Description : The importance of longevity as an economically trait gives a picture of the flock efficiency and adaptation in a particular environment. A study was conducted in the experimental herd of Creole goats at INRA in Guadeloupe in order to test environmental (year and season at first kidding, age at first kidding and weight at first mating as well as genetic (index of resistance, sire) factors that affect longevity of does. Lifetime data set of 387 Creole does, reared at pasture all year long, was recorded over a period of 11 years (2001-2012). Does were bred for reproduction at 11months of age. Three mating periods were organized per year, corresponding to 3 climatic seasons, using buck effect. Data were analyzed using survival models (Survival Kit 6.1). The average age for culling was 5.03 years. The culling rate was higher for goats between 2 and 3 years (17 and 24%) and then gradually decreased. Year and season at first kidding did not have a long term influence on does? longevity; neither does age at first kidding. In contrast, weight at first mating had a significant effect and it can be recommended to farmers to mate primiparous goats heavier than 17 kg. Heritability was estimated to 0.16 allowing some genetic progress. No significant correlation was shown with the genetic breeding value of resistance to gastrointestinal parasitism. This study gave indications to breeders to improve their female flock management and increase does? longevity. L'importance de la longévité comme trait économique donne une image de l'efficacité et de l'adaptation de troupeau dans un environnement particulier. Une étude a été entreprise dans le troupeau expérimental de chèvres créoles à l'AICN en Guadeloupe afin d'examiner ambiant (l'année et la saison d'abord badiner, âge d'abord badiner et poids d'abord joindre aussi bien que (index de résistance, de père) les facteurs génétiques affectez dont la longévité fait. L'ensemble de données de vie du Créole 387 fait, élevé au pâturage tout au long de l'année, a été enregistré pendant 11 ans (2001-2012). Fait ont été multipliés pour la reproduction à 11months d'âge. Trois périodes d?accouplement ont été organisées par an, correspondant à 3 saisons climatiques, utilisant l'effet de mâle. Des données ont été analysées utilisant des modèles de survie (trousse de survie 6,1). L'âge moyen pour cueillir était de 5,03 ans. Le taux de cueillage était plus haut pour des chèvres entre 2 et 3 ans (17 et 24%) et alors graduellement diminué. L'année et la saison à premier badiner n'ont pas eu une influence à long terme sur la longévité des does ; ni l'un ni l'autre ne vieillit d'abord badiner. En revanche, le poids au premier accouplement a eu un effet significatif et il peut recommander aux agriculteurs de joindre les chèvres primipares des que 17 kilogrammes plus lourds. L'héritabilité a été estimée à 0,16 permettant du progrès génétique. Aucune corrélation significative n'a été montrée avec la valeur d'élevage génétique de la résistance au parasitisme gastro-intestinal. Cette étude a donné des indications aux éleveurs afin d'améliorer la gestion féminine de troupeau et d'augmenter la longévité de ces dernières.

Description : Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) has been a major factor inhibiting the expansion of papaya production in South Florida, USA. The University of Florida has developed a transgenic papaya line X17-2, which is tolerant to PRSV and is suitable for commercial production. The expected yield improvement can be as high as 380%. In spite of the yield potential, some fruit growers may be skeptical about adopting this improved GM cultivars for a variety of reasons. Consequently, a probit model with data from a survey of likely producers was used to identify those factors that may influence the adoption of the new technology. The results indicate that education level, farm size, and income derived from agriculture were among the factors likely to increase adoption of the technology. The findings suggest that a targeted education program will go a far way in increasing rate of adoption of the technology. Le virus de tache annulaire de papaye (PRSV) a été un facteur important empêchant l'expansion de la production de papaye en Floride du sud, Etats-Unis. L'université de la Floride a développé une ligne transgénique X17-2 de papaye, qui est tolérante à PRSV et convient à la production commerciale. L'amélioration prévue de rendement peut être aussi haute que 380%. Malgré le potentiel de rendement, quelques arboriculteurs peuvent être sceptiques au sujet d'adopter ceci les cultivars améliorés de GM pour des raisons diverses. En conséquence, un modèle de probit avec des données d'une enquête des producteurs probables a été employé pour identifier ces facteurs qui peuvent influencer l'adoption de la nouvelle technologie. Les résultats indiquent que le niveau d'éducation, la taille de ferme, et le revenu dérivé de l'agriculture étaient parmi les facteurs vraisemblablement pour augmenter l'adoption de la technologie. Les résultats suggèrent qu'un programme éducatif visé aille une manière lointaine dans le taux croissant d'adoption de la technologie.

