Description : The majority of maritime trade within the Caribbean has been based on smuggling since the beginning of European influenced trade in this area. With the establishment of Non-Iberian colonies such as English, French, Dutch, German and Danish during the 17th century also Jewish merchants seeped into the illegal markets with sugarcane, tobacco, slaves, salt, vanilla etc. This lecture would like to highlight the illicit networks of Jewish and New Christian traders based on their clandestine Caribbean routes by means of Braudelian methods during 1670 and 1730. Seemingly insignificant ports and coastal communities as well as bays have become global cargo hubs due to these extensive networks. The majority of these places have been located in the Caribbean Frontier, which has been often dominated by Indians, escaped slaves, refugees, pirates and other outlaws. The role of Jews as middlemen between legal and illegal trade will be another focus of this lecture.

In 1509, Diego Columbus, Christopher Columbus's son and Governor of the Indies, appointed Juan de Esquivel Lieutenant in Jamaica. Upon his arrival, de Esquivel established the first European settlement and first capital in Jamaica called Sevilla la Nueva, now known as Seville. Slide labeled Jam. Seville near where Col. landed.

This monument to Christopher Columbus stands before the front entrance to the Government House in Nassau, New Providence Island, Bahamas. The Government House, an example of Caribbean Georgian architecture features a four columned portico. In 1492, Columbus became the first European to visit the Bahamas when he landed on San Salvador. The statue, built in London, was imported by Sir James Carmichael Smyth in 1830. The current Government House, with its four columned porticos, was completed by 1806. It is the home of the governor-general, the queen’s representative in The Bahamas. Sections of the building were renovated after the hurricane of 1929. The Duke of Windsor was assigned Governor of the Bahamas in 1940 and lived in the house during that time.

Résumé : Bonamiosis is a parasitic disease (causative agent: Bonamia ostreae) affecting the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis, responsible for a drastic decline in the aquaculture production of this oyster species. Therefore a selective breeding program for resistance to bonamiosis has been undertaken since 1985 bu Ifremer, leading to the production of several selected oyster families. In the present study, a 6-month cohabitation challenge experiment was performed in order to transmit the disease from wild oysters (injected with the parasite) to two tested families of oysters originating from the selective breeding program. Mortalities were checked daily, and ventricular heart smears were performed on dying or moribund oysters to detect the level of infection to B. ostreae. The first infections occurred after 4 months of challenge in the tested oysters (Family 1 and Family 2). The cumulative mortalities after 5 monts were 58% for the wil oysters, 9% for Family 1 (20-month old at the beginning of the experiment) and 20% for Family 2 (8-month, old). The parasite could be detected in 66.8% of the dying wild oysters, 67.5% of the dying oysters of Family 1, 89% of the dying oysters of Family 2 and only 11% of the surviving oysters of Family 2. The mortality was significantly higher in Family 2 thant in Family 1 (x2= 20.87, p<0.001, d.f.) as well as the level of infection by the parasite found in heart smear (x2=24.34, p<0.001, 4 d.f.). This result demonstrates that prespawning oysters as yong as 1 year-old can become infected with the parasite and die from bonamiosis. This result is inconsistent with the commonly accepted critical age of 2 years-old for the disease development. The most probable cause of the dscrepancy in the development of bonamiosis between the 2 tested families is a difference in genetic background.

BACKGROUND: Women of reproductive age can be exposed to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) at work, and exposure to EDCs in pregnancy may affect fetal growth. OBJECTIVES: We assessed whether maternal occupational exposure to EDCs during pregnancy as classified by application of a job exposure matrix was associated with birth weight, term low birth weight (LBW), length of gestation, and preterm delivery. METHODS: Using individual participant data from 133,957 mother-child pairs in 13 European cohorts spanning births from 1994 through 2011, we linked maternal job titles with exposure to 10 EDC groups as assessed through a job exposure matrix. For each group, we combined the two levels of exposure categories (possible and probable) and compared birth outcomes with the unexposed group (exposure unlikely). We performed meta-analyses of cohort-specific estimates. RESULTS: Eleven percent of pregnant women were classified as exposed to EDCs at work during pregnancy, based on job title. Classification of exposure to one or more EDC group was associated with an increased risk of term LBW [odds ratio (OR) = 1.25; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.49], as were most specific EDC groups; this association was consistent across cohorts. Further, the risk increased with increasing number of EDC groups (OR = 2.11; 95% CI: 1.10, 4.06 for exposure to four or more EDC groups). There were few associations (p < 0.05) with the other outcomes; women holding job titles classified as exposed to bisphenol A or brominated flame retardants were at higher risk for longer length of gestation. CONCLUSION: Results from our large population-based birth cohort design indicate that employment during pregnancy in occupations classified as possibly or probably exposed to EDCs was associated with an increased risk of term LBW.

