Many countries are legally obliged to embrace ecosystem-based approaches to fisheries management. Reductions in bycatch and physical habitat damage are now commonplace, but mitigating more sophisticated impacts associated with the ecological functions of target fisheries species are in their infancy. Here we model the impacts of a parrotfish fishery on the future state and resilience of Caribbean coral reefs, enabling us to view the tradeoff between harvest and ecosystem health. We find that the implementation of a simple and enforceable size restriction of >30 cm provides a win:win outcome in the short term, delivering both ecological and fisheries benefits and leading to increased yield and greater coral recovery rate for a given harvest rate. However, maintaining resilient coral reefs even until 2030 requires the addition of harvest limitations (<10% of virgin fishable biomass) to cope with a changing climate and induced coral disturbances, even in reefs that are relatively healthy today. Managing parrotfish is not a panacea for protecting coral reefs but can play a role in sustaining the health of reefs and high-quality habitat for reef fisheries.

Résumé : Bycatch of marine turtles, vulnerable or endangered species, is a growing issue of all fisheries, including Oceanic purse-seine fishery. The present paper seeks to assess marine turtle bycatch at a spatial and temporal level in the European purse seine fishery operating in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The study was based on data collected through French and Spanish observer programs from 1995 to 2011, a period where more than 230 000 fishing sets were realized by the UE fleets in both Oceans. A total of 15 913 fishing sets were observed, including 6 515 on drifting Fish Aggregate Devices (FAD) and 9 398 on Free Swimming Schools (FSC). Over the study period, 597 turtles were caught, 86% being released alive at sea. At the same time, from 2003 to 2011, 14 124 specific observations were carried out on floating objects whether they ended in a set or not. 354 marine turtles were observed upon which 80% were already free or entangled alive and therefore released alive. At the temporal and spatial level, data were organized and analysed by Ocean, fishing mode (FAD vs. FSC) as well as by year, quarter and statistical square of 1°. In order to evaluate the impact if this fishery in both Oceans, bycatch distribution was compared to the total fishing effort of the UE fleet, as well as to the known marine turtle post nesting migration routes, nesting population abundances and known feeding areas. The species composition, the size and sex structure of bycatch are also discussed here. At last, an attempt to raise the data to the total fishing effort was carried out. Based on observation of marine turtle by-catches on sets, we estimated that, globally, 3500 marine turtles were accidentally captured by the EU-PS fleet in the Atlantic Ocean from 1995 to 2010, and around 2000 in the Indian Ocean from 2003 to 2010, with a corresponding annual bycatch rate of 218 (SD=150; survival rate =91%) and 250 (SD=157; survival rate =77%) respectively in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. However, because of important uncertainties mainly due to the low observation coverage and the scarcity of marine turtle bycatch events, it was impossible to produce solid and reliable global estimates of marine turtle bycatch and mortality due to PS activity.

Résumé : 1. Approximately 300 pelagic fish species naturally aggregate around floating objects (FOBs) at the surface of the oceans. Currently, more than 50% of the world catch of tropical tuna comes from the industrial tuna fisheries around drifting FOBs. Greater understanding of the complex decision-making processes leading to this aggregation pattern and the impact of the massive release of artificial FOBs by fishermen on the spatial distribution and management of tuna is needed. 2. We analyse how the interplay between social (relationships between individuals) and non-social (responses to the environment) behaviours may affect the spatial distribution of a population in a multi-FOB environment. Taking the example of tropical tunas associating with FOBs and using differential equations and stochastic simulations, we examine how, when increasing the number of FOBs, fish aggregation dynamics and the distribution of the population among patches are affected by the population size, level of sociality and the natural retentive and/or attractive forces of FOBs on individual tuna. 3. Our model predicts that, depending on the species' level of sociality, fish will be scattered among FOBs or aggregated around a single FOB based on the number of FOBs deployed in a homogeneous oceanic region. 4. For social species, we demonstrated that the total fish catch is reduced with increasing FOBs number. Indeed, for each size of population, there are a number of FOBs minimizing the total population of fish associated with FOBs and another number of FOBs maximizing the total population of associated fish. 5. Synthesis and applications. In terms of fisheries management, the total catch volume is directly linked to the total number of floating objects (FOBs) for non-social species, and any limit on the number of sets would then result in a limit on the total catch. For social species (e.g. tuna), however, increasing the number of FOBs does not necessarily lead to an increase in the total catch, which is a non-intuitive result. Indeed, our model shows that, for specific values of the parameters, deploying a greater number of FOBs in the water (all other parameters being constant) does not necessarily help fishermen to catch more tuna, but does increase the level of fishing effort and bycatch.

