INRA, CFCS Description : Banana and plantain (Musa spp) are important foreign exchange earners in Guyana and the Windward Islands of the Caribbean. Black Sigatoka Disease (BSD) also referred to as black leaf streak disease is one of the most destructive diseases of banana and plantain and is present within the region. In Guyana within two years following its introduction in 2008, the industry was totally decimated, recording a 100% decline, turning the country to a net banana importer. Also, from 2009 ? 2012 the disease spread in the Windward Islands causing as much as 100% decrease in the export of banana. The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus, Mycosphaerella fijiensis (anamorph Pseudocercospora fijiensis) and is aggressive, challenging to control and results in enormous crop damage if left uncontrolled. In an effort to develop an integrated management approach to the disease the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) with financial assistance from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) is evaluating five FHIA banana and plantain accessions and eight IITA plantain accessions for tolerance to BSD. The evaluation is presently conducted in four Caribbean countries, Dominica, Guyana, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines. In each country, four distinct agro- ecological zones were selected for the trial evaluation blocks and using a randomized block design, four blocks were established in each country. Five FHIA accessions: FHIA-01, FHIA-03, FHIA-18, FHIA-21 and FHIA-23 are being evaluated in Dominica, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines whereas, plantain accessions: PITA-17, PITA-21, PITA-22, PITA-23, PITA-24 and PITA-26 are to be evaluated in Guyana for tolerance to the disease. Cavendish are used as regional controls and as borders rows to increase disease pressure. The disease parameters evaluated are youngest leaf spotted (YLS), disease development time (DDT), leaf emission rate (LER), disease severity at 6 months, bunch emergence and harvest, and index of standing leaves. Agronomic data; days from planting to flowering, bunch weight, number of hands in bunch, average weight of hands and average number of fingers per hand and bunch, as well as organoleptic characteristics of both cooked and ripe fruits are also evaluated. The early data collection, of the FHIA only accessions, show trends in the disease tolerance and agronomic performance as well as their adaptability in the different agro-ecological zone. The trends indicate better disease tolerance of FHIA varieties with higher leaf counts before, at bunching and at harvest. The organoleptic test shows a preference to FHIA 03 and FHIA 21. La banane et le plantain (espèces de Musa) sont les acquéreurs de devises étrangères importants en Guyane et en Îles du Vent des Caraïbe. La maladie noire de Sigatoka (schéma) également désignée sous le nom de la maladie noire de filet de feuille est l'une des maladies les plus destructives de la banane et du plantain et est présente dans la région. INRA, CFCS Description : The Sargassum seaweed [Sargassum natans and S. fluitans] can be classed as a perennial invasive weed problem in all the Caribbean islands. It has been shown to affect fisher-folks, sea bathers, and tourists. It is proving to be costly to remove; in addition to its offensive odour which hampers the clean-up operations. The University of Trinidad and Tobago at the BAFT campus is engaged in series of activities to find suitable uses of the seaweed as animal feed, and as soil medium and ameliorant. This study aimed at evaluating the suitability of the seaweed as a growing media for the production of sweet peppers [Capsicum annuum var. annuum] using different percentage of the weed (0, 25, 50 and 100%) with soil under greenhouse conditions. The crop growth and development and yield were monitored. The results indicated that the plant height [Y pl ht = 16.6 + 0.3 DAT - 0.11 TRT] and leaf number [Y no.lvs = 0.90 + 1.04 DAT - 0.206 TRT] increased as age of the crop increased, but decreased with the increase in percentage of seaweed/ soil mixture. A similar response was observed for the flower buds and fruits numbers and percentage soil mixture. The medium had no effect on the crop transpiration and net photosynthesis rate [PN] , photosynthesis active radiation[PAR] , and stomatal conductance. A nutrient analysis of the medium was also conducted. But such a policy would require that would be allowed to raise customs to protect their domestic market : a change for a new status in E.U. law would be necessary, and these ultraperipherical regions would have to be changed into overseas countries and territories. This core offers instrumentation and expertise in fractionation, purification, and various chemical analyses to support synthetic and natural products drug discovery research groups. Our main equipment are dedicated to chromatographic separation and purification (MPLC, HPLC) and mass-spectrometry for analytic detection, quantification and identification (LC-MS SQ, QqQ and QToF). The CPAS services also include Circular Dichroism spectrometry, general spectroscopic characterization (UV, FTIR), lyophilization (bench top and high capacity freeze-dryers), synthesis (microwave reactor), ADME screening (permeability and drug solubility testing), and high-throughput screening development capability (automated liquid handler and multimode plate reader). An example of three significant studies will be presented at the conference to illustrate the CPAS core facility services: 1) Identification of new bioactive compounds from mangrove endophytic fungi as potential alternatives to malaria drug resistance, 2) Myricanol isolated from Bayberry (Myrica Cerifera) and its synthetic derivatives targeting the microtubuleassociated protein tau accumulation in the Alzheimer's disease and 3) New ent-labdane diterpenes with solid tumor cell lines antiproliferative properties from the endemic plant Eupatorium obtusissmum from the island of Hispaniola. The core provides research lab training workshops in advanced technology and assistance so users can operate any instruments available in the laboratories to successfully accomplish their analyses and research projects. Université des Antilles Description : Volcano tourism plays an important role in the economies of volcanic islands in the Lesser Antilles. On islands like St. Lucia and Dominica these volcanoes have been utilized as geoparks and the areas even being designated as World Heritage Sites. In many of these islands, farming communities also live on the slopes to these volcanoes and with the increased pursuit of geothermal energy the siting of geothermal operations are also located in close