Résumé : The essential characteristics of the vegetation dynamics of tropical Africa remain only partially known. This study assesses the succession of vegetation-types over Central Africa during the last two glacial/interglacial cycles. Analysis of core KZai 02, which contains pollen from the Zaire River watershed (latitudes 9°N-13°S), allows the investigation of long-term patterns of plant ecosystem development and their climatic causes. Core KZai 02 (18.20 m long) was recovered from 6°24.20′S/9°54.10′E in the uppermost axial edifice of the Zaire deep sea fan. The chronology of this sedimentary archive was established using nannofossils and correlations of pollen and total organic carbon signals with the nearby core GeoB1008. The pollen record indicates that: (i) glacials (MIS 6, 4, 2) are marked by the development of afromontane (Podocarpus) forest at high altitudes when central basin lowlands were occupied by Cyperaceae marshes and savannah; (ii) during interglacials (MIS 1, 5) lowland forests were developed, marked by the successive expansion of pioneer, warm-temperate, rain forests, and mangrove indicating sea-level rise; (iii) glacial-interglacial transitions (MIS 6/5, 2/1) display similar vegetation dynamics. The strong evidence of afromontane forest and the opening of the vegetation during glacials suggest a reduced latitudinal distribution of rainfall by the strengthening of the trade wind system. West African monsoon systems were enhanced during interglacials, allowing the progressive development of lowland forests. The development of rain and pioneer forests during glacial Heinrich stadials suggests an enhancement of water availability in tropical Africa associated with these high latitude events. However, no augmentation of wind activity, described by previous studies, is evidenced by our pollen record. Similar vegetation successions during glacial/interglacial transitions suggest the diachronous and stepped intervention of CO2 (emphasizing the influence of temperature on plant ecosystems) and water availability.

Résumé : Disentangling the impact of landscape features such as rivers and historical events on dispersal is a challenging but necessary task to gain a comprehensive picture of the evolution of diverse biota such as that found in Amazonia. Adenomera andreae, a small, territorial, terrestrial frog species of the Amazonian forest represents a good model for such studies. We combined cytochrome b sequences with 12 microsatellites to investigate the genetic structure at two contrasted spatial scales in French Guiana: along a similar to 6-km transect, to evaluate dispersal ability, and between paired bank populations along a similar to 65-km stretch of the Approuague river, to test the effect of rivers as barriers to dispersal. We observed significant spatial genetic structure between individuals at a remarkably small geographical scale, and conclude that the species has a restricted dispersal ability that is probably tied to its life-history traits. Mitochondrial and microsatellite data also indicate a high level of differentiation among populations on opposite banks of the river, and, in some cases, among populations on the same riverbank. These results suggest that the observed population structure in A. andreae is the result of restricted dispersal abilities combined with the action of rivers and Quaternary population isolation. Given that Amazonia hosts a great portion of anurans, as well as other small vertebrates, that display life-history traits comparable with A. andreae, we argue that our analyses provide new insights into the complex interactions among evolutionary processes shaping Amazonian biodiversity. Résumé : Les grands domaines naturels, rattachés aux diverses stations de villégiature, étaient dépositaires des meilleurs lacs à truites, d’immenses territoires de sauvagine, de cerf de Virginie et d’un grand nombre de rivières à saumon. Si le littoral et la montagne ont agi comme attracteurs dans le cas de la villégiature, il en a été autrement pour les clubs de chasse et de pêche, qui sont apparus au milieu du XIXe siècle et se sont multipliés à compter de 1885. En l’occurrence, la mécanique à l’œuvre semble avoir posé la « grande nature » comme visée territoriale et le « coureur des bois » comme figure emblématique du héros romantique. L’argument développé dans cet article va s’employer à montrer que le tourisme et la villégiature ont constitué au Québec des procédures de valorisation positionnelle de nature géoanthropologique. Le « clubage » des Laurentides, au sens large du terme, aura constitué en ce sens le présupposé de leur colonisation intérieure. Qu’il s’agisse du lac Saint-Jean, de la Mauricie ou des Laurentides en général, on retrouve l’efficacité du parcours structural de l’établissement humain développé en géographie structurale : l’occupation utilitaire d’un territoire disponible présuppose non pas d’abord une transformation de la nature, mais une valorisation des positions abstraites par le tourisme et la villégiature.