STUDY QUESTION: Do freezing and in vitro culture procedures enhance the expression of proteins involved in apoptotic or autophagic pathways in murine pre-pubertal testicular tissue? SUMMARY ANSWER: IVM strongly modified apoptosis- and autophagy-related relative protein levels in mice testicular tissue whereas the impact of cryopreservation procedures was minimal at the end of the culture. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: In vitro spermatogenesis remains a challenging technical issue as it imposes to find a very close balance between survival and death of germ cell natural precursors (i.e. gonocytes and spermatogonia), which will eventually undergo a complete spermatogenesis close to in vivo conditions. The establishment of efficient culture conditions coupled with suitable cryopreservation procedures (e.g. controlled slow freezing [CSF] and solid surface vitrification [SSV]) of pre-pubertal testicular tissue is a crucial step in the fields of fertility preservation and restoration to improve the spermatic yield obtained in vitro. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Here, we study cryopreservation procedures (i.e. CSF or SSV) and the impact of culture media compositions. A first set of 66 mouse pre-pubertal testes were directly cultured during 30, 36, 38 and 60 days (D) from 2.5 to 6.5-day-old CD-1 mice to evaluate the impact of time-aspect of culture and to endorse the reverse phase protein microarrays (RPPM) technique as an adapted experimental tool for the field of in vitro spermatogenesis. Ninety others fresh, slow-frozen and vitrified pre-pubertal testes were cultured during 30 days for the principal study to evaluate the impact of cryopreservation procedures before and after culture. Thirty-four testes dissected from 2.5, 6.5, 36.5, 40.5, 42.5 and 62.5 days postpartum (dpp) mice, corresponding to the time frames of spermatogenesis orchestrated in vitro, were used as in vivo controls. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: After in vitro culture, testicular tissue samples originated from 2.5 or 6.5-day-old CD-1 male mice were analyzed using RPPM. This targeted proteomic technique allowed us to assess the expression level of 29 apoptosis- and autophagy-related factors by normalizing blank-corrected signal values. In addition, morphological analyses (e.g. HES, PAS, TRA98 and CREM) and DNA fragmentation in intra-tubular cells (i.e. terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling; TUNEL) were assessed for the distinct experimental conditions tested as well as for in vivo control mouse testes. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: A validation of the RPPM procedure in the field of in vitro spermatogenesis was completed with assay and array robustness before a principal study concerning the evaluation of the impact of in vitro culture and cryopreservation procedures. The proportion of elongated spermatids and the total cell number per seminiferous tubule tended to be very different between the in vivo and in vitro conditions (P < 0.05), suggesting the presence of a beneficial regulation on the first spermatogenesis wave by intrinsic apoptosis (Caspase₉) and autophagy (Atg5) factors (P < 0.0003 and r2 = 0.74). Concerning the impact of culture media compositions, a basic medium (BM) composed of αMEM plus 10% KnockOut™ serum replacement and gentamicin supplemented with retinol (Rol) and vitamin E (Vit. E) was selected as the best culture medium for fresh 6.5 dpp tissue cultured during 30D with 27.7 ± 8.10% of seminiferous tubules containing elongated spermatids. Concerning the impact of cryopreservation procedures, SSV did not have any impact on the morphological parameters evaluated after culture in comparison to fresh tissue (FT) controls. The proportion of tubules with elongated spermatids on testicular explants cultured with BMRol+Vit. E was not different between SSV (6.6 ± 1.6%) and CSF (5.3 ± 1.9%); however, round spermatids were observed more frequently for SSV (19 ± 6.2%) than CSF (3.3 ± 1.9%, P = 0.0317). Even if the proportion of TUNEL-positive cells for BMRol+Vit. E was higher at D30 after SSV (4.12 ± 0.26%) than CSF (1.86 ± 0.12%, P = 0.0022) and FT (2.69 ± 0.33%, P = 0.0108), the DNA damages observed at the end of the culture (i.e. D30) were similar to respective 6.5 dpp controls. In addition, the relative protein level expression ratio of an apoptotic factor, the phosphorylated FADD on Fas, was reduced by 64-fold in vitrified testes cultured with BMRol+Vit. E. Furthermore, we found in this study that the StemPro®-34 SFM culture medium supplemented with growth factors (e.g. EGF, bFGF, GDNF and LIF) prevented the differentiation of spermatogonial stem cells in favor of a significant proliferation with a better architectural pattern than in vivo 6.5 dpp controls with an increase of seminiferous tubules area for FT (P = 0.0357) and CSF (P = 0.0317). LIMITATIONS REASONS FOR CAUTION: Despite our promising results, the evaluation of apoptotic- and autophagic-related proteins was studied for a limited amount of proteins and on global testicular tissue. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: The data presented herein will help to improve apoptotic and autophagic understanding during the first spermatogenic wave. Moreover, our findings illustrate for the first time that, using finely-tuned experimental conditions, a testicular in vitro culture combined with proteomic technologies may significantly facilitate the study of cryopreservation procedures and in vitro culture evaluations. This study may also contribute to improve work on testicular tissues from pre-pubertal and adolescent cancer survivors. Description : Tomato is one of the most popular vegetables in the world. Therefore, for improvement in crop productivity in Suriname and most other countries, excessive application of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers is used. These result in gradual depletion of soil fertility and microbial diversity. Conventionally managed soils are found to exhibit a poorer micro flora and a lower biological activity then organically managed soils. Recently much attention is paid to organic cultivation and the use of bio fertilizers as a supplement for chemical fertilizers. VAM fungi have the potential to improve the sustainability of tomato production by improving yield and quality. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of two different concentrations of commercially available vesicular - arbuscular mycorrhiza on the plant growth and fruit production of two tomato varieties (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) in the greenhouse.The experiment was set up as a randomized factorial block design with two independent factors and consisted of six treatments and three replications. The factors were two tomato varieties: hybrid 61 and hybrid 501 and two concentrations of VAM namely 2.5 and 10 g. VAM/plant. Biomass was determined two times, at bloom initiation and at the end of the experiment. The growth parameters were measured once per week. The production was recorded only for the first two harvest times. Data was statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA. The results of this experiment showed that the VAM fungi had a positive influence (p < 0.05) on the production for both varieties of tomatoes. And it also resulted in earlier reproduction. There was no significant difference in production (p > 0.05) between the two concentrations of VAM inoculum used.

