Decolonization and social change in the French West Indies (1946-1961) ; Décolonisation et changement social aux Antilles françaises. De l'assimilation à la "Départementalisation" ; socio-histoire d'une construction paradoxale (1946-1961) Auteur(s) : Lavenaire, Maël, Auteurs secondaires : Archéologie Industrielle, Histoire, Patrimoine- Géographie, Développement, Environnement de la Caraïbe [EA 929] (AIHP-GEODE) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Université des Antilles Jean-Pierre SAINTON Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : The social change which takes place in the French West Indies after the Second World War ensues from a historical interactive process. It occurs between 1946 and 1961, within the frame of the new dynamic fostered in the aftermath of the war. Here we refer to the new political status of Department, the outbreak of social conflicts during the process of decolonization, the public policies and the planning of “the economic and social development” of the overseas departments. The dynamic also includes the population growth with the birth of a new generation- from the sociological point of view. The aforementioned interaction instils the new type of society emerging in the French West Indies since the 1960’s, without drastically changing their colonial social structure. This transformation named “Departmentalization” seems paradoxical because it will generate “modern” social frustrations, while maintaining existing frustrations that stemmed from the plantation society. This process led to the transition from a slave society to a consumer society. It allows us to understand the persistence of a latent social unrest in these departments, in spite of the overall significant improvement of the living conditions during the early twentieth century.
The present article opens the issue of Etudes Caribéennes dedicated to the study of social movements and analyzes the theoretical significance of emotion within the emergence and maintenance of these sociological phenomena. Rejected by classical theorists as dangerous aberration, emotion will be consecutively reintegrated by neo-classical theorists, then once again rejected by modern rationalists or ignored by constructivists, and finally totally reintegrated, even centered within the theoretical framework adopted by certain contemporary post-modern sociologists. Contributions to this issue of Etudes Caribéennes reflect the new strides made by emotion within the integrative post-modern theory of social movements. Social conflict in the West Indies in 2009 was highly publicized in France where it seemed exceptional, as a first event in the social field likely to shake the authority of a government previously inflexible in this area. In view of the historian, social conflict Caribbean has nothing new. He slips into a West Indian social history of the movement which is still a field little studied by the more contemporary history. A quick look back at two major social conflicts in 1959 and 1961 can relocate the impact of the social instincts of the French policy for overseas. The eye of the historian here has brought nuance to the "exceptional" at the time and recalls that out of the crisis in 2009 found strangely reminiscent of those used half a century ago! The emergence of new communication media such as blogs, online newspapers and social networks allow us to go further in the understanding of human behavior. Indeed, these public exchange spaces are now firmly planted in our modern society and appear to be powerful sensors of social behavior and opinion movements. In this paper, we focus on information spreading and attempt to understand what are the conditions in which a person decides to speak on a subject. For this purpose, we propose a set of measures that aim to characterize the diffusion behavior. Our measures have been used on messages related to two events that took place in January 2015: presentation by Microsoft of a new virtual reality headset and the election of a political party of radical left in Greece. THE CHILD, THE CREOLE AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN THE FRENCH WEST INDIES: A MULTI-FIELD APPROACH OF BILINGUALISM IN THE MOTOR LEARNING” ; « L'ENFANT, LE CREOLE ET L'EDUCATION PHYSIQUE ET SPORTIVE AUX ANTILLES FRANÇAISES : UNE APPROCHE PLURIDISCIPLINAIRE DU BILINGUISME DANS LES APPRENTISSAGES MOTEURS » Auteur(s) : Anciaux, Frédéric Auteurs secondaires : Adaptations au Climat Tropical, Exercice et Santé (ACTES) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Université des Antilles-Guyane Christian ALIN(christian.alin@iufm.univ-lyon1.fr) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : Does the language in which the instructions are formulat- ed affect the execution of a bilingual's motor task? The first experiment studies whether the language used for the instructions influences the motor performances among bilingual children in situation of learning. Eighty bilin-gual French/Creole children (age means 10.4) were distributed into two experimental groups to learn how to perform a motor task. One group received instructions in French and the other one in Creole. The data