Université des Antilles Description : The Chemical Purification, analysis and Screening core laboratories (CPAS) are located at the University of South Florida campus in Tampa. This core offers instrumentation and expertise in fractionation, purification, and various chemical analyses to support synthetic and natural products drug discovery research groups. Our main equipment are dedicated to chromatographic separation and purification (MPLC, HPLC) and mass-spectrometry for analytic detection, quantification and identification (LC-MS SQ, QqQ and QToF). The CPAS services also include Circular Dichroism spectrometry, general spectroscopic characterization (UV, FTIR), lyophilization (bench top and high capacity freeze-dryers), synthesis (microwave reactor), ADME screening (permeability and drug solubility testing), and high-throughput screening development capability (automated liquid handler and multimode plate reader). An example of three significant studies will be presented at the conference to illustrate the CPAS core facility services: 1) Identification of new bioactive compounds from mangrove endophytic fungi as potential alternatives to malaria drug resistance, 2) Myricanol isolated from Bayberry (Myrica Cerifera) and its synthetic derivatives targeting the microtubuleassociated protein tau accumulation in the Alzheimer's disease and 3) New ent-labdane diterpenes with solid tumor cell lines antiproliferative properties from the endemic plant Eupatorium obtusissmum from the island of Hispaniola. The core provides research lab training workshops in advanced technology and assistance so users can operate any instruments available in the laboratories to successfully accomplish their analyses and research projects. INRA, CFCS Description : Mulch application of Sargassum seaweed (Sargassum spp.) to soil can help to reduce beach contamination in the Caribbean Region while providing beneficial horticultural effects. This study investigated the effects of fresh Sargassum mulch on soil properties and plant growth in a test crop of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. â? ? HA 3019â? TM). Fresh Sargassum material (washed and unwashed) was applied as mulches (0, 5 and 8cm thick) to small field plots one week after transplanting of 3-week-old seedlings. The mulch material was raked away from the plots after three weeks exposure. Observations on soil moisture, electrical conductivity, pH and biological activity, and plant growth were made at 1 to 2-week intervals over a 6-week period with additional soil measurements after 10 weeks. Soil biological activity (respiration) was increased by the Sargassum mulch with values being similar for the 5cm and 8cm mulch layers. Soil moisture content, pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were increased as the mulch layer increased and EC values were only marginally reduced by Sargassum washing. An increase in plant growth compared to the control treatment was noted only in the washed Sargassum treatments. Potential benefits of Sargassum seaweed mulches on soil properties and plant growth can be nullified due to soil salinization effects. L. M. Éditeur(s) : Inter-research Résumé : Environmental conditions experienced by aquatic organisms are archived in biogenic carbonates such as fish otoliths, bivalve shells and coral skeletons. These calcified structures present an accretionary growth and variations in optical properties - color or opacity - that are used to reconstruct time. Full and reliable exploitation of the information extracted from these structures is, however, often limited as the metabolic processes that control their growth and their optical properties are poorly understood. Here, we propose a new modeling framework that couples both the growth of a biogenic carbonate and its optical properties with the metabolism of the organism. The model relies on well-tested properties of Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory. It is applied to otoliths of the Bay of Biscay anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) for which a DEB model has been previously developed. The model reproduces well-known otolith patterns and thus provides us with mechanisms for the metabolic control of otolith size and opacity at the scale of an individual lifespan. Two original contributions using this framework are demonstrated. First, the model can be used to reconstruct the temporal variations in the food assimilated by an individual fish. Reconstructing food conditions of past and present aquatic species in their natural environment is key ecological information to better understand population dynamics. Second, we show that non-seasonal checks can be discriminated from seasonal checks, which is a well-recognized problem when interpreting fish otoliths. We discuss further developments of the model and the experimental settings required to test this new promising framework. Prenant appui sur des travaux antérieurs en génération de texte (Vaillant, 1997), nous utilisons un formalisme de grammaires d'unification, les grammaires d'adjonction d'arbres (TAG d'après l'acronyme anglais), ainsi qu'une modélisation