Résumé : The present development of Peneid shrimp culture is limited by the problem set by the routine obtainment of reproduction in captivity. In Polynesia where no species of commercial interest is found naturally, this obtainment is a necessary prerequisite. The observations at the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique of CNEXO were made on 6 species of the genus Penaeus (P. merguiensis, P. aztecus, P. japonicus, P. monodon, P. vannamei and P. stylirostris) raised and maintained in 12 m² outdoortanks. At temperatures, between 25 and 32°, a salinity of 35 and a pH of 8,2, maturations and spawnings are seen throughout the year and several generations were obtained : P. merguiensis, F7 ; P. aztecus et P. japonicus, F3 ;P. monodon, F2 ; P. stylirostris and P. vannamei F1. For P. aztecus et P. mondon maturation is induced by unilateral eyestalk ablation. The animals behavior copulation and external signs of ovarian, development are described. The factors which seem essential to the proper progress of maturation are the temperature, the light intensity, the food and the state of health of the animals.
Le développement des élevages de crevettes Pénéidés est actuellement limité par les problèmes que pose l'obtention en routine de la reproduction en captivité. En Polynésie où aucune espèce d'intérêt commercial ne se trouve à l'état naturel, cette obtention était un préalable nécessaire. Les observations effectuées au Centre Océanologique du Pacifique du CNEXO ont porté sUr 6 espèces du genre Penaeus (P. merguiensis, p. aztecus, P. japonicus, P. monodon, P. vannamei et P. stylirostris) élevées et maintenues dans des bacs extérieurs de 12 m² en circulation ouverte. Avec des températures variant de 25 à 32°, une salinité de 35 et un pH voisin de 8,2, maturations et pontes s'obserVent toute l'année et plusieurs générations ont été obtenues : P. merguiensis, F7 ; P. aztecus et P. japonicus, F3 ;P. monodon, F2 ; P. stylirostris et P. vannamei, F1. Pour P. aztecus et P. mondon, la maturation est induite par épédonculation unilatérale. Le comportement des animaux, la copulation et les signes extérieurs du développement des ovaires sont décrits. Les facteurs qui paraissent essentiels au bon déroulement du processus de maturation sont la température l'éclairement, l'alimentation et l'état de santé des animaux

Résumé : Batch culture experiments using viral enrichment were conducted to test the response of a coastal bacterial community to autochthonous (i.e., co-existing) or allochthonous riverine viruses. The effects of viral infections on bacterial dynamics and activity were assessed by epifluorescence microscopy and thymidine incorporation, respectively, whereas the effect of viral infection on bacterial community composition was examined by polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism 16S ribosomal RNA fingerprinting. The percentages of high nucleic acid-containing cells, evaluated by flow cytometry, were significantly correlated (r (2) = 0.91, n = 12, p < 0.0001) to bacterial production, making this value a good predictor of active cell dynamics along the study. While confinement and temperature were the two principal experimental factors affecting bacterial community composition and dynamics, respectively, additions of freshwater viruses had significant effects on coastal bacterial communities. Thus, foreign viruses significantly reduced net bacterial population increase as compared to the enrichment treated with inactivated virus. Moreover, freshwater viruses recurrently and specifically affected bacterial community composition, as compared to addition of autochthonous viruses. In most cases, the combined treatment viruses and freshwater dissolved organic matter helped to maintain or even enhance species richness in coastal bacterial communities in agreement to the 'killing the winner' hypothesis. Thus, riverine virus input could potentially influence bacterial community composition of the coastal bay albeit with modest modification of bulk bacterial growth.

Résumé : Studying the larval dispersal of bottom-dwelling species is necessary to understand their population dynamics and optimize their management. The black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) is cultured extensively to produce black pearls, especially in French Polynesia's atoll lagoons. This aquaculture relies on spat collection, a process that can be optimized by understanding which factors influence larval dispersal. Here, we investigate the sensitivity of P. margaritifera larval dispersal kernel to both physical and biological factors in the lagoon of Ahe atoll. Specifically, using a validated 3D larval dispersal model, the variability of lagoon-scale connectivity is investigated against wind forcing, depth and location of larval release, destination location, vertical swimming behavior and pelagic larval duration (PLD) factors. The potential connectivity was spatially weighted according to both the natural and cultivated broodstock densities to provide a realistic view of connectivity. We found that the mean pattern of potential connectivity was driven by the southwest and northeast main barotropic circulation structures, with high retention levels in both. Destination locations, spawning sites and PLD were the main drivers of potential connectivity, explaining respectively 26%, 59% and 5% of the variance. Differences between potential and realistic connectivity showed the significant contribution of the pearl oyster broodstock location to its own dynamics. Realistic connectivity showed larger larval supply in the western destination locations, which are preferentially used by farmers for spat collection. In addition, larval supply in the same sectors was enhanced during summer wind conditions. These results provide new cues to understanding the dynamics of bottom-dwelling populations in atoll lagoons, and show how to take advantage of numerical models for pearl oyster management.

Résumé : The literature has identified a set of factors explaining the accumulation of capital. However, little attention has been paid to the impact of cultural beliefs. This paper, based on economic science, uses data collected from 207 haitian formal sector firms to develop and test a model of capital accumulation integrating socio-cultural traits, including life in the present moment, fatalism, primacy of the hereafter and mutual assistance. The results reveal that the primacy of the beyond, life in the present moment and mutual aid have negative and significant impacts on accumulation of capital. And, fatalism has positive and significant effects on this variable.
La littérature a identifié un ensemble de facteurs expliquant l'accumulation du capital. Cependant, les travaux ne se sont que très peu intéressés à l'impact des croyances culturelles. Ce papier, relevant de la science économique, utilise des données collectées auprès de 207 entreprises du secteur formel haïtien pour élaborer et tester un modèle d'accumulation du capital intégrant des traits socioculturels, notamment la vie dans l'instant présent, le fatalisme, la primauté de l'au-delà et l'entraide mutuelle. Les résultats révèlent que la primauté de l'au-delà, la vie dans l'instant présent et l'entraide mutuelle ont des impacts négatifs et significatifs sur l'accumulation du capital. En revanche, le fatalisme a des effets positifs et significatifs sur cette variable. Mots clés. Accumulation du capital, croyances, traits socioculturels.

