Résumé : This small, Greek Revival memorial borders the east side of the Plaza de Armas. It commemorates the city's first Catholic mass and town council meeting, which took place on the site in 1519. The temple was built in 1828. The first mass took place under a silk-cotton tree, so a tree of this species shades El Templete. Once or twice each century, the tree grows too large for the site, and is replaced.

He was born at Wormwood Gate, Dublin to Edward Madden, a silk manufacturer. He was educated at private schools. He studied medicine in Paris, Italy, and St George's Hospital, London. While in Naples he became acquainted with Lady Blessington and her circle.[1] Madden was employed in the British civil service from 1833, first as a justice of the peace in Jamaica, where he was one of six Special Magistrates sent to oversee the eventual liberation of Jamaica's slave population, according to the terms of the Slavery Abolition Act 1833. From 1835 he was Superintendent of the freed Africans in Havana. His son, Thomas More Madden, who later became a surgeon and writer, was born there. In 1839 he became the investigating officer into the slave trade on the west coast of Africa, in 1847 the secretary for the West Australian colonies. He returned to Dublin and in 1850 he was named secretary of the Office for Loan Funds in Dublin.[2] He died at his home in Booterstown, just south of Dublin city, in 1886 and is interred in Donnybrook Cemetery.

In mutualisms, each interacting species obtains resources from its partner that it would obtain less efficiently if alone, and so derives a net fitness benefit. In exchange for shelter (domatia) and food, mutualistic plant-ants protect their host myrmecophytes from herbivores, encroaching vines and fungal pathogens. Although selective filters enable myrmecophytes to host those ant species most favorable to their fitness, some insects can by-pass these filters, exploiting the rewards supplied whilst providing nothing in return. This is the case in French Guiana for Cecropia obtusa (Cecropiaceae) as Pseudocabima guianalis caterpillars (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) can colonize saplings before the installation of their mutualistic Azteca ants. The caterpillars shelter in the domatia and feed on food bodies (FBs) whose production increases as a result. They delay colonization by ants by weaving a silk shield above the youngest trichilium, where the FBs are produced, blocking access to them. This probable temporal priority effect also allows female moths to lay new eggs on trees that already shelter caterpillars, and so to occupy the niche longer and exploit Cecropia resources before colonization by ants. However, once incipient ant colonies are able to develop, they prevent further colonization by the caterpillars. Although no higher herbivory rates were noted, these caterpillars are ineffective in protecting their host trees from a pathogenic fungus, Fusarium moniliforme (Deuteromycetes), that develops on the trichilium in the absence of mutualistic ants. Therefore, the Cecropia treelets can be parasitized by two often overlooked species: the caterpillars that shelter in the domatia and feed on FBs, delaying colonization by mutualistic ants, and the fungal pathogen that develops on old trichilia. The cost of greater FB production plus the presence of the pathogenic fungus likely affect tree growth.

Résumé : La manufacture de la soie est une industrie qui fut présente en France, mais aussi dans les colonies durant la moitié du xviie siècle. Elle représentait le luxe dans le secteur textile. Pourtant, il n’y a pas d’études sur la question. Elle est oubliée au profit de la culture du sucre, davantage étudiée. Cet article permet de comprendre les efforts faits afin de l’implanter dans les Antilles. La Métropole voulait développer une alternative au sucre, tandis que les colons voulaient rester dans l’économie servile et rentable avec le système des habitations et des raffineries. La question de la dépendance est présente avec des opinions très différentes.
The manufacture of silk, is an industry that was present in France and also in the colonies during the mid-seventeenth century. It was the luxury in the textile sector. However, there are no studies on the issue. It’s forgotten in favor of the cultivation of sugar, which is present in the studies. This article provides an understanding of the efforts to promote the Caribbean. France wanted to develop an alternative to sugar, while the settlers wanted to stay in the profitable slave economy with system habitations and refineries. The dependence is present with very different opinions.

Wasp nests range from simple to complex structures made of paper or mud. Here, we show that a Neotropical wasp of the genus Nitela builds its nest entirely by weaving endophytic fungal hyphae and spider silk harvested from the leaves growing in the understory of the rain forest in French Guiana.
