Fort Fincastle, completed in 1793, with its brick walls was built by the Royal Governor of the islands, Lord Dunmore (also known as Viscount Fincastle). This uniquely shaped fort has a triangular projection and rounded side which sits atop Bennet Hill. It is located near the top of the Queen's Staircase. Later, Fort Fincastle served as a lighthouse until 1816 and then was used as a signal tower. The Water Tower and cannons can be seen in the image.

This paper was part of the panel Panama Silver and the Making of Modern Literature, which introduced a collaborative, digital humanities course entitled “Panama Silver, Asian Gold: Migration, Money, and the Making of Modern Caribbean Literature,” and illuminated the significance of West Indians in Panama for the formation of Caribbean literature. The panelists designed and taught the course at Amherst College, the University of Florida, and the University of Miami. In the first paper in this panel, Rhonda Cobham-Sander articulated the overarching goal of the course; namely, that these two, closely related migrations were critical to the development of the Caribbean middle class, political nationalism, and national literatures. In the second paper, Leah Rosenberg outlined primary historical and literary sources on West Indians in Panama now available in the Digital Library of the Caribbean (www.dloc.com) and discussed how this supports collaboration in teaching and research. In the third paper, Margarita Vargas-Betancourt discussed the challenges of finding archival materials concerning West Indians in Panama in, U.S.-oriented archives (which we are using in the course). In the final paper, Donette Francis demonstrated the implications of positioning Panama Silver, the capital accumulated by West Indians, as critical to shaping modern Caribbean literature by reexamining Salkey’s understudied 1971 novel, The Late Emancipation of Jerry Stover.

In Trinidad and Tobago, carnival celebrations begin after Christmas and peak during the Monday and Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday. Costumed masqueraders and festival revelers partake in the two-day street parade, generally accompanied by soca, calypso, and steel pan music, before beginning the Lenten season. The National Museum and Art Gallery hosts a permanent ongoing exhibit of masks and costumes from past carnivals. This image shows the full view of two costumes. The partial view of two more costumes can be seen as well. One of the costumes is decorated with feathered props and fans. The costume also features geometric shapes and a stylized bird’s head, with the opening for the wearer at the base of the bird’s neck. A steel pan instrustment maker, is looking at the surface markings on a steel pan instrument. These markings will be used as outlines to divide the pan’s surface into convex sections to make its range of sound. Each section will be pounded into shape with a hammer. This particular steel pan is made from a used steel oil drum. The steel pan, a percussion instrument, originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is one of the country’s national emblems. Résumé : The channel-lobe transition zone has been studied in two turbiditic systems: the Amazon channel-mouth lobe complex at the termination of the last eight channel-levee systems and the Neochannel termination, the last active channel of the Petit-Rhone turbidite system. - In the two cases, the internal geometry and stacking pattern of the deposits show a significant control of the configuration (size and shape) of the receiving basins, their morphology (gradients and subtle gradient changes), and their degree of confinement. - The Amazon and Petit-Rhone systems, with lobes built after the Last Glacial Maximum and the ensuing sea-level rise, evidence the major impact of external forcings (climatic events and eustatic variations) that induce variations in sediment fluxes delivered to the deep basin and therefore exert a control on channel-mouth lobes construction. The channel-mouth lobes of the Amazon and Petit-Rhone systems, even if they are located at great distances from the river mouths, at the termination of the turbidite systems and in areas characterised by subtle morphological variations, are both constrained by combined internal (accommodation and compensation) and external factors (post-glacial deconnection between the fluvial system and the deep basin).
La zone de transition chenal-levées/lobes a été étudiée dans 2 systèmes turbiditiques : le complexe de lobes à la terminaison des 8 derniers chenaux de l'éventail de l'Amazone et la terminaison du Néochenal, dernier chenal de l'éventail du Petit-Rhône. - Dans les deux cas, l'agencement des dépôts et leur évolution dans l'espace et le temps révèlent un fort contrôle de la configuration des réceptacles (taille et forme), de la morphologie des fonds (pentes et taux de changement des pentes) et du degré de confinement. - Les systèmes de l'Amazone et du Petit-Rhône, dont les lobes se sont construits à partir du Dernier Maximum Glaciaire et lors de la remontée du niveau marin qui a suivi, ont en outre permis de souligner l'impact majeur, sur la mise en place des lobes terminaux, de certains forçages externes (événements climatiques et variations eustatiques), qui déterminent les variations des flux sédimentaires arrivant au bassin. Ainsi, bien que situés à des distances considérables des sources fluviatiles et dans des zones distales où les variations de relief sont très ténues, les lobes terminaux de ces deux grands systèmes turbiditiques se sont révélés contraints à la fois par des processus internes (processus de compensation) et par des processus externes (déconnexion post-glaciaire du fleuve et du bassin).

