Distant side view of the Steamboat Robert Fulton at Snake Cay, Abaco, Bahamas ; The Bryant Slides Collection ; The Bryant Slides Collection, Bahamas Auteur(s) : Unknown ( Photographer ) Résumé : The slides were taken on collecting trips sponsored by the William L. Bryant Foundation, where books, music and art indigenous to the regions were gathered. The are organized by geographical location. Robert Fulton (1765-1815) was an American inventor credited with adapting the steam engine for commercial use in boats. He worked with Robert Livingston to provide steamboat service along the Hudson River. The steamboat pictured went into service in 1909, the year of the Hudson-Fulton Celebration which celebrated Henry Hudson’s exploration of the Hudson River and Robert Fulton’s paddle steamer. Steamboat Robert Fulton belonged to the Hudson River Day Line and made its final voyage on September 13, 1948 traveling along the Hudson River from Albany to New York City. In 1959, the steamboat was brought on land to Snake Cay, Abaco, Bahamas where it later housed the offices and apartments for Owens-Illinois Incorporated, a lumber company. The image shows cars parked next to the steamboat and in the distance are stacks of lumber behind what appears to be metal scaffolding. Slide labeled Robert Fulton Snake Cay Abaco April '65. French voyages of exploration and science in the Age of Enlightenment: an ocean of discovery throughout the Pacific Ocean Auteur(s) : Melguen, Marthe Éditeur(s) : J.W. Markham & A.L. Duda, pp. 31-59. Fort Pierce, FL : IAMSLIC Résumé : A time when France, as well as Great Britain, had a very ambitious maritime policy, the La Pérouse expedition was the only maritime expedition conceived, designed and followed at a national level by the King himself, Louis XVI. The excellence of the Expedition's preparation and of its importance in terms of scientific results, the exceptional concern of La Pérouse in the fields of data gathering and transmission, his very high quality as captain of a global expedition, made it a remarkable achievement, despite its disastrous end. Can holidays last or even go on forever? Utopia is one of the ways to think this option, to operate this step aside, against the current of the surrounding and dominant order. From Segalen to Cendrars, the test of travel and exoticism without voyeurism carries in it the proofs of the trip or the act of slinging. Autonomy and nomadism are the appropriate terms that open and sometimes force the doors of consensus, immobilism and generalized fear. These two terms - at the origin of which I named “autonomadie” (in French, quite untranslatable) - refer to independence of mind, freedom of expression and the free flow of ideas, people, long before that of goods. If the planet is the foundation of all travel, culture is its driving force. This article tries to mark new paths of travel, off the beaten track, nourished by the imagination of elsewhere, and necessarily alternative. Yesterday as today, it is always a matter of rising to better stand up, and therefore not to fall and die. Especially in this good way of a beautiful promising life that leads to oneself as to the others. Humanity is nothing without freedom of movement. It is nothing without movement and freedom. Humans are not automated subjects but autonomous nomads. And active travelers rather than passive tourists. This is what this contribution intends not to affirm but to explore. The African American writer John Edgar Wideman published in 2003 a travel memoir commissioned by the National Geographic Society. As an heir to a painful transatlantic History of colonialism, the writer chooses Martinique as his destination. Unfamiliar with this French-speaking Caribbean Island, Wideman transcribes his intimate experience of Martinique and guides his readers through a touristic and literary journey that becomes a reflection on the self in relation to others. Our analysis of Wideman’s travel writing aims to explore the author’s perception of the island as a touristic, historical, and cultural site. Professional experience abroad can be an occasion for being truly immersed in the country, in the life of one’s colleague, sometimes friends, in avoiding the traditional tourist framework. It seems to allow having a peculiar place without the feeling of being a total foreigner neither a local. Allowing a closer relationship with the locals (at least giving that impression). Taking part in the daily life and feeling deeply useful. It offers the possibility to reduce the distance with the “other” as “another” thanks to the time spent on site but also with an improved relationship with the inhabitants. We suggest exploring this experience in its learning aspect, specifically amongst young people. It is an occasion to get out of the usual tourist framework and get fully immersed in autonomy and uncertainty. Upon leaving and trying out this experience one will face challenges which will change him or her forever.Taking the three different analysis from J. Campbell on the three initiating steps (before, during and after the stay) the interpretation requires the return stage as well as the feedback on the experience, providing a collection of interviews. Activities of Cruise-Ship Employees in Cozumel, Mexico Auteur(s) : Marie Van Broeck, Anne Dierckx, Guy Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : Despite the increasing importance of cruise tourism worldwide, very little is known about the lives of cruise-ship employees, and how they use their free time at the ports of call. This paper presents the results of a small-scale exploratory research on the activities of cruise crew and staff members on the island of Cozumel, Mexico, an important port of call for Caribbean routes. Conducted in 2009, qualitative research for this paper included participant observation and several informal conversations and semi-structured interviews with twenty cruise-ship employees and six owners and employees of local businesses. Our conclusions confirm other authors' findings and provide fresh information on the factors that determine these individuals' choices of activities, places and company. Availability of time and money depends on each worker's place in the labor hierarchy, but choices are also influenced by cultural background. More in-depth research will be needed at the demand as well as the offer sides to complement these preliminary findings.
