People standing at the window of a retail store. This building’s walls feature 1960s inspired contemporary art paintings of flowers, text, and a stylized bird. Art paintings on the building’s walls include the following statements “I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet” and “Sock It to Me.” According to the Barbados Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office (CAIPO), "I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet" was registered in Barbados on November 25, 1968. "I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet" was a boutique store in London during the 1960s, which sold secondhand uniforms and military memorabilia. This image also features the store’s memorable sign which was inspired by the famous 1914 military recruitment poster designed by Alfred Leete. The sign and poster features Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener, then Secretary of State for War, pointing at the viewer with the words “Your Country Needs You.” However, this store's sign also features the Union Jack flag behind Lord Kitchener’s image. According CAIPO, The Bornn Bay Rum Co. was registered in Barbados on September 3, 1940. It was a subsidiary of the Bornn Distilling Co. of New York. The Jinnah Memorial Mosque, completed by 1954, was named for the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The mosque serves as the headquarter for the Trinidad Muslim League, established in 1947. The mosque’s design includes South Asian Islamic architectural elements, for example the main dome is topped with a crescent and star and flanked by two minarets. The mosque is located in the Saint Joseph neighborhood of Port of Spain. In the image, three men are gathered near a bicycle on the side walk in front of the mosque. Slide labeled Trin. 5.

A rural memorial to Our Lady of Charity of Cobre, Cuba's patron saint. The picture shows several children leaving flowers to the saint, which is believed to bring prosperity. La Virgen is a focus of popular devotion in Cuba, not just for Catholics but also for followers of Santería as well as even those who are not otherwise religious. The beloved Virgin of Charity was declared the patron saint of Cuba by the pope in 1916.

This photograph shows a large building which is part of Havana's public square, which was originally called la Plaza Cívica (Civic Square), but after the Cuban Revolution was renamed "Plaza de la Revolución" or "Revolution Square." The large tower is a memorial to Jose Marti, which was erected during the Presidency of Fulgencio Batista. The square and the memorial were completed in 1959, the year that Fidel Castro came to power. This picture includes many vehicles of the 1950. In front of the building are two billboards. The billboard on the right is a political ad for, then president Batista. It reads "Paz, Trabajo, progreso" - meaning "Peace, Work and Progress."
The 109 m (358 ft) tower, designed by a team of architects led by Enrique Luis Varela, is in the form of a five-pointed star, encased in grey Cuban marble from the Isla de la Juventud.

The Rodney Memorial, flanked by two canons, was built to commemorate the victory of Admiral Lord George Brydges Rodney in the Battle of the Saints in 1782. The Garden of Remembrance, pictured in the foreground, houses a stone cenotaph, a monument which serves as a memorial to Bahamians who lost their lives in World Wars I and II. In the background is the building currently known as the Ansbacher House, which is the home of Ansbacher (Bahamas) Limited. Previously the building housed the Bahamas International Trust Company Limited, known as “BITCO”, which was established in 1957. In 1989, BITCO was sold to the Ansbacher Group of Companies and which later changed its name to Ansbacher (Bahamas) Limited in 1994. Slide labeled Public Sq Nassau, April 12 '65.

BACKGROUND: The insecticide chlordecone was extensively used in the French West Indies to control banana root borer. Its persistence in soils has led to the widespread pollution of the environment, and human beings are still exposed to this chemical. Chlordecone has been shown to impair neurological and behavioural functions in rodents when exposed gestationally or neonatally. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of prenatal and postnatal exposure to chlordecone on the cognitive, visual, and motor development of 7-month-old infants from Guadeloupe. METHODS: Infants were tested at 7 months (n=153). Visual recognition memory and processing speed were assessed with the Fagan Tests of Infant Intelligence (FTII), visual acuity with the Teller Acuity Card, and fine motor development with the Brunet-Lezine. Samples of cord blood and breast milk at 3 months (n=88) were analyzed for chlordecone concentrations. Postnatal exposure was determined through breast feeding and frequency of contaminated food consumption by the infants. RESULTS: Cord chlordecone concentrations in tertiles were associated with reduced novelty preference on the FTII in the highly exposed group (β=-0.19, p=0.02). Postnatal exposure through contaminated food consumption was marginally related to reduced novelty preference (β=-0.14, p=0.07), and longer processing speed (β=0.16, p=0.07). Detectable levels of chlordecone in cord blood were associated with higher risk of obtaining low scores on the fine motor development scale (OR=1.25, p<0.01). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that pre- and postnatal low chronic exposure to chlordecone is associated with negative effects on cognitive and motor development during infancy.

Résumé : Dans la mémoire collective des Antilles, les moulins ne semblent être qu’une image isolée, sans contexte ni humain ni historique, une machine veuve de son travail et de sa fonction, une réalité déjà morte, puisque dénuée de sens et donc ignorée des regards. L’objectif de l’article est de redonner aux moulins l’importance qu’ils ont perdue dans la mémoire collective, de réintroduire la conscience de la nature même des machines, de leurs relations mutuelles, mais aussi de leurs relations avec l’homme et des valeurs impliquées dans ces relations. Étudier les machines, c’est comprendre les évènements passés, interpréter les paysages et surtout rendre hommage aux Hommes.
In the collective memory of the West Indies, mills seem to be an image without human or historical context i.e. a machine deprived of its former significance it had for production of a commodity. Mills are not viewed in their former context as an important relict of the past. The purpose of the article is to give back to mills the importance that they have lost in the collective memory by reintroducing their relationship with man and the values involved in these relationships. Studying the function of machines leads to an understanding of past events, helps to interpret landscapes and especially pays tribute to the role of man.

