The PNCR will allow its members to vote their conscience on the controversial Constitution (Amendment) Act of 2001 which seeks to prevent discrimination against persons on the basis of their sexual orientation and other grounds.
A number of religious organisations are opposed to the passage of the bill because it includes sexual orientation as one of the grounds. They are concerned that it could lead to a legalisation of homosexual relations and demands for recognition of gay marriages among other things.
PNCR Member of Parliament (MP) Vincent Alexander told a forum at the National Library on Saturday, that the Bill did not seek to legalise homosexuality, but to ensure that persons would not be discriminated against based on their sexual preferences.
He was one of two parliamentarians who showed up - the other being PNCR member, Myrna Peterkin.
The forum was organised by Students Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD), a group comprising fifteen students from the University of Guyana which was formed about two weeks ago.
Alexander expects the vote on the bill to come up before the National Assembly in a matter of months.
Paul Hardy, Leader of the Guyana Action Party (GAP), told Stabroek News that his party would not be using the so-called parliamentary whip. He added that GAP took a decision that every member should vote according to his or her own conscience. “We have no right to deny the rights of others based on sexual orientation. [The Bill] will guarantee rights to the homosexual.” GAP is in Parliament as part of an alliance with the Working People’s Alliance. GAP/WPA has two MPs.
The bill was met with rejection from some members of the religious community in 2001 and as a result of this, the President did not assent to it.
In a statement on Monday, the Central Islamic Organisa-tion of Guyana (CIOG) said that it stood in firm opposition to the Bill. The CIOG says the general purpose of the bill may be commendable and that the organisation’s objection is not based on a willingness to promote discrimination. Rather, the CIOG said, it was based on the fact that specific legal protection on the basis of sexual orientation without definition or qualification gives tacit legitimacy to practices which are considered criminal in Islam. “It is foreseeable that such a legal nod of approval (subtle as it may be) of these practices may pave the way for greater social (or even legal) acceptability in the future which, from the perspective of all Muslims including those in Guyana, is an undesirable and sinful outcome,” the CIOG statement said.
At Saturday’s event, Muslim teacher Moulana Mohamed Ali Zenjibari spoke of instances of abuse, discrimination and harsh penalties meted out to gay and lesbian persons in countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia and noted that the Quran did not sanction such punishments for homosexual behaviour.
President of the CIOG, Fazeel Ferouz told Stabroek News that a meeting to discuss a strategy with regards to the bill was planned for tomorrow with various religious groups.
Stabroek News tried to get a comment on the issue from the PPP/C but to no avail.
ROAR leader, Ravi Dev said that his party was now having discussions on the issue. ROAR feels that it is an important question which has to do with morality and should be discussed across the country. He added legislators had to be in tune with their constituents on the issue.
SASOD is lobbying for the legislation through the sensitisation of MPs.
Keimo Benjamin, a law student at UG, gave a presentation based on the jurisprudential aspects of the discussion on sexual orientation. He argued that morality should not be the only guiding principle on which to base the laws. Sexual activities between two consenting male adults in private could not be equated with a violation of a person’s rights, he said, making the point that the thrust of his presentation was not whether homosexuality was wrong, but whether it violated the rights of others. He said that the attitudes of some towards this subject were based on preconceived notions and prejudices. He cited studies to show that the suppression of certain perceived deviant sexual impulses in persons might do more harm than good. One Harvard University study of teens who said they were gay indicated that those teens were three times more likely to commit suicide.
Vidyaratha Kissoon, of Help and Shelter, in his contribution on Saturday, expressed his displeasure at the low turnout at the forum and urged the parliamentarians who showed up to take the message to their colleagues. He noted that because of homophobia, the numerical minority was terrified of speaking out against instances of discrimination. Gays and lesbians in Guyana were subjected to ridicule and abuse, and walk the streets at night not looking for sex necessarily, but for the companionship of persons who empathise with them.
During his presentation, Joel Simpson, another member of SASOD, outlined a number of changes made within national jurisdictions that had international implications. One such crucial change was South Africa’s 1996 adoption of a new constitution, making that country the first in the world to expressly include sexual orientation as a prohibited ground of discrimination. It was the first time a developing country had taken the lead with respect to the rights of sexual minorities.
