Rose Hall Great House in Saint James, Jamaica is an example of Caribbean Georgian architecture, was built in 1770 by John Palmer, Custos of Saint Thomas, and his wife (for whom the house is named). It eventually became the residence of their grandnephew, John Rose Palmer. In 1820, Palmer married Annie Mae Paterson. Following Annie Palmer's death, the plantation house became home to legendary story of the White Witch of Rose Hall. The Great House is built using cut stone on the first two levels and stucco on the third and uppermost level. This image was taken prior to the beginning of its reconstruction in the 1960s. Résumé : When Henry B. Plant brought the railroad to Tampa in 1884, he opened the door for many businesses to locate and flourish here. The railroad was at the center of the city's economy. From downtown it went to Port Tampa where one could board a Plant steamship to Jamaica, Cuba, New Orleans, Bermuda or other destinations. A spur of the rail line brought the train up to the west front of the hotel so guests could depart the train and walk directly into the lobby. The Tampa Bay Hotel cost approximately 2.5 million dollars to build and $500,000 to furnish. Consisting of 511 rooms, some of which were suites of 3-7 rooms, it provided a degree of luxury never before seen in Tampa. Most of the rooms had their own baths and all had electricity and telephones. In addition, guests were surrounded by a varied collection of furniture, porcelains, Venetian-style mirrors, and sculptures gathered by Mr. and Mrs. Plant in their travels in Europe. The Tampa Bay Hotel opened in 1891 amid wide fanfare and celebration. Henry Plant's dream was now a reality. The newspapers of the day described it as "brightly illuminated, filled with sumptuous decorations, thrilling music and graced with turrets, domes and minarets towering heavenward and glistening in the sun." It was a Victorian palace. The hotel was a lively place with balls, tea parties, and organized hunts during the winter social season. It was open seasonally from December to April in the 1890's. Once a guest arrived at the hotel, he needed to be entertained. Guests went wild game hunting as well as fresh and salt-water fishing. Water sports were also included like sailing, rowing, and canoeing. For the less adventuresome, there were bicycles, carriages, and rickshaws to ride you around the property. The hotel also offered golf, tennis, shuffleboard, billiards, and even a racetrack.

Maima-Seville Heritage Park, owned and operated by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, is made up of three distinct areas: the original Spanish settlement - Sevilla La Nueva, a British sugar plantation, and forested regions. The following preserved structures can be found at the site: the Governor’s castle, a Spanish sugar mill, an artisan workshop, and the remains of a Spanish settlement, a Spanish church, and a British great house. Bamboo Avenue, located in Lacovia, Saint Elizabeth, is also known as “Bamboo Walk.” This avenue, approximately 2.5 miles long, is planted with bamboos forming an arched canopy over the road. Throughout the years the bamboo grove has suffered damage and is becoming less dense. The avenue is protected under the Public Gardens Regulation Act and managed by the Public Gardens Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Slide labeled Jam. south bamboo.

Two men walk down the road lined with almond trees in Ocho Rios, Saint Ann, Jamaica. In the distance can be seen a bauxite plant. Bauxite is the principal raw material used in the production of alumina. Bauxite mining began in Jamaica in 1942, when the “red ferruginous earth” of Saint Ann was found to contain high amounts of alumina for mining. In 1944, Reynolds Metals Company and its subsidiary Reynolds Jamaica Mines began mining explorations in Saint Ann. On June 5, 1952, the first shipment of bauxite ore left Jamaica from Reynolds Jamaica Mines in Ocho Rios. Slide labeled Bauxite Plant Ocho Rios.

Castleton Botanical Garden in Saint Mary, Jamaica was established on November 19, 1862 as a relocation site for the Bath Botanical Garden, located in Bath, Saint Thomas, which began to surfer after frequent flooding by the Sulfur River in the 19th century. The Castleton Gardens are located on both sides of Junction Road. Many species of plant specimens in the garden came from Kew Gardens in London, England. Plants pictured include ferns and crotons.
