Résumé : We studied relationships between tropical tunas (albacore (Thunnus alalunga), bigeye (Thunnus obesus), and yellowfin (Thunnus albacares)) and their biotic and abiotic environments through simultaneous acoustic observations of tunas and their prey, experimental longline catch, and oceanographic data in French Polynesia. Vertical habitat limits were estimated based on temperature and dissolved oxygen at capture data. We then studied tuna-micronekton relationships to better understand how tuna occupy the pelagic space, At a regional scale, tunas were more abundant in areas rich in prey with favourable hydrological conditions. Inside such areas, at the scale of a longline set, however, the longline catches were maximal only when prey were not distributed in dense patches (except for yellowfin tuna). We interpreted this result by considering that areas with high prey abundance attract tunas, but at a small scale, if prey are patchy distributed, tunas are more inclined to feed on them rather than on longline baits. The effect of patches on yellowfin tuna catch per unit effort (CPUE) does not appear likely because this species also feeds on the mixed layer, where patch density was very low. Not only hydrological characteristics, but also prey density and prey patch characteristics, should be taken into account for interpreting longline CPUE data.
Thunnus obesus, et thon à nageoires jaunes, Thunnus albacares) à leurs environnements biotique et abiotique. Pour ce faire, nous avons réalisé simultanément, en Polynésie Française, des observations acoustiques des thons et de leurs proies, des pêches à l'aide d'une palangre instrumentée et des mesures hydrologiques. Des limites d'habitat vertical des thons calculées sur la base de données de température et d'oxygène dissous sont proposées. Nous étudions ensuite les relations thons-micronecton afin de mieux comprendre la stratégie d'occupation de l'espace des thons. A une échelle régionale, les thons sont plus abondants dans des zones riches en proies avec des conditions hydrologiques favorables. Cependant, à l'intérieur de telles zones, les captures sont maximales lorsque les proies ne sont pas distribuées sous forme de patchs (sauf pour le thon à nageoires jaunes). Nous interprétons ces résultats en considérant que les zones de fortes abondances en proies attirent les thons mais, qu'à une échelle fine, si les proies sont distribuées sous la forme de patchs denses, les thons s'en nourrissent préférentiellement, au détriment des appâts de la palangre. Ces patchs ne semblent pas influencer les prises par unité d'effort (PUE) des thons à nageoires jaunes, probablement parce que cette espèce se nourrit également dans la couche homogène où la densité en patchs est très faible. Les caractéristiques hydrologiques, mais également la densité en proies et leur type de distribution, devraient donc être pris en compte pour l'interprétation des données de PUE.

Résumé : Universal kriging was used to model the spatio-temporal variability in the acoustic density of tuna aggregations recorded during star echosounding surveys around moored fish aggregating devices (FADs) in Martinique (Lesser Antilles). The large-scale deterministic drift in the tuna spatial distribution was modeled using an advection-diffusion equation applied to animal grouping. Residuals from the drift were modeled as a random component with small-scale spatial correlation. An estimation variance formula was derived from this deterministic-statistical mixed model to assess the mean precision of density estimates of daytime tuna aggregation. The mean relative error obtained with our star design for daytime surveys was 24%. The methodology was applied to estimate daily maxima of tuna biomass around moored FADs during four monthly sea cruises. The daily peak of tuna biomass aggregated around moored FADs was 9 t on average (standard deviation = 4). Estimation variances for different survey designs were compared for optimizing sampling strategy.
La distribution spatiale d'agrégations de thons autour de dispositifs de concentration de poissons (DCP) ancrés a été étudiée en Martinique (Petites Antilles) au moyen de parcours acoustiques en étoile. Les densités acoustiques géoréférencées attribuées aux thons ont été analysées à l'aide d'un modèle de krigeage universel. Une tendance à large échelle a été identifiée dans la distribution spatiale des thons. Cette tendance a été modélisée de façon déterministe au moyen d'une équation d'advection–diffusion appliquée aux groupes d'animaux. Les résidus de la tendance ont été modélisés comme une composante aléatoire du modèle, spatialement corrélée à faible échelle. De ce modèle, qui contenant une composante déterministe et une composante statistique, a été déduite une formule permettant de calculer la variance d'estimation de la densité diurne moyenne de l'agrégation de thons autour des DCP. L'erreur relative moyenne commise sur l'estimation de la densité de thons lors d'un parcours en étoile diurne a été estimée à 24 %. Cette méthode a été appliquée afin d'estimer les maxima journaliers de biomasse de l'agrégation de thons observés lors de quatre campagnes en mer mensuelles successives autour des DCP ancrés. La biomasse maximale de thons agrégée autour des DCP ancrés durant une phase diurne était en moyenne de 9 t (écart type : 4). Les variances d'estimation obtenues avec différents parcours acoustiques ont été comparées afin d'optimiser la stratégie d'échantillonnage.

Résumé : Molecular, cytological, and morphological data support the existence of a hybrid population between Schoenus nigricans and Schoenus ferrugineus. This population was found in northeastern Italy, where S. nigricans is central with respect to its natural range and S. ferrugineus is marginal, being most common in the Alps and in central and northern Europe. Molecular marker data show that the putative hybrid population is genetically intermediate between nearby populations of the parent species. Cytological evidence confirmed the hybrid nature of this population, as does the almost complete sterility of plants within the population. Although no seeds were produced by the hybrid population, some possibly fertile pollen grains were produced; this suggests that the possibility of introgression between the two species through the hybrids cannot completely be excluded.