Résumé : Les stocks des éléments dans les sols, et en particulier ceux du carbone, sont en constante évolution sous l’effet de facteurs naturels (climat, végétation, teneurs en argiles, etc.) et anthropiques (usages des sols, etc.). Notre objectif est donc, (i) de mieux comprendre les relations entre type de sol, système de culture et quantité de carbone stockée, (ii) d’étudier les conséquences des changements d’usage et de gestion des terres sur les formes de matière organique dans les sols et (iii) de préciser le rôle de la matière organique sur les propriétés physiques des sols.Des situations agro-pédologiques représentatives des trois grands modèles minéralogiques des sols tropicaux (Sols à allophanes (argiles non cristallisées), Sols à argiles 1/1 et Sols à argiles 2/1) et présentant des systèmes culturaux de différents niveaux d’intensification (monocultures intensives destinées à l’exportation, systèmes paysans faiblement intensifiés, etc.) ont ainsi été sélectionnées sur les sols de Martinique. Par ailleurs, afin de limiter les effets des usages antérieurs des parcelles, nous avons généralement choisi des situations culturales âgées au minimum de 3 ans.L’analyse des stocks de carbone des différentes parcelles fait apparaître des comportements différents : dans les sols à allophanes, il y a un effet de la minéralogie sur la stabilisation des matières organiques ; dans les sols à argiles cristallisées, il existe une corrélation entre la teneur en carbone (ou le stock organique) et la texture (ou teneur en éléments fins), aussi bien pour les situations non cultivées que pour les situations sous cultures. L’amplitude des variations (diminution) des stocks en carbone observées sous l’effet de différents modes de gestion des sols, dépend elle aussi de la texture : dans les sols sableux, la potentialité de séquestration du carbone est faible ou nulle, en revanche, les potentialités de stockage du carbone sont plus fortes dans les sols argileux.L’estimation des stocks totaux de carbone à l’échelle de la Martinique, pour un mètre de profondeur et pour une situation moyenne entre les cartes d’usage des terres de 1969/1970 et 1979/1980, s’élèvent à 11,859 Mt de C calculés pour 95,8% de la surface.La distribution de la matière organique du sol varie avec la texture du sol : dans les sols sableux, à faibles teneurs en matière organique, les matières organiques sont principalement associées aux fractions sableuses ; dans les sols argileux, plus riches en matières organiques, 50 à 60 % de la matière organique sont associées à la fraction argileuse. De même, la dynamique de la matière organique dépend également de la texture du sol : dans les sols sableux, les variations des stocks organiques sont essentiellement dues à la perte ou à l’accumulation en carbone de la fraction sableuse ; dans les sols argileux, la fraction argileuse participe de manière prépondérante aux variations des stocks organiques de ces sols lors de leur mise en culture ou en prairie ; les sols sablo-argileux ont un comportement intermédiaire entre ces deux pôles.La stabilité structurale varie avec la minéralogie. Les andosols (ou ALL) présentent un haut degré d’agrégation et de stabilité, du à la présence d’allophanes et à leur association particulière avec les composés organiques. Dans les sols à argiles cristallisées, la stabilité de l’agrégation est plus élevée dans les sols à argiles 1/1 (ou LAC) ; les valeurs les plus faibles sont généralement observées dans les parcelles sur sols à argiles 2/1 (ou HAC). En outre, la mise en culture se traduit généralement par une diminution de la stabilité de l’agrégation.L’intensification des cultures (labours fréquents, faibles restitutions de matière organique au sol, etc.) accentue la perte de la stabilité de l’agrégation provoquée par la mise en culture, en particulier dans les parcelles sur sols à argiles 2/1 (ou HAC).
Soils elements stocks, and particularly those of carbon, are in constant evolution under natural factors effect (climate, vegetation, clays content, etc) and anthropic factors effect (soils uses, etc). Our objective is thus, (i) to better understand the relations between soil, farming system and stored carbon quantity, (ii) to study the consequences of soils uses changes and of soils managements changes on organic matter shapes in soil and (iii) to specify organic matter role on soil properties physics.Representative agri-pedological situations of the three great mineralogical models of tropical soils (allophonic soils (not crystallized clays), 1:1 clay soils and 2:1 clay soils) and presenting agricultural systems of various levels of intensification (intensive monocultures intended for export, slightly intensified farming systems, etc) were thus selected in the soils of Martinique. In addition, to limit the effects of their former uses, we generally chose to the minimum 3 years old farming situations.The analysis of the various lands carbon stocks reveals different behaviors: in allophonic soils, a correlation exists between carbon content (or organic stock) and texture (or fine elements content), as well for not cultivated as for cultivated situations. Variations ranges (reduction) of carbon stocks observed under various management soils systems effect, also depends on texture: in sandy soils, carbon sequestration potentiality is low or null, on the other hand, carbon storage potentialities are higher in clay soils.The estimation of total carbon stocks on the scale of Martinique, for one meter of depth and for and average situation between the use soils charts of 1969/70 and 1979/80, rises to 11,859 Mt of C calculated for 95,8% of the surface.Soil organic matter distribution varies with soil texture: in sandy soils, with low contents of organic matter, organics matters are mainly associated with the sandy fractions; in clay soils, richer in organic matters, 50 to 60% of the organic matters are associated with the argillaceous fraction. In the same way, the organic matter dynamics also depends on soil texture: in sandy soils, organic stocks variations are primarily due to carbon loss or accumulation of the sandy fraction; in clay soils, the argillaceous fraction takes part in a dominating way in organic stocks variations of these soils at the time of their setting in culture or meadow; the sand-clay soils have an intermediate behavior between these two poles.Structural stability varies with mineralogy. Andosols (or ALL) present a high degree of aggregation and stability, due to the presence of allophones and their particular association with the organics compounds. In crystallized clay soils, aggregation stability is higher in 1:1 clay soils (or LAC); the lowest values are generally observed in the lands on 2:1 clay soils (or HAC). Moreover, culture setting generally results in aggregation stability reduction.Cultures intensification (frequent ploughings, low organic matter restitutions to the soil, etc) accentuates aggregation stability loss caused by culture setting, particularly in lands on 2:1 clay soils (or HAC).

