The geology of the inlier differs from other Paleoproterozoic granite-greenstone belts and sedimentary basins by the abundance of carbonate rocks. The Sadiola Hill gold deposit occurs within 3 km of the Senegal-Mali shear zone, and country rocks in the region have undergone polycyclic deformation. The lithostratigraphy of the open pit consists of impure limestones overlain by younger sequences of detrital sedimentary rocks, which include arenite, wacke, and siltstone. The sedimentary rocks have been subjected to regional greenschist-facies metamorphism and have been intruded by multiple generations of synkinematic, calc-alkaline stocks and dikes. The bulk of the ore is hosted within a N-S- to NNW-trending, 10- to 50-m-wide, brittle-ductile dilational shear zone defined as the Sadiola shear zone. Gold lodes also occur along an array of steep NNE-trending shear zones. Geometric and kinematic analyses indicate that the ore-hosting structures were undergoing sinistral displacement at the time of mineralization, locally defined as the D3s NNW-SSE-shortening event. Hydrothermal alteration is polyphase and includes an early high-temperature calc-silicate phase (i.e., porphyroblastic growth of actinolite-tremolite) followed by a potassic phase (i.e., biotite-calcite-quartz ± K-feldspar-tourmaline-actinolite) that was synchronous with ore mineral deposition. Paragenetic studies reveal a multistage ore development that includes an As-rich sulfide stage, followed by an Au-Sb stage. The ore is associated with a metal enrichment suite of Au-As-Sb ± Cu-Fe-W-Mo-Ag-Bi-Zn-Pb-Te. The Sadiola Hill deposit shares a similar relative timing and structural setting to that of other world-class orogenic gold systems in the West African craton (e.g., Ashanti, Loulo), with gold deposition occurring during a period of transcurrent tectonics, after the cessation of region-wide compressional deformation. The high-temperature paragenesis at Sadiola Hill is atypical of gold mineralization in the craton and indicates that the late Eburnean tectono-magmatic activity between ca. 2080 and 2060 Ma played an important role in the dynamics of hydrothermal fluid circulation along the Senegal-Mali shear zone. The issue of attractiveness is often mentioned by several authors to explain international or regional student’s mobilities. The attractiveness of the host country, or host universities are part of the explanatory logic’s scheme. This paper mobilizes the context of academic crisis generated by the 2010’s earthquake in Haiti to examine the meanings of the concept of attractiveness in the almost forced student mobility and originated from African countries. And this, by examining institutional and political springs of mobility programs offered by Benin and Senegal to Haitian students while most northern countries opted to relocate Haitian students or maintain them on site. Our analysis highly relativizes attractiveness as major determinant of student mobility in the context of academic crisis generated by natural disaster. Complexity in trophic structure and stability in a modelled West African estuary Auteur(s) : Villanueva, Ching-maria Diouf, P.s. Albaret, J.-j. An Ecopath model of the Sine Saloum estuary (Senegal) with a total of 37 functional groups is used in this study to determine the key features of this aquatic system. The high fish species biodiversity in the ecosystem may play a role of ensuring its integrity, especially in the presence of stress, though it was observed that this is not entirely the case. Results show that another mitigating factor is the level of interaction strengths between functional groups. Stability is improved by weaker connectance as well as shorter and fatter pyramids. Though differing issues arise with respect to questions driving a system's stability, methods and approaches should consider placing results in the context of a broader ecological theory. Evolution geochimique et exemple d'amenagement des mangroves au Senegal (Casamance) Auteur(s) : Marius, C Lucas, J Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : The mangroves of Senegal are limited to the inlet of the Casamance - a river with very low discharge - and to the Sine-Saloum. The mineralogical and geochemical analysis of sediments (derived from 30 deep bore-holes) shows the thickness of the mangrove substrate, which overlies the continental terminal formation. Kaolinite and smectite account for over 90% of the clay fraction. The former is derived from the continental terminal whereas the latter is of marine origin. The chemical composition of the mangrove sediments is remarkably stable and clays play an overwhelming role in the preservation of organic matter and pyrite. Since 1968, a drought in Senegal has caused an important increase in the salinity levels of streams and water-tables; a considerable modification of vegetation zones in the Casamance, especially manifest in the extension of bare flats locally known as "tannes" at the expense