He also said that according to Douglas Sanders, a Canadian jurist, the rights of homosexual, bisexual or transsexual men and women had never been officially recognised by the United Nations, despite the fact that international laws on the issue began to emerge at the close of the Second World War.
Simpson said that under Article 170 (5), as amended by Section 8 of the Constitution (Amendment) (No. 4) Act 2000, the President is required to assent to any bill which is returned by the National Assembly unaltered after a two-thirds majority within 90 days of its presentation to him. To the parliamentarians present, Simpson stressed that the onus was now on them to adequately represent their constituents which include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual Guyanese.

PEOPLE’S National Congress (PNC/R) Member of Parliament Mr. Vincent Alexander, said the Opposition will vote on “conscience” when the piece of legislation on sexual orientation is again brought before the National Assembly.
“With specific reference to my party, when this Bill gets back to the Parliament in the spirit of the arguments here, we will not use the `whip’. Our party will not say we have to vote for the provision (in the Sexual Orientation Bill). We will allow our members to vote as a matter of conscience,” he told participants gathered in the Conference Room of the National Library.
“We feel this is a matter of conscience. You may end up with a collective position but you have to deal with us individually,” Alexander said at a poorly attended public consultation aimed at gaining support for sexual orientation to be considered a fundamental right in Guyana.
Alexander, one of the main persons who sat on the Constitutional Reform Commission that addressed this controversial clause, said the legislation was not meant to legalise homosexual activities in Guyana.
“It was intended to ensure that persons who have an orientation - a way of thinking - which may or may not lead to a certain activity, to not be discriminated against, in terms of their rights,” he explained.
Alexander noted that very often, discussions on the sexual orientation provision in the Bill have led to seepages into other areas where debates centre on the “right to be homosexual.”
“I am saying the Bill does not comment on that… However, law is peculiar, especially in a Common Law system. Once you venture out and change the law, very often you open other windows which we cannot definitively say exist or does not exist in advance,” he said.
“The fear of some people is that the legislators might say one thing and the Courts will eventually say something else. While some people can’t argue against the law, per say, they will say this has opened a window of opportunity not meant to be opened. So, it is better to stay without a window than open it and then have a possibility of something you didn’t intend to happen - happening sometime in the future.”
Alexander added: “I want to say I’ve found this activity to have been rich from the perspective of the amount of research which was done by student (speakers). Without any comment as to whether I agree with the arguments, I would wish that much more research on other issues be done by students, and that at the University (of Guyana) students would find it convenient to have forums on other issues, with the same depth of research for their own intellectual development.”
Alexander and other Opposition M.P, Lurlene Nestor were the only three Parliamentarians in attendance at the session organised by the recently formed `Students Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination’ (SASOD), a group that has a membership of 15 mostly University of Guyana (UG) students from various faculties.
SASOD was established two weeks ago.
With the exception of members of the press, the consultation only managed to attract 11 persons, a handful of who were SASOD members.
While congratulating the students for an “insightful” presentation, Nestor pointed out that whether or not she chooses to agree with their position is “another issue” and she is entitled to her “own view”.
“The issue of sexual orientation is very `toucheous’ …while we agree with the human rights provisions and all that as a society, we must also revert to our own society. Some of the very critical questions that I would want to ask is whether or not at the society (level) we are ready for that kind of thing,” she remarked.
“We cannot, at (any) time, ignore the religious groups in our society. If we look at statistics going back to 1992 from a survey done by the Bureau of Statistics, we would see that a small section of the Guyanese population might be considered as people who do not subscribe to a religious view. While the laws are not necessarily based on moral values, we must acknowledge the fact that we might want to revert to many of the cases that (concern) laws that protect public morality.”
Nestor told the speakers at the consultation these were some of the issues that they needed to deal with.
She highlighted, too, that what must be examined is the effects of same-sex marriages on society and how this issue must be tackled.
“These are some of the things we should consider and I don’t think you dealt with that in the presentations,” Nestor stated, adding that the issues must be addressed “frontally.”
“Do we think that with the coming to being of this Bill that there might be quite a number of challenges to the Constitution in relation to the same issue of a man marrying a man? What do we do at the society (level)? Do we recognise that?” were the questions directed at the five speakers at the session.
