Walter W. S. Cook standing in Nicholls Town, a town in northeastern Andros, Bahamas. Cook was the founding director of the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, served as an art professor from 1932 to 1953, and was historian of Medieval Spanish art. He was a companion of William Junior Bryant during Bryant’s trips to Andros and New Providence in 1946. In 1924, Maybelle ‘Ma’ Ewen opened the twelve room Doctor’s Cave Hotel, which later became known as the Casa Blanca Beach Hotel. This was the first hotel in Montego Bay, Saint James, Jamaica. This monument to Christopher Columbus stands before the front entrance to the Government House in Nassau, New Providence Island, Bahamas. The Government House, an example of Caribbean Georgian architecture features a four columned portico. In 1492, Columbus became the first European to visit the Bahamas when he landed on San Salvador. The statue, built in London, was imported by Sir James Carmichael Smyth in 1830. The current Government House, with its four columned porticos, was completed by 1806. It is the home of the governor-general, the queen’s representative in The Bahamas. Sections of the building were renovated after the hurricane of 1929. The Duke of Windsor was assigned Governor of the Bahamas in 1940 and lived in the house during that time.

This monument to Christopher Columbus, called La Santa Maria, is near Seville, Saint Ann. It was erected to honor, Columbus’s discovery of Jamaica on May 5, 1494 and is located at the entrance to Maima-Seville Heritage Park. Columbus also spent over a year marooned in Seville, Saint Ann after his fourth voyage to the New World in 1503. This monument is at the entrance to the Maima-Seville Heritage Park. In the distance of the image is a church. Along the road into the park are flags from various countries, including the Great Britain and the United States. Fort Montagu, completed by July 1742, was built from local limestone by Captain Peter Henry Bruche. It is the oldest of the island’s three forts, Fort Fincastle and Fort Charlotte. This fort guarded the eastern harbor of Nassau and only saw action during the invasion of rebel American troops during the Revolutionary War in 1776. A man and boy are on the outside of the fort. At the top of the fort are cannons and a British flag.

Jonkonnu is an Afro-Bahamian carnival-like festival held every Boxing Day, New Year's Day and summer time. Jonkonnu performers and musicians parade down a street pass crowds. Some are holding signs, one reads "Greeting Chipman Sop."