North Cat Cay was purchased in 1931 by Louis Wasey as a private island and is presently (2013) owned by members of the Cat Cay Yacht Club. This image shows a picture of the beach with two small structures: a white cylindrical building with a pyramid shaped roof and the view of the roof of another structure in the distance. Tall grasses and palm trees are growing on the shoreline. This image was featured in William Junior Bryant’s book “Flames of Life: A Pictorial Philosophy,” first published in 1961. This study reports petrostructural observations in the pargasite and phlogopite-bearing Finero peridotite massif (Italian Western Alps), which suggest that the pervasive foliation in this massif was formed by deformation concomitant with percolation of hydrous Si-rich melts: (1) diffuse contacts, but systematic parallelism between the pyroxenitic layers and the foliation of the peridotite (2) strong shape and crystal preferred orientations (SPO and CPO), but subhedral or interstitial shapes and weak intracrystalline deformation of the hydrous phases, (3) CPO, but interstitial shapes of the pyroxenes, (4) very coarse olivine grain sizes, which are correlated to the olivine abundance, and (5) elongated shapes, but weak intracrystalline deformation, and extremely weak and highly variable CPO of olivine. The pervasive deformation of the Finero peridotite occurred therefore under conditions that allowed coexistence of H2O–CO2-bearing melts, pargasite, and spinel, that is, temperatures of 980–1080 °C and pressures <2 GPa. The petrostructural observations suggest that the presence of hydrous melts results in accommodation of large amounts of deformation by stress-controlled dissolution–precipitation and advective transport of matter by the melts and in fast grain boundary migration in olivine. By consequence, it produces significant rheological weakening. Water contents in olivine are <4 ppm wt., implying limited contribution of hydration of olivine to weakening. In addition, the analysis of protomylonites composing the external domains of the shear zones that overprint the pervasive foliation indicates that the transition to melt-free conditions results in enhanced contribution of dislocation creep to the deformation. The associated increase of the peridotites' strength leads to onset of strain localization. The latter is not correlated to the local abundance in pargasite or phlogopite, implying that crystallization of amphiboles or phlogopite, even at concentrations of 25 vol.%, does not produce rheological weakening in the upper mantle.

Description : Limited work has focused on the nutritionally beneficial purple-fleshed sweetpotato in the Caribbean. Purple-fleshed sweetpotatoes are an excellent source of bioflavonoids and antioxidants. Cultivars of purple-fleshed sweetpotato are common in Asia but seldom grown in the west. These Asian cultivars set tuberous roots along the stem length where they root. The objective of this work was to introgress the purple-fleshed characteristic into highly productive early bearing (90-105 days) lines. The purple-fleshed line 'VIP' was used in reciprocal crosses with ?Bonita?, ?Liberty?, ?Mojave? and ?Ruddy?. From hand pollination of these hexaploid plants, 179 seedlings were obtained with a skin color ranging from white to deep burgundy. After the first field trial, 60 were selected for further evaluation based on early tuberous root shape and set, weevil tolerance and soluble sugar content. Continued evaluation will reduce selection down to 20 which further scrutiny to narrow selection to the top five. Steel pan music is most often associated with Trinidad and Tobago, where the art form originated, but the music is also popular in Barbados. Steel pans are made from oil drums that have had the drum head shaped with slopes and slants to make music note sounds. These drums have been painted blue and yellow to reflect the Barbados flag colors. This steel pan band includes a musician using shak-shaks (similar to maracas), which is a hollow rattle used in the Lesser Antilles. Cockspur Fine Rum box, pictured, has been produced in Barbados since 1884, when Danish seaman Valdemar Hanschell created the rum, which is distilled from fermented molasses. The cruise terminal, pictured, would contain departments to manage cruise passengers, such as Immigration and Customs. Slide labeled Barb 8.

