Résumé : In Martinique in the eighteenth century, the "free people of color", both those free by birth and freedmen, black or mixed race, form a legal category, which was distinct from those of whites and slaves. Comparative studies with Spanish or English territories show that no legal regulation formalized a shift - from the category of free colored people to that of White - in the French colonies between the late seventeenth century and the French Revolution. Also, this thesis proposes to show the informal process that enabled some people - the "assimilated" - to cross the color barrier. I analysed the color prejudice, a racist system, whose ideology, supported by local regulations, legitimized the collective construction of a public and social order. In a second step, I examined the development of the color bar. The free colored people were the first to bear the brunt of the impermeability of the demarcation line and of the problems posed by the purity of blood; but some whites, through interracial unions, and Native Americans have also been targeted. Finally I thought about what made the whiteness, and the strategies to achieve whiteness, change in status. Notarial acts and 33,000 acts of parish registers treaties led to the reconstitution of genealogies, in order to examine individuals and families over generations; I observed the importance of the phenotype, whitening, legitimacy relations, privileged partners, choice of networks, wealth levels and the use of space.
À la Martinique au XVIIIe siècle, les « libres de couleur », qu’ils soient nés libres ou affranchis, noirs ou métis, forment une catégorie juridique distincte des Blancs et des esclaves. L’étude comparée, avec les territoires espagnols ou anglais, montre qu’aucune réglementation légale n’a officialisé un passage de la catégorie Libre de couleur à celle de Blanc dans les colonies françaises de la fin du XVIIe siècle à la Révolution française. Aussi, cette thèse se propose de montrer les processus officieux qui ont permis à certaines personnes – les « assimilés » – de franchir la barrière de couleur. Une réflexion a été menée sur le préjugé de couleur, système raciste dont l’idéologie, soutenue par la réglementation locale, a légitimé la construction collective d’un ordre public et social. Puis, on a examiné l’élaboration de la barrière de couleur. Les libres de couleur ont été les premiers à faire les frais de l’imperméabilisation de la ligne de démarcation et des problèmes posés par la pureté de sang ; mais les Blancs mésalliés, dans le cadre d’unions interraciales, et les Amérindiens ont aussi été visés. Enfin nous avons réfléchi à ce qui faisait la blancheur et aux stratégies adoptées pour réussir ce changement de statut. Le notariat et les 33 000 actes des registres paroissiaux traités ont donné lieu à la reconstitution de généalogies pour examiner des individus et des familles sur plusieurs générations ; on a ainsi observé l’importance du phénotype, le blanchiment, la légitimité des relations, les conjoints privilégiés, le choix des réseaux, les niveaux de fortune et l’usage de l’espace.

Diana Paton is Reader in Caribbean History at the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University. She is the author of No Bond but the Law: Punishment, Race, and Gender in Jamaican State Formation, 1780-1870 (Durham: Duke University Press, 2004), and co-editor, with Pamela Scully, of Gender and Slave Emancipation in the Atlantic World (Durham: Duke University Press 2005). For her publications on obeah and Caribbean religion, please see the publications page. Gemma Romain specialises in researching Caribbean and Black British history. She currently works as a Research Associate for The Equiano Centre, Department of Geography, UCL and also undertakes freelance historical research and public engagement. She was Vera Douie Fellow at the Women’s Library during 2011, documenting interwar Black histories within the collections of the Women’s Library and was previously Leverhulme Early Career fellowship at Newcastle University. Her publications include Connecting Histories: A Comparative Exploration of African-Caribbean and Jewish History and Memory in Modern Britain (Kegan Paul, 2006) and co-edited with David Cesarani, Jews and Ports Cities, 1590-1990: Commerce, Community and Cosmopolitanism (Vallentine Mitchell, 2006). Gemma wrote the initial drafts of most of the text on the website. Maarit Forde worked with Diana on an earlier phase of this project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust. She researched obeah prosecutions and prosecutions under the Shouters Prohibition Ordinance in the Port of Spain Gazette, co-organized the conference that led to the publication of Obeah and Other Powers, and co-edited the book. Previous research on this project has also been funded by Newcastle University and the British Academy.

Vehicles and children on Bamboo Avenue in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica. Bamboo Avenue, also known as “Bamboo Walk,” is a highway approximately 2.5 miles long planted with bamboos forming an arched canopy over the road. It is also known as Holland Bamboo because it was planted by the owners of Holland sugar estate and dates back to the mid 1700s. The purpose of the grove was to provide shade for plantation slaves and owners of the estate while on their way to the town of Lacovia. Slide labeled Jam. bamboo.

