Phylogeography of the green turtle, Chelonia mydas, in the Southwest Indian Ocean Auteur(s) : Bourjea, Jerome Lapegue, Sylvie Gagnevin, L Broderick, D Mortimer, J.a. Ciccione, S Roos, David Taquet, Coralie Éditeur(s) : Blackwell science Résumé : Patterns of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation were used to analyse the population genetic structure of southwestern Indian Ocean green turtle (Chelonia mydas) populations. Analysis of sequence variation over 396 bp of the mtDNA control region revealed seven haplotypes among 288 individuals from 10 nesting sites in the Southwest Indian Ocean. This is the first time that Atlantic Ocean haplotypes have been recorded among any Indo-Pacific nesting populations. Previous studies indicated that the Cape of Good Hope was a major biogeographical barrier between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans because evidence for gene flow in the last 1.5 million years has yet to emerge. This study, by sampling localities adjacent to this barrier, demonstrates that recent gene flow has occurred from the Atlantic Ocean into the Indian Ocean via the Cape of Good Hope. We also found compelling genetic evidence that green turtles nesting at the rookeries of the South Mozambique Channel (SMC) and those nesting in the North Mozambique Channel (NMC) belong to separate genetic stocks. Furthermore, the SMC could be subdivided in two different genetic stocks, one in Europa and the other one in Juan de Nova. We suggest that this particular genetic pattern along the Mozambique Channel is attributable to a recent colonization from the Atlantic Ocean and is maintained by oceanic conditions in the northern and southern Mozambique Channel that influence early stages in the green turtle life cycle. Amelotin: an enamel matrix protein that experienced distinct evolutionary histories in amphibians, sauropsids and mammals Auteur(s) : Gasse, Barbara Chiari, Ylenia Silvent, Jérémie Davit-Béal, Tiphaine Sire, Jean-Yves Auteurs secondaires : Evolution Paris Seine ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6 (UPMC) - Université Nice Sophia Antipolis (UNS) ; Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) - Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Department of Biology Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD BioMed Central Résumé : International audience Background: Amelotin (AMTN) is an ameloblast-secreted protein that belongs to the secretory calcium-binding phosphoprotein (SCPP) family, which originated in early vertebrates. In rodents, AMTN is expressed during the maturation stage of amelogenesis only. This expression pattern strongly differs from the spatiotemporal expression of other ameloblast-secreted SCPPs, such as the enamel matrix proteins (EMPs). Furthermore, AMTN was characterized in rodents only. In this study, we applied various approaches, including in silico screening of databases, PCRs and transcriptome sequencing to characterize AMTN sequences in sauropsids and amphibians, and compared them to available mammalian and coelacanth sequences. Results: We showed that (i) AMTN is tooth (enamel) specific and underwent pseudogenization in toothless turtles and birds, and (ii) the AMTN structure changed during tetrapod evolution. To infer AMTN function, we studied spatiotemporal expression of AMTN during amelogenesis in a salamander and a lizard, and compared the results with available expression data from mouse. We found that AMTN is expressed throughout amelogenesis in non-mammalian tetrapods, in contrast to its expression limited to enamel maturation in rodents. Conclusions: Taken together our findings suggest that AMTN was primarily an EMP. Its functions were conserved in amphibians and sauropsids while a change occurred early in the mammalian lineage, modifying its expression pattern during amelogenesis and its gene structure. These changes likely led to a partial loss of AMTN function and could have a link with the emergence of prismatic enamel in mammals. During centuries the marine turtles were considered an important resource for food and protein and for the coastal populations and were also a source of revenue .Today they are a major composition of many cultures around the world and have a very symbolical signification for some island populations in the lesser Antilles. The rarefactions of those turtles give them a certain interest for tourists for example and for ecotourism experiences. This symbolical aspect can participate in the protection of oceans and coral reefs this new context their value economical and environmental is re- considered.
