Portrait de Maïotte Almaby
Les Rendez-vous numériques en histoire de l'art des Antilles - Episode 1
Published on 4 december 2023
This first episode highlights a painting by Jacques Weismann, a portraitist of stars, entitled Martiniquaise ou Portrait de Maïotte Almaby, compositeur de musique. The scene is set at the Casino de Paris, the legendary venue where the artist performed in March 1935, the year of the Tricentennial celebrations of the French West Indies' attachment to France. A talented singer, musician and composer of biguine, Maïotte Didier, Mrs. Almaby, was represented at the pinnacle of her artistic career. Trained at the Paris Conservatoire, then a music teacher at the Colonial boarding school for girls in Fort-de-France, she triumphed in the black Paris of the Roaring Twenties, writing the song Madiana for Josephine Baker. The episode takes us into the inter-war period, when a republican assimilationist imagery was being constructed through West Indian arts and folklore, by a black and mixed-race political, intellectual and artistic elite from the “old colonies” trying to assert itself in an imperial context of strong racial discrimination.
