This image shows a road winding through the mountains of Antigua. The highest mountain peak in Antigua is Boggy Peak at 1,319 feet (402 meters) above sea level. In August 2009, the peak was renamed Mount Obama in honor of the first black American President. The ceremony also coincided with President Barack Obama’s 48th birthday.

Regina, originally built in 1939, is docked at the port. S.S. Regina was christened S.S. Panama for Panama Line, formerly Panama Railroad Steamship Line. In 1941, the United States Army Transport Service converted her to a troop carrier and renamed her James Parker. By 1957, she was sold to American President Lines, formerly Dollar Steamship Lines. She was renamed President Hoover to replace another of American’s steamships by the same name. In 1964, she was acquired by Chandris Cruises and renamed Regina. She was scrapped in 1985 as S.S. Regina Prima. Passengers wait in automobiles, such as the Ford Zodiac, as the traffic is surrounded by pedestrians. A Royal Grenada Police Force officer, dressed in a white helmet and light blue shirt, is standing near one of the port facilities. In distance is a view of buildings in Saint George’s including the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception which dates back to 1818. Résumé : Dès l’arrivée des premiers Africains déportés sur le sol américain, la vie religieuse est devenue un moyen de transcender un quotidien mortifère. Leur chemin est parsemé de longues journées de travail forcé, de conditions de vie inhumaines, de châtiments et de sévices en tous genres. La pratique religieuse leur donne une fenêtre sur un autre monde. D’année en année, le culte religieux deviendra un espace de relâchement, de liberté et d’expression unique. L’église chrétienne s’est comportée comme un mouvement social pour la communauté africaine-américaine. Elle est devenue un lieu de liberté qui, progressivement, supportera les fondations de l’expression politique et de la demande de justice sociale. Sa fonction pivotale s’explique également par le rôle de la religion dans la fondation de la société et la vie politique étasuniennes. Entre les idéaux d’une nation divisée, ivre de liberté et ceux d’une communauté poussée dans ses retranchements, cette contribution se propose d’analyser la naissance de l’église africaine-américaine durant l’esclavage. Ensuite, je me pencherai sur l’impact de cette dynamique dans la Caraïbe à travers la vie de George Leile, premier missionnaire africain-américain en Jamaïque.
From the moment the first Africans were brought to the Americas, religious life has become a way to transcend a humiliating and desperate life. Their lives were made of long days of forced work, inhuman living conditions, punishments and ill treatments of all sorts. Religious practice gave them a window onto another world. Over the years, it has slowly become a space of freedom and unique expression. The Black Church acted as a social movement on behalf of the African-american community. It has become a place of freedom which gradually has supported the foundations of their political expression and their demand of social justice. Understandably, as religion has always played a central role in North America, it is no wonder that it would play a central function in the liberation of slaves. Between the ideals of a divided nation and those of a marginalized community, the article analyzes the birth of the African-american church during slavery. Then, it examines the impact of African-american protestantism in the Caribbean through the life of George Leile, the first African-american missionary in Jamaica.

By 1755, the Good Hope Estate was formed through a land grant, given to Colonel Thomas Williams, who built the first great house on the site, which was a sugar estate. In 1767, the property and surrounding estates was purchased by John Tharp, then the largest land and slave owner in Jamaica. The plantation is close to the Martha Brae River and the Cockpit Mountains. The estate became a hotel in 1912 after it was purchased by an American banker. In the foreground of the picture, a citrus grove behind a wire fence. Slide labeled Hope Plantation.

Résumé : Le bassin du fleuve Sixaola est un bassin transfrontalier partagé entre le Costa Rica et le Panama. Localisé sur la façade caraïbe de l’isthme centraméricain, il est depuis une vingtaine d’années considérées par les organismes de coopération et les organisations non gouvernementales comme un espace privilégié pour la coopération en matière environnementale. Ce bassin concentre en effet d’importantes richesses naturelles et culturelles propres à cette façade caraïbe. Dans le même temps, on y constate une importante vulnérabilité sociale et des dégradations environnementales croissantes, d’autant plus qu’on trouve autour de ce bassin des activités productives polluantes (monocultures, tourisme, etc.), ainsi que les villages les plus pauvres des deux pays.Cet article cherche à analyser comment, à côté des mécanismes d’intégration et des initiatives appuyées par les États, cet espace connaît aussi de nombreux projets et programmes de coopération menés par des organismes internationaux et des organisations non gouvernementales (ONG). Ces projets visent principalement à accroître la coopération transfrontalière pour la conservation et la gestion environnementale.En revanche, leur rôle est de plus en plus remis en cause par des acteurs locaux qui affirment que ces organismes « transnationaux » déplacent les États et imposent des projets qui ne prennent pas en compte les réalités et les besoins locaux tout en développant des discours « hégémoniques » sur la gestion intégrée des bassins transfrontaliers, le changement climatique, entre autres.
The Sixaola River basin is shared by Costa Rica and Panama. On the Caribbean side of the Central American Isthmus, it has been considered by cooperation organisms and non-governmental organizations as a privileged space for environmental cooperation for the past 20 years. This basin in fact concentrates an important amount of natural and cultural heritage that is endemic to this side of the Caribbean. At the same time, one can observe increasing social vulnerability and environmental degradation related to the presence of the poorest communities of both Panama and Costa Rica within the basin, and to polluting activities (monoculture, tourism, etc.) carried out around it.This article analyzes how this space is the locus of State integration mechanisms and other initiatives, at the same time that it harbors international organism and non-governmental cooperation programs. These latter projects claim to increase trans-border cooperation for conservation and environmental management.But their role is increasingly being contested by local stakeholders, who more and more claim that these “transnational” organisms displace States and impose projects that do not take into account local realities and needs, while developing “hegemonic” discourses on integrated management of trans-border basins and climate change, among other issues.

