Description : En résonance avec le Festival La Caravelle fait ses bulles qui se tiendra les 12, 13 et 14 octobre sur le thème des « enfants terribles », la BU du Campus de Schoelcher consacre une après-midi d'études à la perception de la bande dessinée comme marge littéraire et aux représentations de la marginalité sociale et urbaine dans les bandes dessinées. En effet, la bande dessinée est "un objet culturel non identifié" selon Thierry Groensteen. Les situations, les décors comme les personnages se développent dans un art hybride entre graphisme et littérature. La marginalité est donc double, à la fois, historiquement, dans la forme et dans les sujets mis en textes et dessins. Pour discuter de cette thématique, le festival a invité sept auteurs de bandes dessinées représentant une large palette des différentes typologies de la bande dessinée : documentaire, voyage d'exploration, science-fiction, adaptation littéraire, etc. Sept dessinateurs et scénaristes sont invités : Marguerite Abouet, auteur notamment de la série Aya de Yopougon ; Julie Blanchin Fujita, qui a fait de son séjour au Japon un récit dessiné ; Benjamin Flao, dont le dernier héros fait l'école buissonnière dans un village du littoral kenyan ; François Gabourg, dont le prochain album concerne la relation dominant/dominé vue par le prisme de l'esclavage ; Grégory Mahieux, qui met en images l'expérience de la relation avec un enfant sourd ; Hervé Tanquerelle, dont le double, dessinateur de BD, part dans une expédition folle au Groenland ; Lucas Vallerie qui narre l'ambiance de Saint-Pierre avant et après l'éruption de la Pelée, avec son personnage principal Cyparis. Pour converser avec ces auteurs de bandes dessinées, seront présent Alfred Alexandre, auteur notamment de la trilogie foyalaise ; Michael Roch, écrivain et créateur de chaînes YouTube, notamment La brigade du livre ; Marvin Fabien, artiste multimédia, musicien et doctorant en art et musicologie et Florence Ménez

People standing at the window of a retail store. This building’s walls feature 1960s inspired contemporary art paintings of flowers, text, and a stylized bird. Art paintings on the building’s walls include the following statements “I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet” and “Sock It to Me.” According to the Barbados Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office (CAIPO), "I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet" was registered in Barbados on November 25, 1968. "I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet" was a boutique store in London during the 1960s, which sold secondhand uniforms and military memorabilia. This image also features the store’s memorable sign which was inspired by the famous 1914 military recruitment poster designed by Alfred Leete. The sign and poster features Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener, then Secretary of State for War, pointing at the viewer with the words “Your Country Needs You.” However, this store's sign also features the Union Jack flag behind Lord Kitchener’s image. According CAIPO, The Bornn Bay Rum Co. was registered in Barbados on September 3, 1940. It was a subsidiary of the Bornn Distilling Co. of New York. Bay rum is a type of aftershave lotion made from bay leaves. Automobiles passes a Texaco sign along the street. Slide labeled Barbados Bldg. in Psychedelic Colors.

In Trinidad and Tobago, carnival celebrations begin after Christmas and peak during the Monday and Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday. Costumed masqueraders and festival revelers partake in the two-day street parade, generally accompanied by soca, calypso, and steel pan music, before beginning the Lenten season. The National Museum and Art Gallery hosts a permanent ongoing exhibit of masks and costumes from past carnivals. This image shows the full view of two costumes. The partial view of two more costumes can be seen as well. One of the costumes is decorated with feathered props and fans. The costume also features geometric shapes and a stylized bird’s head, with the opening for the wearer at the base of the bird’s neck. Another costume is decorated with hands accompanied by a feathered head gear featuring a stylized human face. Slide labeled Trin. 11.

This edition appears to be different then the one alluded to in the introduction by the illustrator, Louis Rhead. A portrait of Daniel Defoe is mentioned as the frontispiece, but this edition's frontispiece is a colored plate of Robinson Crusoe.
Except for the frontispiece, the colored plates are duplicates of the same illustration in black and white on the following page.

The Presidential Palace in Havana housed of all Cuban presidents from Mario García Menocal to Fulgencio Batista. It became the Museum of the Revolution during the years following the Cuban Revolution. The Spanish name is el Museo de la Revolución, and is located in the Old Havana section of Havana. On the bottom left of the photograph is a typical street which are very popular in the main cities of Cuba.
The former Presidential Palace was designed by the Cuban architect Carlos Maruri and the Belgian architect Paul Belau and was inaugurated in 1920 by President Mario García Menocal. It remained the Presidential Palace until 1959. The building has Neo-Classical elements, and was decorated by Tiffany & Co. of New York.

In 1814, Manchester became Jamaica’s newest parish and was named after the Duke of Manchester who was then serving as the Governor of the island. The capital was named Mandeville, after his son. In the background on the left is "S. F. Lyn & Son Ltd. Bargain House" and in the center is the Mandeville Market. Automobiles are parked in the distance. Mandeville Square includes a lawn decorated with palm trees with painted trunks. Walking through the square is a Manchester High School girl dressed in her school uniform, which includes a green dress and a white shirt. Slide labeled Square Mandeville.

The British Colonial Hotel, now the British Colonial Hilton Hotel, is located on the site of Fort Nassau which was demolished in 1837. By 1900, Henry Flagler had built the original Colonial Hotel, the only beachfront hotel in Nassau, which was destroyed by fire. A Mediterranean-style replica opened in 1922. The hotel offers views of Nassau Harbor and was the location for two James Bond movies. In the picture, a man is walking from the hotel along a walking path decorated with large stone vases and benches. Slide labeled Bryant Nassau Mar .'46, British Colonial Hotel.
