Résumé : Un modèle Ecopath de l'estuaire du Sine-Saloum (Sénégal) comportant au total 37 groupes fonctionnels a été appliqué dans la présente étude en vue de déterminer les faits essentiels de ce système aquatique. La grande biodiversité spécifique des poissons de l'écosystème peut y jouer un rôle en assurant son intégrité, spécialement en présence de facteurs de stress, bien qu'il ait été observé que ce n'est pas entièrement le cas. Les résultats montrent qu'un autre facteur de mitigation est le niveau des forces d'interaction entre les groupes fonctionnels. La stabilité est accrue par des relations plus faibles et des pyramides plus courtes et plus larges. Bien que différentes questions se posent concernant les facteurs conduisant à la stabilité d'un système, les méthodes et les façons de les approcher devraient envisager d'en situer les résultats dans le contexte d'une théorie écologique plus large.
An Ecopath model of the Sine Saloum estuary (Senegal) with a total of 37 functional groups is used in this study to determine the key features of this aquatic system. The high fish species biodiversity in the ecosystem may play a role of ensuring its integrity, especially in the presence of stress, though it was observed that this is not entirely the case. Results show that another mitigating factor is the level of interaction strengths between functional groups. Stability is improved by weaker connectance as well as shorter and fatter pyramids. Though differing issues arise with respect to questions driving a system's stability, methods and approaches should consider placing results in the context of a broader ecological theory.

Résumé : This paper provides a review of ecosystems modelling within the Caribbean using the Ecopath approach and software tools. The review is not intended to provide a direct comparison of the modelled ecosystems attributes and performance, as this would require having access to the models and the data sets used to build the models. Rather, a general comparison is made of the outputs of the models and the various authors’ descriptions of ecosystem attributes.
L’article présente une revue des écosystèmes marins et des ressources halieutiques de la zone Caraïbe en utilisant l’approche Ecopath pour la modélisation des interactions au sein des écosystèmes. En dépit des nombreuses recherches déjà réalisées, la modélisation des écosystèmes marins de la Caraïbe est parcellaire et nécessite des investigations conséquentes.

Résumé : Marine protected areas (MPAs) have the potential to enhance the long-term sustainability of coastal resources, and the artisanal fisheries which depend on them. However, recreational fisheries, which are increasing their impacts on coastal resources worldwide, may reduce the benefits that MPAs provide to declining artisanal fisheries. Here we used the Bonifacio Straits Natural Reserve (BSNR) Corsica as a study case to simulate the combined effects on coastal resources of artisanal and recreational fishing efforts. The BSNR ecosystem was modelled using mass-balance modelling of trophic interactions. This model was compared to another built on a non-protected area from the same region. We aggregated fishing fleets into artisanal and recreational categories, and we simulated various combinations of fishing effort over a 20 yr dynamic simulation using Ecosim. We showed that fishing activities have an additional top-down effect on the food web and that they decrease the targeted group's biomass, such as piscivorous species. We found, for some trophic groups, non-trivial patterns of biomass variation through trophic cascades. Our trophic approach revealed that some groups may suffer a biomass decrease when MPAs are set or enforced, due to the combined effect of artisanal and recreational fisheries. Overall, our results illustrate the value of modelling to manage MPAs, as a complementary tool to surveys. Models provide the opportunity to anticipate the potential consequences, at the ecosystem level, of socio-political decisions that aim to sustain coastal resources while managing artisanal and recreational fisheries.
