Résumé : (Biographical) Samuel Cary, Jr., was born in 1742 in the Boston suburb of Chelsea. Following his graduation from Harvard, he moved to the West Indies where he managed plantations for various individuals before purchasing a Grenada sugar plantation. In 1772, after the death of his father, Cary left the West Indies and returned to live in the Chelsea family home.
(Biographical) Charles Spooner was a British planter who owned several plantations in the Caribbean, specifically the Leeward Islands of the West Indies. William Manning (1763-1835), a British merchant with property and business interests in the West Indies, was a member of Parliament and served as a director and governor of the Bank of England.

De Lisser was born in Falmouth, Jamaica, and attended William Morrison's Collegiate School in Kingston. He started work at the Institute of Jamaica at the age of 14. Three years later he joined the Jamaica Daily Gleaner, of which his father was editor, as a proofreader, and two years later became a reporter on the Jamaica Times. In 1903, De Lisser became assistant editor of the Gleaner and was editor within the year. He wrote several articles for the paper every day. He also produced a novel or non-fiction book every year, beginning in 1913 with Jane: A Story of Jamaica, significant for being the first West Indian novel to have a central black character. Another famous novel of his, The White Witch of Rosehall (1929), is linked to a legend of a haunting in Jamaica. De Lisser also wrote several plays. In December 1920 he began publishing an annual magazine, Planters' Punch. De Lisser devoted much time and effort to the revival of the Jamaican sugar industry and represented Jamaica at a number of sugar conferences around the world. Description : Antarctica is a continent of enigmas. Stunning geographic beauty belies its inhospitable climate. Covered a mile thick in ice, it is the world's largest desert. Fossil ferns found in its mountains speak of its prehistory as a tropical rainforest, but now is largely devoid of life. Its most famous inhabitant, the penguin, is thought of as a flightless bird, but soars underwater much as a falcon glides the sky. Perhaps one of the greatest enigmas is the contrast between the terrestrial and marine environments. On land, monochromatic snow and ice support little life, yet the sea teams with life, life that expresses itself with the full rainbow of colors. Color is but one manifestation of chemical ecology. The Antarctic benthos supports an extensive community of predators and prey, competitors and facilitators. A harsh geographic history has contributed to marine diversification and enhanced what we now recognize as a rich flora and fauna, commensurate in some instances with temperate kelp forests and even approaching the richness of tropical marine environments. Not surprisingly, Antarctic benthic ecology is highly dependent on chemical mediation of interspecific interactions, interweaving chemodiversity with biodiversity in a classical yin and yang feedback loop. The evolution of selective chemical defenses facilitates drug discovery research, producing suites of metabolites that inform structure-activity studies and add breadth to bioactivity profiles. This presentation will focus on recent and contextual research from our lab which has demonstrated the potential for new biomedical lead molecules and scaffolds from these difficult to access biological resources.

BackgroundPopulation attributable risks (PARs) are useful tool to estimate the burden of risk factors in cancer incidence. Few studies estimated the PARs of oral cavity cancer to tobacco smoking alone, alcohol drinking alone and their joint consumption but none performed analysis stratified by subsite, gender or age. Among the suspected risk factors of oral cavity cancer, only PAR to a family history of head and neck cancer was reported in two studies. The purpose of this study was to estimate in France the PARs of oral cavity cancer to several recognized and suspected risk factors, overall and by subsite, gender and age.MethodsWe analysed data from 689 oral cavity cancer cases and 3481 controls included in a population-based case–control study, the ICARE study. Unconditional logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs), PARs and 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI).ResultsThe PARs were 0.3 % (95 % CI −3.9 %; +3.9 %) for alcohol alone, 12.7 % (6.9 %–18.0 %) for tobacco alone and 69.9 % (64.4 %–74.7 %) for their joint consumption. PAR to combined alcohol and tobacco consumption was 74 % (66.5 %–79.9 %) in men and 45.4 % (32.7 %–55.6 %) in women. Among suspected risk factors, body mass index 2 years before the interview <25 kg.m−2, never tea drinking and family history of head and neck cancer explained 35.3 % (25.7 %–43.6 %), 30.3 % (14.4 %–43.3 %) and 5.8 % (0.6 %–10.8 %) of cancer burden, respectively. About 93 % (88.3 %–95.6 %) of oral cavity cancers were explained by all risk factors, 94.3 % (88.4 %–97.2 %) in men and only 74.1 % (47.0 %–87.3 %) in women.ConclusionOur study emphasizes the role of combined tobacco and alcohol consumption in the oral cavity cancer burden in France and gives an indication of the proportion of cases attributable to other risk factors. Most of oral cavity cancers are attributable to concurrent smoking and drinking and would be potentially preventable through smoking or drinking cessation. If the majority of cases are explained by recognized or suspected risk factors in men, a substantial number of cancers in women are probably due to still unexplored factors that remain to be clarified by future studies.

