Résumé : Since its appearance at the beginning of the 2000’s, the Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation, known as REDD+, has gradually been admitted as an indispensable option for global policies aiming at tackling climate change. Relying on the concept of « avoided deforestation », it requires the formulation of a reference scenario aiming at evaluating efforts made by the countries involved in controlling their level of deforestation. Those scenarios are facing numerous political and scientific debates. This thesis aims at putting into perspective the principles of REDD+, based on a study site covering the Guiana Shield. In a first step, the formulation of a spatialiazed deforestation model over French Guiana will be presented, insisting on the necessity to focus on socio-economic drivers of deforestation. This statement will be reinforced, in a second step, by the the study of deforestation due to gold mining in the Guiana Shield, showing a very strong effect of gold prices and national political contexts on deforestation. These results finally contribute to a critical discussion on REDD+ mechanism, based on the formulation of very variable reference scenarios, relying more on political than on scientific determinants, and potentially enabling the emergence of environmental blackmailing.
Depuis ses balbutiements au début des années 2000, la Réduction des Emissions liées à la Déforestation et la Dégradation forestière, plus connue sous le sigle REDD+, a peu à peu été admise comme un moyen indispensable des politiques globales de lutte contre le changement climatique. Reposant sur le concept de « déforestation évitée », elle nécessite la formulation d’un scénario de référence servant à évaluer les efforts des pays dans la maîtrise de leur niveau de déforestation. Ces scénarios sont au cœur de nombreux débats politiques et scientifiques. Cette thèse constitue une mise en perspective des principes de REDD+ avec, comme cas d’étude, le Plateau des Guyanes. Dans un premier temps, on présentera l’établissement d’un modèle spatialisé de déforestation pour la Guyane française, insistant sur la nécessité de se focaliser sur les moteurs socio-économiques de la déforestation. Ce constat sera renforcé, dans un second temps, par l’étude de la déforestation liée à l’orpaillage à l’échelle de l’ensemble du Plateau des Guyanes, montrant un impact très fort du cours de l’or et des contextes politiques sur le niveau déforestation. Ces résultats alimenteront une discussion critique du mécanisme REDD+, basé sur la formulation de scénarios de référence potentiellement très variables et fondés sur des déterminants davantage politiques que scientifiques, ouvrant ainsi la porte à un potentiel chantage environnemental.

We propose to study fragmentability of set-valued mappings not only for a given single mapping, but also for a sequence of mappings associated with the initial one. It turns out that this property underlies several variational principles, such as for example the Deville-Godefroy-Zizler variational principle and the Stegall variational principle, by providing a common path for proof.

Résumé : The mechanical equilibrium of an orogenic wedge is maintained thanks to interactions between tectonic processes and surface processes. To better constrain the influence of erosion and sedimentation on the evolution of orogens, we performed a series of analogue models based on the tapered wedge principle, varying the amounts of erosion and sedimentation. The models develop by frontal accretion in the foreland basin and by simple underthrusting and subsequent underplating in the hinterland. The variations in rates of erosion and sedimentation strongly modify the extent, the morphology, the structures, the timing of development and the material paths in the different models. Under certain conditions, entire structural units can be formed and subsequently eroded out of the geological record, leading to important underestimations when restoring sections. Particles located in the converging lower-plate or in the upper-plate show complex uplift paths related to tectonic stages. The correlation between models and three Alpine tectonic cross-sections emphasizes the role of erosion and sedimentation on the dynamics and development of the orogen and adjacent Molasse basin. Along strike changes in the present structure of the orogen could be explained in part by differences in surface processes.

IntroductionLeishmania RNA virus type 1 (LRV1) is an endosymbiont of some Leishmania (Vianna) species in South America. Presence of LRV1 in parasites exacerbates disease severity in animal models and humans, related to a disproportioned innate immune response, and is correlated with drug treatment failures in humans. Although the virus was identified decades ago, its genomic diversity has been overlooked until now.Methodology/Principles findingsWe subjected LRV1 strains from 19 L. (V.) guyanensis and one L. (V.) braziliensis isolates obtained from cutaneous leishmaniasis samples identified throughout French Guiana with next-generation sequencing and de novo sequence assembly. We generated and analyzed 24 unique LRV1 sequences over their full-length coding regions. Multiple alignment of these new sequences revealed variability (0.5%±23.5%) across the entire sequence except for highly conserved motifs within the 5' untranslated region. Phylogenetic analyses showed that viral genomes of L. (V.) guyanensis grouped into five distinct clusters. They further showed a species-dependent clustering between viral genomes of L. (V.) guyanensis and L. (V.) braziliensis, confirming a long-term co-evolutionary history. Noteworthy, we identified cases of multiple LRV1 infections in three of the 20 Leishmania isolates.Conclusions/SignificanceHere, we present the first-ever estimate of LRV1 genomic diversity that exists in Leishmania (V.) guyanensis parasites. Genetic characterization and phylogenetic analyses of these viruses has shed light on their evolutionary relationships. To our knowledge, this study is also the first to report cases of multiple LRV1 infections in some parasites. Finally, this work has made it possible to develop molecular tools for adequate identification and genotyping of LRV1 strains for diagnostic purposes. Given the suspected worsening role of LRV1 infection in the pathogenesis of human leishmaniasis, these data have a major impact from a clinical viewpoint and for the management of Leishmania-infected patients.