suggest that the language of presentation affects the execution of a motor task. Both groups had the same performance level at the beginning of the experiment. We noticed that the group taught in Creole obtained better performances than the group taught in French at the end of the learning situation. The results are discussed in terms of their implications to physical education and motor rehabilitation of bilinguals. The two following experiments reported in the present paper concern (i) the differential imagery value of French and Creole and (ii) the influence of language on the recall of sequences of patterned movements in a bilingual population. Creole words were obtained a higher imagery value than French words, certainly because Creole is an oral and vernacular language. Motor recall scores were better when the sequence was presented in Creole compared to French. The generation of visual images by Creole would facilitate the memorization and recall of new sequences of movements. The effect of language on imagery value of words and motor recall among bilingual French–Creole subjects was discussed in terms of nature of information encoding in each language. The goal of the fourt and last study tries to know the language impact on the movement imagery ability of guadeloupean children. A person is able to represent verbal information with an image (Denis, 1989; Paivio, 1986). The language can he influence this ability on bilingual individuals? If Creole has more to do with image than French (Michelot, 2000), this survey considers a distinct language influence on the mental images vividness specified by guadeloupean children. 123 secondary school pupils (average age 13.45) altogether accepted to fill in the Movement Imagery Questionnaire of Hall and Pongrac (1983). This test enables to measure the rapidity of visual and kinaesthetic images. The “Creole” group (59 children; average age 13. 43) got the MIQ translated in Creole and the “French” group (64 children; average age 13.46) the French version of the test. Finally, language does not generally influence the movement imagery capacity. Yet, the kinaesthetic images are more vivid in French than in Creole for the subjects tested, aged from 11 to 13. The subjects aged from 14 to 16 have, only in Creole, more vivid visual images than the subjects aged from 11 to 13. The language affects the movement imagery ability with age of this guadeloupean children.
At the beginning of 2009, a large social movement hit the island of Guadeloupe: a forty-four-day general strike. The point of this study is to historically position this recent event. It is suggested that identifying the episteme from which the LKP operates helps make sense of this social movement. Mass movements, nationalism, propaganda are the tools the group uses to fight the “pwofitans” – the capitalists. And these tools cannot be considered as jamais vu but indeed as déjà vu and, probably, reja vu. I propose here to reinsert the ideological impact of LKP in its own context and history and to compare it to many similar movements in the 19th and 20th centuries. This article observes that Jehovah’s Witnesses share similarities with a social movement. The writer uses the descriptions that sociologists such as Alain Touraine and Herbert Blumer give of social movements. The author of this article then goes on to show that those characteristics can be found in the Watchtower Society. He then concludes that the Jehovah’s Witness movement can be considered as a social movement due to its characteristics. The article deals with the intercultural exchanges between two cultural movements rooted in the African Diasporas. In Guadeloupe, a French island in the Caribbean, Gwo-ka was born on the plantation in the 17th century. Blues appeared in the southern United-States by the end of the 19th century. In order to illustrate the similarities between these two afro-diasporic cultural phenomena, the article first examines the economic and social factors that prompted their emergence. Second, it compares their socio-cultural functions within their respective communities. Sociability vs Network Dynamics: Impact of Two Aspects of Human Behavior on Diffusion Phenomena Auteur(s) : Stattner, Erick Collard, Martine Vidot, Nicolas Auteurs secondaires : Laboratoire de Mathématiques Informatique et Applications (LAMIA) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience In this work, we focus on the issue of diffusion in dynamic networks. We begin by proposing a generic framework that merges two essential aspects of the problem: diffusion and network dynamics. Then, our framework is used for comparing effects of two aspects of the human behavior, sociability and network dynamics. On the one hand the dynamics of the network is related to the movements of individuals in a social space that lead ephemeral social proximity contacts. On the other hand the diffusion phenomenon is studied through the epidemic paradigm. The results obtained by simulations provide original insight about how and why the "social dynamics" of individuals, related to the proximity in a social space and its evolutions, influences diffusion phenomena through