de catégories lexicales fonctionnelles à base syntaxico-sémantique, pour mettre en oeuvre une grammaire du créole martiniquais utilisable dans une maquette de système de génération automatique. L'un des intérêts principaux de ce système pourrait être son utilisation comme logiciel outil pour l'aide à l'apprentissage du créole en tant que langue seconde. Waterborne nickel bioaccumulation in Gammarus pulex: Comparison of mechanistic models and influence of water cationic composition Auteur(s) : Lebrun, Jeremie D. However, in order to construct these models, the accumulation strategies have to be defined for each metal/organism couple in controlled conditions. This study aims at modelling the waterborne bioaccumulation of Ni and the influence of the water's geochemical properties on this process in a crustacean that is widely distributed in Europe, Gammarus pulex. In the laboratory, G. pulex was exposed to several Ni concentrations (from 0.001 to 100 mg L(-1)) in aquatic microcosms. Our results show that G. pulex is very tolerant to Ni (LC50(48 h) = 477 mg L(-1) Ni). Time course experiments enabled the construction of a biodynamic model by determining the uptake (k(u)) and elimination (k(e)) rate constants. When the exposure concentration exceeded 1 mg L(-1) Ni, the metal uptake reached a maximum due to a limited number of binding sites for Ni. Therefore, the organism's maximal capacity to accumulate the metal (B(max)) and the half-saturation constant (K) were determined to establish the saturation model. We showed that the two models are comparable for the lowest exposure concentrations (<1 mg L(-1) Ni), with k(u)/k(e) = B(max)/K. Then, the bioaccumulation of Ni was recorded in waters exhibiting various concentrations of three major ions (Na(+), Mg(2+) and Ca(2+)). Only Ca had an inhibitory effect on the Ni uptake. This study reports for the first time the bioaccumulation of Ni in G. pulex. Because of its high tolerance to Ni and its high capacity to accumulate this metal, this crustacean could be used as an indicator of Ni bioavailability in freshwaters. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Micrometric scale magnetite was magnetically reduced and divided into distinct size ranges: 85-56 mu m, 56-30 mu m, 30-22 mu m, 22-15 mu m, 15-10 mu m, 10-7 mu m and 7-2 mu m. Nanometric-scale magnetite in the size range 2-14 nm was identified. The magnetite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmitted and reflected light microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high angle annular dark field, Mossbauer spectroscopy and its magnetic properties. Crystallographic identification of nanostructures Was performed using high-resolution TEM. Characteristic changes were observed when the particles make the size transition from micro- to nanometric sizes, as follows: (1) frequency-dependent magnetic Susceptibility percentage (chi FD%) measurements Show high Values (13%) for the 2-14 nm fractions attributed to dominant fractions of superparamagnetic particles; (2) variations of chi FD% < 4.5% in fractions of 56-0.2 mu m occur in association with the presence of microparticles formed by magnetite aggregates of nanoparticles (< 15 nm) embedded in berthierine; (3) Mossbauer spectroscopy results identified a superparamagnetic fraction; (4) nanometric and 0.2-3 mu m grain size magnetite particles require a magnetic field up to 152 mT to reach saturation during the isothermal remanent magnetization experiment; (5) coercivity and remanent magnetization of the magnetite increase when the particle size decreases, probably due to parallel Coupling effects; (6) two-magnetic Susceptibility versus temperature experiments of the same 2-14 nm sample show that the reversibility during the second heating is due to the formation of new magnetite nanoparticles and growth of those already present. during the first heating process. Plant brought the railroad to Tampa in 1884, he opened the door for many businesses to locate and flourish here. The railroad was at the center of the city's economy. From downtown it went to Port Tampa where one could board a Plant steamship to Jamaica, Cuba, New Orleans, Bermuda or other destinations. A spur of the rail line brought the train up to the west front of the hotel so guests could depart the train and walk directly into the lobby.
The Tampa Bay Hotel cost approximately 2.5 million dollars to build and $500,000 to furnish. Consisting of 511 rooms, some of which were suites of 3-7 rooms, it provided a degree of luxury never before seen in Tampa. Most of the rooms had their own baths and all had electricity and telephones. In addition, guests were surrounded by a varied collection of furniture, porcelains, Venetian-style mirrors, and sculptures gathered by Mr. and Mrs. Plant in their travels in Europe.
The Tampa Bay Hotel opened in 1891 amid wide fanfare and celebration. Henry Plant's dream was now a reality. The newspapers of the day described it as "brightly illuminated, filled with sumptuous decorations, thrilling music and graced with turrets, domes and minarets towering heavenward and
glistening in the sun." It was a Victorian palace.
