Fort Fincastle, completed in 1793, with its brick walls was built by the Royal Governor of the islands, Lord Dunmore (also known as Viscount Fincastle). This uniquely shaped fort has a triangular projection and rounded side which sits atop Bennet Hill. It is located near the top of the Queen's Staircase. Later, Fort Fincastle served as a lighthouse until 1816 and then was used as a signal tower. The Water Tower and cannons can be seen in the image.

This monument to Christopher Columbus stands before the front entrance to the Government House in Nassau, New Providence Island, Bahamas. The Government House, an example of Caribbean Georgian architecture features a four columned portico. In 1492, Columbus became the first European to visit the Bahamas when he landed on San Salvador. The statue, built in London, was imported by Sir James Carmichael Smyth in 1830. The current Government House, with its four columned porticos, was completed by 1806. It is the home of the governor-general, the queen’s representative in The Bahamas. Sections of the building were renovated after the hurricane of 1929. The Duke of Windsor was assigned Governor of the Bahamas in 1940 and lived in the house during that time.

People, mostly women, wearing hats are gathered at the wharf market near Nassau Harbor to purchase or sell produce. Sailboats, seen behind the group of people, are used to carry produce. In the distance can be seen Paradise Island, formerly known as Hog Island. In 1962, the government changed the name of Hog Island to Paradise Island. This image is featured in William Junior Bryant’s book “Flames of Life: A Pictorial Philosophy,” first published in 1961.

Near the terminal are two Bahamas Airways airplanes parked next to a yellow automobile. Bahamas Airways closed operations in 1970. In 1973 Bahamasair, a result of the merger of Out Island Airways and Flamingo Airways, was established as the national carrier of the Independent Commonwealth of The Bahamas. In the foreground are men in sailboats. In the background is the S.S. Yarmouth Castle. In 1927, the S.S. Evangeline, and her sister ship the S.S. Yarmouth, were built by Eastern Steamship Lines in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By 1964, the S.S. Evangeline was sold to the Chadade Steamship Company, Inc., a Panamanian company, where her name was changed from Evangeline to Yarmouth Castle. On November 13, 1965, the Yarmouth Castle, sailing from Miami, Florida to Nassau, Bahamas, sank due to fire. The CYL on the funnel stands for Yarmouth Cruise Lines. The Churchill Building currently stands on the site of the former Adderley building which was purchased by the Bahamian government through the Adderley Property Purchase Loan Act of 1963. The Churchill Building was built in the early 1960s. The Adderley Building, pictured, houses the Tourism Information office and the John F. McCarthy Real Estate Insurance company. The building is located on the south side of Rawson Square which sits on the corner of Bay and East streets. Tourists are driving down Bay Street in a surrey, a horse-drawn door-less, four-wheeled carriage with two seats.

Pictured is the back of the Queen Victoria statue by sculpture John Adams-Acton, flanked by two cannons. The statue, located in Nassau's Parliament Square, was erected in celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday on May 24, 1905. To the right of the statue can be seen the former Colonial Secretary's Office, built in 1805 by James Tait, which today houses the government administrative offices. Parliament Square's pink government buildings, examples of Classical style architecture, were constructed in the early 1800s by Loyalists who came to the Bahamas from North Carolina. In the background is the former Adderley building, where the Churchill building now stands.

The Nassau Public Library and Museum building, completed between 1798 and 1800, was originally built as prison by Loyalist Joseph Eve and was inspired by the Powder Magazine in Williamsburg, Virginia. The library, established in 1847, was moved to the converted prison building in 1873. Today, the structure is the only octagonal historic building in the Bahamas. The British Colonial Hotel, now the British Colonial Hilton Hotel, is located on the site of Fort Nassau which was demolished in 1837. By 1900, Henry Flagler had built the original Colonial Hotel, the only beachfront hotel in Nassau, which was destroyed by fire. A Mediterranean-style replica opened in 1922. The hotel offers views of Nassau Harbor and was the location for two James Bond movies. In the picture, a man is walking from the hotel along a walking path decorated with large stone vases and benches. Slide labeled Bryant Nassau Mar .'46, British Colonial Hotel.

Jonkonnu is an Afro-Bahamian carnival-like festival held every Boxing Day, New Year's Day and summer time. Groups dance down streets and dress in paper-fringed costumes. The musicians often use traditional instruments such as goat skin drums and cowbells.