a population. From the moment the first Africans were brought to the Americas, religious life has become a way to transcend a humiliating and desperate life. Their lives were made of long days of forced work, inhuman living conditions, punishments and ill treatments of all sorts. Religious practice gave them a window onto another world. Over the years, it has slowly become a space of freedom and unique expression. The Black Church acted as a social movement on behalf of the African-american community. It has become a place of freedom which gradually has supported the foundations of their political expression and their demand of social justice. Understandably, as religion has always played a central role in North America, it is no wonder that it would play a central function in the liberation of slaves. Between the ideals of a divided nation and those of a marginalized community, the article analyzes the birth of the African-american church during slavery. Then, it examines the impact of African-american protestantism in the Caribbean through the life of George Leile, the first African-american missionary in Jamaica. Socio-historical approach of the disabled sport movement in Guadeloupe: social, identity and sports stakes in associations dynamics (1978-2010) ; APPROCHE SOCIO-HISTORIQUE DU MOUVEMENT HANDISPORT EN GUADELOUPE : ENJEUX SOCIAUX, IDENTITAIRES ET SPORTIFS DES DYNAMIQUES ASSOCIATIVES (1978-2010). Auteur(s) : Villoing, Gael Auteurs secondaires : Adaptations au Climat Tropical, Exercice et Santé (ACTES) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Université Montpellier I Anne Marcellini Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : Since its apparition at the end of the second world word, the practice of sport for people suffering with motor deficiency has known numerous and quick evolutions. Initially conceived in the science of rehabilitation therapy, it now integrates more and more the principle of performance by getting closer to “ordinary” sport movements. However, this process of sportivisation is variable depending on the social and cultural context in which it is taking place. Initiated at the start of the 1970’s, Guadeloupe’s Movement for Sport for People with motor impairments has been meeting recurring difficulties in how to organise and federate itself. During this work, we have conducted a survey directly with the local disabled sport associations. Meetings with the principal actors of this movement had been taking place, archives had been gathered and both direct and participative observations had been carried out in order to retrace the collective history and to identify the individual theories utilised in the formation of Guadeloupe’s Movement for Sport for Disabled People. For this we have used the tools of the socio-history and of the organizational analysis and handled the speeches with an analyse of the relationship by opposition (ARO). The main results bring to light that the associative dynamics which structure the sport practices of Guadeloupe’s disabled people are impregnated by a sport logic combined with social, cultural and identity stakes. Therefore the principal thesis defended in the process of the research is that the organisation of Guadeloupe’s Movement for Sport for Disabled People is impregnated by the highly contextual strategies where the identities -sport, Caribbean, disabled- produces some very particular adjustments. People with motor impairments,Disability,Sport,Association,Guadeloupe,Identities Socio-history. According to the classical theories of power, asymmetrical relations generally favor the most powerful actor in terms of resources. However, the most powerful in terms of strength and resources part does not always win in negotiations. This depends on several factors, including negotiation tactics of the weaker party. Our thesis aims to analyze different type of negotiation strategies that weaker parties can use to obtain some benefit. To illustrate this point, we chose the example set by a number of developing countries (DV) to challenge the patenting of life contained in the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). Our goal was to understand the key strategies they have used to question this norm and rebalance it. To make this work, we used the concept of hegemony conceptualized by Gramsci and the concept of framework borrowed from the literature of social movements. This tool has allowed us to make the assumption that TRIPS is a hegemonic norm that mainly benefit to few developed countries and international companies. However, this domination is hidden by the norms thanks to universal and positive discourse which help to generate strong adhesion. Thus, in such a case, developing countries can’t expect to challenge this norm without a change of perception. It is therefore necessary that the rules perceived as fair and immutable are framed as unjust and mutable, so that countries decide to challenge it. We then tested this hypothesis through a content analysis of the DC’s official discourse at the World Trade Organization. This work has allowed us to observe that the framing is an important tool in the fight against the