The Abacos are a group of islands and cays in the Bahamas that form a 120-mile-long chain stretching over 650 square miles. Great Abaco is the second largest island in the Bahamas with one third of the country’s population. Many of smaller islands and cays in the area were settled by British Loyalist after the American Revolutionary War. Marsh Harbour is a town on Great Abaco located closest to Man of War Cay. This image features boats anchored neared a dock, which could either be on Man of War Cay or Marsh Harbor. In the distance, across the bay, is a gazebo. Nelson’s Dockyard National Park, a Georgian-era dockyard, is Antigua’s largest national park. During the 18th century, the harbor served as a base for the British Navy but eventually went into disuse. In the 1950s, the Friends of English Harbour began a restoration project of the dockyard and its facilities, transforming the Admiral’s House into a working museum and center for archaeological research. Today, Nelson’s Dockyard is also used as a marina for yachts and ships. This image shows various types of boats docked in the harbor surrounding Nelson's Dockyard with the mountains in the distance.

The British Colonial Hotel, now (2013) the British Colonial Hilton Hotel, is located on the site of Fort Nassau which was demolished in 1837. By 1900, Henry Flagler had built the original Colonial Hotel, the only beachfront hotel in Nassau, which was destroyed by fire. A Mediterranean-style replica opened in 1922. The hotel was built adjacent to Nassau Harbor and was the location for two James Bond movies. In this image is a view of the British Colonial Hotel and boats anchored in Nassau Harbor.

Résumé : At the outbreak of war with Spain in 1898, the U.S. Army was very small in numbers. This situation necessitated an immediate call for volunteers. President McKinley's appeal was overwhelmingly answered by a generation that had grown up in the shadow of their elders' Civil War glory. One group answering the call was the First Regiment of the U.S. Cavalry Volunteers, headed by Colonel Leonard Wood, a distinguished army doctor and Medal of Honor recipient. The regiment was actually the brainchild of Theodore Roosevelt, assistant secretary of the navy and Wood's friend. Roosevelt, realizing his own lack of military experience, suggested Wood for the command. The Rough Riders, as the regiment was soon known, comprised 1,250 men, including cowboys, Native Americans and eastern college athletes. Despite their dissimilarities, they were in excellent physical condition'a stark contrast to most of the other volunteer contingents. The Rough Riders departed from Tampa in mid-June without their horses. They landed at Daiquiri on June 22 and two days later served with distinction in a battle at Las Guásimas. Immediately prior to the conflict at San Juan, Colonel Wood was promoted to another field command, enabling Roosevelt as a full colonel to take command of the Rough Riders. On July 1, Roosevelt, having secured a horse, led his forces in a charge up Kettle Hill outside of Santiago. They achieved their goal and later in the day participated in the victory at San Juan Hill. By seizing these heights, American guns commanded the harbor at Santiago. The Spanish position was imperiled and an abortive attempt by the Spanish navy to escape from the harbor was halted with devastating results. Spanish land forces surrendered shortly thereafter. Roosevelt urged the Rough Riders' swift evacuation, fearing the continuing spread of disease. They returned to Montauk, Long Island, where they were held in quarantine before being mustered out in September. More than one-third of the Rough Riders were casualties in the Spanish-American War, a fact that has led some observers to criticize Roosevelt for unnecessary risk-taking. Nevertheless, the Rough Riders became heroes to the American public and Roosevelt emerged as a major national figure.

In the foreground are men in sailboats. In the background is the S.S. Yarmouth Castle. In 1927, the S.S. Evangeline, and her sister ship the S.S. Yarmouth, were built by Eastern Steamship Lines in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By 1964, the S.S. Evangeline was sold to the Chadade Steamship Company, Inc., a Panamanian company, where her name was changed from Evangeline to Yarmouth Castle. On November 13, 1965, the Yarmouth Castle, sailing from Miami, Florida to Nassau, Bahamas, sank due to fire. The CYL on the funnel stands for Yarmouth Cruise Lines. In the distance overlooking the harbor is Fort George, Grenada’s oldest fort which was built by the French in 1705. Fort George continues (2013) to function as the headquarters for the Royal Grenada Police Force, which it has housed since 1854 when the Colonial Government took over control of the fort. Flying above the fort is the Grenada flag (1967-1974). In 1967 when Grenada became a British Associated State, it adopted a blue-yellow-green flag with a nutmeg in the center. The nutmeg represented Grenada’s position as the “Spice Isle” and is also featured on the Coat of Arms. This flag was used until 1974 when Grenada gained independence. Below the fort is a red roofed house with a balcony and red and white striped window awnings. To the left of the fort is a two story house which is partially on stilts. Résumé : The overexploitation of fishery resources has led to a major fisheries crisis. In this context, artisanal fisheries, and in particular small-scale coastal fisheries, appear as relevant alternatives for a sustainable use of coastal resources. Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are more and more used as management tools for these fisheries, as protection effects and targeted access regulations may benefit to commercial fishers. Managers and scientists need then quantitative information not only to adapt their management to the fishing activity present on their territory, but also to estimate the effects of MPA management on it. This study provides catch and effort estimates that are essential for appraising and managing the artisanal fishery in the Côte Bleue Marine Park (CBMP), a French Mediterranean MPA including two No-Take Zones of different age and size. A field protocol was defined and implemented between July 2009 and June 2010 within the CBMP. Seven métiers were identified and characterized by target species, gear type, fishing grounds and fishing periods. During the one-year studied period, 3512 fishing trips and 4645 fishing operations were performed by 30 active boats in the Côte Bleue fishing territory, amounting to 9500 km of immersed nets. In total, approximately 130 tons of catch were landed in the six CBMP harbors, out of which 58% depend on the three main species caught on the Côte Bleue: hake (Merluccius merluccius), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and common sole (Solea solea). The presented methodology could be part of a long term monitoring requiring close collaboration with local fishers. It enables adaptive management with respect to changes in fishing pressure (from inside and outside the MPA) that may impact the environment and its resources.
