Résumé : In order to provide economic indicators for fisheries, analysis of contribution and economic dependencies of the Bay of Biscay fishing fleets to major commercial species catching in the ICES VIII area is conducted. 9 species are considered (regarding the importance of their landings in this area): Sole, Norway Lobster, Sea bass, Hake, Anglerfish, Anchovy, Sardine, Cuttlefish and Monkfish. The landings data are provided by the Harmonie database of the Fisheries Information System of Ifremer and the analysis per specie is done for the 2005 year on one side and over the period 2000-2005 on the other side. A stock slip is built for each species and presents : - Key figures on landings in the Bay of Biscay (total landings, average price, number of vessels concerned and share in the national landings) - Assessment of the concentration of landings - Assessment of the fleets' contribution to these total landings - Assessment of the fleets' economic dependence to the species based on the income share depending on this species.
Dans le cadre de l'élaboration des indicateurs économiques sur les pêcheries, une analyse de la contribution et de la dépendance des flottilles du Golfe de Gascogne aux espèces commerciales majeures capturées dans la zone CIEM VIII est présentée. Les 9 espèces principales retenues sont (par ordre décroissant d'importance dans les débarquements totaux en valeur dans la zone VIII en 2005) : la sole, la langoustine, le bar, le merlu, la baudroie, l'anchois , la sardine, la seiche et le calmar. L'analyse des débarquements par stock est menée à partir des données disponibles dans la base Harmonie du SIH de l'Ifremer à deux niveaux : en coupe instantanée (année 2005) a été choisie comme année de référence (sauf pour l'anchois - année de référence 2004 et en tendance de 2000 à 2005. Chaque fiche stock présente : - des chiffres clés sur la production de cette espèce dans le Golfe de Gascogne (débarquements totaux, prix moyen, nombre de navires impliqués, part dans les débarquements nationaux). - une analyse du niveau de concentration des débarquements - une analyse de la contribution par flottilles à ces débarquements par ordre décroissant des contributions au débarquement total en valeur de l'espèce - une analyse de la dépendance mesurée à partir de la contribution de l'espèce aux Chiffre d'affaires (ou débarquements totaux en valeur) de chaque flottille contributrice.

Description : Under tropical and sub-tropical climates, a sustainable development of agriculture is challenging because of the pest pressure with favorable weather conditions. Implementation of appropriate cropping systems including growing cover crops and crop rotation plays a critical role, which can break up the food chain and life cycles of field pests. Some field trials have demonstrated that among all tested summer cover crops, sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L. cv. Tropic sun) can grow vigorously during the rainy summer, cover the land quickly and densely, and it can produce a large quantity of biomass in two to three months. More importantly, sunn hemp can suppress soil root-knot nematodes via releasing some nematicides through its roots and through the decomposition of plant residues. Therefore, growing cover crop â? ? sunn hemp during the crop off season and rotating with valuable vegetable crops in the growing season has become a promising cropping system under the subtropical climate. Such a result may have a potential to be implemented in Caribbean countries to improve the sustainable development of agriculture.

Maima-Seville Heritage Park, owned and operated by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, is made up of three distinct areas: the original Spanish settlement - Sevilla La Nueva, a British sugar plantation, and forested regions. The following preserved structures can be found at the site: the Governor’s castle, a Spanish sugar mill, an artisan workshop, and the remains of a Spanish settlement, a Spanish church, and a British great house. A digital land cover map of South America has been produced using remotely sensed satellite data acquired between 1995 and the year 2000. The mapping scale is defined by the 1 km spatial resolution of the map grid-cell. In order to realize the product, different sources of satellite data were used, each source providing either a particular parameter of land cover characteristic required by the legend, or mapping a particular land cover class. The map legend is designed both to fit requirements for regional climate modelling and for studies on land cover change. The legend is also compatible with a wider, global, land cover mapping exercise, which seeks to characterize the world's land surface for the year 2000. As a first step, the humid forest domain has been validated using a sample of high-resolution satellite images. The map demonstrates both the major incursions of agriculture into the remaining forest domains and the extensive areas of agriculture, which now dominate South America's grasslands.

Robert Fulton (1765-1815) was an American inventor credited with adapting the steam engine for commercial use in boats. He worked with Robert Livingston to provide steamboat service along the Hudson River. In 1909, Steamboat Robert Fulton, pictured, went into service for the Hudson River Day Line and made its final voyage on September 13, 1948. In 1959, the steamboat was brought to land at Snake Cay, Abaco, Bahamas where it later housed the offices and apartments for Owens-Illinois Incorporated, a lumber company. In this image, automobiles are parked next to the offices of Owens-Illinois Incorporated. Men are gathered near the end of the steamboat. Slide labeled Pay Day Owens Illinois Co. Résumé : The three main sources of organic matter in oceanic basins are marine plankton, terrestrial higher plants and undifferentiated residual organic matter which has been highly degraded in subaerial environments. The time and areal distribution of marine organic matter is mainly controlled by the conditions of preservation. In deep oceans accumulation occurs mainly in confined anoxic basins, and also in open ocean, where local conditions generate a surplus of supply over bacterial degradation. Moderately degraded terrestrial organic matter is derived from land plants and carried away by rivers and currents. It is mainly deposited in sediments of the river fans. Residual organic matter has been highly degraded in subaerial conditions prior to transportation, and may consist of contemporaneous and/or recycled material. It cannot be degraded any more and may be spread over wide areas, regardless of the local environments.

Description : Antarctica is a continent of enigmas. Stunning geographic beauty belies its inhospitable climate. Covered a mile thick in ice, it is the world's largest desert. Fossil ferns found in its mountains speak of its prehistory as a tropical rainforest, but now is largely devoid of life. Its most famous inhabitant, the penguin, is thought of as a flightless bird, but soars underwater much as a falcon glides the sky. Perhaps one of the greatest enigmas is the contrast between the terrestrial and marine environments. On land, monochromatic snow and ice support little life, yet the sea teams with life, life that expresses itself with the full rainbow of colors. Color is but one manifestation of chemical ecology. The Antarctic benthos supports an extensive community of predators and prey, competitors and facilitators. A harsh geographic history has contributed to marine diversification and enhanced what we now recognize as a rich flora and fauna, commensurate in some instances with temperate kelp forests and even approaching the richness of tropical marine environments. Not surprisingly, Antarctic benthic ecology is highly dependent on chemical mediation of interspecific interactions, interweaving chemodiversity with biodiversity in a classical yin and yang feedback loop. The evolution of selective chemical defenses facilitates drug discovery research, producing suites of metabolites that inform structure-activity studies and add breadth to bioactivity profiles. This presentation will focus on recent and contextual research from our lab which has demonstrated the potential for new biomedical lead molecules and scaffolds from these difficult to access biological resources.