norm’s hegemony. Indeed, it offers the possibility to show that the patenting of life, far from presenting just a source of benefits, is also a source of problems that need solutions. The frame is also a good way to develop alternative normative propositions. However, we found that this strategy is insufficient to translate DC’s proposals into binding norms. In order to obtain changes in the agreement, building coalitions is particularly relevant for DC. Furthermore, we noted that DC which require regulatory changes when the structure of political opportunities is opened are more likely to obtain what they want. This thesis offers us a general picture of negotiations strategies and reveal that under certain conditions the weaker parties can get some gains in an asymmetrical negotiation. http://www.theses.fr/2013AGUY0642/document | Partager |
Natural hazards in the French West Indies : an overall view ; Risques naturels dans les Antilles françaises: une vision d’ensemble ; Rischi naturali nelle Antille Francese: una visione globale Auteur(s) : D'Ercole, Robert Auteurs secondaires : Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) M. Panizza M. Soldati D. Barani Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Dipartamento di Scienze della Terra, Università degli Studi di Modena Résumé : International audience The aim or this paper is to give an overall view of the natural hazards and risks affecting the French West Indies. These are mainly connected with hurricanes, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes which have caused several deaths and seriously weakened the local economy during the last three centuries. First of all the geological and geographical conditions which determine the natural predisposition of the French West Indies to geophysical and atmospheric hazards are described. Then the risk for the population is taken into account, both in terms of' the direct effects of the above mentioned hazards and of the side-effects, that is tidal waves, floods and mass movements. Finally the economic and social impact of natural disasters on the French West Indies and the difficulties arising in risk mitigation are shown. Globalizing the Western Balkans: Transnational Crime, Fundamental Islam and Unholy Alliances Auteur(s) : Arsovska, Jana Basha, Dimal Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : During the last couple of decades, the countries of the world have become increasingly interconnected into a single capitalist economic system. Globalization processes have facilitated the flow of goods and services. They have also led to new forms of exclusion, inequality and “culture conflict”. This paper elaborates on the nexus between transnational organized crime networks, fundamental Islamic movements and terrorist groups in the Balkan region, and argues that these movements for social, political and economic change are bi-products of globalization. After the fall of the Soviet Union, criminal-political formations expanded drastically in the newly emerging Balkan democracies. The weak government structures, the deteriorating domestic economy and the vulnerable government institutions made the Balkan region a safe haven for war profiteers, career criminals and fundamental Islamists. This paper gives a detailed overview of the origin, nature and expansion of several politicized illicit markets in the Balkans. It further elaborates on the birth of fundamental Islamic movements after communism. The complex interrelation between globalization, wars, organized crime and fundamental Islam is at the forefront of this paper. Multimodal study of the impact of graphomotor training Auteur(s) : Rémi, Céline Vaillant, Jean Nagau, Jimmy Plamondon, Réjean Auteurs secondaires : Laboratoire de Mathématiques Informatique et Applications (LAMIA) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Laboratoire scribens ; Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal (EPM) CARIBBEAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience Graphomotor control constitutes a condition to the mastery of literacy and more widely to successful school apprenticeship. The Guadeloupian context is marked by significant rates of early school leaving and illiteracy. In such context, our research is concerned with two questions: “Does graphomotor training can help since kindergarten to strengthen graphomotor performances and the progression of literacy?” and “Which methodological approach can help to characterize the impact of graphomotor training?” By using online acquisition devices, we have tried to characterize the graphomotor skills for 132 pupils. These 3 to 5 years old children were submitted to 3 methods of graphomotor training. One of the methods that suppose family involvement, includes activities inspired by kid’s early scribbles. We considered the statistical analysis of the blind feedbacks of the teachers, of the features provided by the visuo-spatial processing of handwritten productions and of features provided by the sigma-lognormal modeling of the pupils’ movements. The results of this multimodal study show an increase in graphomotor control and in interest for drawing and handwriting