Nestor continued: “There is some argument that says, `Oh the Bill does not promote homosexuality or does not encourage a man to marry (another) man, but if you look at Section (15) that talks about `non-discrimination’ then how can we not, with the passage of this Bill, allow a man not to marry (another) man.”
According to Nestor, matters of this nature constitute some of the “inconsistencies” of the Bill.
On the argument raised by presenters at the session on who determines what is morality, Nestor said in the concept of democracy it is the people who are the determinants based on a “line of thinking.”
She also rebutted on grounds that put the spotlight on teachers who may have been caught “interfering” with their young students and who may subsequently be dismissed from their jobs.
“Could you imagine such a person interfering with a boy below age 10 - and by virtue of the fact that the Bill is there, the judges (in the case) will have to use their discretion in terms of what happens. We will have more Constitutional changes and problems (arising with the passage of the Bill).”
SASOD member and law student, Joel Simpson, in reply, said he doesn’t think any homosexual in Guyana wants to “run into a church and ask that people marry them or anything of that sort.”
At one point likening the church to a “club”, Simpson claimed the church has the right to exclude whomever it wants. He further stated that in accordance with the Constitution, people of the same sex do not currently have the right to marry, and will also not be able to do such an act with the passage of the Bill.
However, Simpson said it is possible that the law, with the passage of the Bill, would have to recognise same-sex domestic partnerships in relation to employment benefits, sharing of properties, etc.
Simpson said he believes there should be a realm of “public” and “private” morality between consenting adults, and implied that the Bill did not fully give “rights” to homosexuals.
But, Nestor interjected: “I am informing you further…that the Sexual Orientation provision has, in fact, in some way recognised the rights of homosexuals and we must accept that.”
Meanwhile, there was no vocal Christian representative(s) at the consultation and apart from the two Opposition representatives none other participant gave comments or directed questions at the presenters.
Other speakers in support of the sexual orientation clause were: Moulana Mohammed Ali Zenjiban, Assistant Director of the International Islamic College; Denuka Radzik from Red Thread, Keimo Benjamin, UG law student and Vidyartha Kissoon from Help & Shelter.
The Sunday Chronicle has been reliably informed that the Georgetown Ministers Fellowship, representing groups of Christian leaders staunchly against sexual orientation as a right in Guyana, have recently prepared a detailed 16-page document outlining issues arising from research to further boost their argument against the inclusion of the clause.
The document is yet to be made public.

Retour sur deux projets de développement en aquaculture outre-mer : leçons pour l’avenir Auteur(s) : Lacroix, Denis Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : Lessons for the future from two development projects in aquaculture in the French overseas territories. Numerous research and development projects have been launched since the seventies in the French overseas territories. Their aim was to foster new activities in agriculture based on local productions for local markets, notably in the French West Indies (FWI). In this paper we analyze two development projects on the rearing of giant freshwater prawn, one in the FWI and the other in French Guyana, over twenty years after their launching. The purpose of these compared studies is twofold: first to try to understand why a set of relevant technical innovations ended in failure 15 years later; second to identify recommendations in terms of methodology in order to diminish risks of mistakes or failure for future projects. To reach this goal we followed two approaches. A first analysis is based on a set of three criteria: social acceptability, legitimacy and time planning. The second analysis, justified by the subjective need for an explanatory tool, is based on the actor-network theory. The results show that beyond the levels of political support and financial investment and support the three key criteria for success are: (i) reactivity of the decision-makers, notably when markets change, (ii) quality of leadership transfer between the launching phase and the stabilized phase, and (iii) capacity of the decision-makers to take into account the concrete consequences of the various scenarios. Regarding this third criterion, our analysis suggests that the scenario of full technical success needs to be explored, notably in terms of economic sustainability. The integration of these two types of analyses into an ex-ante frame should contribute to reducing risks of failure in similar development projects. De nombreux projets d’aquaculture ont été menés depuis les années 1970 dans les territoires et départements français d’outre-mer. L’objectif était de diversifier l’agriculture avec des productions