The article deals with the intercultural exchanges between two cultural movements rooted in the African Diasporas. In Guadeloupe, a French island in the Caribbean, Gwo-ka was born on the plantation in the 17th century. Blues appeared in the southern United-States by the end of the 19th century. In order to illustrate the similarities between these two afro-diasporic cultural phenomena, the article first examines the economic and social factors that prompted their emergence. Second, it compares their socio-cultural functions within their respective communities. Using Paul Gilroy’s theory of the Black Atlantic, the article concludes with a questioning of his thesis within the framework of the present study.
L’article s’intéresse à l’interculturalité entre deux phénomènes culturels que sont le Gwo-ka et le Blues issus de la diaspora africaine aux Amériques. Le Gwo-ka est une expression culturelle née en Guadeloupe, île française située dans la mer des Caraïbes. Le Blues est également une expression culturelle née dans le Sud des États-Unis. À partir de l’analyse de leur « matrice » sociohistorique, il s’agira de mettre en évidence les rapprochements entre les différentes fonctions socioculturelles. Nous tenterons de comprendre si la théorie de l’Atlantique Noir de Paul Gilroy, reliant les communautés afro-diasporiques du Nouveau Monde, est valable dans le cadre de notre sujet d’étude.

Résumé : Despite the increasing importance of cruise tourism worldwide, very little is known about the lives of cruise-ship employees, and how they use their free time at the ports of call. This paper presents the results of a small-scale exploratory research on the activities of cruise crew and staff members on the island of Cozumel, Mexico, an important port of call for Caribbean routes. Conducted in 2009, qualitative research for this paper included participant observation and several informal conversations and semi-structured interviews with twenty cruise-ship employees and six owners and employees of local businesses. Our conclusions confirm other authors' findings and provide fresh information on the factors that determine these individuals' choices of activities, places and company. Availability of time and money depends on each worker's place in the labor hierarchy, but choices are also influenced by cultural background. More in-depth research will be needed at the demand as well as the offer sides to complement these preliminary findings.
Malgré l'importance croissante du tourisme de croisière dans le monde, on sait très peu sur la vie des employés des navires de croisière, et comment ils utilisent leur temps libre dans les ports d'escale. Cet article présente les résultats d'une recherche exploratoire à petite échelle sur les activités de l'équipage et le staff de croisière sur l'île de Cozumel, au Mexique, un important port d'escale pour les voyages dans les Caraïbes. Réalisée en 2009, la recherche qualitative pour ce document comprenait l'observation participante, plusieurs conversations informelles et des entretiens semi-structurés avec vingt employés des navires de croisière et avec six propriétaires et employés des entreprises locales. Nos résultats confirment les conclusions d'autres auteurs mais apportent aussi de nouvelles informations sur les facteurs qui déterminent les choix individuelles concernant les activités, les lieux et ceux qui les accompagnent. La disponibilité de temps et d'argent, liées à la position de chaque travailleur dans la hiérarchie de l'emploi, sont importants, mais les choix sont également influencés par leur culture. Des investigations plus détaillées sont nécessaires en ce qui concerne l'offre et la demande pour compléter ces résultats préliminaires.
A pesar de la creciente importancia del turismo de cruceros en todo el mundo, se sabe muy poco sobre la vida de los empleados de cruceros, y cómo utilizan su tiempo libre en los puertos de escala. Este trabajo presenta los resultados de una investigación exploratoria a pequeña escala sobre las actividades de la tripulación de los cruceros en la isla de Cozumel, México, un puerto de escala importante para las rutas del Caribe. Realizado en 2009, la investigación cualitativa para este trabajo incluyó la observación participativa, varias conversaciones informales y entrevistas semi-estructuradas con veinte empleados de cruceros y seis propietarios y empleados de empresas locales. Nuestras conclusiones confirman las conclusiones de otros autores y aportan además nuevos datos sobre los factores que determinan las elecciones que se hace con respecto a las actividades, los lugares y la compañía. Disponibilidad de tiempo y dinero, relacionados con la posición de cada trabajador en la jerarquía laboral, son importante pero las opciones también están influidas por su cultura. Más investigación en profundidad se necesitará con respecto a la demanda, así como con respecto a la oferta, para complementar estos resultados preliminares.