tasks. The implication of these preliminary results on the pedagogical and co-educative choices is discussed. Yves Mazabraud, Thomas Forissier, Alain Pietrus, Olivier Gros, Claire Anjou. Quaternary volcano-lacustrine patterns and palaeobotanical data in southern Armenia Auteur(s) : Ollivier, Vincent Nahapetyan, Samuel Roiron, Paul Gabrielyan, Ivan Gasparyan, Boris Chataigner, Christine Joannin, Sébastien Cornée, Jean-Jacques Auteurs secondaires : Laboratoire méditerranéen de préhistoire Europe-Afrique (LAMPEA) ; Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) - Aix Marseille Université (AMU) - Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication (MCC) - Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives (Inrap) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) ARCHEORIENT - Environnements et sociétés de l'Orient ancien (Archéorient) ; Université Lumière - Lyon 2 (UL2) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Centre de Bio-Archéologie et d'Ecologie (CBAE) ; Université Montpellier 2 - Sciences et Techniques (UM2) - École pratique des hautes études (EPHE) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Laboratoire Chrono-environnement (LCE) ; Université Bourgogne Franche-Comté (UBFC) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) - Université de Franche-Comté (UFC) Paléoenvironnement et paléobiosphère (PP) ; Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Maison des Sciences de l'Homme et de l'Environnement Claude Nicolas Ledoux (MSHE) ; Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) - Université de Franche-Comté (UFC) Géosciences Montpellier ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Institut national des sciences de l'Univers (INSU - CNRS) - Université de Montpellier (UM) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement [Gif-sur-Yvette] (LSCE) ; Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ) - Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA) - Université Paris-Saclay - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Elsevier Résumé : International audience The morphogenetic evolution of the Lesser Caucasus has been strongly influenced by Plio-Quaternary volcanic and tectonic events and Pleistocene glaciations. Fluvio-lacustrine environments, indicated by diatomaceous deposits, prevailed in the Syunik region of southern Armenia during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. The Pleistocene diatomaceous deposits studied contain leaf impressions and pollen, allowing local palaeoclimatic reconstructions. The chronology of morphogenetic events has been determined by 17 radiometric dates (K/Ar, Ar/Ar, U/Th), palaeomagnetic investigations and is placed in a spatial context by a detailed geomorphological map and a 24-km geological transect of the Vorotan valley, the main area studied. Before 1.21 Ma, tectonic movements (antecedents of the lower part of the Vorotan valley) generated extensive lake formations with diatomaceous deposits. From 993 ka, volcanic eruptions produced lava flows that covered the fluvio-lacustrine accumulations. During Marine Isotopic Stages 12, 6 and 4, glaciers and fluvio-glacial deposits were probably present overall the principal uplands and valleys of southern Armenia. At 53.68 ka (MIS 3), 12.6 ka, 10.78 ka and 4.14 ka (MIS 1), the development of travertines on some slopes and in some valleys highlights temperate and humid climatic phases. Palaeobotanical studies of leaf and pollen floras show that the vegetation changed several times from forested to steppic phases in response to the climate oscillations of the Lower Pleistocene. This work proposes a first morphogenic and palaeoclimatic reconstruction from the lower Pleistocene to the Postglacial period, when the first settlements of the population in the Lesser Caucasus were influenced by tectono-volcanic events, lake level changes and glacialeinterglacial oscillations forced by the obliquity orbital parameter (41 ky cycles). Imagerie visuelle et rappel moteur d'enchaînements : effet du bilinguisme français vs créole Auteur(s) : Anciaux, Frédéric Caliari, Peddy Alin, Christian Le Her, Michel Féry, Yves-André Auteurs secondaires : Centre de recherches et de ressources en éducation et formation (CRREF) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Elsevier Masson Résumé : International audience The two experiments reported in the present paper concern (i) the differential imagery value of French and Creole and (ii) the influence of language on the recall of sequences of patterned movements in a bilingual population. The principle of antiphony, more commonly known as "call-response" is often mentioned in the contextual configuration of an artistic expression, whether literary, as in Toni Morrison’s novels for example, or in music, in most cases. It represents the process that will frame and format the modalities of communication between members of an audience and a performer, a creator. This article proposes a broader and cross-reading approach of this typical habitus among black communities in the Americas, especially in contemporary contexts of the Civil Rights Movements and of the aesthetic renewal of Jazz, after the Swing era.
