THE CHILD, THE CREOLE AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN THE FRENCH WEST INDIES: A MULTI-FIELD APPROACH OF BILINGUALISM IN THE MOTOR LEARNING” ; « L'ENFANT, LE CREOLE ET L'EDUCATION PHYSIQUE ET SPORTIVE AUX ANTILLES FRANÇAISES : UNE APPROCHE PLURIDISCIPLINAIRE DU BILINGUISME DANS LES APPRENTISSAGES MOTEURS » Auteur(s) : Anciaux, Frédéric Auteurs secondaires : Adaptations au Climat Tropical, Exercice et Santé (ACTES) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Université des Antilles-Guyane Christian ALIN(christian.alin@iufm.univ-lyon1.fr) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : Does the language in which the instructions are formulat- ed affect the execution of a bilingual's motor task? The first experiment studies whether the language used for the instructions influences the motor performances among bilingual children in situation of learning. Eighty bilin-gual French/Creole children (age means 10.4) were distributed into two experimental groups to learn how to perform a motor task. One group received instructions in French and the other one in Creole. The data suggest that the language of presentation affects the execution of a motor task. Both groups had the same performance level at the beginning of the experiment. We noticed that the group taught in Creole obtained better performances than the group taught in French at the end of the learning situation. The results are discussed in terms of their implications to physical education and motor rehabilitation of bilinguals. The two following experiments reported in the present paper concern (i) the differential imagery value of French and Creole and (ii) the influence of language on the recall of sequences of patterned movements in a bilingual population. Creole words were obtained a higher imagery value than French words, certainly because Creole is an oral and vernacular language. Motor recall scores were better when the sequence was presented in Creole compared to French. The generation of visual images by Creole would facilitate the memorization and recall of new sequences of movements. The effect of language on imagery value of words and motor recall among bilingual French–Creole subjects was discussed in terms of nature of information encoding in each language. The goal of the fourt and last study tries to know the language impact on the movement imagery ability of guadeloupean children. A person is able to represent verbal information with an image (Denis, 1989; Paivio, 1986). The language can he influence this ability on bilingual individuals? If Creole has more to do with image than French (Michelot, 2000), this survey considers a distinct language influence on the mental images vividness specified by guadeloupean children. 123 secondary school pupils (average age 13.45) altogether accepted to fill in the Movement Imagery Questionnaire of Hall and Pongrac (1983). This test enables to measure the rapidity of visual and kinaesthetic images. The “Creole” group (59 children; average age 13. 43) got the MIQ translated in Creole and the “French” group (64 children; average age 13.46) the French version of the test. Finally, language does not generally influence the movement imagery capacity. Yet, the kinaesthetic images are more vivid in French than in Creole for the subjects tested, aged from 11 to 13. The subjects aged from 14 to 16 have, only in Creole, more vivid visual images than the subjects aged from 11 to 13. The language affects the movement imagery ability with age of this guadeloupean children.
According to the author, it’s impossible to consider the construction of the Europe of education without a real understanding of each member state particularities — for instance the status of regional languages. In the ultra-peripherical areas of Europe, mainly in the French overseas departments of America, because of their colonial past, the educational problem must be keenly approached. The ambition of this article aims to shed a light on the way the education project must be tackled in a special context of an irritating identity denial, in those areas, wrongly called, tropical Europe. National diploma vs local employability : a french paradox at work in Guadeloupe. Auteur(s) : ODACRE, Elisabeth Delcroix, Antoine Auteurs secondaires : Centre de recherches et de ressources en éducation et formation (CRREF) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) The Caribbean Academy of Sciences Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience The French education system remains highly centralized and only allows limited local adaptations for overseas territories. For example, if some laws (the last in 2013) allow the use of regional languages (e.g. Creole in the French West Indies) when they constitute a relevant contribution to the teaching, many official texts remain mainly based on the geographical, economical, historical, environment of the French mainland. We focus on some French BTS (Brevet de Technicien Supérieur / Advanced Technician Certificate), namely tourism and assistant manager, which are two important diplomas for the local development and in which microeconomic and management sciences plays a great part. The French BTS is a professional diploma prepared in two years after the “baccalauréat”, with national programs and evaluation criteria. The successful candidates are supposed to be immediately employable, especially in their local geographical environment. Thus, there exists a paradox between the national definition of the diploma and the local contexts of teaching. We discuss how teachers concretely deal with this situation on a day-to-day basis. Our hypothesis is that they act pragmatically, using their practical pedagogical content knowledge, without theoretical support for their action. In order to verify this hypothesis, we have conducted semi-structured interview with Guadeloupian teachers of the two aforementioned BTS. The main results shows that teachers adapt the national framework of the diploma, essentially by using local examples. This can be called a weak contextualization of the national texts. Indeed, these adaptations remain limited by fear of disadvantaging the students for the national exam. In addition, many context effects are shown, for example linked with local rules (concerning VAT, custom duties...) which are only partially taken into account by teachers. This demonstrates that the French educative system has not yet completely solved the opposition between national guideline and decentralization of the educational action. 19th General Meeting and Biennial Conference “Harnessing Science and Technology to create knowledge-base Economies and preserve Caribbean Ecosystems” Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago hal-01535045 https://hal.univ-antilles.fr/hal-01535045 | Partager |
Teaching of french as a language for integration for haïtians migrants in Guadalupe. From linguistic insecurity to contextual pedagogic tools. Now, the FLI concept controls the integration of foreigners in the french society by a transmission of french language and republican values. Our paper is about the questions coming from the West Indies context, specifically in Guadeloupe, and it is looking at the educational matters closed to Haitians natives' people. We are asking questions about the code switching phenomena and are trying to find, out of the blue, how some contextual specific experiments can help the students in being proud of their culture and in changing their vision of scholar and learning system. Feedback from those oral original sessions are aimed at offering solutions to establish a suitable teaching method named FLR. By occupying a privileged social space, traditional medicine and the diverses practices related to the field are less and less marginalized, more and more accepted as resources, thus society is gradually becoming more tolerant towards those practices. The social tolerance is relatively strong”. This perception of the present situation of traditional medicine and of its reception in society is proposed by M. Yoyo, French anthropologist and physician from Martinique. It speaks of the reality of traditional medicine in the west Indians context and highlights the positive affects on those who make use of it. The objective of this research is to explore the question of the transmission of medicinal knowledge within the confines of Martinique: transmission by traditionalists towards nonprofessionals as well as transmission among professionals in the fields of medicine. In other words, what learning, if any, still exists of this traditional knowledge faithfully kept by those practiced it? To what extent does the magical-religious experience influence the transmission of this knowledge? What is the role of the family in the education and the transmission of those practices? How much of this profane knowledge is accessible to all and to what extent is it practiced by families? Does the latter respond to the demands of traditional medicine? How do families proceed with the process of transmission. What contribution does the school make towards preserving this tradition ? The above questions provoke reflection on the medicinal practices of the people of Martinique and of the possible coexistence of traditional knowledge and modern or rational knowledge. These questions are inevitable if we want to progress with objectivity in the transmission of Creole medicine and of its preservation for future generations, as a form of safeguarding the memory of this therapeutic practice. However, they also help to focus on the level of its effectiveness and the potential importance that it represents in ensuring a healthy environment in the coming years. http://www.theses.fr/2015AGUY0865/document | Partager |
