Description : The Chemical Purification, analysis and Screening core laboratories (CPAS) are located at the University of South Florida campus in Tampa. This core offers instrumentation and expertise in fractionation, purification, and various chemical analyses to support synthetic and natural products drug discovery research groups. Our main equipment are dedicated to chromatographic separation and purification (MPLC, HPLC) and mass-spectrometry for analytic detection, quantification and identification (LC-MS SQ, QqQ and QToF). The CPAS services also include Circular Dichroism spectrometry, general spectroscopic characterization (UV, FTIR), lyophilization (bench top and high capacity freeze-dryers), synthesis (microwave reactor), ADME screening (permeability and drug solubility testing), and high-throughput screening development capability (automated liquid handler and multimode plate reader). An example of three significant studies will be presented at the conference to illustrate the CPAS core facility services: 1) Identification of new bioactive compounds from mangrove endophytic fungi as potential alternatives to malaria drug resistance, 2) Myricanol isolated from Bayberry (Myrica Cerifera) and its synthetic derivatives targeting the microtubuleassociated protein tau accumulation in the Alzheimer's disease and 3) New ent-labdane diterpenes with solid tumor cell lines antiproliferative properties from the endemic plant Eupatorium obtusissmum from the island of Hispaniola. The core provides research lab training workshops in advanced technology and assistance so users can operate any instruments available in the laboratories to successfully accomplish their analyses and research projects.

Résumé : The Tobacco sorter sorts tobacco leaves according to color and condition for use as cigar wrappers or binders: Selects leaves without obvious defects from bundle and lays them on booker bench (curved-top stand over which leaves are draped). Examines leaves for color variations, tears, tar spots, tight grain, and size under specifications. Places leaves not suitable for wrapper in separate pile. Folds wrapper leaves into bundles for stripping.

The construction of the House of Assembly in Spanish Town, Saint Catherine was completed by 1762. This red-brick, two-story building was the official meeting place for the Jamaican government until 1872, when Kingston took became the capital of Jamaica. As of 2013, the structure has been used as the offices for the Saint Catherine Parish Council. On August 1, 1838 Jamaica marked the day all slaves were made free. In Celebration of Emancipation, the Proclamation of Freedom was read aloud by Governor Sir Lionel Smith from the steps of King's House to the assembled masses in the square of Spanish Town, the then capital of Jamaica. Emancipation Day was made an official public holiday in 1893. In the foreground of the image is Emancipation Square, a small park bordered by a shrub with variegated leaves and surrounded by a wrought iron gate. The interior of the park has been planted with palm trees, has benches, a flag pole, and a small fountain. Slide labeled Jam. at Spanish Town.

The British Colonial Hotel, now the British Colonial Hilton Hotel, is located on the site of Fort Nassau which was demolished in 1837. By 1900, Henry Flagler had built the original Colonial Hotel, the only beachfront hotel in Nassau, which was destroyed by fire. A Mediterranean-style replica opened in 1922. The hotel offers views of Nassau Harbor and was the location for two James Bond movies. The area pictured is now known as the Shaw Park Botanical Gardens and Waterfall. The hotel has been relocated to the beach. The garden and lawns have been planted with many flowering plants. The study of wave attenuation in partially saturated porous rocks over a broad frequency range provides valuable information about the fluid system of reservoirs, which are inherently multiple phase fluid system. Until now, not much laboratory data have been collected in the seismically relevant low frequency range and existing literature data on partially saturated rock are very limited. The main goal of our work is to experimentally measure the bulk seismic attenuation on fluid-bearing rocks, using natural rock samples in an efficient way at in situ conditions. We are currently fine-tuning our attenuation measurement prototype. Preliminary bench-top results are promising and show consistency with reported experimental data with dry, partially and fully fluid saturated rocks. Measurements with the machine are accurate and precise.

