Tower Isle Hotel was originally built in 1949, by founder Abraham ‘Abe’ Issa, as the first year-round resort on the Central North coast of Jamaica. Eventually, Issa earned the nicknamed “Mr. Jamaica” and later became the first chairman of the Jamaica Tourist Board. Tower Isle was later renamed Couples Tower Isle. The hotel, pictured, is surrounded by palms and is built near the shoreline. Tourists can be seen on the beach while boats are anchored in the ocean. Slide labeled Tower Isle.

The town of Bath is located in the John Crow Mountains in Saint Thomas, Jamaica. Mineral springs flow from the rocks and are piped into the bath house, pictured, where the cold and hot waters of the springs are mixed together. The water’s high mineral (sulfur and lime) content is believed to have medicinal properties. The bath has been officially known as the Bath of the Saint Thomas the Apostle. Bath Fountain Hotel and Spa is run by the Jamaican Ministry of Tourism. In front of the building are many automobiles including a taxi. Description : Volcano tourism plays an important role in the economies of volcanic islands in the Lesser Antilles. On islands like St. Lucia and Dominica these volcanoes have been utilized as geoparks and the areas even being designated as World Heritage Sites. In many of these islands, farming communities also live on the slopes to these volcanoes and with the increased pursuit of geothermal energy the siting of geothermal operations are also located in close proximity. Volcanic activity, therefore, has a significant impact on these islands at a local and national level. Many volcanomonitoring institutions face the financial and human resources challenge of providing ongoing monitoring services to economically burdened small island states. This has often led to the exploration of alternative low-cost monitoring options and strategies to be adopted by monitoring agencies. One such strategy is the adoption of a volcanic risk reduction approach to research and monitoring activities, which integrates the social and physical sciences through the engagement of local communities as partners with scientists in disaster risk reduction. We present a recent approach adopted using this type of strategy in St. Lucia and lessons learnt from this approach with implications for volcano tourism on island. The potential use of this strategy in Dominica is also presented, given the economic challenges the island currently faces during its ongoing recovery efforts from Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Résumé : Beach sediment cementation (beachrock formation) is a sedimentary process that can transform significant sections of beaches into rock outcrops. This contribution reports the results of two questionnaire surveys (one focusing on foreign tourists and the other on local people) carried out in coastal resorts of the island of Lesbos (Greece), on the perceptions of beach users regarding the impacts of beachrocks on their recreational activities. The survey focusing on foreign tourists showed that the majority of the interviewees took notice of the formations and commented negatively on them. Although most of the interviewees did not consider beachrocks a significant safety risk, a considerable proportion of the sample stated that beachrocks influenced their beach ratings that they would prefer beachrock-free beaches and would be willing to contribute financially to preventative and protective measures. In contrast, the results of the survey focusing on local people, who are more familiar with the phenomenon, showed a high perception of beachrock-related risks and limited beachrock tolerance. In addition to the safety risks that the irregular, slippery, beachrock surfaces may pose to beach users, beachrocks may also degrade beach aesthetics. promote beach sediment erosion and decrease the beach carrying capacity. As beachrocks are a common attribute of tropical, subtropical and low-temperate beaches that are typically associated with major tourist destinations, and are likely to spread under global warming conditions, they may be considered as a significant threat to the coastal tourist industry.