Résumé : Kalinago (Carib) Indians migrated from South America into the Windward Islands beginning about 1400. They resisted the Europeans, and eventually retreated to the more mountainous parts of St. Vincent and Dominica, where they inter-married with escaped African slaves. In 1796 the British deported the St. Vincent Kalinago (about 5,000) to the island of Ruatan off Honduras. From there, they moved into present-day Belize, where their descendants live today. Descendants of the Dominica Kalinago still live on Dominica. This print portrays a number of their customs.

Description : In the eighteenth and the early nineteenth centuries, inter-imperial connections, many of which were illicit, were of crucial importance in the functioning of European colonialism in the Atlantic world and during its heyday. One example of economically important trade connections across imperial borders is the maritime mule trade. Based on a large variety of secondary sources, supplemented by primary materials, this paper seeks to provide insights into the functioning of this business. Enterprising merchants used the opportunities available to them to connect breeding areas and zones of cash crop production. Likewise, geography played an important role in connecting demand and supply over both short and long distances, as physical proximity and trade winds helped forge connections. Mules were transported to the insular Caribbean, and in particular the French islands, to serve as draft animals, especially by moving vertical cylinders called rollers that crushed the sugar cane, although they were not the only animals used for such purposes. To meet the mule demand of the Caribbean islands, the animals were imported from a variety of regions, including France, North Africa, and the Cape Verde islands. Eventually, however, supplies from other parts of the Greater Caribbean came to dominate the mule business.

Fish is a rich source of essential nutrients for fetal development, but in contrast, it is also a well-known route of exposure to environmental pollutants. We assessed whether fish intake during pregnancy is associated with fetal growth and the length of gestation in a panel of European birth cohort studies. The study sample of 151,880 mother-child pairs was derived from 19 population-based European birth cohort studies. Individual data from cohorts were pooled and harmonized. Adjusted cohort-specific effect estimates were combined by using a random- and fixed-effects meta-analysis. Women who ate fish >1 time/wk during pregnancy had lower risk of preterm birth than did women who rarely ate fish (≤ 1 time/wk); the adjusted RR of fish intake >1 but <3 times/wk was 0.87 (95% CI: 0.82, 0.92), and for intake ≥ 3 times/wk, the adjusted RR was 0.89 (95% CI: 0.84, 0.96). Women with a higher intake of fish during pregnancy gave birth to neonates with a higher birth weight by 8.9 g (95% CI: 3.3, 14.6 g) for >1 but <3 times/wk and 15.2 g (95% CI: 8.9, 21.5 g) for ≥ 3 times/wk independent of gestational age. The association was greater in smokers and in overweight or obese women. Findings were consistent across cohorts. This large, international study indicates that moderate fish intake during pregnancy is associated with lower risk of preterm birth and a small but significant increase in birth weight.

Résumé : El turismo náutico se concibe como un segmento estratégico para el desarrollo turístico de España y sus destinos costeros. En Canarias existe una apuesta pública por la especialización del Archipiélago y su reposicionamiento como destino líder europeo de escala en el Atlántico, por las múltiples cualidades naturales que posee la región para el deporte náutico, y su posición geográfica estratégica en el cruce desde Europa hacia el Caribe. Así, se viene planteando una renovación y desarrollo del sector de la náutica de recreo y el turismo de yates, con estrategias enfocadas a la diversificación y el crecimiento. Los altos costes sociales y medioambientales asociados a este tipo de desarrollo justifican la necesidad de una mayor atención académica, que permita comprender las particularidades y complejidades de la actividad y este mercado turístico. En la misma medida en que esta actividad es vista como un factor de riesgo para el medioambiente, la comunidad local y la franja litoral, también son crecientes las preocupaciones y sensibilidad por parte de los turistas hacia estos fenómenos. Dada la carencia de investigaciones en el área, este estudio se propone identificar los determinantes de la satisfacción de los navegantes europeos con los puertos de escala de Canarias. Como resultado de encuestar a 185 navegantes europeos durante su escala en seis puertos deportivos del archipiélago en 2014 y 2015, y la validación de un sistema de ecuaciones estructurales, se ha podido demostrar, entre otros aspectos, que existe una predilección en el mercado de navegantes europeos por presenciar esfuerzos y políticas de gestión ambiental sostenible en las marinas, siendo éste un factor determinante de su satisfacción. Los hallazgos permiten elaborar una serie de recomendaciones a gestores y operadores turísticos del sector, en aras de contribuir al diseño de estrategias que garanticen un desarrollo más sostenible y razonable de la actividad, basados en el efecto positivo que producen estas estrategias en la demanda, y el potencial valor de diferenciación turística que otorga, en el entorno competitivo del sector.
The nautical activiity has great potential for the socio-economic development of tourism. In Spain, the sector is a priority concern, especially for the Canary Islands, which show a clear commitment to specialise and reposition the destination as a top quality nautical destination on a European level. These aspects, together with the prior experience and tradition these islands have as a stopover destination for vessels in the Atlantic, when crossing Europe towards the Caribbean, represent strengths that have not yet been taken advantage of in the archipelago’s attempt to move away from its image as a traditional sun and beach destination. The Governmental Authorities in the Canary Islands have clear strategies in place to promote the yachting tourism growth. However, renewing the sector is believed to be a difficult process because of the large number of factors that interact within the same. This is a phenomenon of sufficient social and environmental significance to justify academic attention. This research analyses therefore the determinants of the European yachtsmen´s satisfaction with the ports of call of the Canary Islands. Data results of questioning 185 European yachtsmen crossing the Atlantic during 2014 and 2015 reveal that, among other aspects, proper environmental management of marinas leads to an increasing yachtsmen´s satisfaction. The findings provide the opportunity for developing recommendations for tourism managers and practitioners, in the attempt to contribute to a more sustainable and reasoned development and growth in the sector. Based on the current preferences of the European market of yachtsmen, it is possible to assure that environmental and social responsibility policies are a key differentiation factor for the competitiveness of the sector.