Résumé : After a period of rapid development of the sites (an increase in both reared surface area and production), tropical shrimp aquaculture is currently being faced with critical problems due to economical and ecological constraints. In many countries with favourable conditions for shrimp aquaculture such as indonesia or Vietnam, sites are often badly selected and/or over-exploited. This conducts to sorne extent to decreases or collapses in the production due to the difficulty in predicting the maximum production capacity of the sites. Furthermore, it appears that production sustainability depends on many factors among which socio-economy and ecolo gy are of prime importance. The STD3 project titled « Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the environment in tropical countries using hydrobiology, ecology and remote sensing as helping tools for diagnosis )) was initiated in 1994, with the aim to study the sustainability of marine shrimp aquaculture in tropical areas, main! y Indonesia and Vietnam, through the following tasks: (i) improve site selection and study the impact of aquaculture on marine environments presenting a variable sensitivity to organic sewage, (ii) analyse the socio-economical aspects and profitability of the aquaculture industry and of common resources (iii) use remote sensing and geographical data bases for diagnosis and monitoring of site degradation (iv) reinforce the capacity of Asian scientists through training. Severa! aquaculture sites have been investigated in the Lampung region (South Sumatra, Indonesia), the Mekong delta (Vietnam) and on the West coast of New-Caledonia, providing a large range of typical ecosystems encountered in Asia and in the Pacifie, from coralline sites to coastal plains with mangrove and deltaic areas. The study concerned the spatial structure and seasonal influence of these ecosystems, the temporal variation during the course of the project (3 years) and the relation between the ecological structure and farm productions. Remote sensing provides a synoptic vision over large land expanses. Severa! scenes were processed for landuse mapping using conventional classification techniques. Concerning water quality assessment, a general relation for the Java sea was found between image and field data in terms of total suspended matter. Applying this relation to a new site in Sumatra has provided an initial approach to water type and, together with land use mapping, a preliminary assessment of the suitability of the area to shrimp aquaculture development. Socio-economic research has been focused on the identification ofneeds for collective action, including public policy, in the perspective of shrimp farming sustainability. The main concern is in the regulation of shrimp farming intensification and extensification at the scale of coastal ecosystemic entities in a common property resource management perspective. The common considered here is coastal water quality. Comparing the local development profiles and the institutional grounds for the design and implementation of collective management rules shows that variables such as land tenure system, farm owner socio-economic profile, social homogeneity or heterogeneity of the farmers are key factors to analyse the potential for sustainability. The defmition of water quality and the possible means to ensure its collective management are discussed. The main conclusion is that the economie incentives to farming development are strong but there is no significant difference among traditional, semi-intensive and intensive systems in terms of economie efficiency or wealth distribution. The description of the functioning of the different kinds of ecosystems make it possible to give an advice concerning the positioning of the activity inside the ecosystem, and furthermore to have a reference state in order to determine the impact of the activity on the coastal environnement. This impact can be summarized as an increase in the concentration of total suspended matt€?r, of particulate organic matter and of sulfate reducing bacterias. This organic ma~.er is either issued from rearing activities or from telluric origine, due to mangrove eradication when building the ponds. An evaluation of the relationship existing between productivity and characteristics of each ecosystem bas been conducted by correlating ecological indicators data (concentration of total suspended matter, particulate organic matter, chlorophyll, percentage of pheopigments in total pigments and cyanobacteria and sulfatereducing bacteria in water and sediments) with the average production of the farms. This comparison lead to the compilation of a scale of observed production integrating the range of these environmental parameters with shrimp production levels, bound to facilitate the positioning of shrimp farming in relation with the confmement leve! of each ecosystem. Lastly, ali geographie data originated from the various compartments of the study have been geo-referenced and loaded into a geographical information system. This allows to display any query made on spatial variables and their related statistical data, including the ir variations over the last few years and to reveal patterns and phenomena otherwise not obvious.
Le programme mis en oeuvre par la DRV (Paris, CREMA-L'Houmeau, DELIAO Brest, COP Tahiti, GIE/RA Nouvelle Calédonie), dans le cadre d'un projet européen STD3 «(Sciences et Technique au Service du Développement», en collaboration avec l'Université de Montpellier II, l'Ecole Nationale d'Agronomie de Rennes, l'ITC (Hollande), l'Institut Océanographique de Nha Trang (Vietnam), le BADC de Jepara et le BPPT de Jakarta (Indonésie), avait pour but la mise au point de méthodes permettant d'améliorer la sélection des sites ainsi que le suivi du développement et de l'impact de l'aquaculture des crevettes Péneides en milieu tropical pour éviter la surexploitation. Quatre axes de recherche ont été défmis : a) identifier la nature et quantifier les rejets de déchets issus de ce type d'aquaculture, b) définir les caractéristiques écologiques des écosystèmes susceptibles d'accueillir l'activité aquacole et suivre leur évolution sous l'influence des rejets, c) déterminer l'influence de la gestion des fermes et des ressources (aspects économiques) sur les performances de productivité, d) déterminer la capacité de la télédétection comme outil de diagnostic d'impact à l'échelle de la région, e) mener un programme de formation d'étudiants et jeunes chercheurs Vietnamiens et Indonésiens.