The host-parasite genera Proformica-Rossomyrmex present four pairs of species with a very wide range of distribution from China to Southeastern Spain, from huge extended plains to the top of high mountains. Here we review (1) the published data on these pairs in comparison to other slave-makers; (2) the different dispersal ability in hosts and parasites inferred from genetics (chance of migration conditions the evolutionary potential of the species); (3) the evolutionary potential of host and parasite determining the coevolutionary process in each host-parasite system that we treat to define using cuticular chemical data. We find a lower evolutionary potential in parasites than in hosts in fragmented populations, where selective pressures give advantage to a limited female parasite migration due to uncertainty of locating a host nest. A similar evolutionary potential is detected for hosts and parasites when the finding of host nests is likely (i.e., in continuous and extended populations). Moreover, some level of local adaptation at CHC profiles between host and parasite exists independently of the kind of geographic distribution and the ability of dispersal of the different populations. Similarity at CHC profiles appears to be a trait imposed by natural selection for the interaction between hosts and slave-makers.

Résumé : The social change which takes place in the French West Indies after the Second World War ensues from a historical interactive process. It occurs between 1946 and 1961, within the frame of the new dynamic fostered in the aftermath of the war. Here we refer to the new political status of Department, the outbreak of social conflicts during the process of decolonization, the public policies and the planning of “the economic and social development” of the overseas departments. The dynamic also includes the population growth with the birth of a new generation- from the sociological point of view. The aforementioned interaction instils the new type of society emerging in the French West Indies since the 1960’s, without drastically changing their colonial social structure. This transformation named “Departmentalization” seems paradoxical because it will generate “modern” social frustrations, while maintaining existing frustrations that stemmed from the plantation society. This process led to the transition from a slave society to a consumer society. It allows us to understand the persistence of a latent social unrest in these departments, in spite of the overall significant improvement of the living conditions during the early twentieth century.
La transformation sociale des Antilles françaises qui se produit après la Seconde Guerre mondiale résulte d’un processus interactif historique. Celui-ci se produit entre 1946 et 1961 autour des nouvelles dynamiques de l’après-guerre. Il s’agit du statut départemental, de la décolonisation avec l’explosion des conflits sociaux, de la politique publique de « développement économique et social » avec la planification dans les départements d’outre-mer, et de l’accroissement démographique avec l’apparition d’une nouvelle génération « sociologique ». C’est précisément cette interaction qui est à l’origine du nouveau type de société qui émerge aux Antilles à partir des années 1960 sans pour autant que leur structure sociale coloniale ne soit bouleversée. Cette construction qui prend le nom commun de « Départementalisation » est paradoxale car elle va générer des frustrations sociales « modernes », tout en maintenant des frustrations anciennes issues de la société de plantation. En induisant ainsi le passage d’un monde d’ « habitation » à un monde de consommation, cette construction permet de comprendre un peu mieux, le maintien, au début du XXIe siècle, d’un malaise social latent dans ces départements en dépit d’une amélioration sensible et générale des conditions de vie.

Résumé : En mettant côte à côte les modèles de construction des habitations sucrières caribéennes et des cités ouvrières métropolitaines, on constate de troublantes similitudes entre ces deux systèmes sociospatiaux. Chacun des modèles correspond à un stade différencié de l’expansion du capitalisme industriel : l’hypothèse défendue ici consiste à montrer que le discours hygiéniste serait venu occulter le recouvrement de ces deux modèles de logement patronaux, parce que le premier était largement entaché par la « question esclavagiste » dont l’industrialisme métropolitain, incarné dans le second, souhaitait se débarrasser. Et l’occultation de cette part d’héritage dans la mémoire du modèle des cités ouvrières pourrait s’expliquer par la cécité dont a longtemps été saisie la société française quant à son passé esclavagiste puis colonial. Ce lien entre les deux modèles sociospatiaux ne semble d’ailleurs faire l’objet d’aucune construction patrimoniale, dans le monde industrialisé comme dans la Caraïbe, alors même que chaque modèle pris isolément tendrait à se patrimonialiser.
When the building models of living quarters on Caribbean sugar plantations are compared to workers’ housing estates in Metropolitan France, we find unsettling similarities between the two socio-spatial systems. The models each correspond to a different stage in the spread of industrial capitalism: the hypothesis advanced here argues that “hygienist” discourse could have worked to obscure the overlap between these two models of company-owned housing since the former was sullied by the “slavery issue” from which Metropolitan industrialism, embodied by the latter, wanted to distance itself. The omission of this aspect of its heritage from the memory of the workers’ housing estate model may be explained by French society’s long-standing refusal to acknowledge its slavery-based and then colonial past. The connection between these two socio-spatial models does not appear to be of interest in the heritage-making process in either the industrialised world or the Caribbean despite the fact that each model on its own is beginning to be recognised as part of the local heritage.

By 1755, the Good Hope Estate was formed through a land grant, given to Colonel Thomas Williams, who built the first great house on the site, which was a sugar estate. In 1767, the property and surrounding estates was purchased by John Tharp, then the largest land and slave owner in Jamaica. The plantation is close to the Martha Brae River and the Cockpit Mountains. The estate became a hotel in 1912 after it was purchased by an American banker. In the foreground of the picture, a citrus grove behind a wire fence. Slide labeled Hope Plantation.