We define an abstract notion of subdifferential operator and an associated notion of smoothness of a norm covering all the standard situations. In particular, a norm is smooth for the Gâteaux (Fréchet, Hadamard, Lipschitz-smooth) subdifferential if it is Gâteaux (Fréchet, Hadamard, Lipschitz) smooth in the classical sense, while on the other hand any norm is smooth for the Clarke-Rockafellar subdifferential. We then show that lower semicontinuous functions on a Banach space satisfy an Approximate Mean Value Inequality with respect to any subdifferential for which the norm is smooth, thus providing a new insight on the connection between the smoothness of norms and the subdifferentiability properties of functions. The proof relies on an adaptation of the ''smooth'' variational principle of Borwein-Preiss. Along the same vein, we derive subdifferential criteria for coercivity, Lipschitz behavior, cone-monotonicity, quasiconvexity, and convexity of lower semicontinuous functions which clarify, unify and extend many existing results for specific subdifferentials.

We establish a general Fermat rule for the problem of minimizing a lower semicontinuous function on a convex subset of a Banach space. Our basic tool is a constrained variational principle derived from the "smooth" variational principle of Borwein and Preiss. Specializing the Fermat rule to the case when the convex set is a "drop," we obtain a multidirectional Rolle-type inequality from which, in turn, we deduce a multidirectional mean value inequality, in the line of Clarke and Ledyaev. We follow the abstract approach of our previous paper [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 347 (1995), pp. 4147-4161], thus covering all standard situations met in applications, while stressing the links between the results and the few key properties that are needed.

Résumé : Given the technological development of embedded satellite sensors, the potential of available satellite images increases so that the question now arises of their most efficient exploitation possible. This is the purpose of the CARTAM-SAT project to fluidize the processing workflow from satellite images to users. The thesis is part of this framework.Processing operations relating to images have evolved over the years. Low-resolution images were processed by a so-called pixel approach while the high-resolution has allowed the development of a so-called object approach. The latter focuses on analysing not about the isolated pixels, but about groups of pixels representative of concrete objects on the ground. Thus, in principle, these are groups of pixels with a domain-specific remote sensing semantics.Along with satellite imagery, knowledge representation has evolved. The standards of representation have benefited from the expansion of the web to give rise to standards like OWL. This one is widely based on description logics that allow the use of automated reasoners able to infer implicit knowledge.This thesis is at the junction of these two sciences and provides an ontological approach for analysing satellite images. The aim is to formalize different types of knowledges and conceptualizations implicitly used by image processing programs and by remote sensing experts, and then reasoning automatically on an image description to obtain one semantic interpretation.This general principle may have numerous technical variations. The implementation consisted in a prototype combining a satellite image analysis library and an ontology-based reasoner. The implementation proposed in the thesis allows to explore four technical variations of the principle that lead to discussions on the complementarity of pixel and object analysis paradigms, the representation of some of the spatial relations and the role of knowledge in relation to processing.
Étant donnée l'évolution technologique des capteurs embarqués à bord des satellites, le potentiel d'images satellitaires accessible s'accroît de telle manière que se pose maintenant la question de son exploitation la plus efficace possible. C'est l'objectif du projet CARTAM-SAT que de fluidifier la chaîne de traitement depuis les satellites jusqu'aux utilisateurs des images. La thèse s'inscrit dans ce cadre. Les traitements relatifs aux images ont évolué au cours des années. Les images basse résolution étaient traitées par une approche dite pixel alors que la haute résolution a permis le développement d'une approche dite objet. Cette dernière s'attache à analyser non plus des pixels isolés, mais des groupes de pixels représentatifs d'objets concrets sur le terrain. Ainsi, en principe, ces groupes de pixels sont dotés d'une sémantique propre au domaine de la télédétection. La représentation des connaissances a évolué parallèlement aux images satellitaires. Les standards de représentation ont profité de l'expansion du web pour donner naissance à des standards comme OWL. Celui-ci repose en grande partie sur les logiques de description qui permettent l'utilisation de raisonneurs automatiques capables d'inférer une connaissance implicite.Cette thèse se place à la jonction de ces deux sciences et propose une approche ontologique d'analyse des images satellitaires. Il s'agit de formaliser différents types de connaissances et de conceptualisations implicitement utilisés par les logiciels de traitement d'image et par les experts en télédétection, puis de raisonner automatiquement sur la description d'une image pour en obtenir une interprétation sémantique.Ce principe général est susceptible de nombreuses déclinaisons techniques. La mise en œuvre a consisté en la réalisation d'un prototype alliant une bibliothèque d'analyse d'images satellitaires et un raisonneur basé sur les ontologies. L'implémentation proposée dans la thèse permet d'explorer quatre déclinaisons techniques du principe qui mènent à des discussions sur la complémentarité des paradigmes d'analyse pixel et objet, la représentation de certaines relations spatiales et la place de la connaissance par rapport aux traitements.