Marine resources are a wealth of great economic importance for many countries in the world. Due to the action of man, these resources undergo embrittlement and rarification among others to pollution, overfishing, urbanization, intensive ... Added to this list in recent years, the global warming that affects a significantly marine biodiversity. Yet the international response to this degradation, beyond the fact that they are shy, is rare. It will therefore fall back on solutions to the global fight against global warming taken by the international community to counter this degradation. Martinique possesses 55 km2 of coral reefs, 50 of sea grass and 20 of mangroves. These three ecosystems produce services for a value estimated at 250 millions € per year. About 60% of this value originates from directs uses such as recreational activities (diving, excursions, beach activities, etc.) induce by tourism and fishery. Ecosystem services (indirect uses) such as coastal protection, carbon sequestration, biomass production and water purification are significant since their sum value reaches annually 94 millions € (38% of the total economic value). Non-use value links to the improvement of the health of coastal ecosystem is estimated to 10 millions € per year. At the ecosystem level, sea grass and mangrove contribute the more (per km2) to the wealth creation (respectively 2,16 millions €/km2, 1,87 million €/km2 against 1,78 million €/km2 for the reefs). They need therefore to benefit from protection and management measures in the same magnitude than the reefs already received. This study allows a distinct approach to thinking about the marine resources in a protected area. Indeed, marine ecosystems are essential, especially as they are in New Caledonia, particularly in terms of cultural heritage. It is mainly Kanak who live on the East Coast of the North Province, where the Community and WWF collaborate on the installation of several marine protected areas (MPAs). So far, the Kanak customary management allowed a relative preservation of these ecosystems in a coastal area not subject to the pressures of urbanization, tourism and navigation. The study aims to highlight the issues surrounding the establishment of MPAs and opportunities for local development on the marine environment and local populations. This is to see how this experiment is considered by the various actors (State, Northern Province, associations, etc. customary). And to consider the mechanisms of governance. Effects of Oceanic Salinity on Body Condition in Sea Snakes Auteur(s) : Brischoux, Francois Rolland, Virginie Bonnet, Xavier Caillaud, Matthieu Shine, Richard Éditeur(s) : Oxford Univ Press Inc Résumé : Since the transition from terrestrial to marine environments poses strong osmoregulatory and energetic challenges, temporal and spatial fluctuations in oceanic salinity might influence salt and water balance (and hence, body condition) in marine tetrapods. We assessed the effects of salinity on three species of sea snakes studied by mark-recapture in coral-reef habitats in the Neo-Caledonian Lagoon. These three species include one fully aquatic hydrophiine (Emydocephalus annulatus), one primarily aquatic laticaudine (Laticauda laticaudata), and one frequently terrestrial laticaudine (Laticauda saintgironsi). We explored how oceanic salinity affected the snakes' body condition across various temporal and spatial scales relevant to each species' ecology, using linear mixed models and multimodel inference. Mean annual salinity exerted a consistent and negative effect on the body condition of all three snake species. The most terrestrial taxon (L. saintgironsi) was sensitive to salinity over a short temporal scale, corresponding to the duration of a typical marine foraging trip for this species. In contrast, links between oceanic salinity and body condition in the fully aquatic E. annulatus and the highly aquatic L. laticaudata were strongest at a long-term (annual) scale. The sophisticated salt-excreting systems of sea snakes allow them to exploit marine environments, but do not completely overcome the osmoregulatory challenges posed by oceanic conditions. Future studies could usefully explore such effects in other secondarily marine taxa such as seabirds, turtles, and marine mammals. Remote High-Definition Rotating Video Enables Fast Spatial Survey of Marine Underwater Macrofauna and Habitats Auteur(s) : Pelletier, Dominique Leleu, Kevin Mallet, Delphine Mou-tham, Gerard Herve, Gilles Boureau, Matthieu Guilpart, Nicolas Éditeur(s) : Public Library Science Résumé : Observing spatial and temporal variations of marine biodiversity from non-destructive techniques is central for understanding ecosystem resilience, and for monitoring and assessing conservation strategies, e.g. Marine Protected Areas. Observations are generally obtained through Underwater Visual Censuses (UVC) conducted by divers. The problems inherent to the presence of divers have been discussed in several papers. Video techniques are increasingly used for observing underwater macrofauna and habitat. Most video techniques that do not need the presence of a diver use baited remote systems. In this paper, we present an original video technique which relies on a remote unbaited rotating remote system including a high definition camera. The system