Résumé : A new benthic phototrophic dinoflagellate is described from sediments of a tropical marine cove at Martinique Island and its micromorphology is studied by means of light and electron microscopy. The cell contains small golden-brown chloroplasts and the oval nucleus is posterior. It is laterally compressed, almost circular in shape when viewed laterally. It consists of a small epitheca tilted toward the right lateral side and a larger hypotheca. In the left view, the cingulum is more anterior and the epitheca is reduced. The cingulum is displaced and left-handed. This organism is peculiar in having no apical pore and its thecal plate arrangement is 2 ' 1a 7 '' 5c 3s 5 ''' 1 ''''. The plates are smooth with small groups of pores scattered on their surface. An area with 60-80 densely arranged pores is found near the centre of the 2 ''' plate, on the left lateral side. Morphologically, these features are different from all other laterally compressed benthic genera. In addition, molecular genetic sequences of SSU and partial LSU form a distinct and well-supported clade among dinoflagellates and support the erection of a new genus. However, molecular phylogenies inferred from ribosomal genes failed to confirm any clear relationship with other benthic taxa and affinity with other laterally compressed dinoflagellates has not been demonstrated. Hence, the taxonomic affinity of Madanidinium loirii with a defined order and family is unclear at the moment.

Résumé : On 1 August 1907, Leo started the Gottsegen Cigar Company, a cigar manufacturing business, with his partners Max Stark and Sam Lefkowitz and $5,700 to form a capital stock of $10,000. The business was located in the Lower East Side at 130 Maiden Avenue. I. In 1918, Leo moved the business to Tampa and the name was changed to the Gradiaz Annis and Company (note that "Gradiaz" is a Spanishization of "God's Blessing!). From that point onward, Leo was listed as the president of the company and Julien B. Annis was vice president, secretary and treasurer.

On the left is the former court house, which was constructed in 1819 by James Delancy, on the site of a Spanish chapel and cemetery. In 1986, the court house was destroyed by fire. On the right is old King's House, or governor's mansion, completed in 1762. Thomas Craskell, the Island Engineer, was responsible for preparing the King's House building plans. The mansion was destroyed during a fire in 1925 and now houses the Jamaican People's Museum of Crafts and Technology. In the center of the image are buildings on King's Street. Introduction-objectifsBien que la prise en charge de personnes vivant avec le VIH (PVVIH) s’améliore globalement en Guyane, les disparités régionales et communautaires restent importantes. L’objectif est ici de décrire pour la première fois les caractéristiques épidémiologiques, spatiales et cliniques des PVVIH suivies en zones isolées. Matériels et MéthodesLes données présentées sont issues du suivi clinique réalisé en Centres Délocalisés de Prévention et de Soins (CDPS) de janvier 2014 à novembre 2015. Ces données ont été analysées et comparées aux données des PVVIH suivis dans les 3 centres hospitaliers de Guyane issues du logiciel Nadis®.Résultats 174 PVVIH ont étés pris en charge en CDPS et comparés à 2143 patients suivis sur le littoral. L’évolution du taux annuel de découvertes de séropositivité VIH montre une arrivée plus tardive mais particulièrement active en zones isolées par rapport au littoral, notamment chez les patients d’origine brésilienne (p<0,005). L’âge médian est de 43,8 ans, le sex ratio homme/femme est de 0,98. En zone isolées comme sur le littoral 1/3 des PVVIH sont dépistés tardivement (<200 CD4/mm3). Le succès virologiques après 6 mois de traitement est de 80% vs 88% sur le littoral (p=0,135), la moyenne des derniers CD4 (424 vs 569/mm3) est plus basse que sur le littoral (p<0,005) enfin la charge virale moyenne est plus élevée que sur le littoral (8960 vs 5317 copies /mL) (p<0,005). L’histoplasmose est la première cause d’infection opportuniste retrouvée. La répartition spatiale des patients suivis montre une incidence et prévalence de cas particulièrement élevée dans les villes frontalières charnières que constituent Maripasoula et Saint Georges de l’Oyapock. ConclusionLe caractère particulièrement actif et original de l’épidémie et les indicateurs de suivi moins bons que sur le littoral rappellent l’importance de compléter les moyens de la prise en charge des PVVIH en zones isolées en Guyane.

Résumé : Many questions remain unanswered regarding RNAi-based mechanisms and dsRNA-induced antiviral immune responses in penaeid shrimp. In this study, we report the characterization in the white leg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei of RNAi pathway associated proteins Lv-Ago 1 and Lv-Ago 2, two members of the Argonaute family of proteins, as well as Lv-sid 1, the first shrimp homologue of Sid-1, a membrane channel-forming protein implicated in the cellular import of dsRNA. To decipher their functional implication in RNAi-related phenomena, we monitored their relative expression following stimulation by specific and non-specific RNA duplexes of diverse length. The findings show that the length of small RNA duplexes plays a critical role in the activation of both RNAi-related and innate antiviral responses. They also suggest that these two mechanisms of antiviral response may activate the same pathway, requiring Lv-Sid 1 and Lv-Ago 2 induction. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The seedlings bordering the square and barely visible here have grown into large, shady trees.