Résumé : PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Malaria represents one of the most important selective factors affecting human populations. Several inherited diseases of red blood cells lead to resistance at the erythrocytic stage. Among patients who experience hereditary elliptocytosis related to mutations of erythrocyte membrane proteins, molecular studies have shown the prevalence of particular spectrin mutations in patients from black ethnic extraction, leading one to question the selection of new malaria-resistant genes. RECENT FINDINGS: Prospective epidemiological and molecular studies in West Africa have confirmed the prevalence (between 0.6 and 1.6%) of particular spectrin mutations related to hereditary elliptocytosis. These studies have also revealed the frequency of alpha-spectrin chain polymorphisms, associated in cis with elliptocytogenic spectrin mutations and defining particular spectrin allele haplotypes. Culture studies of Plasmodium falciparum in elliptocytes bearing such elliptocytogenic alleles of spectrin showed that these alleles are supplementary genetic factors of malaria resistance in vitro. SUMMARY: Certain instances of spectrin mutations or polymorphisms have not yet been shown to constitute new factors of innate resistance to malaria in vivo. Epidemiological surveys of hereditary elliptocytosis and parasite culture studies, however, have argued that the relationships between parasite and spectrin-based skeleton should be examined more closely and the molecular interactions between parasite ligands and particular spectrin chain domains should be characterized.

Résumé : The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most oligotrophic marine areas on earth where nitrogen fixation has formally believed to play an important role in carbon and nitrogen fluxes. Although this view is under debate, the diazotrophs responsible for this activity have still not been investigated in the open sea. In this study, we characterised the surface distribution and species richness of unicellular and filamentous diazotrophs across the Mediterranean Sea by combining microscopic counts with size fractionated in situ hybridization (TSA-FISH), and 16S rDNA and nifH genes phylogenies. These genetic analyses were possible owing to the development of a new PCR protocol adapted to scarce microorganisms that can detect as few as 1 cell ml(-1) in cultures. Low concentrations of diazotrophic cyanobacteria were detected and this community was dominated at 99.9% by picoplankton hybridized to the Nitro821 probe, specific for unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacteria (UCYN). Among filamentous cyanobacteria only 0.02 filament ml(-1) of Richelia were detected in the eastern basin, while small (0.7-1.5 mu m) and large (2.5-3.2 mu m) Nitro821-targeted cells were recovered at all stations with a mean concentration of 3.5 cell ml(-1). The affiliation of the small Nitro821-targeted cells to UCYN-A was confirmed by 16S and nifH phylogenies in the western Mediterranean Sea. In the central and the eastern Mediterranean Sea no 16S rDNA and nifH sequence from UCYN was obtained as cells concentration were close to, or below PCR detection limit. Bradyrhizobium sequences dominated nifH clone libraries from picoplanktonic size fractions. A few sequences of gamma-proteobacteria were also detected in the central Mediterranean Sea. While low phosphate and iron concentrations could explain the absence of Trichodesmium sp., the factors that prevent the development of UCYN-B and C remain unknown. We also propose that the dominating picoplankters probably developed specific strategies, such as associations with protists or particles, and/or photosynthetic activity, to acquire carbon for sustaining diazotrophy.

Résumé : SODACAL prawn farm which was set up as a pilot farm for the development of a prawn industry in New Caledonia, saw its production exponentially rise from 1984 to 1992 (to 400 t/year, then experienced a sharp drop in 1993 (250 t/year) which carried on until 1997, and finally rose back to a stabilizing level around 400 t/year until 1999. The study analyses the difficulties observed before and during the drop of production. Among them, mortality outbreaks, other biological perturbations (benthic mat clearing and crab and fish mortality) and focus on the noxious state of the bottom (reduced and smelling sulfide hydrogen). It particularly shows that Syndrome 93 outbreaks could be observed on this farm from 1990. The analysis highlights the particular climatic conditions in New Caledonia from 1990 to 1995 (drought) and their potential impact on the production. The development of this very particular process of physical and topographic differential evolution of the pond bottom under wind action (accumulation and digging) and its consequences on pond preparation is explained. This work takes a close look at the grow-out management : age and quality of post larvae, pond stocking with pre-grown animals, feed characteristics and management, water exchange management and pumping capacity, strategy on density and size of harvested animals. The results have been assessed using a distinctive tool, the "survival differential", allowing inter-pond comparisons within a site, inter-farms comparisons over pluri-annual periods of time. >From the commented farm results over a 20 year period, we could distinguish the principal factors responsible for the drop of grow-out capacity of some ponds. We have outlined a conceptual description of the different parameters leading to the decrease of survival, an epidemiological scenario and a synoptic table of the history of events and their relative severity. The study draws the hypothesis of a cumulative effect of positive factors, which could have led back to satisfying production results: a physical and biochemical restoration of pond bottoms, a modified and standardized grow-out management, an appropriate pumping capacity and the come back of adequate climatic conditions. This case study illustrates the concept of « flexibility » of the farming capacity and the sustainability of prawn farming in New Caledonia. The clear objective of this 20 year historic investigation was to get relevant information, in order to improve the understanding on the "summer syndrome" which hits two farms at the moment, and to participate in the hypothesis under study by the DAC (2005). We also tried to make the new farmers aware of the fragility of the pond ecosystem, and give some common-sense advices in the hope that such problems will not happen again in other places.
La ferme de SODACAL, conçue à l'origine comme une ferme de démonstration pour le développement d'une filière d'aquaculture exportatrice de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie a connu une phase de croissance exponentielle de sa production de 1984 à 1992 (jusqu'à 400 t/an), puis une chute brutale en 1993 (250 t/an) qui s'est prolongée jusqu'en 1997 et enfin une reprise à partir de 1998 pour arriver à une stabilisation autour de 420 t/an depuis 1999. L'étude inventorie les dysfonctionnements observés avant et pendant la crise de production. Parmi ceux-ci sont évoqués les épisodes de mortalité de crevettes, d'autres désordres biologiques (décollements de tapis benthique et « hécatombes » de crabes et de poissons), l'état délétère des fonds (sédiments réduits et odeur d'hydrogène sulfuré). Elle permet notamment de montrer que des épisodes de mortalité typiques du Syndrome 93 pouvaient être observés sur cette ferme dès 1990. L'étude met en évidence les conditions climatiques remarquables qui ont sévi en Nouvelle-Calédonie de 1990 à 1995 (sécheresse) et leur impact probable sur les élevages. La genèse du phénomène très particulier d'évolution physique et topographique des fonds des bassins par l'effet du vent (accumulation et creusement) et des conséquences sur la préparation des bassins est explicitée. Ce travail aborde la gestion zootechnique : l'âge et la « qualité » des post larves, la pratique des ensemencements à partir d'animaux pré grossis, la gestion de l'alimentation et la nature de la provende, le contrôle du renouvellement d'eau et la capacité de pompage, le choix des densités et du calibre des animaux récoltés. Les résultats ont pu être évalués à travers un outil original «le différentiel de survie », permettant des comparaisons inter-bassins au sein du site, inter-fermes à des périodes pluri annuelles distinctes. A partir des résultats commentés de la ferme obtenus sur 20 années, on a pu distinguer les principaux facteurs qui ont provoqué cette chute d'aptitude culturale de certains bassins. Un schéma conceptuel des différents paramètres ayant conduit à la baisse des survies, un scénario épidémiologique ainsi qu'un tableau synoptique de la chronologie des évènements et de leur relative sévérité sont esquissés. Le rapport ébauche l'hypothèse d'un cumul de causes favorables qui ont permis le retour à des résultats zootechniques satisfaisants : une réhabilitation physique et biochimique des fonds de bassins, une zootechnie modifiée et standardisée, une capacité de pompage adéquate et une climatologie de nouveau favorable. Cette étude de cas permet ainsi d'illustrer les notions d « élasticité » de l'aptitude culturale et de durabilité de la crevetticulture en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Le but de cette enquête historique sur 20 ans est l'acquisition d'informations pertinentes permettant d'améliorer la compréhension du « Syndrome d'été » qui affecte actuellement deux fermes de production et ainsi aider à compléter le scénario hypothétique avancé par le Dac (2005). Enfin, au travers de cet historique, on a cherché également à sensibiliser les nouveaux opérateurs de la filière sur la fragilité de l'écosystème-bassin et présenter quelques conseils de bon sens pour éviter que de tels phénomènes ne se reproduisent ailleurs.

