Although subducting slabs undergo a bending deformation that resists tectonic plate motions, the magnitude of this resistance is not known because of poor constraints on slab strength. However, because slab bending slows the relatively rapid motions of oceanic plates, observed plate motions constrain the importance of bending. We estimated the slab pull force and the bending resistance globally for 207 subduction zone transects using new measurements of the bending curvature determined from slab seismicity. Predicting plate motions Using a global mantle flow model, we constrain the viscosity of the bending slab to be at most similar to 300 times more viscous than the upper mantle: stronger slabs are intolerably slowed by the bending deformation. Weaker slabs, however, cannot transmit a pull force sufficient to explain rapid trenchward plate motions unless slabs stretch faster than seismically observed rates of similar to 10(-15) s(-1). The constrained bending viscosity (similar to 2 x 10(23) Pa s) is larger than previous estimates that yielded similar or larger bending resistance (here similar to 25% of forces). This apparent discrepancy occurs because slabs bend more gently than previously thought, with an average radius of curvature of 390 km that permits subduction Of Strong slabs. This gentle bending may ultimately permit plate tectonics on Earth.

In the Wadi Haymiliyah of the Oman ophiolite (Haylayn block), discordant wehrlite bodies ranging in size from tens to hundreds of meters intrude the lower crust at different levels. We combined investigations on natural wehrlites from the Wadi Haymiliyah section with an experimental study on the phase relations in a wehrlitic system in order to constrain the petrogenesis of the crustal wehrlites of the Oman ophiolite. Secondary ion mass spectrometry analyses of clinopyroxenes from different wehrlite bodies imply that the clinopyroxenes were crystallized from tholeiitic, mid-ocean ridge (MORB)-type melts. The presence of primary magmatic amphiboles in some wehrlites suggests a formation under hydrous conditions. Significantly enhanced Sr-87/Sr-86 isotope ratios of separates from these amphiboles imply that the source of the corresponding magmatic fluids was either seawater or subduction zone-related. The experiments revealed that under wet conditions at relatively low temperatures, a MORB magma has the potential to produce wehrlite in the ocean crust by accumulation of early olivine and clinopyroxene. These show typically high Mg# which is a consequence of the oxidizing effect of the prevailing high aH(2)O. First plagioclases crystallizing after clinopyroxene under wet conditions are high in An content, in contrast to the corresponding dry system. Trace element compositions of clinopyroxenes of those wehrlites from the Moho transition zone are too depleted in HREE to be in equilibrium with present-day MORB, implying a genetic relation to the V2 lavas of the Oman ophiolite, which are interpreted to be the result of fluid-enhanced melting of previously depleted mantle. We present a model on the petrogenesis of the crustal wehrlites in an upper mantle wedge above an initial, shallow subduction zone at the beginning of the intraoceanic thrusting.

Giant earthquake (moment magnitude M-w >= 8.5) forecasts for subduction zones have been empirically related to both tectonic stresses and geometrical irregularities along the subduction interface. Both of these controls have been suggested as able to tune the ability of rupture to propagate laterally and, in turn, exert an important control on giant earthquake generation. Here we test these hypotheses, and their combined influence, by compiling a dataset of trench fill thickness (a proxy for smoothing of subducting plate relief by sediment input into the subduction channel) and upper plate strain (a proxy for the tectonic stresses applied to the subduction interface) for 44 segments of the global subduction network. We statistically compare relationships between upper plate strain, trench sediment thickness and maximal earthquake magnitude. We find that the combination of both large trench fill (>= 1 km) and neutral upper plate strain explains spatial patterns of giant earthquake occurrence to a statistically significant degree. In fact, the concert of these two factors is more highly correlated with giant earthquake occurrence than either factor on its own. Less frequent giant earthquakes of lower magnitude are also possible at subduction zones with thinner trench fill and compressive upper plate strain. Extensional upper plate strain and trench fill < 0.5 km appear to be unfavorable conditions, as giant earthquakes have not been observed in these geodynamical environments during the last 111 years. Serpentinization of olivine-rich troctolite from core 227, Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Hole U1309D ranges from 10 to 90. Two episodes of serpentinization are recognized. The first, dominant in weakly serpentinized samples, is an approximately isochemical (except for water) replacement of olivine (Fo(8485)) by a mixture of serpentine (antigorite, Mg-number 92) and brucite (amakinite-rich; Mg-number 65). The compositions of the minerals in type 1 veins are a reflection of FeMg exchange between olivine and the brucite serpentine formed during early serpentinization. The early serpentinite veins (type 1) are thin ( 005 mm), irregular, and exploit pre-existing cracks in olivine. The presence of antigorite suggests that early serpentinization occurred at T 300C. Type 1 veins reflect rock-dominated serpentinization, became isolated early in their history, and persist as relicts in all but the most altered samples. The main episode of serpentinization is manifested by through-going lizardite (average Mg-number 96)magnetite veins (type 2). Type 2 veins define an anastomosing foliation, may be several millimeters in width and appear to exploit pre-existing, favorably oriented type 1 veins. Type 2 veins reflect open-system serpentinization. Magnetite in these veins formed by oxidation of the Fe in brucite and serpentine, whereas addition of silica to the system converted the Mg-component of the brucite to serpentine. Magnetite forms one or more distinct bands in the interior of the vein and is never in direct contact with relict olivine. A bruciteserpentine mixture, similar to that found in type 1 veins, but with lizardite instead of antigorite, is commonly present at the margins of type 2 veins (i.e. where they are in reaction contact with relict olivine). We interpret type 2 veins as a steady-state system where brucite continually forms at the olivinevein contact and then reacts out in the interior of the vein. This continual formation and destruction of brucite imposes an exceptionally low a(SiO2) on the system. Magnetite and olivine are never in contact in type 2 veins (or anywhere else) because the olivine-out reaction yields ferroan brucite and not magnetite. The desilication of serpentine in the type 2 veins is a reflection of the inherent instability of Fe-rich serpentine with respect to magnetite at low silica activity. Thus, the composition of serpentine in equilibrium with magnetite in serpentinites is a function of serpentinemagnetite and not serpentineolivine equilbria.