Résumé : In the bycatch of a scientific campaign in the Bay of Biscay (VITAL 2002) a third specimen of Psolus tessellatus Koehler, 1896 was collected very close to the type locality. This specimen is here fully illustrated and designated as the neotype.

Résumé : This work is in line with the fishing technology section of the DUHAL (Durability of Halieutic activities) action. It aims to reduce the "side" catches associated with shrimp fishing in French Guyana. Shrimp trawling is indeed considered as one of the fishing activities which generates the most waste. The campaign carried out in November/December 2006 had lead to the following conclusions [...]
Ce travail s'inscrit dans le volet technologie pêche de l'action DUHAL (DUrabilité des activités HALieutiques). Son objectif est de réduire sensiblement les captures accessoires associées à la pêche crevettière guyanaise. En effet, le chalutage crevettier est considéré comme une des activités de pêche professionnelle le plus génératrices de gaspillage. La campagne menée en novembre/décembre 2006 avait conduit aux conclusions suivantes : Fenêtre à mailles carrées de 100 mm Les dispositifs à mailles carrées de 100 mm à la jauge, placés sur le dessus de la rallonge, occasionnent des pertes très importantes en crevettes commerciales. Différentes raisons peuvent expliquer ce résultat : − L'emplacement de la fenêtre est sans doute trop près de la poche. Le périmètre de la poche est de 120 mailles de 45 mm à la jauge, or la dimension de la fenêtre est peut être trop importante par rapport à ce périmètre. − Un maillage réduit pourrait diminuer ces pertes. Les résultats sur les poissons de grande taille indiquent une capture plus importante avec le chalut sélectif. L'amélioration de la filtration du chalut imputable aux grandes mailles peut expliquer ce phénomène déjà rencontré dans d'autres pêcheries. Les résultats sur les rejets sont encourageants. Fenêtre à mailles carrées de 70 mm Le dispositif à mailles carrées de 70 mm à la jauge, placé sur le dessus du gorget, occasionne encore des pertes en crevettes non négligeables, bien que sérieusement réduites par rapport au dispositif à mailles de 100 mm. L'action sur les animaux de grande taille est faible. La réduction des captures accessoires (8%) est plus modeste qu'avec le dispositif précédent (23 et 30%). TED L'usage du TED conduit à une perte en crevettes encore importante (23%). Considérant les conditions de pêche guyanaises, on peut envisager d'ajouter à l'avant de la grille un voile concentrateur. Ce dernier permettra de canaliser les différents animaux sur le bas de la grille avant le tri et permettra sans doute de réduire les pertes en crevettes. L'action sur les animaux de grande taille est assez sensible, en particulier sur les raies. L'action sur les rejets est visible (25%) et va dans le sens de la réduction du « gaspillage » pour cette pêcherie.Suite à ces essais et aux travaux menés en juillet 2006, une nouvelle campagne d'essais a été programmée pour valider définitivement les résultats liés à l'usage d'un TED et pour tester un nouveau dispositif sélectif (grille Nordmore) associé à un BRD (Bycatch Reducing Device) particulier, le RES (Radial Escape Section).

Résumé : Bycatch of endangered marine turtles is a growing issue for the management of all fisheries, including the oceanic purse-seine fishery. The aim of this study was to assess the spatial and temporal variation in bycatch rates of these species in the entire European purse-seine fishery operating in the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The study was based on data collected through observer programs from 1995 to 2011. During that period, a total of 15 913 fishing sets were observed, including 6 515 on Drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (DFADs) and 9 398 on free swimming schools, representing a global coverage of 10.3% and 5.1% of the total fishing activity in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, respectively. Moreover, from 2003 to 2011, 14 124 specific observations were carried out on DFADs to check turtle entanglement in the net covering DFADs. We found that the purse-seine fishery has a very low impact on marine turtles. We estimated that the annual number of individuals incidentally captured was 218 (SD = 150) and 250 (SD = 157) in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, respectively, with more than 75% being released alive. The present study also investigated the impact of DFADs; which is considered a key conservation issue for this fishery. Drifting objects may play a key role in aggregating juveniles of marine turtles, implying the need for improving their construction to avoid entanglement (e.g. avoiding nets in the structure); however, based on our study it is not the main source of incidental captures of marine turtles in this fishery.
