 | Overview of recent progress in fisheries acoustics made by Ifremer with examples from the Bay of Biscay Auteur(s) : Trenkel, Verena Berger, Laurent Bourguignon, Sebastien Doray, Mathieu Fablet, Ronan Masse, Jacques Mazauric, Valerie Poncelet, Cyrille Éditeur(s) : Edp Sciences S A Résumé : This paper provides an overview of the progress Ifremer has made recently in fisheries acoustics and the study of small pelagic fish by: i) pushing observation frontiers using a range of platforms including an autonomous underwater vehicle, AUV, ii) developing measuring instruments and methods and iii) studying fish distributions. Presently, information from several frequencies of single-beam echosounders is routinely collected together with data from the ME70 multibeam echosounder. For onboard data acquisition control the HERMES software was developed. The new MOVIES 3D software includes modules for simultaneous realistic 3D visualisation and post-processing such as bottom detection, school extraction and calculation of descriptors and integration of all acoustic data. Several data analysis methods are being developed and some initial results are presented. Finally, results on the spatial distribution of small pelagic fish schools in the Bay of Biscay illustrate the role that acoustics can play, and are already playing, in the implementation of an ecosystem approach to fisheries. Cet article présente une vue d’ensemble des avancées récentes de l’Ifremer en acoustique halieutique et une étude des petits poissons pélagiques tenant compte : i) de l’extension des limites de l’observation, en utilisant une gamme diverse de plates-formes dont un engin sous-marin autonome (AUV), ii) des développements méthodologiques et d’instruments de mesures, iii) de l’étude de la répartition des poissons. Désormais, les données de plusieurs fréquences des sondeurs mono-faisceaux sont collectées en routine en parallèle à celles du sondeur multifaisceau ME70. Le logiciel HERMES a été développé pour le contrôle de l’acquisition des données à bord. Le nouveau logiciel MOVIES 3D comprend des modules de visualisation réaliste en 3D et de post-traitement (dont la détection du fond, l’extraction de bancs et le calcul de leurs descripteurs ainsi que l’intégration de toutes les données acoustiques). Plusieurs méthodes d’analyse de données sont en cours de développement et quelques premiers résultats sont présentés. Enfin, les résultats relatifs à la répartition spatiale des bancs de petits poissons pélagiques dans le golfe de Gascogne illustrent le rôle actuel et potentiel de l’acoustique dans la mise en place d’une approche écosystémique des pêches. | | Innovation and operation with robotized underwater systems Auteur(s) : Rigaud, Vincent Éditeur(s) : Wiley InterScience Résumé : This paper reports on the status and design of the operational remotely operated vehicle Victor 6000, rated for 6000 m depth and of the 3000 m depth autonomous underwater vehicle Asterxx operated by Ifremer the French Institute for Sea Exploitation. Victor 6000 is part of a global system built of subsystems, scientific modules, winch and cable, dead weight and umbilical, positioning subsystem using acoustic ultra short base line (USBL) techniques, and software for data and dive management. In 2005 the system was equipped with a second toolsled dedicated to high resolution mapping of the sea bed, with both acoustical and optical devices. Asterxx, the first autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) developed by IFREMER, is 4.5 m in length with a diameter of 0.69 m. Depending on the payload, its weight is between 600 and 800 kg in air,with a diving depth of 3000 m. Its cruising speed is between 0.5 and 2.5 ms. The AUV is capable of carrying various payloads for a wide spectrum of applications. The vehicle can cruise up to 100 km. For coastal applications this vehicle is operable by a limited crew potentially from a nonspecialized vessel. Both vehicles are used for oceanography as well as to continually evolve underwater systems to address new scientific challenges. | | High-resolution mapping of large gas emitting mud volcanoes on the Egyptian continental margin (Nile Deep Sea Fan) by AUV surveys Auteur(s) : Dupre, Stephanie Buffet, G. Mascle, J. Marfia, Christian Éditeur(s) : Springer Résumé : Two highly active mud volcanoes located in 990-1,265 m water depths were mapped on the northern Egyptian continental slope during the BIONIL expedition of R/V Meteor in October 2006. High-resolution swath bathymetry and backscatter imagery were acquired with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV)-mounted multibeam echosounder, operating at a frequency of 200 kHz. Data allowed for the construction of similar to 1 m pixel bathymetry and backscatter maps. The newly produced maps provide details of the seabed morphology and texture, and insights into the formation of the two mud volcanoes. They also contain key indicators on the distribution of seepage and its tectonic control. The acquisition of high-resolution seafloor bathymetry and acoustic imagery maps with an AUV-mounted multibeam echosounder fills the gap in spatial scale between conventional multibeam data collected from a surface vessel and in situ video observations made from a manned submersible or a remotely operating vehicle. | | Rapport annuel 2004 Résumé : L'année 2004, année du vingtième anniversaire de sa création, aura été marquée, pour l'Ifremer, par une intense activité. 2004 a en effet été d'abord une année d'investissements et de résultats: de la biodiversité des massifs de coraux froids à la capacité des bactéries à produire des polymères biodégradables, de l'observation des effets de la crue centennale du Rhône sur les sédiments à la variabilité de l'hydrologie dans l'Atlantique Nord, de l'effet de la pluviométrie en hiver sur la mortalité estivale des huîtres à la sensibilisation environnementale des crevettes aux bactéries pathogènes, au lever par Lidar aéroporté de plus de 900 km² d'estrans de Bretagne, les résultats scientifiques ont été nombreux La technologie n'a pas été en reste avec les progrès de la protection contre la corrosion marine, les essais concluants de l'AUV, la mise à l'eau du Pourquoi pas?, ni les activités de surveillance du fait de l'augmentation des apparitions de toxines dans les coquillages. L'institut a en outre mené en 2004, avec ses ministères de tutelle, un important effort de réflexion sur ses missions et ses priorités, dont le contrat quadriennal 2005-2008, approuvéen conseil à' administration, finalisé en fin d'année et signé le 25 mai 2005 en présence de quatre ministres, trace désormais le cadre, en cohérence avec notre plan stratégique.
