauldron complex and the Madeira Suite is no greater than 35 Ma. The geological evolution was reanalyzed from the perspective of an entire extensional environment where three successive episodes of A-type magmatism and basin formation (Urupi Formation) occurred. The data and interpretations of this work imply crucial constraints on the petrologic models proposed for the albite-enriched granite and, consequently, on the genesis of the Madeira deposit

The Madeira deposit (Sn, Nb, Ta) at Pitinga, Amazonia, in Brazil, is associated with the albite-enriched facies of the A-type Madeira granite (~1,820 Ma). Fluorine (cryolite), Y, REE, Li, Zr, and Th are potential by-products of the disseminated ore. We studied the xenotime from the core albite-enriched (CAG), transitional albite-enriched granite (TAG) and pegmatitic albite-enriched granite (PAG). In all these rocks, xenotime is magmatic, has high HREE contents (0.37 to 0.54 atoms per formula unit; LREE are not detected), and low U, Th and Ca content. The CAG xenotime is the richest in REE, followed by that in the PAG and TAG units. Fluorine was detected in all xenotime crystals from CAG (up to 5.10%) and from PAG (up to 1.40%) and in most crystals from TAG (up to 0.68%). Where the xenotime is richer in F, the Na and Si increase, the P, Ca, and the effectiveness of a thorite-type substitution decrease. Fluorine controls the ratio REE/Y; the richer the xenotime in F, the richer it is in REE, in particular Er and Yb. The cell parameters a and c are significantly shortened in F-rich xenotime. There is no evidence of OH in the structure. We contend that fluorine substitutes for O to form PO3F tetrahedra, as in bobdownsite. The formation of the PO3F tetrahedra in the xenotime accounts well for the compatibility between the crystallographic characteristics and the chemical composition.

Résumé : A Ar-40/Ar-39 geochronological study was performed on amphibole and biotite from some representative units of distinct tectonic domains of the southeastern Guiana Shield, north of the Amazonian Craton, the Amapa Block and the Carecuru Domain. In the AmapA Block, an Archean continental block involved in the Transamazonian orogenesis (2.26-1.95 Ga), the investigated minerals, from rocks of the Archean high-grade basement assemblage, give only Paleoproterozoic ages, indicating their complete resetting during the Transamazonian orogenic event. Amphibole ages vary from 2087 +/- 3 to 2047 +/- 20 Ma, and biotite ages spread mainly between 2079 +/- 18 and 2033 +/- 13 Ma. In the Carecuru Domain, in which the geodynamic evolution is related to Paleoproterozoic magmatic arc setting during the Transamazonian event, calc-alkaline granitoids yield amphibole age of 2074 +/- 17 Ma, and biotite ages of 1928 +/- 19 Ma and 1833 +/- 13 Ma. These data reinforce the importance of the Transamazonian orogenic cycle in the investigated area, and indicate that the rocks were not significantly affected by post-Transamazonian events. When coupled with available U-Th-Pb monazite and Pb-Pb zircon geochronological records and petro-structural observations, the new Ar-40/Ar-39 data delineate contrasting cooling and exhumation histories for the tectonic domains. In the AmapA Block, the data suggest nearly vertical T-t paths that reflect fast cooling rates, which indicate tectonically controlled exhumation, related to collisional stages of the Transamazonian event, between 2.10 and 2.08 Ga. Conversely, in the Carecuru Domain, low cooling rates suggest that the arc-related granitoids underwent slow and monotonous cooling since their emplacement until reaching the biotite isotopic closure temperature.
