A stochastic viability approach to ecosystem-based fisheries management Auteur(s) : Doyen, Luc Thebaud, Olivier Bene, Christopher Martinet, V. Gourguet, S. Bertignac, Michel Fifas, Spyros Blanchard, Fabian Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : Academia and management agencies show a growing interest for ecosystem-based fishery management (EBFM). However, the way to operationalize this approach remains challenging. The present paper illustrates how the concepts of stochastic co-viability, which accounts for dynamic complexities, uncertainties, risk and sustainability constraints, can be useful for the implementation of EBFM. In the present case, this concept is used to identify fishing strategies that satisfy both ecological conservation and economic sustainability in a multi-species, multi-fleet context. Economic Viability Analysis (EVA) and the broader Co-Viability Analysis (CVA), are proposed to expand the usual Population Viability Analysis (PVA) and precautionary approach. An illustration is proposed, using data on the fisheries of Bay of Biscay (France) exploiting the stocks of nephrops and hake. Stochastic simulations show how CVA can guarantee both ecological (stock) and economic (profit) sustainability. Using 2008 as a baseline, the model is used to identify fishing efforts that ensure such co-viability. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Patterns of variations in large pelagic fish: A comparative approach between the Indian and the Atlantic Oceans Auteur(s) : Corbineau, A. Rouyer, Tristan Fromentin, Jean-marc Cazelles, B. Fonteneau, Alain Menard, Frederic Éditeur(s) : Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : Catch data of large pelagic fish such as tuna, swordfish and billfish are highly variable ranging from short to long term. Based on fisheries data, these time series are noisy and reflect mixed information on exploitation (targeting, strategy, fishing power), population dynamics (recruitment, growth, mortality, migration, etc.), and environmental forcing (local conditions or dominant climate patterns). In this work, we investigated patterns of variation of large pelagic fish (i.e. yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, swordfish and blue marlin) in Japanese longliners catch data from 1960 to 2004. We performed wavelet analyses on the yearly time series of each fish species in each biogeographic province of the tropical Indian and Atlantic Oceans. In addition, we carried out cross-wavelet analyses between these biological time series and a large-scale climatic index, i.e. the Southern Oscillation Index (Sol). Results showed that the biogeographic province was the most important factor structuring the patterns of variability of Japanese catch time series. Relationships between the SOI and the fish catches in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans also pointed out the role of climatic variability for structuring patterns of variation of catch time series. This work finally confirmed that Japanese longline CPUE data poorly reflect the underlying population dynamics of tunas. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Conséquences pour les pêcheries Auteur(s) : Blanchard, Fabian Thebaud, Olivier Guyader, Olivier Lorance, Pascal Boucher, Jean Chevaillier, Pierre Résumé : The populations of fishes dwelling near the sea bed (demersal species) on the continental shelf are usually the object of intense commercial exploitation. The Bay of Biscay shelf is no exception. Hence, populations suffer from this exploitation. Moreover, the general role played by hydro-climatic variations in the regulation of the abundance of demersal fish populations (population dynamics) is traditionally admitted. In the Bay of Biscay, a warming of the surface water has been observed over the three last decades (Koutsikopoulos et al., 1998). Climate change therefore has potential consequences on fish communities. Thus, the structure and dynamics of fish populations on the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay are susceptible to suffer both from the effects of a human activity (fishing) and of climate change (warming). Fisheries should therefore suffer more or less from these changes depending on their adaptation capacity. Systèmes d'exploitation en pêche côtière ; méthode d'étude et application au cas des Pertuis Auteur(s) : Moussard, F Éditeur(s) : ESITPA, Rouen Résumé : This report presents a functional typology of the exploitation systems of fisheries in the Charentais sounds. It describes the nature of such a typology as well as the method developed in relation to the topic of the study. The determination and formalization accepted to characterise the exploitation systems are outlined. Also presented is the evaluation of the value of the vessels of the sounds fleet. Types are identified based on two main explanatory variables: capital and work. They enable us to set the internal dynamics of the production system straight. The exploitation indeed has an important effect in terms of biomass reduction, but environmental forcing is of central interest as it affects numerous key biological processes. Recent theoretical results have shown that the nature of the environmental fluctuations, the environmental noise, has important ecological consequences on populations and particularly on their fluctuations. In addition the effects of exploitation, that are not a simple removal of individuals but also profoundly modifies the demography, the structure and the trophic interactions of fish stocks, can interact with environmental effects. Through an extensive analysis of time series we aim at understanding the effects of environmental noise on fish stocks variability, according to their biological characteristics (life-history traits) and their exploitation. A technique of time series comparison allows to propose that the fluctuations of Atlantic large pelagics are inherited from the interaction between environmental effects, endogenous dynamics and exploitation. We then show that the colour of environmental noise affects the variability of time series, its effects depending on the life-history traits of species. Finally, preliminary results on bentho-demersal and pelagic stocks from the North Atlantic suggest that the exploitation increases the sensitivity of fish stocks to the colour of environmental noise and affects their variability, according to their life-history traits. Baitboat as a tuna aggregating device Auteur(s) : Hallier, Jean-pierre Delgado De Molina, A Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : The original baitboat fishing technique using a permanent association between the fishing boat and the tuna school has been developed by the baitboat fleet of Dakar, Senegal and is also in use in the Canary Islands. This new fishing technique, the result of 20 years of improvements still on, has induced a dramatic increase of the catch yields which, in turn, has sustained the survival and even a recent development of the fleet. This technique is based on the aggregating behaviour of tropical tunas. However, it contains a dynamic component which is not found in tuna fishing on drifting or anchored fads. The specifications of the method, its refinement over the years and its main consequences for the fishery are described together with the school exchanges between baitboats over months even from one year to the next. Based on the analysis of 1228 recoveries from 5500 tagged fish, tuna movements among associated schools, between associated schools and free schools fished by purse seiners and movements