Résumé : In order to minimize CO2 atmospheric concentration, a solution consists in sequestrating CO2 in geological reservoirs. To estimate long term risks, it is necessary to quantify the couplings between reaction processes as well as structural and hydrodynamical modifications. We realised two experimental benches enabling injecting CO2-enriched-brine in conditions corresponding to in situ storage (T < 200 oC and P < 200 bar) and developed
an experimental protocol using X-Ray microtomography and fluid and rock analyses in order to measure the variations of physical and chemical parameters.
The study of carbonated reservoirs near the injection well, allows quantifying different k-phi relationships depending on the dissolution processes and triggered by the local fluid chemical composition and initials conditions. Away from the injection well, we observe carbonate precipitation decreasing the permeability. The study of fracturated caprock samples shows that alternative percolation of CO2-enriched-brine and CO2 gas increases the fracture permeability.
The study of silicated rocks indicates carbonate precipitation in zeolite sandstone and sintered dunite grains. Nevertheless, in zeolite sandstone we also observe the precipitation of clay particles located in the uid pathways which decrease strongly the permeability.
Afin de minimiser la concentration en CO2 dans l'atmosphère une solution consiste à le séquestrer dans les réservoirs géologiques. Pour évaluer les risques à long terme, il est nécessaire de quantifier les couplages entre les processus réactionnels et les modifications structurales et hydrodynamiques. Dans cette optique, nous avons construit deux dispositifs expérimentaux permettant d'injecter des saumures chargées en CO2 dans les conditions de stockage (T < 200 °C et P < 200 bar) et mis en oeuvre un protocole expérimental utilisant la microtomographie RX et l'analyse des roches et des fuides pour quantifier les variations des paramètres physiques et chimiques. Dans le cas des réservoirs carbonatés, on observe, près du puits d'injection, une forte variabilité des relations k-phi en fonction du régime de dissolution contrôlé par la chimie locale du fluide, ainsi que par les conditions initiales. A plus grande distance, on observe des processus de précipitation diminuant fortement la perméabilité. L'étude des roches de couverture fracturées (argilite) a montré qu'une percolation alternée d'une saumure chargée en CO2 et de CO2 gaz augmentait la perméabilité de fracture. Dans le cas des roches silicatées, la précipitation de carbonates est mise en évidence aussi bien dans les grès à zéolites que dans les frittés de dunite de San Carlos. Cependant, dans les grès à zéolites, la précipitation d'une phase argileuse est observée dans les chemins d'écoulement et engendre une forte diminution de la perméabilité.

Résumé : We present new high-resolution bathymetry and backscatter data acquired in 2006 with the ROV Victor 6000 over the Lucky Strike hydrothermal field, Mid-Atlantic Ridge. As long-term monitoring of the Lucky Strike area (MoMAR project) is being implemented, these new high-resolution data offer an unprecedented view of the distribution of hydrothermal edifices, eruptive facies, and small-scale tectonic features in the Lucky Strike vent field. We show that vents located in the NW and NE correspond with wide expanses of lumpy seafloor which we interpret as primarily made of broken chimneys and sulfide edifices. They are found above scarps with relief > 50 m or on associated mass wasting deposits. By contrast, the SE and SW vents correspond with small expanses of lumpy seafloor and are located near smaller scarps which we interpret as more recent faults. Hydrothermal edifices in the SW venting area appear very recent, postdating the emplacement and faulting of the most recent lava. We propose that this difference in the age of hydrothermal edifices does not mean that hydrothermal venting itself is more recent in the southern part of the Lucky Strike field because preexisting sulfide deposits there may have been buried by recent volcanic deposits. Instead, the older edifices in the northern part of the hydrothermal field may have been allowed more time to grow because they are set above the level of recent lava flows. The formation of a lava lake is the most recent eruptive event detected at Lucky Strike. Lava drainback is evidenced by benches and lava pillars, suggesting a close connection with an underlying magma reservoir, which probably corresponds to the melt body imaged by Singh et al. (2006). We have found no evidence that this lake was active for months to decades, as lava lakes at terrestrial volcanoes. It may instead have formed as a lava pond, with successive lava flows covering the eruptive vents, as proposed for similar features at the EPR. The horizontal surface of the lake is deformed only near its southwestern shore, along a NNE-trending set of faults and fissures, which appear to control the distribution of hydrothermal chimneys.
