Description : This research will unveil the tensions between international, regional, and local interests which drove colonial officials and merchants on St. Thomas, St. Eustatius, Dutch St. Maarten, St. Bartholomew, and Saba to engage in illegal trade and logistical relations with privateers, pirates, and slave trading vessels between 1816-1840. Along with an analysis of eastern Caribbean trade networks through surviving shipping records, extensive government correspondence, court records, and accounts in historic newspapers from the region, this will subsequently permit insights into how the shifting bounds and tolerances of legal and illicit trade by colonial officials on these islands fostered a smuggling and laundering ring for ships, goods, and people engaged in privateering, piracy during the Latin American Wars of Independence and the later Cisplatine War, and the post-abolition slave trade. By understanding the processes involved in smuggling and laundering illegal prizes by privateers and pirates, direct evidence these activities can become visible in the archaeological record through a predictive model based upon local practices of intentionally sinking illegally captured ships.

Résumé : Drake led a British fleet that sailed to the Caribbean in 1585 and 1586. They captured, plundered, and released for ransom Santiago (Cape Verde Islands), Santo Domingo and Cartagena. They captured, sacked and burned St. Augustine, May 28-30, 1586, and then returned to England. An Italian artist living in London, Baptista Boazio, made engravings of the attacks. Boazio's 1588 view of St. Augustine is the first map of a city north of Mexico City. De Bry reproduced Boazio's maps in Part VIII of the Grand Voyages (Latin in 1599, German in 1600).

Morro Castle Spanish: Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro is a picturesque fortress guarding the entrance to Havana bay in Havana, Cuba. Juan Bautista Antonelli, an Italian engineer, was commissioned to design the structure. When it was built in 1589, Cuba was under the control of Spain. The castle, named after the biblical Magi, was later captured by the British in 1762.[

Here we show that trying to rob prey (cleptobiosis) from a highly specialized predatory ant species is risky. To capture prey, Allomerus decemarticulatus workers build gallery-shaped traps on the stems of their associated myrmecophyte, Hirtella physophora. We wondered whether the frequent presence of immobilized prey on the trap attracted flying cleptoparasites. Nine social wasp species nest in the H. physophora foliage; of the six species studied, only Angiopolybia pallens rob prey from Allomerus colonies. For those H. physophora not sheltering wasps, we noted cleptobiosis by stingless bees (Trigona), social wasps (A. pallens and five Agelaia species), assassin bugs (Reduviidae), and flies. A relationship between the size of the robbers and their rate of capture by ambushing Allomerus workers was established for social wasps; small wasps were easily captured, while the largest never were. Reduviids, which are slow to extract their rostrum from prey, were always captured, while Trigona and flies often escaped. The balance sheet for the ants was positive vis-à-vis the reduviids and four out of the six social wasp species. For the latter, wasps began by cutting up parts of the prey's abdomen and were captured (or abandoned the prey) before the entire abdomen was retrieved so that the total weight of the captured wasps exceeded that of the prey abdomens. For A. pallens, we show that the number of individuals captured during attempts at cleptobiosis increases with the size of the Allomerus' prey.

Résumé : Preliminary analysis of the impact of an environmental change on ichtyologic fauna marinates and fishing in Guyanese water enter within the framework of the program CHALOUPE (dynamic Change of the exploited marine biodiversity and the viability of the Fisheries) coordinated by Ifremer Cayenne and financed by the ANR (National Agency of Research). The study focuses on: -analysis temporal variations of various environmental parameters (sea surface temperature and salinity, the phenomenon El Niño) -fish physical characteristics (tolerances of temperature and salinity, maximum height, distribution…) - analysis of the unloadings per unit of effort of the inshore fishing and an economic analysis of the selling price of fish Data are found on data bases and are given by scientists. The statistical studies and the cartographic representations show that there is an increase in temperature of water in Guiana since the end of the Nineties. The model AquaMaps® simulates the potential consequences of this reheating on the fish distribution. Certain stocks of fishing are weakened. For the moment, if the composition of the captures of inshore fishing changes, that seems more due to a change of fishing strategy than due to an impact of the climatic change. In addition, the average value of the capture increased for reason commercial.
Les analyses de l’impact d’un changement environnemental sur la faune ichtyologique marine et la pêche dans les eaux guyanaises entrent dans le cadre du programme CHALOUPE (CHAngement gLObal, dynamiqUe de la biodiversité marine exploitée et de la viabilité des Pêcheries) coordonné par l’Ifremer Cayenne et financé par l’ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche). L’étude porte sur : -l’analyse des variations temporelles de différents paramètres environnementaux (température et salinité de surface des eaux, le phénomène El Niño) à l’échelle de quelques décennies -les caractéristiques physiques des poissons (tolérances de températures et de salinité (taille maximum, répartition…) ; -l’analyse des débarquements par unité d’effort de la pêche côtière depuis les années 70 ; -une analyse économique de la pêche ; Les données sont récoltées à partir de bases de données et au près de différents chercheurs. Les études statistiques et les représentations cartographiques démontrent qu’il y a bien une augmentation de température des eaux en Guyane depuis la fin des années 90. Le modèle statistique sous AquaMaps® permet de simuler les conséquences potentielles de ce réchauffement sur la répartition des poissons. Dans un tel contexte, certains stocks de pêche sont fragilisés. Pour le moment, si la composition des captures de la pêche côtière se modifie dans le même temps, cela semble plus du fait de changement de stratégie de pêche que du fait de l’impact du changement climatique. Par ailleurs, la valeur moyenne de la capture a augmenté pour des raisons commerciales.

Zelus annulosus is an assassin bug species mostly noted on Hirtella physophora, a myrmecophyte specifically associated with the ant Allomerus decemarticulatus known to build traps on host tree twigs to ambush insect preys. The Z. annulosus females lay egg clutches protected by a sticky substance. To avoid being trapped, the first three instars of nymphs remain grouped in a clutch beneath the leaves on which they hatched, yet from time to time, they climb onto the upper side to group ambush preys. Long-distance prey detection permits these bugs to capture flying or jumping insects that alight on their leaves. Like some other Zelus species, the sticky substance of the sundew setae on their forelegs aids in prey capture. Group ambushing permits early instars to capture insects that they then share or not depending on prey size and the hunger of the successful nymphs. Fourth and fifth instars, with greater needs, rather ambush solitarily on different host tree leaves, but attract siblings to share large preys. Communal feeding permits faster prey consumption, enabling small nymphs to return sooner to the shelter of their leaves. By improving the regularity of feeding for each nymph, it likely regulates nymphal development, synchronizing molting and subsequently limiting cannibalism.