Résumé : Question: To establish a habitat classification based on functional group co-occurrence that may help the drawing up of conservation plans. Location: Riverine forest fragments in the Grand-duché de Luxembourg, Europe. Methods: Forest fragments were surveyed for their abundance of vascular plants. These were clustered into emergent groups according to 14 life-traits related 10 plant dispersal, establishment and persistence. Forest fragments were classified according to similar distribution of the identified emergent groups. Environmental factors were related to the emergent group richness in each forest type using generalized linear models. Results: Contrary to former species centred classification, only two groups of forests, each with clearly different emergent group composition and conservation requirements. Were detected: (1) swamp forests characterized by anemogamous perennials, annuals and hydrochorous perennials and (2) moist forests characterized by barochorous perennials, small geophytes and zoochorous phanerophytes. From a conservation point of view, priority should he given to large swamp forest with intact flooding regimes his is in accordance with the high wind and water dispersal capacities of their typical emergent groups. For the moist forests. conservation priorities should he high forest connectivity and historical continuity since dispersal and establishment of their characteristic emergent groups arc highly limited. Conclusions: The described methodology, situated at an intermediate integration level between the individual species and whole community descriptors. takes advantage of both conservation plans built for single species and the synthetic power of bread ecological measures.

UNLABELLED: ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major health issue in French Guiana. Amerindian communities remain the most affected. A previous study in Camopi highlighted the predominant role of environmental factors in the occurrence of malaria. However, all parameters involved in the transmission were not clearly identified. A new survey was conducted in order to clarify the risk factors for the presence of malaria cases in Camopi. METHODS: An open cohort of children under seven years of age was set up on the basis of biologically confirmed malaria cases for the period 2001-2009. Epidemiological and observational environmental data were collected using two structured questionnaires. Data were analysed with a multiple failures multivariate Cox model. The influence of climate and the river level on malaria incidence was evaluated by time-series analysis. Relationships between Anopheles darlingi human biting rates and malaria incidence rates were estimated using Spearman's rank correlation. RESULTS: The global annual incidence over the nine-year period was 238 per 1,000 for Plasmodium falciparum, 514 per 1,000 for Plasmodium visa and 21 per 1,000 for mixed infections. The multivariate survival analysis associated higher malaria incidence with living on the Camopi riverside vs. the Oyapock riverside, far from the centre of the Camopi hamlet, in a home with numerous occupants and going to sleep late. On the contrary, living in a house cleared of all vegetation within 50 m and at high distance of the forest were associated with a lower risk. Meteorological and hydrological characteristics appeared to be correlated with malaria incidence with different lags. Anopheles darlingi human biting rate was also positively correlated to incident malaria in children one month later. CONCLUSIONS: Malaria incidence in children remains high in young children despite the appearance of immunity in children around three years of age. The closeness environment but also the meteorological parameters play an important role in malaria transmission among children under seven years of age in Camopi.

ln French Guiana, the mangrove covers almost ail the coastline. It results original because of a dynamic influenced by the system of the amazon muds' dispersion. The coastline's variations are important and the mangrove growing there constitutes various facies. To understand the structure and dynamic of this forest, a test-site has been selected at the Kaw river's estuary. Field measurements of structure parameters permited to identify 3 major types of mangrove forests with different developement stages. Relations between the measured parameters show the facies'dynamic with a self-thinning phnomenon then a gap regeneration. Correlations between structure parameters and corresponding spectral parameters extracted from an IKONOS image have been tested. The use of texture indexes are discussed. Then, a classification of the image reveals the spatial distribution of the facies Parallely, the constitution of a temporal series from 1950 to 2001, base on various remote sensed datas, shows the evolution of the coastline and the associated mangrove. During this period, succeed accretion phases (1950-1981; 1991-2001) and erosion phase (1981-1991). A theorical ages map of the forest stands are also established. Relating with the facies map, it explains the complex evolution of limited Rhizophora zones. A comparison with Sinnamary test-site is made and futurs researches considered.
En Guyane française, la mangrove couvre l'essentiel du littoral. Elle tire son originalité d'une dynamique influencée par le système de dispersion des boues amazoniennes. Les variations de la ligne de côte sont alors importantes et les mangroves s'y développant constituent des faciès variés. Pour mieux comprendre la structure et la dynamique de ces mangroves, un site atelier a été choisi au niveau de l'estuaire de la rivière de Kaw. Les mesures sur le terrain de paramètres de structure des peuplements permettent d'identifier 3 grands types de forêt avec différents stades de développement. Des relations entre les différents paramètres mesurés mettent en évidence la dynamique de ces faciès, basée sur un phénomène d'auto-éclaircie puis une régénération par chablis. Un essai de corrélation entre paramètres de structure et paramètres spectraux correspondant sur une image IKONOS a été faite. L'apport des indices de texture est discuté. Une classification de l'image montre la distribution spatiale des faciès. Parallèlement, la reconstitution d'une série temporelle de 1950 à 2001 à partir de données de télédétection variées permet de suivre l'évolution de la côte et de la mangrove associée. Pendant cette période se succèdent phases d'accrétion (1950-1981 ; 1991-2001) et phase d'érosion (1981-1991). Une carte des âges théoriques des peuplements est également établie. Mise en relation avec la carte des faciès, elle explique notamment l'évolution complexe des zones limitées de mangrove à Rhizophora. Une comparaison avec le site de Sinnamary est faite et de futures recherches envisagées.