Résumé : In self-feeding conditions, a few individual sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax (L., 1758)) display strong activity in striking the food dispenser, whereas the remaining individuals of the group actuate the feeder weakly or never. Here, we investigated the effects of removal of the individuals showing dominant activity on the social and feeding behaviours in groups of juvenile sea bass. Following removal, new fish showing a dominant self-feeding activity quickly appear. They always come from the group of fish that have a low number of triggering actuations. This observation shows that it takes less time, about 5 days after the removal of dominant triggerers vs. 14 days at the beginning, for the re-establishment of the behavioural structure, suggesting the possibility of social transmission between individuals. The fish that show weak triggering activity seem to reach the high-food triggering level without obvious signs of competition. This experiment reveals the importance of the food-demand behavioural structure: the fish displaying the highest activity lead to a general food distribution and play a dominant role in feeding the entire group. Functional plasticity in this role within individuals is also demonstrated, indicating that the high-triggering function is essential for the group and not for the individual themselves.
Au sein d'un groupe de bars (Dicentrarchus labrax (L., 1758)) placés en auto-nourrissage, quelques individus disposent d'une activité forte de déclenchement volontaire du distributeur d'aliments. Les autres poissons du groupe disposent d'une activité de demande faible voire nulle. Ici, nous avons étudié l'impact du retrait des poissons à forte activité sur le comportement alimentaire et social de groupes de bars juvéniles. De nouveaux individus à forte activité réapparaissent rapidement, provenant exclusivement de la classe de poissons de faible demande. Cinq jours en moyenne suffisent après le retrait, contre 14 jours au début de l'expérience, pour que la structure comportementale se rétablisse suggérant l'existence d'une transmission sociale entre les individus. Ces poissons de faible activité semblent de plus atteindre leur nouvelle fonction sans aucun signe de compétition. Cette expérience révèle d'abord l'importance de la structure de la demande alimentaire puisqu'elle réapparaît après le retrait. Elle montre également que l'activité des forts manipulateurs conduit à une distribution générale de l'aliment et contribue à nourrir le groupe en entier. L'étude montre enfin une plasticité fonctionnelle indiquant que seule la fonction de manipulateur fort est essentiel pour la stabilité du groupe, non l'identité des individus par elle-même.

Résumé : We develop a spatially and seasonally explicit bioeconomic model with three fleet dynamics processes built in endogenously. The model has been applied to the large French trawlers harvesting a medium-depth demersal stock, North Sea saithe (i.e., pollock, Pollachius virens), and a mix of deepwater species over a 10-year period (1999-2008), and the predictions have been contrasted with observations. The best overall fit was achieved where effort allocation was determined to be 80% by traditions and 20% by economic opportunism and where harvest efficiency increased by 8% a year. With this fleet dynamics parameterization, annual trends in fishing effort and profit were well reproduced by the model over the whole time period. Time series of the observed fishing effort by metier were generally well fitted by the model over the period 1999-2003, but less so over 2004-2008. The model also reasonably reproduced the catches by species over most of the time series, except for black scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo).
Nous développons un modèle bio-économique spatial et saisonnier dans lequel trois processus caractérisant la dynamique des flottilles sont décrits de manière explicite. Ce modèle a été appliqué aux grands chalutiers français exploitant le lieu noir de mer du Nord (Pollachius virens) et une variété d'espèces profondes au cours d'une période de 10 ans (1999–2008), et les prévisions ont été contrastées avec les observations. Le meilleur ajustement est obtenu lorsque l'allocation de l'effort de pêche est déterminée a` hauteur de 80% par les traditions et 20% par l'opportunisme économique, et lorsque l'augmentation de l'efficacité de pêche est d'environ 8% par an. En paramétrant ainsi le module de dynamique des flottilles, les tendances annuelles de l'effort de pêche et du profit sont bien reproduites par le modèle sur l'ensemble de la période. Les variations temporelles de l'effort de pêche par métier sont généralement bien prises en compte sur la période 1999–2003, mais non sur la période 2004–2008. Le modèle ajuste les captures raisonnablement sur la plus grande partie de la période d'étude, pour toutes les espèces sauf le sabre noir (Aphanopus carbo).

Résumé : Examining the genetic structure of species allows an estimate of the level of evolutionary connectivity between localities; this information is important for marine biodiversity protection, in particular, for the delineation of marine protected areas. In this context, a total of 601 Lutjanus kasmira (Forsskal, 1775) were sampled in 16 localities of the western Indian Ocean and analyzed with both mitochondrial cytochrome b sequencing and eight microsatellite loci genotyping. Both genetic markers indicate that differentiation was not significant even between samples separated by more than 4000 km. This absence of genetic differentiation among samples was favored by ecological plasticity of the species and is now ensured by resultant high levels of dispersal. Nevertheless, some significant genetic structure was detected for the areas of Mauritius and Moroni, as well as within populations in all localities, which will have to be explained by additional studies on local processes.