Résumé : On the western coast of the Atlantic, according to the literature, 2 distinct groups of Semibalanus balanoides occur with a distinct interface near the Miramichi Estuary, New Brunswick, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. On each side of this interface, the groups are characterized by clinal variations for MPI (mannose-6-phosphate isomerase) and GPI (glucose-6-phosphate isomerase). The present study was carried out to determine whether selection occurs at this interface, to establish how early in the sessile life period it occurs and to examine the selecting forces involved. Reciprocal transplant experiments of newly settled individuals to both sides of the interface were carried out. No significant differences specifically linked to source or destination were observed in growth or fecundity for the 2 groups at the sites studied for either control or transplanted individuals. However, differences in survival were observed; individuals transplanted south of the estuary showed lower survival than individuals transplanted north. An allozyme analysis of barnacle survivors for MPI and GPI, 2 alleles whose frequencies are known to vary abruptly in this region, indicated a change of allele frequency in transplanted individuals. The transplants’ allele frequencies came to resemble those of adults from target sites, while no change occurred in transplanted individuals at control sites. Taken together with previous results, our study suggests that selection occurs very early in the newly settled individuals (spat).

Plant-ants live in a mutualistic association with host plants known as "myrmecophytes" that provide them with a nesting place and sometimes with extra-floral nectar (EFN) and/or food bodies (FBs); the ants can also attend sap-sucking Hemiptera for their honeydew. In return, plant-ants, like most other arboreal ants, protect their host plants from defoliators. To satisfy their nitrogen requirements, however, some have optimized their ability to capture prey in the restricted environment represented by the crowns of trees by using elaborate hunting techniques. In this study, we investigated the predatory behavior of the ant Azteca andreae which is associated with the myrmecophyte Cecropia obtusa. We noted that up to 8350 ant workers per tree hide side-by-side beneath the leaf margins of their host plant with their mandibles open, waiting for insects to alight. The latter are immediately seized by their extremities, and then spread-eagled; nestmates are recruited to help stretch, carve up and transport prey. This group ambush hunting technique is particularly effective when the underside of the leaves is downy, as is the case for C. obtusa. In this case, the hook-shaped claws of the A. andreae workers and the velvet-like structure of the underside of the leaves combine to act like natural Velcro that is reinforced by the group ambush strategy of the workers, allowing them to capture prey of up to 13,350 times the mean weight of a single worker.

We show here that the Amalaoulaou complex, in the Pan-African belt of West Africa (Gourma, Mali), corresponds to the lower and middle sections of a Neoproterozoic intra-oceanic arc. This complex records a 90-130-Ma-long evolution of magmatic inputs and differentiation above a subducting oceanic slab. Early c. 793 Ma-old metagabbros crystallised at lower crustal or uppermost mantle depths (25-30 km) and have geochemical characteristic of high-alumina basalts extracted from a depleted mantle source slightly enriched by slab-derived sedimentary components ((La/Sm)(N) < 1; epsilon(Nd): +5.4-6.2; Sr-87/Sr-86: 0.7027-0.7029). In response to crustal thickening, these mafic rocks were recrystallised into garnet-granulites (850-1,000A degrees C; 10-12 kbar) and subject to local dehydration-melting reactions, forming trondhjemititic leucosomes with garnet-clinopyroxene-rutile residues. Slightly after the granulitic event, the arc root was subject to strong HT shearing during partial exhumation (detachment faults/rifting or thrusting), coeval with the emplacement of spinel- and garnet-pyroxenite dykes crystallised from a high-Mg andesitic parental magma. Quartz and hornblende-gabbros (700-660 Ma) with composition typical of hydrous volcanic rocks from mature arcs ((La/Sm)(N): 0.9-1.8; epsilon(Nd): +4.6 to +5.2; Sr-87/Sr-86: 0.7028-0.7031) were subsequently emplaced at mid-arc crust levels (similar to 15 km). Trace element and isotopic data indicate that magmas tapped a depleted mantle source significantly more enriched in oceanic sedimentary components (0.2%). Exhumation occurred either in two stages (700-660 and 623 Ma) or in one stage (623 Ma) with a final exhumation of the arc root along cold P-T path (550A degrees C, 6-9 kbar; epidote-amphibolite and greenschist facies conditions) during the main Pan-African collision event (620-580 Ma). The composition of magmas forming the Cryogenian Amalaoulaou arc and the processes leading to intra-arc differentiation are strikingly comparable to those observed in the deep section of exposed Mezosoic oceanic arcs, namely the Kohistan and Talkeetna complex. This evolution of the Amalaoulaou oceanic arc and its accretion towards the West African craton belong to the life and closure of the Pharusian Ocean that eventually led to the formation of the Greater Gondwana supercontinent, a similar story having occurred on the other side of the Sahara with the Mozambique Ocean.