The Caribe Hilton was built in 1949, becoming the first Hilton hotel outside of the continental US, and thus marking the beginning of Hilton International. Designed by Osvaldo Toro and Miguel Ferrer, it originally contained 300 rooms, but has since expanded through multiple renovations (including major remodeling and grand re-opening in 1999). A staple of the Puerto Rican tourism industry, The Caribe Hilton’s frequent guests include famous entertainers, athletes, and political figures. It is also known for one of its bars, where the first Piña Colada drink was made in August 1954. Also visible in the photograph, is part of the Condado Lagoon and the historic Fortín de San Gerónimo del Boquerón, which was built in the 17th century and was crucial in the defense of San Juan against a British attack in 1797.

It served as a theatre and town hall in the 1880s Mirta and Jennie, Ybor's daughters performed in the first show in 1888. Later Jose Marti would be fetedhere, made his two famous speeched and formed the Cuban Revolutionary Pary on 7th Avenue and 13th Street, an historic marker designates the corner of the "Cradle of Cuban Liberty".

The Blue Lagoon, also known as Blue Hole, was renamed after the 1980 film "The Blue Lagoon" with Brooke Shields, which was partially shot in the area. This natural spring fed lagoon in Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica opens unto the sea through a narrow funnel. This is also the site of a famous Jacques Cousteau dive. Cousteau verified that the lagoon was not “bottomless” and in reality measured over 178 feet (54 meters) deep. The image shows a view of boats in the lagoon from breadfruit trees. Résumé : Crayfishing is not particularly organized in the French islands as their population is not fond of large crustaceans. However, young crayfishes, about the size of the European scampi are ordered by rich Creoles for receptions or family gatherings. But lobsters, heavier than 0.750 to 1 kilo are eaten only by Europeans.Any fisherman who is asked to provide 10 kilos of crayfish catches them very quickly with a brass snare or a hook placed underneath the rocks. Some artisans gather the crustaceans in large rectangular baskets made of wire mesh and called "gardes", to wait for the potential customer. There is no specific pot for this type of fishing whereas Creole wicker makers worked hard on the creation of tools both complex and difficult to make to catch small morays; a fish which does not have a great commercial value.Consequently, it is impossible to precisely assess the importance of the exploitable large crustacean stock based on the catches of the Creole fishermen. If the performances of some crayfish boats from Douarnenez, using Mauritanian nets on the banks of St-Martin, can be considered as extremely satisfactory, it is not the case of other attempts. A whole study has to be undertaken. This note is only the beginning of a larger work focusing on the natural history of the crayfishes and Spanish lobsters in the waters of the arc of the Petites Antilles.

Le pêcheur. auquel on demande de fournir 10 kilos de langoustes, les capture rapidement au collet de laiton ou au crochet sous les cayes, Certains artisans rassemblent les crustacés dans de grandes nasses rectangulaires de grillage métallique, appelées « gardes », en attendant l'acheteur éventuel. Il n'existe pas de type de casier spécial à cette pêche, alors que les vanniers créoles se sont ingéniés, par exemple, à créer des engins compliqués et difficiles à construire pour capturer les petites murènes appelées « moringues » qui n'ont pourtant que peu de valeur commerciale. Il est donc impossible de se faire une idée précise de l'importance du stock de gros crustacés exploitable en se basant sur les apports des pêcheurs créoles. Si les rendements de certains langoustiers douarnenistes, travaillant au filet mauritanien sur les bancs de St-Martin, ont pu être considérés comme extrêmement satisfaisants, il n'en est pas de même à propos d'autres tentatives. Il y a là toute une étude à entreprendre. Cette note n'est que le début d'un travail concernant l'histoire naturelle des langoustes et scyllares des eaux de l'arc des Petites Antilles. BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of family history of cancer and personal history of other medical conditions in the aetiology of the oral cavity cancer in France. METHODS: We used data from 689 cases of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma and 3481 controls included in a population-based case--control study, the ICARE study. Odds-ratios (ORs) associated with family history of cancer and personal medical conditions and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were estimated by unconditional logistic regression and were adjusted for age, gender, area of residence, education, body mass index, tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking. RESULTS: Personal history of oral candidiasis was related to a significantly increased risk of oral cavity cancer (OR 5.0, 95% CI 2.1-12.1). History of head and neck cancers among the first-degree relatives was associated with an OR of 1.9 (95% CI 1.2-2.8). The risk increased with the number of first-degree relatives with head and neck cancer. CONCLUSION: A family history of head and neck cancer is a marker of an increased risk of oral cavity cancer and should be taken into account to target prevention efforts and screening. Further studies are needed to clarify the association between oral cavity cancer and personal history of candidiasis.