is set on the sea floor to record images. These are then analysed at the office to quantify biotic and abiotic sea bottom cover, and to identify and count fish species and other species like marine turtles. The technique was extensively tested in a highly diversified coral reef ecosystem in the South Lagoon of New Caledonia, based on a protocol covering both protected and unprotected areas in major lagoon habitats. The technique enabled to detect and identify a large number of species, and in particular fished species, which were not disturbed by the system. Habitat could easily be investigated through the images. A large number of observations could be carried out per day at sea. This study showed the strong potential of this non obtrusive technique for observing both macrofauna and habitat. It offers a unique spatial coverage and can be implemented at sea at a reasonable cost by non-expert staff. As such, this technique is particularly interesting for investigating and monitoring coastal biodiversity in the light of current conservation challenges and increasing monitoring needs. Nesting Phenology of Marine Turtles: Insights from a Regional Comparative Analysis on Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) Auteur(s) : Dalleau, Mayeul Ciccione, Stephane Mortimer, Jeanne A. Garnier, Julie Benhamou, Simon Bourjea, Jerome Éditeur(s) : Public Library Science Résumé : Changes in phenology, the timing of seasonal activities, are among the most frequently observed responses to environmental disturbances and in marine species are known to occur in response to climate changes that directly affects ocean temperature, biogeochemical composition and sea level. We examined nesting seasonality data from long-term studies at 8 green turtle (Chelonia mydas) rookeries that include 21 specific nesting sites in the South-West Indian Ocean (SWIO). We demonstrated that temperature drives patterns of nesting seasonality at the regional scale. We found a significant correlation between mean annual Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and dates of peak nesting with rookeries exposed to higher SST having a delayed nesting peak. This supports the hypothesis that temperature is the main factor determining peak nesting dates. We also demonstrated a spatial synchrony in nesting activity amongst multiple rookeries in the northern part of the SWIO (Aldabra, Glorieuses, Mohéli, Mayotte) but not with the eastern and southern rookeries (Europa, Tromelin), differences which could be attributed to females with sharply different adult foraging conditions. However, we did not detect a temporal trend in the nesting peak date over the study period or an inter-annual relation between nesting peak date and SST. The findings of our study provide a better understanding of the processes that drive marine species phenology. The findings will also help to predict their ability to cope with climate change and other environmental perturbations. Despite demonstrating this spatial shift in nesting phenology, no trend in the alteration of nesting dates over more than 20 years was found. A few kilometres from Oran, the coastal area of Ain el Turck previously known for its beautiful beaches, has suffered in recent decades uncontrolled urbanization affecting mainly the maritime public domain (DPM). Currently, the upper parts of beaches like St. Roch, Paradis, Trouville, Bouisseville or lined with villas from one to two floors, garages for boats and large hotels. Encroachment on these areas yet protected by several laws, participated in the erosion of the sandbank and the decline of seaside tourism. This reflected a marked difficulty in managing and protecting this fragile and coveted space. Our study of the coastal area of Ain el Turck will address four points: the relationship between 'concretisation' of shoreline and shoreline change, the evolution of urbanization and occupation strategies, types of competition between different users on the ownership of coastal land and finally, the difficulties in protecting the maritime public by managing services. The method of work is essentially based on two approaches:the first is the comparison between several aerial photographs at different dates, for identifying changes affecting the natural shoreline in relation to the evolution of the urbanization of the coast. The second is conducting interviews with stakeholders in the area and analysis of speeches made by various interest groups, often in conflict. The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, located in the extreme south of the Lesser Antilles, is an exception in the Caribbean region. Indeed, unlike other Caribbean islands, the economy of Trinidad and Tobago depends almost exclusively on industrial and gas sector, while tourism and agriculture involved a small share of gross domestic product of the country.Taking advantage of a favorable international context, Trinidad known for two decades continued economic