proximity. Volcanic activity, therefore, has a significant impact on these islands at a local and national level. Many volcanomonitoring institutions face the financial and human resources challenge of providing ongoing monitoring services to economically burdened small island states. This has often led to the exploration of alternative low-cost monitoring options and strategies to be adopted by monitoring agencies. One such strategy is the adoption of a volcanic risk reduction approach to research and monitoring activities, which integrates the social and physical sciences through the engagement of local communities as partners with scientists in disaster risk reduction. We present a recent approach adopted using this type of strategy in St. Lucia and lessons learnt from this approach with implications for volcano tourism on island. The potential use of this strategy in Dominica is also presented, given the economic challenges the island currently faces during its ongoing recovery efforts from Hurricane Maria in 2017. This name seems appropriate because it so clearly expresses the intimate relations which women in the Caribbean share, is so firmly gendered, and honors the importance of friendship in relation to the important rituals of marriage, birth, and (implied) death. Moreover, macomère is a French Creole word which, although related to the French language, has taken on a structure and meaning which is indigenous to the Caribbean. The word is spelled in this way, instead of in the clearly Creole manner (macumè, makumeh, macoomè, macomeh, and many other variants), so that the female connotations of the word are highlighted and those meanings which apply to males ("a womanish or gossipy man"; "a homosexual") are less obvious. In those islands where Krèol (linguistic term for the French patos) is the first language, the same term is used for both females and males with meaning determined by the context. In islands such as Trinidad, however, where English has overlain Krèol, the Creole (linguistic term for the English patois) has incorporated the redundant my macomè and macomè man, thus reinforcing both the perceptions of intimacy and the female quality of the term. Interestingly enough, Richard Allsopp in The Dictionary of Caribbean English Usage (Oxford University Press, 1996) has indicated the possibility that maku in Belize, with the meaning "midwife", is also derived from macomère. Hence, the word forces us to recall the continuities and correspondences in Caribbean languages and cultures, as well as the dynamic, creative, and transforming power of Creoles. In the purely English-speaking islands, the only comparable term is godmother (usually the mother's best friend). In the Hispanophone Caribbean, there is the similar comadre, although, as we would expect, some of the connotations are different. Fort Fincastle, completed in 1793, with its brick walls was built by the Royal Governor of the islands, Lord Dunmore (also known as Viscount Fincastle). This uniquely shaped fort has a triangular projection and rounded side which sits atop Bennet Hill. It is located near the top of the Queen's Staircase. Later, Fort Fincastle served as a lighthouse until 1816 and then was used as a signal tower. The Water Tower and cannons can be seen in the image. Université des Antilles Description : In the eighteenth and the early nineteenth centuries, inter-imperial connections, many of which were illicit, were of crucial importance in the functioning of European colonialism in the Atlantic world and during its heyday. One example of economically important trade connections across imperial borders is the maritime mule trade. Based on a large variety of secondary sources, supplemented by primary materials, this paper seeks to provide insights into the functioning of this business. Enterprising merchants used the opportunities available to them to connect breeding areas and zones of cash crop production. Likewise, geography played an important role in connecting demand and supply over both short and long distances, as physical proximity and trade winds helped forge connections. Mules were transported to the insular Caribbean, and in particular the French islands, to serve as draft animals, especially by moving vertical cylinders called rollers that crushed the sugar cane, although they were not the only animals used for such purposes. To meet the mule demand of the Caribbean islands, the animals were imported from a variety of regions, including France, North Africa, and the Cape Verde islands. Eventually, however, supplies from other parts of the Greater Caribbean came to dominate the mule business. Simpson ( Manitoba, Canada ) Résumé : The word macomère is widely used by women in the Caribbean to mean "my child's godmother"; "my best friend and close female confindante"; "my bridesmaid, or another female wedding member of a wedding party of which I was a bridesmaid"; "the godmother of the child to whom I am also godmother"; "the woman who, by virtue of the depth of her friendship, has rights and privileges over my child and is a surrogate mother." This name seems appropriate because it so clearly expresses the intimate relations which women in the Caribbean share, is so firmly gendered, and honors the importance of friendship in relation to the important rituals of marriage, birth, and (implied) death. Moreover, macomère is a French Creole word which, although related to the French language, has taken on a structure and meaning which is indigenous to the Caribbean. The word is spelled in this way, instead of in the clearly Creole manner (macumè, makumeh, macoomè, macomeh, and many other variants), so that the female connotations of the word are highlighted and those meanings which apply to males ("a womanish or gossipy man"; "a homosexual") are less obvious. Hence, the word forces us to recall the continuities and correspondences in Caribbean languages and cultures, as well as the dynamic, creative, and transforming power of Creoles. In the purely English-speaking islands, the only comparable term is godmother (usually the mother's best friend). In the Hispanophone Caribbean, there is the similar comadre, although, as we would expect, some of the connotations are different. Caymans Newstar magazine Résumé : (Ownership) Received by the Rubenstein Library as a gift from Holly Ackerman in 2010 Those Cuban rafters who leave from the south side of the island often wash up in the Cayman Islands. A refugee camp existed in the Cayman Islands during the 1990s and held almost 2,000 Cuban rafters at its peak in 1994-1995. Most were transferred to Guantánamo or allowed to repair their rafts and head back to sea. Those who continued their journey and survived, generally landed in Honduras.