in and out of the baitboat fishing grounds help to better understand the dynamics of tunas and schools of this peculiar tuna association. These data show a very high recovery rate, a remarkable tuna fidelity to the original school for all species, a small number of recoveries within the purse seine catch as well as the rare tuna movements outside the baitboat area. The study highlights the complexity and the numerous consequences of tuna and school behaviour. Nutrient dynamics, primary production and fisheries yields of lagoons Auteur(s) : Nixon, S W Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : Differences appear to have a marked influence on the species composition of lagoon ecosystems around the world, but there are some remarkable similarities in nutrient dynamics, the standing crop of phytoplankton, annual primary production, and fisheries yields of many lagoons. For example, in many of the systems reviewed, the annual phosphate cycle was similar in timing and magnitude, primary production amounted to some 200-400 g C m super(-1) yr super(-1). There appears to be an empirical correlation between primary production and fisheries yields in a great variety of marine systems. The yield of lagoon fisheries per unit area is commonly as high or higher than that from the most productive coastal and offshore fisheries. Approche empirique de la pecherie d'espadon (Xiphias gladius) dans l'ocean Indien et modelisation des deplacements des poissons dans le paysage oceanique tropical Auteur(s) : Guyomard, David Éditeur(s) : Ecole Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Rennes Résumé : Long-line fishing has been growing on the island of La Réunion since the beginning of the 1990s. The target species is the swordfish (Xiphias gladius), fished mainly in the tropical waters surrounding the island between longitudes 45 degree E and 60 degree E, and latitudes 17 degree S and 27 degree S. From 1998 to 2000, a finalised research programme enabled the collection of precise data concerning the lines' positions and the parameters of the fishing efforts: 3,602 nettings were thus informed by the catches (in numbers of individuals caught) and 12 descriptive variables of the effort. In parallel with this collection effort, satellite maps that described the ocean's landscape of this region of the Indian Ocean exploited by La Réunion's fisheries were made available to sailors and scientists. Extractions from these environmental variables were made at the fishing lines' positions, which allowed us to propose 20 variables describing the environmental conditions of swordfish catches applied to the nettings. In an early part of this study, after a descriptive analysis and a first selection of the variables, we used several GAM (Generalised Additive Models) to model the respective effects of effort and environmental variables on the variability of swordfish catches. We thus highlighted the predominance of factors linked to fishermen (fishing effort) on oceanographic factors in the explanation of this variability. Following these results, a summary on the biology and ecology of the swordfish was proposed in order to draw up hypotheses on the characteristics of this species' population in the Indian Ocean. The aspects linked to the individual behaviour and movements of the population were particularly highlighted. In a latter part of this study and in order to complete the empirical approach by an exploratory constructivist approach, we proposed a modelling tool in order to simulate the possible movements of individuals within the oceanic landscape described by the available satellite maps. After reading in the literature about the various forms of modelling the movements of the large pelagics, we developed an original computer modelling architecture of the multi-agent type that made it possible to manipulate in a dynamic way the satellite maps (and derived products), the individual movements of "animats" whose behaviours were based on this environmental information, and agents that clarify the process of long-line fishing in a geographical way. The computer model that was implemented (MUFINS, for MUlti-Fish INdian ocean Simulator) was next used by calibrating the behaviour of the animats on the real data originally from the analysis of commercial catches proposed in the first part, using robust techniques based on fuzzy logic. The results of the simulations were compared, on the one hand, with the large-scale hypotheses of movement proposed in the first part, and, on the other hand, to swordfish catches both real and corrected for the effect of the fishing effort modelled by the GAM models. Even if the results of these simulations in this study do not allow for proposing convincing interpretations of the underlying processes, the MUFINS tool showed its ability to address questions associated with the swordfish's behaviour in the tropical oceanic landscape and to the effects of scale transfers between the individual level and the collective level. We now envisage its use in a more operational framework, as an interface for dialogue between fishermen and scientists with a goal of sustainable management of the resource. Towards the Determination of Mytilus edulis Food Preferences Using the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) Theory Auteur(s) : Picoche, Coralie Le Gendre, Romain Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan Francoise, Sylvaine Maheux, Frank Simon, Benjamin Gangnery, Aline Éditeur(s) : Public Library Science Résumé : The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is a commercially important species, with production based on both fisheries and aquaculture. Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models have been extensively applied to study its energetics but such applications require a deep understanding of its nutrition, from filtration to assimilation. Being filter feeders, mussels show multiple responses to temporal fluctuations in their food and environment, raising questions that can be investigated by modeling. To provide a better insight into mussel–environment interactions, an experiment was conducted in one of the main French growing zones (Utah Beach, Normandy). Mussel growth was monitored monthly for 18 months, with a large number of environmental descriptors measured in parallel. Food proxies such as chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon and phytoplankton were also sampled, in addition to non-nutritious particles. High-frequency physical data recording (e.g., water temperature, immersion duration) completed the habitat description. Measures revealed an increase in dry flesh mass during the first year, followed by a high mass loss, which could not be completely explained by the DEB model using raw external signals. We propose two methods that reconstruct food from shell length and dry flesh mass variations. The former depends on the inversion of the growth equation while the latter is based on iterative simulations. Assemblages of food proxies are then related to reconstructed food input, with a special focus on plankton species. A characteristic contribution is attributed to these sources to estimate nutritional values for mussels. M. edulis shows no preference between most plankton life history traits. Selection is based on the size of the ingested particles, which is modified by the volume and social behavior of plankton species. This finding reveals the importance of diet diversity and both passive and active selections, and confirms the need to adjust DEB models to different populations and sites.
