In Trinidad and Tobago, carnival celebrations begin after Christmas and peak during the Monday and Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday. Costumed masqueraders and festival revelers partake in the two-day street parade, generally accompanied by soca, calypso, and steel pan music, before beginning the Lenten season. The National Museum and Art Gallery hosts a permanent ongoing exhibit of masks and costumes from past carnivals. The carnival costume, pictured in the center, is made with long and short white feathers and features highlights of black feathers. Gold ornaments decorate the costume which also has a ram’s head near the waist area. Next to this costume is an ornate peacock head gear which has been placed atop an armless statue with a human face. Slide labeled Trin. 12.

The costume also features geometric shapes and a stylized bird’s head, with the opening for the wearer at the base of the bird’s neck. Description : Lorsqu'au XVIe siècle les premiers explorateurs occidentaux abordent les côtes de l'Afrique subsaharienne, les habitants qu'ils découvrent ,'évoluent pas nus, comme les Brésiliens dépeints par les contemporains de Jean de Léry. Selon les textes européens des siècles suivants, leurs vêtements et parures apparaissent comme soignés et révélateurs d'une série de codes sociaux et anthropologiques scrupuleusement organisés et gradués de la noblesse au peuple. Mais comment les illustrateurs de ces récits de voyages et des livres de costumes leur faisant écho représentent-ils ces vêtements et parures ? Ne délivrent-ils que des visons simplistes et idéalisées, conformes aux fantasmes des acteurs et lecteurs de l'époque ? Alors que les modes et règles vestimentaires européennes pénètrent progressivement en Afrique Noire, le XVIIIe siècle en tient-il ou non compte dans les catégories sociales, sexuelles ou régionales qu'il donne à voir ?

Description : Dans la construction de l'imaginaire colonial, les "vieilles colonies" apparaissent à la fin du XIXe siècle comme les symboles d'une assimilation réussie. A l'heure du paternalisme triomphant, les pouvoirs publics sont convaincus que seule la France peut faire naître le sentiment esthétique chez les Antillais trop longtemps exposés "à la langueur de l'ennui", incapables de ressentir le sublime et le pittoresque, pourtant omniprésents dans les paysages paradisiaques insulaires. Seuls des esprits éclairés peuvent réveiller des talents artistiques endormis. Cette communication portera principalement sur l'impact des images dans la construction d'une identité antillaise. Elle évoquera particulièrement le rôle des artistes de "la Société coloniale des artistes français" dans la diffusion d'un imaginaire créole.

Description : Richard Price présente la nouvelle édition de son livre Le bagnard et le colonel, parue en 2016. En 1925 en Martinique une émeute se solde par dix morts et quatorze blessés. Dans la ville du Diamant des pêcheurs brandissent une effigie en bois d'un colonel, riche propriétaire de l'usine locale, pour protester contre la fraude électorale. L'auteur de cette statue est Médard Aribot, un original qui vit dans une grotte. On dit que c'est pour cet acte d'insolence qu'il sera condamné et envoyé au bagne. Cinquante ans plus tard, sa vie est célébrée par des cartes postales, guides touristiques, pièces de théâtre et costumes de carnaval. Richard Price dénoue les fils de cette histoire. II montre comment les tensions de la société martiniquaise entre colonialisme, passé esclavagiste et modernité se cristallisent autour de cette sculpture et de l'histoire de son auteur, emblèmes de résistance. Et comment la mémoire peut produire la folklorisation de la vie quotidienne et transformer l'habitat et l'oeuvre d'un marginal en simples manifestations touristiques.

Description : Différence entre les bals masqués d'ailleurs et les bals paré-masqués de Guyane. Le bal paré-masqué de Guyane renvoi à la séduction du touloulou par le costume qu'il porte, il est dans l'exhibition. Il comporte un avant, un pendant, et un après dancing. Les femmes se préparent et vont se retrouver dans la plus grande discrétion, pour préparer leurs toilettes, s'habiller ensemble, vont être marrainées avec quelqu'un de plus âgé qui leurs transmettent les codes, les symboles, les rites : l'anonymat, l'anonymat à travers le vêtement, le parlé, la démarche...etc. Le bal paré-masqué de Guyane, c'est tout un ensemble de rite, ce qui le distingue des autres bals masqués d'ailleurs.

Jonkonnu is an Afro-Bahamian carnival-like festival held every Boxing Day, New Year's Day and summer time. Groups dance down streets and dress in paper-fringed costumes. The musicians often use traditional instruments such as goat skin drums and cowbells.