growth that allows it to display high social indices, but its economy keeps the characteristics of a Small State Islander Developing and faces problems of unemployment and poverty. It’s in this context that the government has initiated a policy of economic diversification identifying several areas of activity, including tourism, likely to reduce poverty. The objective of this study is to analyze the impacts and limitations of pro-poor tourism actions in a small island state through an experiment conducted in the village of Matura in the Northeast of Trinidad. Fishers’ Job Satisfaction in the Caribbean Auteur(s) : Monnereau, Iris Ruiz, Victor Pollnac, Richard Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : A variety of researchers have carried out job satisfaction studies in fisheries during the last decades. Results have shown the significant role of self-actualization in the determination of job satisfaction which backs the reasoning that fishing is more than just a livelihood. This paper is based in a job satisfaction study carried out in three lobster fisheries in the Caribbean. Lobster fishing (Panulirus argus) is an important economic activity throughout the Caribbean Basin, both as a source of income and employment for the local population as well as foreign exchange for national governments. These countries differ significantly in structure of the fishery as well as governance arrangements. In this paper we wish to address the relation between these structural differences and fishers’ job satisfaction across the three countries. Results indicate fishers’ job satisfaction is significantly higher in small-scale fisheries. The ongoing evolutions of the cultural environment of Guianese people promote awareness of the expectations of local people and their social demand for public reading. This should eventually lead to the emergence of a public informed despite the influence of oral tradition. Therefore, given the complexity of the sociological field, it is necessary to change the players' strategies and adapt to social realities and daily lives of the people concerned. What social representations should the performances of actors be based on in order to reach these objectives? The answer to that question will be found thanks to an objective look at the social reality of the local populations. Algae as sea resource have not been largely explored in Geography, yet it offers the potential for economic development. Macro-algae are cultivated for food purposes and they can substitute for fishing. Micro-algae can be valued as biomass: “nutraceutics”, Omega 3, biofuel. These various utilizations raise a question: are algae a key to a sustainable development in intertropical islands? We shall present Algaculture on a global scale, while emphasizing its low importance in the Caribbean. Then we shall show how algaculture can be part of a process of sustainable development by providing revenue to rural communities (Lesser Antilles). Finally, in a comparative approach (with the US), we shall see that the Caribbean Region has a number of assets for algaculture that make it suitable for sustainable projects and infrastructures: solar exposure, high temperatures, close to the US research centers. Risk Management and Disaster Mitigation: A Case Study Applied to Haiti Auteur(s) : G. Granvorka, Charley Saffache, Pascal Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : Natural hazards do have impacts on development. Of heavy consequences on both the human life and the economic development these impacts are critical in most of the Caribbean islands in general and specifically in Haiti. Thus, there is an urgent need to implement strategies aiming at reducing risk for lessening losses. By implementing well designed risk management strategies vulnerability can be reduced, and as a consequence, investment and employment can be protected. Even so preparedness to sustainable development is at the global Agenda, with regards to the specific case of Haiti, we assume that, at present, the country is not at all involved in such a long run strategy. Government attention is focused on immediate urgencies to be solved. By questioning the particular case of tourism, we show the positive impact of risk management strategies on growth using a Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA). A Review of Caribbean Ecosytems and Fishery Resources Using ECOPATH Models Auteur(s) : Smikle, S.G. Christensen, V. Aiken, K.A. Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : This paper provides a review of ecosystems modelling within the Caribbean using the Ecopath approach and software tools. The review is not intended to provide a direct comparison of the modelled ecosystems attributes and performance, as this would require having access to the models and the data sets used to build the models. Rather, a general comparison is made of the outputs of the models and the various authors’ descriptions of ecosystem attributes.