destinées au marché local comme aux Antilles, ou à l’exportation comme en Guyane. L’étude s’intéresse au bilan de deux projets d’élevage de la crevette tropicale d’eau douce aux Antilles et en Guyane, plus de vingt ans après leur lancement. L’objectif est de comprendre comment des innovations technologiques pertinentes ont conduit à deux échecs sur le moyen terme et de tirer des recommandations de méthode afin de réduire les risques d’erreurs ultérieures. Pour cela, deux cadres d’analyse sont mobilisés : le premier s’appuie sur les concepts de temporalité, légitimité et acceptabilité ; le second, motivé par la recherche subjective de cadres explicatifs, emprunte la vision de la théorie de l’acteur-réseau. Les trois déterminants majeurs du succès ou de l’échec se révèlent être la réactivité des responsables face aux problèmes d’adaptation à l’évolution des marchés, la qualité du transfert du leadership lors du passage de la phase de lancement à la phase de croisière et enfin la capacité de prendre en compte dès le départ les conséquences des scénarios d’évolution du projet, y compris la réussite technique. Une capacité d’intégration de ces types d’analyse, dans un cadre ex ante, devrait permettre de réduire les risques d’échec dans des projets de développement similaires à venir. Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : How users perceive the performance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is fundamental for the social acceptance of these zones. Moreover, their perceptions may be relevant for monitoring the effects of MPAs on extractive activities. This study analyzes artisanal fishers' perceptions of the performance of a north-western Mediterranean coastal MPA, which encompasses two no-take zones (NTZs). Three viewpoints have been considered: the effect on the personal activity of fishers, the effect on the local fishery and the effect on the ecosystem. In order to test the hypothesis that biomass export (spillover) - which had previously been evidenced from the two NTZs - may influence fishers' perceptions of NTZ effects, fishers' perceptions were compared with both declared and observed fishing activity over an one-year period. The results show that negative perceptions of NTZs are either nil or are negligible. Most fishers are aware of the beneficial effects of NTZs on ecosystems and fisheries. However, they remain to be convinced of the beneficial effects of the NTZs on their own activity. For instance, the proximity of a NTZ appears never to be involved in the choice of a fishing spot. This partial lack of correspondence between scientific expectation and fishers' perceptions is discussed in the light of fishing habits in the zone adjacent to NTZs, and takes into account fishing grounds, targeted species and seniority (defined as the number of years the fisher has been fishing within the MPA). All three factors appear to influence fishers' perceptions. For example, having a positive perception about a NTZ and spending more time fishing in the adjacent zone are habits that can be associated with fishers with less seniority. Fishers' perceptions obviously indicate the social acceptance of the MPA and are an essential monitoring tool for MPA managers. Education thérapeutique du patient asthmatique bilingue français-créole en Guadeloupe : Quels outils, quel impact ? ; Therapeutic Patient Education of the asthmatic bilingual French-Creole patients in Guadeloupe : what tools, what impact? Auteur(s) : Gotin, Jacques Auteurs secondaires : Antilles-Guyane Groux, Dominique Raherison-Semjen, Chantal Résumé : Cette étude a pour missions essentielles de comprendre et d’expliquer comment le passage d’une langue à une autre voire le mélange des deux codes langagiers qui se côtoient au sein de la population de la Guadeloupe, département français d’outre-mer, le français et le créole, peuvent, dans le cadre des échanges médicaux éducatifs, influencer la compréhension des mécanismes de la maladie par le patient, son acceptation et sa gestion.La justification de cette étude tient du constat que la prévalence de cette maladie chronique en Guadeloupe, l’asthme bronchique, est relativement importante, que la prise en charge reste perfectible malgré les recommandations de bonnes pratiques édictées par les sociétés savantes, et que certains patients ont du mal à comprendre les termes utilisés en français par leur médecin lors de l’annonce du diagnostic, ainsi que par les éducateurs chargés de leur apporter les outils de bonne gestion de cette maladie, ce qui n’est pas sans incidents en termes de morbidité et de mortalité.L’auteur décompose sa recherche autour de cinq grands thèmes :- La description du territoire d’étude, sur le plan géographico-climatique, historico-économique, sanitaire et social, la naissance d’une ère culturelle nouvelle générant une langue partagée par plus de 95% de la population et transmise au sein des familles et dans la communauté.- La présentation de l’éducation thérapeutique, démarche considérée par la communauté scientifique comme essentielle pour améliorer la prise en charge du patient et l’autogestion de la maladie, les plans gouvernementaux successifs traitant de cette matière.