of mangroves and marked changes in the morphology and geochemistry of mangrove soils. Compared to most mangrove areas in the humid tropics, mangroves in Senegal are characterized by a very fragile equilibrium. Baitboat as a tuna aggregating device Auteur(s) : Hallier, Jean-pierre Delgado De Molina, A Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : The original baitboat fishing technique using a permanent association between the fishing boat and the tuna school has been developed by the baitboat fleet of Dakar, Senegal and is also in use in the Canary Islands. This new fishing technique, the result of 20 years of improvements still on, has induced a dramatic increase of the catch yields which, in turn, has sustained the survival and even a recent development of the fleet. This technique is based on the aggregating behaviour of tropical tunas. However, it contains a dynamic component which is not found in tuna fishing on drifting or anchored fads. The specifications of the method, its refinement over the years and its main consequences for the fishery are described together with the school exchanges between baitboats over months even from one year to the next. Based on the analysis of 1228 recoveries from 5500 tagged fish, tuna movements among associated schools, between associated schools and free schools fished by purse seiners and movements in and out of the baitboat fishing grounds help to better understand the dynamics of tunas and schools of this peculiar tuna association. These data show a very high recovery rate, a remarkable tuna fidelity to the original school for all species, a small number of recoveries within the purse seine catch as well as the rare tuna movements outside the baitboat area. The study highlights the complexity and the numerous consequences of tuna and school behaviour. An integrated fish-plankton aquaculture system in brackish water Auteur(s) : Gilles, S. Fargier, L. Lazzaro, X. Baras, E. De Wilde, Nicolas Drakides, C. Amiel, C. Rispal, B. Éditeur(s) : Cambridge Univ Press Résumé : Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture takes advantage of the mutualism between some detritivorous fish and phytoplankton. The fish recycle nutrients by consuming live (and dead) algae and provide the inorganic carbon to fuel the growth of live algae. In the meanwhile, algae purify the water and generate the oxygen required by fishes. Such mechanism stabilizes the functioning of an artificially recycling ecosystem, as exemplified by combining the euryhaline tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii and the unicellular alga Chlorella sp. Feed addition in this ecosystem results in faster fish growth but also in an increase in phytoplankton biomass, which must be limited. In the prototype described here, the algal population control is exerted by herbivorous zooplankton growing in a separate pond connected in parallel to the fish-algae ecosystem. The zooplankton production is then consumed by tilapia, particularly by the fry and juveniles, when water is returned to the main circuit. Chlorella sp. and Brachionus plicatilis are two planktonic species that have spontaneously colonized the brackish water of the prototype, which was set-up in Senegal along the Atlantic Ocean shoreline. In our system, water was entirely recycled and only evaporation was compensated (1.5% volume/day). Sediment, which accumulated in the zooplankton pond, was the only trophic cul-de-sac. The system was temporarily destabilized following an accidental rotifer invasion in the main circuit. This caused Chlorella disappearance and replacement by opportunist algae, not consumed by Brachionus. Following the entire consumption of the Brachionus population by tilapias, Chlorella predominated again. Our artificial ecosystem combining S. m. heudelotii, Chlorella and B. plicatilis thus appeared to be resilient. This farming system was operated over one year with a fish productivity of 1.85 kg/m(2) per year during the cold season (January to April). This article focuses on new uses and users of the coast of Senegal’s Petite Côte. It aims to show the current dynamics of the resort of Saly and analyse the socio-economic changes and environmental all-out occupation of the coastal space guided by new principles of seaside tourism development. The study is based on a survey conducted in three coastal towns like Saly Portudal, Somone and Nianing. From fifteen semi-structured interviews with various stakeholders and users of the coast, a questionnaire was built around the socio-demographic characteristics of users, practices and perceptions of coastal risks. It shows that the different coastal areas of the uses are related to the different experiences of the populations concerned. Therefore, the question arises as to assess the consequences of the expansion of Saly on the surrounding traditional neighbourhoods to understand the multiple dimensions of conflicts of use resulting therefrom in order to resolve them.