Résumé : Cette étude démontre que l’écriture du roman The Swinging Bridge constitue une action de récupération de la mémoire féminine indienne qui réactive les liens entre Indo-Trinidadiens du Canada et Indo-Trinidadiens vivant à Trinidad tout en rétablissant une relation avec l’Inde des origines. Elle montre que, dans l’espace du roman, des relations s’établissent entre le centre historique réel ou mythique des établissements dispersés, et des sociétés d’installation par le biais d’une intrigue qui amène personnages et lecteurs à la conscience de former un peuple en diaspora.Elle analyse les procédés littéraires d’une récupération de la mémoire qui révèle, rectifie et réorganise dans une nouvelle cohérence des fragments épars réintroduisant dans la mémoire collective les qualités ancestrales d’indépendance de la femme indienne. Elle révèle le caractère hybride de l’identité culturelle diasporique qui se construit tout au long du roman puis analyse les enjeux pour l’écrivain féminin postcolonial diasporique de cet acte de représentation.Elle conclut que cette représentation constitue une réécriture contre discursive de l’Histoire trinidadienne et qu’elle introduit la définition d’un continuum identitaire indo-américain qui contribue à résorber la dislocation et la fragmentation qui caractérisent cet espace essentiellement diasporique.
This work proposes to read The Swinging Bridge as a process by which a hybrid Indo-Trinidadian Diaspora is created. It argues that the novel’s recovery of memory constitutes a process by which individual memories turn into a collective diasporic memory which re-establishes links between Indo-Trinidadians dispersed in Canada and Trinidad. We demonstrate that rebinding to the Trinidadian space and recovering part of the memory of the Indian historical centre set the three spaces in a diasporic relation.This study also demonstrates that the novel’s narrative semantics rejects cultural conflict, as well as essentialism and creates a hybrid cultural identity. It establishes that the construction of diaspora at work in The Swinging Bridge advocates for the appreciation routes rather than roots and is compatible with the idea of a multi-locational diasporic consciousness.

Chlordecone is a persistent organochlorine pesticide that was used in the French West Indies until the early 1990s for banana weevil borer control. Human exposure to this chemical in this area still occurs nowadays due to consumption of contaminated food. Although adverse effects on neurodevelopment, including tremors and memory deficits, have been documented in experimental studies conducted with rodents exposed during the gestational and neonatal periods, no study has been conducted yet to determine if chlordecone alters child development. This study examines the relation of gestational and postnatal exposure to chlordecone to infant development at 18 months of age in a birth-cohort of Guadeloupean children. In a prospective longitudinal study conducted in Guadeloupe (Timoun mother-child cohort study), exposure to chlordecone was measured at birth from an umbilical cord blood sample (n=141) and from a breast milk sample collected at 3 months postpartum (n=75). Toddlers were assessed using an adapted version of the Ages and Stages Questionnaire. Higher chlordecone concentrations in cord blood were associated with poorer fine motor scores. When analyses were conducted separately for boys and girls, this effect was only observed among boys. These results suggest that prenatal exposure to chlordecone is associated with specific impairments in fine motor function in boys, and add to the growing evidence that exposure to organochlorine pesticides early in life impairs child development.

Diana Paton is Reader in Caribbean History at the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University. She is the author of No Bond but the Law: Punishment, Race, and Gender in Jamaican State Formation, 1780-1870 (Durham: Duke University Press, 2004), and co-editor, with Pamela Scully, of Gender and Slave Emancipation in the Atlantic World (Durham: Duke University Press 2005). For her publications on obeah and Caribbean religion, please see the publications page. Gemma Romain specialises in researching Caribbean and Black British history. She currently works as a Research Associate for The Equiano Centre, Department of Geography, UCL and also undertakes freelance historical research and public engagement. She was Vera Douie Fellow at the Women’s Library during 2011, documenting interwar Black histories within the collections of the Women’s Library and was previously Leverhulme Early Career fellowship at Newcastle University. Her publications include Connecting Histories: A Comparative Exploration of African-Caribbean and Jewish History and Memory in Modern Britain (Kegan Paul, 2006) and co-edited with David Cesarani, Jews and Ports Cities, 1590-1990: Commerce, Community and Cosmopolitanism (Vallentine Mitchell, 2006). Gemma wrote the initial drafts of most of the text on the website. Maarit Forde worked with Diana on an earlier phase of this project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust. She researched obeah prosecutions and prosecutions under the Shouters Prohibition Ordinance in the Port of Spain Gazette, co-organized the conference that led to the publication of Obeah and Other Powers, and co-edited the book. Previous research on this project has also been funded by Newcastle University and the British Academy.
