Résumé : Most marine organisms disperse via ocean currents as larvae, so it is often assumed that larval-stage duration is the primary determinant of geographic range size. However, empirical tests of this relationship have yielded mixed results, and alternative hypotheses have rarely been considered. Here we assess the relative influence of adult and larval-traits on geographic range size using a global dataset encompassing 590 species of tropical reef fishes in 47 families, the largest compilation of such data to date for any marine group. We analyze this database using linear mixed-effect models to control for phylogeny and geographical limits on range size. Our analysis indicates that three adult traits likely to affect the capacity of new colonizers to survive and establish reproductive populations (body size, schooling behavior, and nocturnal activity) are equal or better predictors of geographic range size than pelagic larval duration. We conclude that adult life-history traits that affect the postdispersal persistence of new populations are primary determinants of successful range extension and, consequently, of geographic range size among tropical reef fishes.

Is it possible to construct a history of France’s ‘colonial exhibitions’ without mentioning those organized in the Nineteenth Century at Bordeaux, Nantes, Metz, Le Havre, Lyon, Rochefort, Cherbourg, Beauvais, Nice, Montauban, Rouen and Tours? By studying the scenography of these little-known provincial exhibitions, this paper seeks, firstly, to understand the economic, political and especially symbolic issues for these towns (especially the ports) around the construction of their colonial identities; secondly, it wants to determine the role of the State in the dissemination and gradual popularization of a unified national discourse.
Peut-on construire une histoire des ‘expositions coloniales’ françaises sans parler de celles organisées au XIXe siècle à Bordeaux, Nantes, Metz, Le Havre, Lyon, Rochefort, Cherbourg, Beauvais, Nice, Montauban, Rouen, Tours? En étudiant la scénographie de ces expositions provinciales peu connues, cet article propose, d’une part, de comprendre les enjeux économiques, politiques et surtout symboliques pour ces villes (particulièrement les ports) autour de la construction de leurs identités coloniales et, d’autre part, de déterminer le rôle de l’État dans la diffusion et la vulgarisation progressive d’un discours national unifié.
Si può forse ricostruire una storia delle ‘mostre coloniali’ francesi senza accennare a quelle organizzate nel XIX secolo a Bordeaux, Nantes, Metz, Le Havre, Lione, Rochefort, Cherbourg, Beauvais, Nizza, Montauban, Rouen, Tours? Analizzando la scenografia di queste mostre provinciali poco conosciute, il presente contributo si propone, in primo luogo, di mettere in luce i risvolti economici, politici e soprattutto simbolici che per quelle città (in particolare quelle portuali) si manifestarono intorno alla costruzione delle loro identità coloniali e, in secondo luogo, di determinare il ruolo dello Stato nella diffusione e progressiva estensione di un discorso nazionale unitario.

Résumé : In Martinique in the eighteenth century, the "free people of color", both those free by birth and freedmen, black or mixed race, form a legal category, which was distinct from those of whites and slaves. Comparative studies with Spanish or English territories show that no legal regulation formalized a shift - from the category of free colored people to that of White - in the French colonies between the late seventeenth century and the French Revolution. Also, this thesis proposes to show the informal process that enabled some people - the "assimilated" - to cross the color barrier. I analysed the color prejudice, a racist system, whose ideology, supported by local regulations, legitimized the collective construction of a public and social order. In a second step, I examined the development of the color bar. The free colored people were the first to bear the brunt of the impermeability of the demarcation line and of the problems posed by the purity of blood; but some whites, through interracial unions, and Native Americans have also been targeted. Finally I thought about what made the whiteness, and the strategies to achieve whiteness, change in status. Notarial acts and 33,000 acts of parish registers treaties led to the reconstitution of genealogies, in order to examine individuals and families over generations; I observed the importance of the phenotype, whitening, legitimacy relations, privileged partners, choice of networks, wealth levels and the use of space.
À la Martinique au XVIIIe siècle, les « libres de couleur », qu’ils soient nés libres ou affranchis, noirs ou métis, forment une catégorie juridique distincte des Blancs et des esclaves. L’étude comparée, avec les territoires espagnols ou anglais, montre qu’aucune réglementation légale n’a officialisé un passage de la catégorie Libre de couleur à celle de Blanc dans les colonies françaises de la fin du XVIIe siècle à la Révolution française. Aussi, cette thèse se propose de montrer les processus officieux qui ont permis à certaines personnes – les « assimilés » – de franchir la barrière de couleur. Une réflexion a été menée sur le préjugé de couleur, système raciste dont l’idéologie, soutenue par la réglementation locale, a légitimé la construction collective d’un ordre public et social. Puis, on a examiné l’élaboration de la barrière de couleur. Les libres de couleur ont été les premiers à faire les frais de l’imperméabilisation de la ligne de démarcation et des problèmes posés par la pureté de sang ; mais les Blancs mésalliés, dans le cadre d’unions interraciales, et les Amérindiens ont aussi été visés. Enfin nous avons réfléchi à ce qui faisait la blancheur et aux stratégies adoptées pour réussir ce changement de statut. Le notariat et les 33 000 actes des registres paroissiaux traités ont donné lieu à la reconstitution de généalogies pour examiner des individus et des familles sur plusieurs générations ; on a ainsi observé l’importance du phénotype, le blanchiment, la légitimité des relations, les conjoints privilégiés, le choix des réseaux, les niveaux de fortune et l’usage de l’espace.