La bonamiose est une maladie parasitaire (agent causal : Bonamia ostreae) affectant l'huître plate européenne Ostrea edulis, responsable d'un déclin drastique de sa production aquacole. Des programmes de sélection pour la résistance à la bonamiose ont été entrepris pour contrer cette maladie. Dans cette étude, une expérience de 6 mois d'infection par cohabitation a été réalisée de manière à transmettre la maladie à partir d'huîtres sauvages injectées avec le parasite vers deux familles testées d'huîtres (âgées de 20 et 8 mois en début d'expérience, avec des origines génétiques différentes) issues du programme de sélection développé par IFREMER en France. Les mortalités ont été vérifiées quotidiennement et des frottis de coeur ventriculaire réalisés sur les huîtres mortes ou moribondes pour détecter le niveau d'infection par B. ostreae. La mortalité a commencé chez les huîtres testées après 4 mois de cohabitation. Les mortalités cumulées après 6 mois étaient de 58 % chez les huîtres sauvages, 9 % chez la Famille 1 (âgées de 20 mois) et 20 % chez la Famille 2 (âgées de 8 mois). Chez les huîtres mourantes, le parasite a pu être détecté chez 67 % des huîtres sauvages, 68 % de la Famille 1 et 89 % de la Famille 2. Il n'a pu être détecté que chez 11 % des huîtres survivantes de la Famille 2. La mortalité et le niveau d'infection par le parasite étaient significativement plus élevés chez la Famille 2 que chez la Famille 1. Nos résultats démontrent que des huîtres âgées de un an peuvent devenir infectées par le parasite et surtout, peuvent mourir de bonamiose. Ce résultat contraste avec l'âge critique de développement de la maladie communément accepté de 2 ans. De plus, aucune relation claire entre la longueur de la coquille et le niveau d'infection n'a été observée. Nous faisons également la revue des différentes méthodes d'infection de l'huître plate européenne O. edulis avec B. ostreae en conditions expérimentales et leurs principaux résultats.

Résumé : The EUNIS (European Union Nature Information System) habitat classification system aims to provide a common European reference set of habitat types within a hierarchical classification, and to cover all terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats of Europe. The classification facilitates reporting of habitat data in a comparable manner, for use in nature conservation (e.g. inventories, monitoring and assessments), habitat mapping and environmental management. For the marine environment the importance of a univocal habitat classification system is confirmed by the fact that many European initiatives, aimed at marine mapping, assessment and reporting, are increasingly using EUNIS habitat categories and respective codes. For this reason substantial efforts have been made to include information on marine benthic habitats from different regions, aiming to provide a comprehensive geographical coverage of European seas. However, there still remain many concerns on its applicability as only a small fraction of Europe's seas are fully mapped and increasing knowledge and application raise further issues to be resolved. This paper presents an overview of the main discussion and conclusions of a workshop, organised by the MeshAtlantic project, focusing upon the experience in using the EUNIS habitats classification across different countries and seas, together with case studies. The aims of the meeting were to: (i) bring together scientists with exper_ience_in the use of the EUNIS marine classification and representatives from the European Environment Agency (EEA); (ii) agree on enhancements to EUNIS that ensure an improved representation of the European marine habitats; and (iii) establish practices that make marine habitat maps produced by scientists more consistent with the needs of managers and decision-makers. During the workshop challenges for the future development of EUNIS were identified, which have been classified into five categories: (1) structure and hierarchy; (2) biology; (3) terminology; (4) mapping; and (5) future development. The workshop ended with a declaration from the attendees, with recommendations to the EEA and European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity, to take into account the outputs of the workshop, which identify weaknesses in the current classification and include proposals for its modification, and to devise a process to further develop the marine component of the EUNIS habitat classification.
