Boats and ocean liners anchored in Saint George’s harbor, Grenada. A yacht with what appears to be the name Sans Souci is flying a United States of America and the Grenadan flag (1967-1974). In 1967 when Grenada became a British Associated State, it adopted a blue-yellow-green flag with a nutmeg in the center. The nutmeg represented Grenada’s position as the “Spice Isle” and is also featured on the Coat of Arms. This flag was used until 1974 when Grenada gained independence. Merchant Vessel (MV) Geestcape, partially pictured, entered service in 1966. In 1935, the Van Geest brothers in Spalding, United Kingdom started a horticultural business. The brothers later expanded their business to include a cargo service to carry horticultural produce, primarily bananas, from the Windward and Leeward Islands to Europe. MV Geestcape is also flying the flag of the British Merchant Navy, a red flag with the Union Jack in the upper left corner. Motor Ship (MS) Renaissance, behind MV Geestcape, was built in 1966. Until 1977, Renaissance operated primarily on the Marseille-Haifa route under Compagnie Navigation de Paquet (Croiseres Paquet), Marseille, France. The cruise liner had many subsequent owners throughout her history, until her disposal in 2010. She is pictured here flying the French flag. In the distance overlooking the harbor is Fort George, Grenada’s oldest fort which was built by the French in 1705. Fort George continues (2013) to function as the headquarters for the Royal Grenada Police Force, which it has housed since 1854 when the Colonial Government took over control of the fort. Walter W. S. Cook standing in Nicholls Town, a town in northeastern Andros, Bahamas. Cook was the founding director of the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, served as an art professor from 1932 to 1953, and was historian of Medieval Spanish art. He was a companion of William Junior Bryant during Bryant’s trips to Andros and New Providence in 1946. In the distance of the image is a British flag, plantain or banana trees, and people walking down a narrow dirt path. Slide labeled Nicolls Town Andros Mar. '46.

Sail boat in Nassau Harbor flying the British merchant ship flag, the United States of America flag, and the Russian merchant ship flag. The red flag with the Union Jack in the upper left corner is the official, historic seventeenth century Red Ensign flag of the British Merchant Navy. The white-blue-red flag was first adopted in 1699 by Tsar Peter I the Great as an ensign for Russian merchant ships and was later chosen as the official Russian flag in 1991, prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In the distance is the Hog Island Light (now Paradise Island). Hog Island Light, built 1817, is the oldest lighthouse in The Bahamas and is also the oldest surviving lighthouse in the West Indies. In 1962, the government changed the name of Hog Island to Paradise Island. Slide labeled Harbor entrance light Nassau.

In the distance overlooking the harbor is Fort George, Grenada’s oldest fort which was built by the French in 1705. Fort George continues (2013) to function as the headquarters for the Royal Grenada Police Force, which it has housed since 1854 when the Colonial Government took over control of the fort. Pictured is the dome of the President Palace with a Cuban flag. The former Presidential Palace, built between 1913 & 1920, now houses el Museo de la Revolución. The palace was the place of the failed assassination attempt on US-friendly dictator Batista in March 1957, by revolutionary student leader Jose Echeverria. The museum follows Cuba's history from pre-Columbian culture to present day socialism.
The former Presidential Palace (presently Museo de la Revolución) was designed by the Cuban architect Carlos Maruri and the Belgian architect Paul Belau and was inaugurated in 1920 by President Mario García Menocal. It remained the Presidential Palace until 1959. The building has Neo-Classical elements.

This monument to Christopher Columbus, called La Santa Maria, is near Seville, Saint Ann. It was erected to honor, Columbus’s discovery of Jamaica on May 5, 1494 and is located at the entrance to Maima-Seville Heritage Park. Columbus also spent over a year marooned in Seville, Saint Ann after his fourth voyage to the New World in 1503. This monument is at the entrance to the Maima-Seville Heritage Park. In the distance of the image is a church. Along the road into the park are flags from various countries, including the Great Britain and the United States. Cat Cay refers to two islands in the Bahamas, North Cat Cay and South Cat Cay which is uninhabited. North Cat Cay was purchased in 1931 by Louis Wasey as a private island and is presently (2013) owned by members of the Cat Cay Yacht Club. This image shows yachts and sail boats docked at the North Cat Cay marina. One of the yachts is flying a United States of America flag while another is called “Elsa B.” Two men, one dressed in a khaki uniform, stand on the dock. Devon House was built in 1881 by Jamaica’s first black millionaire George Stiebel. The land was first assigned to Reverend John Zellers by King George II in May 1667 to aid in the Anglican Church’s efforts to spread Christianity on the island. The house’s architectural style is a mix of Jamaican and English Georgian style architecture and is located at the corner of Trafalgar Road and Hope Road, in what later became known as Millionaire’s corner. In 1967, the house was purchased by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust and was later declared a national monument in 1990 after winning the American Express Historic Preservation Award. Devon House is a Jamaica Heritage Site owned by the Jamaican government. Slide labeled Jam. in Kingston Devon House.

In 1924, Maybelle ‘Ma’ Ewen opened the twelve room Doctor’s Cave Hotel, which later became known as the Casa Blanca Beach Hotel. This was the first hotel in Montego Bay, Saint James, Jamaica. (Biographical) In early April 1980, the Cuban government announced that anyone wishing to leave the country should go to the Peruvian Embassy. Within two days about 10,000 Cubans entered the grounds. On April 20, Castro announced that all who wished to leave could board boats at the port of Mariel. Thus began the Mariel Boatlift.

People standing at the window of a retail store. This building’s walls feature 1960s inspired contemporary art paintings of flowers, text, and a stylized bird. Art paintings on the building’s walls include the following statements “I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet” and “Sock It to Me.” According to the Barbados Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office (CAIPO), "I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet" was registered in Barbados on November 25, 1968. "I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet" was a boutique store in London during the 1960s, which sold secondhand uniforms and military memorabilia. This image also features the store’s memorable sign which was inspired by the famous 1914 military recruitment poster designed by Alfred Leete. The sign and poster features Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener, then Secretary of State for War, pointing at the viewer with the words “Your Country Needs You.” However, this store's sign also features the Union Jack flag behind Lord Kitchener’s image. According CAIPO, The Bornn Bay Rum Co. was registered in Barbados on September 3, 1940. It was a subsidiary of the Bornn Distilling Co. of New York. Bay rum is a type of aftershave lotion made from bay leaves. Automobiles passes a Texaco sign along the street. Slide labeled Barbados Bldg. in Psychedelic Colors.

This monument to Christopher Columbus stands before the front entrance to the Government House in Nassau, New Providence Island, Bahamas. The Government House, an example of Caribbean Georgian architecture features a four columned portico. In 1492, Columbus became the first European to visit the Bahamas when he landed on San Salvador. The statue, built in London, was imported by Sir James Carmichael Smyth in 1830. The current Government House, with its four columned porticos, was completed by 1806. It is the home of the governor-general, the queen’s representative in The Bahamas. Sections of the building were renovated after the hurricane of 1929. The Duke of Windsor was assigned Governor of the Bahamas in 1940 and lived in the house during that time.