Résumé : From Wikipedia (March 23, 2013) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Robert_Madden : Richard Robert Madden (born Dublin, Ireland 22 August 1798, died Dublin, 5 February 1886) was an Irish doctor, writer, abolitionist and historian of the United Irishmen. He was born at Wormwood Gate, Dublin to Edward Madden, a silk manufacturer. He was educated at private schools. He studied medicine in Paris, Italy, and St George's Hospital, London. While in Naples he became acquainted with Lady Blessington and her circle.[1] Madden was employed in the British civil service from 1833, first as a justice of the peace in Jamaica, where he was one of six Special Magistrates sent to oversee the eventual liberation of Jamaica's slave population, according to the terms of the Slavery Abolition Act 1833. From 1835 he was Superintendent of the freed Africans in Havana. His son, Thomas More Madden, who later became a surgeon and writer, was born there. In 1839 he became the investigating officer into the slave trade on the west coast of Africa, in 1847 the secretary for the West Australian colonies. He returned to Dublin and in 1850 he was named secretary of the Office for Loan Funds in Dublin.[2] He died at his home in Booterstown, just south of Dublin city, in 1886 and is interred in Donnybrook Cemetery.

Résumé : La construction historique des sociétés caribéennes est indissociable des mouvements migratoires séculaires qui les ont animées. Le cadre politico-juridique favorable aux migrations antillaises vers leur métropole rend compte de la vigueur des courants migratoires issus des territoires dépendants de la région ainsi que de leur orientation quasi-exclusive vers les métropoles. La problématique migratoire se pose en des termes différents concernant les territoires indépendants. L’analyse de trois populations caribéennes — les Portoricains, les Franco-antillais, les Haïtiens — interroge la particularité des contextes politico-institutionnels des sociétés d’origine en lien avec les modalités singulières de leur colonisation. Au regard de la remarquable diversité des statuts politiques des territoires de la Caraïbe, l’analyse du lien entre migration et fait colonial nécessite de s’interroger sur l’influence de ces derniers sur la temporalité, l’ampleur, la composition et la spatialisation des mouvements de populations.
The making of Caribbean societies is indissociable from long-term migration movements. The favourable politico-legal framework of Caribbean migrations towards their metropoles accounts for the strength of migration streams from politically dependent territories in the region. It also accounts for their spatial configuration as ‘migratory couples’. The issue is different as far as independent territories are concerned. The analysis of three Caribbean populations – Puerto Ricans, French West Indians, Haitians – questions the particularity of the politico-institutional contexts of source societies in relation with the singular modalities of their colonization. Given the remarkable diversity of political statuses in the Caribbean, the analysis of the relation between migration and the colonial history requires to question the influence of these statuses on the temporality, the scale, the composition and the spatialization of population movements.

Résumé : A partir de l'étude de trois oeuvres de Daniel Maximin, Patrick Chamoiseau et Raphaël Confiant), il s'agit de s'interroger sur les rapports entre histoire et écriture. En l'occurence, les procédures de mise en texte du chronotope algérien, si elles répondent à des logiques (poétiques, critiques) et à des sensibilités différentes renvoient bien à une même problématique, celle de l'identité antillaise. Par contraste, le "Détour" par l'Algérie de la guerre d'indépendance ou des années 70 permet aux trois romancier de préciser le sens du Discours antillais (Glissant) et de dessiner les contours d'un imaginaire fertile et souvent douloureux.
Through a close reading of three works by Daniel Maximin, Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphaël Confiant, we intend to examine the relationships between history and writing. With different logics and sensibilities, the texts under study implies a common issue : West Indian identity. In contrast with the caribbean situation, the "Detour" through Algeria of Independance war and of the 70' allows the three writers to specify the meaning of the "West Indian discourse" (Glissant) and to draw the outlines of a rich and often painful imaginary.