Résumé : A standardized rapid inventory method providing information on both tree species diversity and aboveground carbon stocks in tropical forests will be an important tool for evaluating efforts to conserve biodiversity and to estimate the carbon emissions that result from deforestation and degradation (REDD). Herein, we contrast five common plot methods differing in shape, size, and effort requirements to estimate tree diversity and aboveground tree biomass (AGB). We simulated the methods across six Neotropical forest sites that represent a broad gradient in forest structure, tree species richness, and floristic composition, and we assessed the relative performance of methods by evaluating the bias and precision of their estimates of AGB and tree diversity. For a given sample of forest area, a several small' (<1ha) sampling strategy led to a smaller coefficient of variation (CV) in the estimate of AGB than a few large' one. The effort (person-days) required to achieve an accurate AGB estimate (<10% CV), however, was greater for the smallest plots (0.1ha) than for a compromise approach using 0.5ha modified Gentry plots, which proved to be the most efficient method to estimate AGB across all forest types. Gentry plots were also the most efficient at providing accurate estimates of tree diversity (<10% CV of Hill number). We recommend the use of the 0.5ha modified Gentry plot method in future rapid inventories, and we discuss a set of criteria that should inform any choice of inventory method.

Résumé : 69 new hydrothermal sites were discovered during the Naudur diving cruise. Dives were conducted between 17 degrees 5 and 18 degrees 40'5 on four segments showing marked contrast in morphology, volcanic, tectonic and hydrothermal activity. At 17 degrees 10'5, 17 degrees 25'5 and 18 degrees 37'5 the ridge has a dome shaped cross-section and is dominated by very active volcanic activity. Early widespread low temperature (<50 degrees C) diffuse hydrothermal discharge is followed by focused high temperature black smokers. At 18 degrees 15'S tectonic activity is dominant, no recent lava was observed, and only two of the 20 hydrothermal sites are active. At 18 degrees 32'5 recent lava representing a new volcanic episode partly covers the bottom of the graben. Deep hydrothermal convection is reactivated with new black smokers along the graben wall. Also, there is low temperature shimmering water from cooling lava flows. These three segments can be considered as successive volcanic/tectonic episodes typical of a fast spreading ridge. Further, the observations support a new model for the temporal evolution of episodic hydrothermal activity. Hydrothermal convection is unstable and superficial during the volcanic stage (dykes injection). At the beginning of the teaonic stage (graben formation) faults allow deep circulation and hot fluid to reach the surface. As the graben widens hydrothermal activity is less important and may cease. The heat of a new volcanic episode reactivates the deep hot water circulation along the graben faults completing a cycle.
69 nouveaux sites hydrothermaux ont été découverts entre 17'5 et 18'40'5 sur quatre segments présentant des activités volcaniques et tectoniques contrastées. A 17°10'S,17025'S et 18'37'5, la ride forme un dôme et l'activité volcanique est dominante. Les émissions hydrothermales sont d'abord diffuses et de basse température, puis focalisées et de haute température. A 18°15'S la majorité des sites hydrothermaux sont inactifs dans un graben axial dépourvu de laves récentes. A 18'32'5, des laves récentes s'épanchent au fond du graben. Les circuits hydrothermaux réactivés par le nouvel épisode volcanique se traduisent par des diffusions sur les laves récentes et par une reprise des émissions de haute température le long des murs du graben. Ces quatre segments traduisent des épisodes volcanoltectoniques successifs, caractéristiques de I'évolution temporelle des dorsales rapides. Les observations permettent de proposer un nouveau modèle de l'activité hydrothermale. Les circuits hydrothermaux sont diffus, peu structurés, instables et superficiels durant les épisodes volcaniques. Au début des épisodes tectoniques, les failles du graben drainent les fluides chauds en profondeur, puis lorsque le graben s'élargit, l'activité s'interrompt. La reprise de l'activité volcanique réamorce les circulations profondes le long des failles du graben.