- L’état des connaissances sur l’asthme bronchique en France, dans le monde et en Guadeloupe plus particulièrement.- L’impact de la langue créole dans le processus de compréhension de la maladie à travers la relation soignant-soigné, et ses conséquences chez les natifs bilingues en termes d’acquisitions des outils d’autogestion en comparaison à l’utilisation du français.- La formulation de propositions de contextualisation didactique, tant en termes de formation des professionnels de santé par la préconisation de l’utilisation de la langue créole, par l’adaptation des outils psychopédagogiques au contexte local, que d’encouragement du patient à utiliser sa langue maternelle dans l’expression de ses ressentis.La recherche montre que la langue créole, utilisée autant au cours de la consultation par le médecin traitant et par le malade que pendant les séances d’éducation thérapeutique par les éducateurs et le public, influence les indicateurs de gestion de cette maladie.En conclusion, l’auteur défend l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’utilisation de la langue créole dans les échanges médicaux éducatifs chez les adolescents asthmatiques bilingues français-créole favoriserait la compréhension des mécanismes de la maladie asthmatique, la prise de conscience de sa gravité et la nécessité de se soigner pour éviter les complications, corollaire d’une bonne qualité de vie. In Guadeloupe, a French Overseas Territory, the population uses French and Creole linguistic codes. The main goals of this thesis are to understand and to explain how a better use of French and Creole, within the framework of educational medical exchanges, can improve the understanding of the mechanisms of the disease by the patient, its acceptance and its management.The bronchial asthma is a chronic disease, which affects an important part of the Guadeloupian population. In spite of the recommendations promulgated by the medical scholars, the care of the patients can be improved in Guadeloupe. Certain patients have difficulty understanding the terms used in French by their doctor during the announcement of the diagnosis, as well as by the educators in charge of bringing them the tools of good management of this disease what is not without incidents in terms of morbidity and mortality.The author elaborates his research around five main themes:- The thorough description of the space studied in this thesis; the geography of the land, the history of the population, the impact of the economic; the presentation of the social and health care infrastructures; and furthermore the birth of a new cultural era generating a language shared by more than 95 % of the population and passed on within families and communities.- The presentation of the therapeutic education, the approach considered by the scientific community as essential to improve the management of the patient and the self-management of the disease, the successive governmental plans dealing with this subject.- The state of the knowledge on the bronchial asthma in France, in the world and in Guadeloupe more particularly.- The impact of the Creole language in the process of understanding of the disease within the healthcare relationships and its consequences at the bilingual natives in terms of acquisitions of the tools of self-management in comparison to the use of French.- The formulation of proposals of didactic contextualization regarding the training of the healthcare professionals; the recommendation to the healthcare workers to use the Creole language; the adaptation of the psycho-pedagogical tools to the local context; the encouragement to the patients to use their native language in the expression of their feelings.- Researches show that the Creole language used during the consultation by the regular doctor, but also during the educational sessions therapeutics by the educators influence the indicators of management of this disease. Ces clients ont été sélectionnés dans le cadre d'une recherche expérimentale menée dans l'optique d'un déploiement ultérieur de cette nouvelle technologie sur l'ensemble du territoire de la Martinique. La recherche, toujours en cours, s'organise sur deux phases. La première correspond à l'étape concomitante à l'installation du compteur au domicile des personnes sélectionnées pour l'expérimentation. Elle vise à étudier les conditions d'acceptabilité du compteur communicant. La deuxième phase quant à elle s'intéresse à l'acceptation du compteur et du portail sur lequel les consommateurs peuvent visionner leurs consommations, suivre des objectifs et recevoir des conseils. The first experiment studies whether the language used for the instructions influences the motor performances among bilingual children in situation of learning. Eighty bilin-gual French/Creole children (age means 10.4) were distributed into two experimental groups to learn how to perform a motor task. One group received instructions in French and the other one in Creole. The data suggest that the language of presentation affects the execution of a motor task. Both groups had the same performance level at the beginning of the experiment. We noticed that the group taught in