The hotel was a lively place with balls, tea parties, and organized hunts during the winter social season. It was open seasonally from December to April in the 1890's. Once a guest arrived at the hotel, he needed to be entertained. Guests went wild game hunting as well as fresh and salt-water fishing. Water sports were also included like sailing, rowing, and canoeing. For the less adventuresome, there were bicycles, carriages, and rickshaws to ride you around the property. The property was once a great house and estate owned by John Shaw which was used for sugar cane production. The estate was purchased by the Pringle family in the early twentieth century. In 1923, the great house was converted into a hotel. Later, Pringle left the property to his daughter Flora McKenzie Pringle Stewart, who cultivated its botanical gardens. "I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet" was a boutique store in London during the 1960s, which sold secondhand uniforms and military memorabilia. This image also features the store’s memorable sign which was inspired by the famous 1914 military recruitment poster designed by Alfred Leete. The sign and poster features Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener, then Secretary of State for War, pointing at the viewer with the words “Your Country Needs You.” However, this store's sign also features the Union Jack flag behind Lord Kitchener’s image. According CAIPO, The Bornn Bay Rum Co. was registered in Barbados on September 3, 1940. It was a subsidiary of the Bornn Distilling Co. of New York. The Churchill Building currently stands on the site of the former Adderley building which was purchased by the Bahamian government through the Adderley Property Purchase Loan Act of 1963. The Churchill Building was built in the early 1960s. The Adderley Building, pictured, houses the Tourism Information office and the John F. McCarthy Real Estate Insurance company. The building is located on the south side of Rawson Square which sits on the corner of Bay and East streets. Tourists are driving down Bay Street in a surrey, a horse-drawn door-less, four-wheeled carriage with two seats. Grammaires factorisées pour des dialectes apparentés Auteur(s) : Vaillant, Pascal Résumé : Pour la formalisation du lexique et de la grammaire de dialectes étroitement apparentés, il peut se révéler utile de factoriser une partie du travail de modélisation. Les soussystèmes linguistiques isomorphes dans les différents dialectes peuvent alors faire l’objet d’une description commune, les différences étant spécifiées par ailleurs. Cette démarche aboutit à un modèle de grammaire à couches : le noyau est commun à la famille de dialectes, et une couche superficielle détermine les caractéristiques de chacun. Nous appliquons ce procédé à la famille des langues créoles à base lexicale française de l’aire américano-caraïbe. The task of writing formal lexicons and grammars for closely related dialects can benefit from factoring part of the modelling. Isomorphic linguistic subsystems from the different dialectsmay have a common description, while the differences are specified aside. This process leads to a layered grammar model: a kernel common to the whole family of dialects, and a superficial skin specifying the particular properties of each one of them. Boats fill the Hillsbourough River in front of the Plant Park and the Tampa Bay Hotel. Auteur(s) : Burgert Brothers, 1917- ( Photographer ) Résumé : When Henry B. Plant brought the railroad to Tampa in 1884, he opened the door for many businesses to locate and flourish here. The railroad was at the center of the city's economy. From downtown it went to Port Tampa where one could board a Plant steamship to Jamaica, Cuba, New Orleans, Bermuda or other destinations. A spur of the rail line brought the train up to the west front of the hotel so guests could depart the train and walk directly into the lobby.
The Tampa Bay Hotel cost approximately 2.5 million dollars to build and $500,000 to furnish. Consisting of 511 rooms, some of which were suites of 3-7 rooms, it provided a degree of luxury never before seen in Tampa. Most of the rooms had their own baths and all had electricity and telephones. In addition, guests were surrounded by a varied collection of furniture, porcelains, Venetian-style mirrors, and sculptures gathered by Mr. and Mrs. Plant in their travels in Europe.
The Tampa Bay Hotel opened in 1891 amid wide fanfare and celebration. Henry Plant's dream was now a reality. The newspapers of the day described it as "brightly illuminated, filled with sumptuous decorations, thrilling music and graced with turrets, domes and minarets towering heavenward and
glistening in the sun." It was a Victorian palace.