BACKGROUND: In a malaria-endemic area the distribution of patients is neither constant in time nor homogeneous in space. The WHO recommends the stratification of malaria risk on a fine geographical scale. In the village of Cacao in French Guiana, the study of the spatial and temporal distribution of malaria cases, during an epidemic, allowed a better understanding of the environmental factors promoting malaria transmission. METHODS: A dynamic cohort of 839 persons living in 176 households (only people residing permanently in the village) was constituted between January 1st, 2002 and December 31st, 2007.The information about the number of inhabitants per household, the number of confirmed cases of Plasmodium vivax and house GPS coordinates were collected to search for spatial or temporal clustering using Kurlldorff's statistical method. RESULTS: Of the 839 persons living permanently in the village of Cacao, 359 persons presented at least one vivax malaria episode between 2002 and 2007. Five temporal clusters and four spatial clusters were identified during the study period. In all temporal clusters, April was included. Two spatial clusters were localized at the north of the village near the Comté River and two others localized close to orchards. CONCLUSION: The spatial heterogeneity of malaria in the village may have been influenced by environmental disturbances due to local agricultural policies: deforestation, cultures of fresh produce, or drainage of water for agriculture. This study allowed generating behavioural, entomological, or environmental hypotheses that could be useful to improve prevention campaigns.

Gevokizumab is a potent anti-interleukin (IL)-1 beta neutralizing monoclonal antibody (mAb), which may be used for treating inflammatory or autoimmune diseases. The present study was designed to characterize the potential effects of this mAb towards well-established IL-1 beta-mediated repression of hepatic drug detoxifying proteins, like cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4 and drug transporters. Primary cultured human hepatocytes were exposed to various concentrations of IL-1 beta in the absence or presence of gevokizumab (5 A mu g/mL); mRNA expression and activity of CYP3A4 and transporters were next determined. Gevokizumab was found to down-modulate, but not abolish, the repression of CYP3A4 and drug transporter mRNAs caused by IL-1 beta in human hepatocytes, through shifting up IL-1 beta half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values by factors ranging from 6.8 to 10.4. The mAb concomitantly shifted IL-1 beta IC50 values towards CYP3A4 activity from 22.0 pg/mL (in the absence of gevokizumab) to 796 pg/mL (in the presence of gevokizumab) and counteracted the decrease of organic anion-transporting polypeptide activity occurring in response to 50 pg/mL IL-1 beta, but not that occurring at higher IL-1 beta concentration (1000 pg/mL). Gevokizumab attenuates, but not abolishes, IL-1 beta-mediated functional repression of CYP3A4 and drug transporters in human hepatocytes, which agrees with the fact that the mAb is considered as a modulator and not a blocker of IL-1 beta signaling. This attenuation of IL-1 beta-mediated down-regulation of hepatic detoxifying proteins by gevokizumab may have to be evaluated in terms of potential therapeutic protein drug-drug interactions when considering future development and therapeutic uses of this IL-1 beta neutralizing mAb.