Creole obtained better performances than the group taught in French at the end of the learning situation. The results are discussed in terms of their implications to physical education and motor rehabilitation of bilinguals. The two following experiments reported in the present paper concern (i) the differential imagery value of French and Creole and (ii) the influence of language on the recall of sequences of patterned movements in a bilingual population. Creole words were obtained a higher imagery value than French words, certainly because Creole is an oral and vernacular language. Motor recall scores were better when the sequence was presented in Creole compared to French. The generation of visual images by Creole would facilitate the memorization and recall of new sequences of movements. The effect of language on imagery value of words and motor recall among bilingual French–Creole subjects was discussed in terms of nature of information encoding in each language. The goal of the fourt and last study tries to know the language impact on the movement imagery ability of guadeloupean children. A person is able to represent verbal information with an image (Denis, 1989; Paivio, 1986). The language can he influence this ability on bilingual individuals? If Creole has more to do with image than French (Michelot, 2000), this survey considers a distinct language influence on the mental images vividness specified by guadeloupean children. 123 secondary school pupils (average age 13.45) altogether accepted to fill in the Movement Imagery Questionnaire of Hall and Pongrac (1983). This test enables to measure the rapidity of visual and kinaesthetic images. The “Creole” group (59 children; average age 13. 43) got the MIQ translated in Creole and the “French” group (64 children; average age 13.46) the French version of the test. Finally, language does not generally influence the movement imagery capacity. Yet, the kinaesthetic images are more vivid in French than in Creole for the subjects tested, aged from 11 to 13. The subjects aged from 14 to 16 have, only in Creole, more vivid visual images than the subjects aged from 11 to 13. The language affects the movement imagery ability with age of this guadeloupean children. L'exécution d'une tâche motrice chez des bilingues est-elle affectée par la langue dans laquelle les consignes sont formulées ? Une première expérience a été menée en vue d'analyser si la langue de présentation des consignes influence les performances motrices d'enfants bilingues en situation d'apprentissage. Quatre-vingt bilingues français/créole (âge moyen : 10,4 ans) ont été répartis dans deux groupes expérimentaux afin d'apprendre à réaliser une tâche motrice, l'un recevant les consignes en français et l'autre en créole. Les données suggèrent que la langue de présentation affecte l'exécution d'une tâche motrice. Le groupe enseigné en créole obtient de meilleures performances en fin d'apprentissage comparativement à celles obtenues par le groupe enseigné en français, alors que les deux groupes ont au départ un niveau comparable. Ces résultats sont discutés sur le plan de leur implication pour l'éducation physique et la réadaptation motrice des bilingues. Les deux expérimentations suivantes évaluent (i) la valeur d'imagerie de mots et (ii) le rappel moteur d'enchaînements auprès de bilingues français–créole en faisant varier la langue de présentation. Les mots en créole, supposés susciter plus facilement des images mentales visuelles, car le créole est une langue orale et vernaculaire, ont effectivement obtenu une cote plus élevée que les mots français sur l'échelle de valeur d'imagerie. L'évocation d'images visuelles facilitant la mémorisation et la planification de séquences de mouvements, les performances de rappel obtenues à partir des consignes en créole ont été supérieures à celles obtenues en français. Les effets de la langue de présentation sur la valeur d'imagerie des mots et le rappel moteur d'enchaînements de morphocinèses auprès des participants bilingues sont discutés en termes de nature d'encodage de l'information verbale dans chacune des langues. L'objectif de cette quatrième et dernière recherche est de connaître l'impact de la langue sur la capacité d'imagerie du mouvement d'enfants guadeloupéens. Un individu peut se représenter des informations verbales sous une forme imagée (Denis, 1989; Paivio, 1986). La langue peut-elle influencer cette capacité chez des individus bilingues ? Le créole étant plus imagé que le français (Michelot, 2000), nous prévoyons une influence distincte de la langue sur le degré de vivacité des images mentales. Cent-vingt-trois collégiens guadeloupéens (âge moyen 13.45) ont rempli un questionnaire d'imagerie du mouvement (MIQ de Hall et Pongrac, 1983) mesurant la vivacité d'images visuelles et kinesthésiques. Un groupe «créole» (59 enfants; âge moyen 13.43) l'a passé en créole et un groupe «français» (64 enfants; âge moyen 13.46) en français. Finalement, la langue n'influence pas la capacité d'imagerie mentale de notre échantillon. Mais la vivacité des images kinesthésiques est supérieure en français chez les sujets de 11 à 13 ans et celle des images visuelles