INRA, CFCS Description : The Sargassum seaweed [Sargassum natans and S. fluitans] can be classed as a perennial invasive weed problem in all the Caribbean islands. It has been shown to affect fisher-folks, sea bathers, and tourists. It is proving to be costly to remove; in addition to its offensive odour which hampers the clean-up operations. The University of Trinidad and Tobago at the BAFT campus is engaged in series of activities to find suitable uses of the seaweed as animal feed, and as soil medium and ameliorant. This study aimed at evaluating the suitability of the seaweed as a growing media for the production of sweet peppers [Capsicum annuum var. annuum] using different percentage of the weed (0, 25, 50 and 100%) with soil under greenhouse conditions. The crop growth and development and yield were monitored. The results indicated that the plant height [Y pl ht = 16.6 + 0.3 DAT - 0.11 TRT] and leaf number [Y no.lvs = 0.90 + 1.04 DAT - 0.206 TRT] increased as age of the crop increased, but decreased with the increase in percentage of seaweed/ soil mixture. A similar response was observed for the flower buds and fruits numbers and percentage soil mixture. The medium had no effect on the crop transpiration and net photosynthesis rate [PN] , photosynthesis active radiation[PAR] , and stomatal conductance. A nutrient analysis of the medium was also conducted. The duration of migration of Atlantic Anguilla larvae Auteur(s) : Bonhommeau, Sylvain Castonguay, Martin Rivot, Etienne Sabatie, Richard Le Pape, Olivier Éditeur(s) : Wiley-blackwell Publishing, Inc Résumé : Oceanic larvae of the European (Anguilla anguilla) and American (A. rostrata) eels have to cross the Atlantic Ocean from the Sargasso Sea to European or North American coasts before entering continental habitats. In some European rivers, eel recruitment is now < 1% of levels in the 1980s. A better understanding of the effects of anthropogenic pressures and environmental fluctuations on eel larvae and subsequent recruitment is a prerequisite to build efficient management plans. The present paper provides insight into the critical oceanic phase of the eel life cycle with a focus on the duration of the larval migration whose estimates varies between 7 months and more than 2 years in both species. Does this range correspond to a natural variability in larval duration or does it stem from methodological artefacts? We first review the different methods used to estimate the duration of larval migration and critically describe their possible sources of misinterpretation. We then evaluate the consistency of these methods with the current knowledge about the ecology and physiology of eel larvae and the physical oceanography. While a moderate discrepancy in migration duration was found between methods for the American eel, the discrepancy was large in the European eel. In this species, otolith microstructure studies indicated migration durations between 7 and 9 months, while other methods pointed to durations of about 2 years. We show that estimates in favour of a long migration duration seem more robust to methodological caveats than methods estimating short durations of migration. Mulching effects of fresh Sargassum Seaweed on soil properties and plant growth ; Effets des Sargasses Seaweed sur les propriétés du sol et la croissance des plantes. Auteur(s) : Lopez, Francis Année de publication : Loading the player... Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles. Service commun de la documentation University of West Indies, Barbados Extrait de : 52e congrès annuel de la Société caribéenne des plantes alimentaires / 52nd annual meeting of the Caribbean food crops society (CFCS), du 10 au 16 juillet 2016. INRA, CFCS Description : Mulch application of Sargassum seaweed (Sargassum spp.) to soil can help to reduce beach contamination in the Caribbean Region while providing beneficial horticultural effects. This study investigated the effects of fresh Sargassum mulch on soil properties and plant growth in a test crop of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. â? ? HA 3019â? TM). Fresh Sargassum material (washed and unwashed) was applied as mulches (0, 5 and 8cm thick) to small field plots one week after transplanting of 3-week-old seedlings. The mulch material was raked away from the plots after three weeks exposure. Observations on soil moisture, electrical conductivity, pH and biological activity, and plant growth were made at 1 to 2-week intervals over a 6-week period with additional soil measurements after 10 weeks. Soil biological activity (respiration) was increased by the Sargassum mulch with values being similar for the 5cm and 8cm mulch layers. Soil moisture content, pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were increased as the mulch layer increased and EC values were only marginally reduced by Sargassum washing. An increase in plant growth compared to the control treatment was noted only in the washed Sargassum treatments. Potential benefits of Sargassum seaweed mulches on soil properties and plant growth can be nullified due to soil salinization effects.
Les pycnogonides de la croisière 1951 du « Président Théodore Tissier » Auteur(s) : Bourdillon, A Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : The 1951 cruise of the "Président-Théodore-Tissier" was conducted from February 13th to June 30th, 1951. During these four and a half months, the vessel, which departed from Brest, stopped successively in Madeira, the French Caribbean, the Bermudas, Woods Hole, Halifax, on the banks of Newfoundland, the Azores Islands, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and then sailed back to Brest after 13,000 miles in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. The North-Western Atlantic and the Caribbean Pycnogonida have been the focus in 1948 of a very comprehensive and documented review by J. W. Hedgpeth followed by a catalogue of the stations of the different expeditions which worked in the Northern Atlantic Ocean and the studied species. Moreover, the work of Marcus (1940) on the South-American Pycnogonida is an excellent basis for the study of the tropical Atlantic Pycnogonida. Recently, J.-H. Stock (1954 a) published a preliminary study on Pycnogonida collected at small depths in the Caribbean. During the 1951 cruise of the "Président-Théodore-Tissier", 15 species of Pycnogonida were collected at 16 stations which can be classified, from a biogeographic point of view, in five groups of unequal importance: the floating sargassum (8 stations), the Little Caribbean (5 stations), the Bermudas (1 station), the surroundings of Wood Hole (1 station), the banks of Newfoundland (1 station).