The hotel was a lively place with balls, tea parties, and organized hunts during the winter social season. It was open seasonally from December to April in the 1890's. Once a guest arrived at the hotel, he needed to be entertained. Guests went wild game hunting as well as fresh and salt-water fishing. Water sports were also included like sailing, rowing, and canoeing. For the less adventuresome, there were bicycles, carriages, and rickshaws to ride you around the property. Lieu ouvert ou lieu fermé, flux concentré ou flux diffus, la nature du lieu touristique, avec ses pratiques, classiques ou originales, oriente les types d’impacts potentiels. Les choix opérés en matière d’aménagement touristique sont donc primordiaux : dans quelles conditions opte-t-on pour un tourisme balnéaire classique, massif, ou pour une approche touristique alternative ? Ces différentes déclinaisons sont-elles attachées à des territoires spécifiques ? Faut-il opposer ces deux approches ou les considérer complémentaires dans leurs environnements respectifs, peuvent-elles partager un même espace ? L’objectif de ce numéro thématique est de réunir des approches diverses et renouvelées qui développent des analyses sous l’angle de l’économie, de l’aménagement du territoire, de la sociologie, de la géographie… Les articles pourront proposer une réflexion théorique ou privilégier des études de cas, traitant des relations tourisme de masse – tourisme alternatif ou s’attachant à illustrer l’une de ces deux aspects. Les terrains privilégiés ne seront pas exclusivement caribéens et américains, ils pourront relever de n’importe quelle région du monde et illustrer des situations présentes et/ou passées. Les thématiques privilégiées seront : 1. Les concepts de tourisme de masse et de tourisme alternatif (identification, caractéristiques, logiques spatiales, enjeux économiques, sociaux, environnementaux). 2. Les lieux du tourisme masse (stations balnéaires, villes historiques, formes spécifiques d’aménagement des lieux et les types de structures d’accueil) 3. Alter-tourismes et renouvellement des pratiques touristiques (écotourisme, tourisme communautaire, agrotourisme …) 4. L’aménagement des lieux touristiques et les modalités de gestion des environnements protégés (conservation, protection et pratiques touristiques et récréatives) 5. Les enjeux économiques, sociaux, environnementaux autour de différents types de lieux touristiques. This issue of the Revue Etudes Caribéennes, devoted to tourism, aims to lay the foundations of a reflection on the functioning tourist places, their development programs and the different challenges presented to them. Exposed/Open or closed location, concentrated or diffused flows, the nature of these tourist places with their traditional or original customs, orientate different types of potential impacts. The choices made in tourism development are essential: in which conditions should be opted for the traditional seaside tourism, or for mass tourism, or for alternative tourism? Are certain properties linked to specific territories? Should we oppose these two approaches or consider them as complementary in their environments and can they share the same place? The objective of this thematic issue is to call for various and renewed approaches which develop analysis in terms of the economy, regional planning, sociology, geography etc. Articles may propose a theoretical reflection or focus on case studies, dealing with the relations of mass tourism, alternative tourism, or to illustrate one of these two aspects. Priorities fields will not exclusively be Caribbean and American but can come from any part of the world and can illustrate post and/or present situations. The prioritized analysis will include: 1. The concepts of mass tourism and alternative tourism (identification, characteristics, spatial logics, and economic, social and environmental issues). 2. Places of mass tourism (resorts, historic cities, specific forms of site layout and reception facilities) 3. Alter-tourism and the renewal of tourism practices (ecotourism, community tourism, agrotourism) 4. The development of tourist spots and of management methods concerning protected environments (conservation, protection, tourism practices and recreational practices) 5. Economic, social, and environmental issues surrounding different types of tourist places. Este número de la Revista Estudios Caribeños consagrado al turismo apunta a poner las bases de una reflexión sobre el funcionamiento de los lugares turísticos, los programas de ordenación turística y las diferentes apuestas para los territorios. Lugar abierto o cerrado, flujos concentrados o flujos difusos, la naturaleza del lugar turístico, con sus prácticas, clásicas u originales, orienta los tipos de impactos potenciales. Las elecciones operadas en materia de ordenación turística son primordiales: ¿en qué condiciones se opta por un turismo balneario clásico, masivo, o por un enfoque turístico alternativo? ¿Estas diferentes declinaciones están relacionadas a territorios específicos? ¿Se debe oponer estos dos enfoques o considerarlos complementarios en sus ambientes respectivos, pueden compartir el mismo espacio? El objetivo de este número temático es de reunir los diversos y renovados enfoques que desarrollan los análisis sobre el ángulo de la economía, la ordenación del territorio, la sociología, la geografía… Los artículos podrán proponer una reflexión teórica o privilegiar los estudios prácticos, tratando las relaciones turismo de masa-turismo alternativo o dirigirse a ilustrar uno de estos dos aspectos. Los terrenos privilegiados no serán exclusivamente caribeños y americanos, podrán hacer frente a cualquier región del mundo e ilustrar situaciones presentes y/o pasadas.