des sujets de 14 à 16 ans est supérieure à celle des sujets de 11 à 13 ans seulement en créole. La transmission du patrimoine médicinal créole : problématique, pertinence et évaluation d’un savoir traditionnel ; The transmission of the creole medicinal heritage : Problem, relevance and estimate of a certain traditional knowledge Auteur(s) : Concy, Huguette Auteurs secondaires : Antilles-Guyane Groux, Dominique Bélaise, Max Résumé : En occupant un espace social privilégié, la médecine traditionnelle et les diverses pratiques qui y sont liées, sont de moins en moins marginalisées, de plus en plus admises comme ressources et la société leur devient du même coup permissive. La tolérance sociale est relativement forte ». Cette lecture de la situation de la médecine traditionnelle et de sa réception dans la société est celle de l’anthropologue et médecine martiniquais M. Yoyo. Elle évoque la réalité de la médecine créole dans l’espace antillais et dit l’intérêt que lui portent ceux qui en font usage.L’objectif de cette recherche est de poser la question de la transmission du savoir médicinal en contexte martiniquais : transmission des tradipraticiens vers les profanes ; transmission entre professionnels de cette médecine. Autrement dit comment se fait l’apprentissage si apprentissage il y a, de ce savoir traditionnel, jalousement gardé par ceux qui l’exercent ? La dimension magico-religieuse de ce savoir influe-t-elle sur sa transmission ? Quel est le rôle de la famille dans l’éducation et la transmission de ces pratiques ? Quelle est la connaissance profane accessible à tous et que détiennent certaines familles ? Celle-ci répond-elle aux attentes de la médecine traditionnelle et comment les familles procèdent-elles à sa transmission ? Quelle contribution l’institution scolaire apporte-t-elle à la sauvegarde de ce patrimoine ? Ce questionnement nous amène à nous interroger sur les pratiques en matière de médecine des Martiniquais et à considérer la coexistence entre savoir traditionnel et savoir rationnel dit moderne.On ne peut faire l’économie de ces analyses si on veut appréhender de façon objective le problème de la transmission de la médecine créole, de sa sauvegarde par – et pour – les générations montantes, en raison de l’aspect mémoriel de cette pratique thérapeutique mais également en raison de son efficacité et du potentiel important qu’elle représente pour la santé dans les années qui viennent. By occupying a privileged social space, traditional medicine and the diverses practices related to the field are less and less marginalized, more and more accepted as resources, thus society is gradually becoming more tolerant towards those practices. The social tolerance is relatively strong”. This perception of the present situation of traditional medicine and of its reception in society is proposed by M. Yoyo, French anthropologist and physician from Martinique. It speaks of the reality of traditional medicine in the west Indians context and highlights the positive affects on those who make use of it. The objective of this research is to explore the question of the transmission of medicinal knowledge within the confines of Martinique: transmission by traditionalists towards nonprofessionals as well as transmission among professionals in the fields of medicine. In other words, what learning, if any, still exists of this traditional knowledge faithfully kept by those practiced it? To what extent does the magical-religious experience influence the transmission of this knowledge? What is the role of the family in the education and the transmission of those practices? How much of this profane knowledge is accessible to all and to what extent is it practiced by families? Does the latter respond to the demands of traditional medicine? How do families proceed with the process of transmission. What contribution does the school make towards preserving this tradition ? The above questions provoke reflection on the medicinal practices of the people of Martinique and of the possible coexistence of traditional knowledge and modern or rational knowledge. These questions are inevitable if we want to progress with objectivity in the transmission of Creole medicine and of its preservation for future generations, as a form of safeguarding the memory of this therapeutic practice. International audience Malgré leur meilleure réussite scolaire, les filles réussissent moins bien que les garçons en éducation physique et sportive (EPS). A partir de la sociologie des curricula, nous analysons les curricula réel et caché, ainsi que les représentations des enseignants d’EPS dans un lycée d’enseignement général fréquenté par une population favorisée. Notre étude est centrée sur une analyse thématique des appréciations portées par trois enseignants d’EPS sur les bulletins scolaires. Nos résultats montrent que le curriculum réel est plus proche de la culture des garçons. De plus, les bulletins scolaires véhiculent un curriculum caché affirmant la supériorité des garçons en EPS. Les représentations professorales sont affectées par des biais de perception selon le sexe des élèves. Ces dernières sont transmises au travers du curriculum caché.