Cruise tourism is a sector that is rapidly expanding (16 million passengers in 2011). Today, cruising remains an essentially American affair, dominated by North American clients whose preferred destination is the Caribbean Sea. American cruise circuits continue to extend and diversify from the Panama Canal to the edge of Alaska. Meanwhile, cruises strengthen their position on the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas and has launched in East Asia from shores of the South China Sea to major rivers. Between continuity and recomposition, the cruise industry faces several challenges such as the limits of overcapacity (more than 6,000 passengers on board), its relationship with the host territories (ports of call), and the renewal of the “cruise” products.
Le tourisme de croisière est un secteur d’activité en pleine expansion (16 millions de passagers en 2011). De nos jours, la croisière reste encore une affaire essentiellement américaine, dominée par les clientèles nord-américaines, et dont le champ spatial privilégié est la mer des Caraïbes. Les circuits américains de la croisière s’étendent et se diversifient, du canal du Panama aux confins de l’Alaska. Parallèlement, la croisière conforte sa position sur les mers méditerranéenne et baltique et se déploie en Asie orientale, des rivages de la mer de Chine aux grands fleuves. Entre permanences et recompositions, l’industrie de la croisière doit relever plusieurs défis tels que les limites du gigantisme (plus de 6 000 passagers à bord), ses relations avec les territoires d’accueil (les ports d’escales), le renouvellement du produit « croisière ».

Résumé : Since Last Glacial Maximum (23-19 ka), Earth climate warming and deglaciation occurred in two major steps (Bolling-Allerod and Preboreal), interrupted by a short cooling interval referred to as the Younger Dryas (12.5-11.5 ka B. P.). In this study, three cores (MV-33, MV-66, and MD-40) collected in the central part of Pandora Trough (Gulf of Papua) have been analyzed, and they reveal a detailed sedimentary pattern at millennial timescale. Siliciclastic turbidites disappeared during the Bolling-Allerod and Preboreal intervals to systematically reoccur during the Younger Dryas interval. Subsequent to the final disappearance of the siliciclastic turbidites a calciturbidite occurred during meltwater pulse 1B. The Holocene interval was characterized by a lack of siliciclastic turbidites, relatively high carbonate content, and fine bank-derived aragonitic sediment. The observed millennial timescale sedimentary variability can be explained by sea level fluctuations. During the Last Glacial Maximum, siliciclastic turbidites were numerous when the lowstand coastal system was located along the modern shelf edge. Although they did not occur during the intervals of maximum flooding of the shelf (during meltwater pulses 1A and 1B), siliciclastic turbidites reappear briefly during the Younger Dryas, an interval when sea level rise slowed, stopped, or perhaps even fell. The timing of the calciturbidite coincides with the first reflooding of Eastern Fields Reef, an atoll that remained exposed for most of the glacial stages.

Located east of Guadeloupe, the island of La Désirade exhibits the oldest rocks of the Lesser Antilles arc and the eastern Caribbean plate. An old magmatic basement is composed of (1) late Jurassic ophiolitic complex with meta-basaltic pillow lavas and interbedded radiolarites, (2) acid igneous complex comprising meta-quartz-diorite and meta-rhyolitic lavas flows, and (3) meta-diabasic/microdioritic dyke swarm complex. We present and discuss the discovery of synmetamorphic thrust tectonics in this island. Based on detailed structural analysis we evidenced two main compressive events. The first event (D1) is characterized by pervasive folding associated with thrust development. In the northeastern part of the island, a major thrust fault, the Grand Abaque Thrust, has been discovered which displaces for several kilometers the acid igneous complex onto the ophiolitic unit. The second deformation event (D2) is featured by a main pervasive cleavage S2 observed at the regional scale associated with upright folding (F2) and by the development of two sets of conjugated steeply dipping strike-slip shear zones, dextral 130°N and sinistral 20°N striking, respectively. Microstructural observations indicate that Greenschist facies metamorphism is clearly contemporaneous with the development of D1 and D2 superimposed tectonic structures. Ar/Ar geochronology was performed on two bulk of adularia minerals sampled in the northeast volcanic complex within a deformed zone related to a D2 event. These analyses yield well-defined and concordant plateau ages at 106.2 ± 1.7 Ma and 107.2 ± 1.8 Ma. Thus, shortening and thickening tectonics occurred during Lower Cretaceous (Albian). In the available framework of Caribbean geodynamics, the synmetamorphic thrust tectonics we discovered in the French Lesser Antilles is related to the collision between an Aptian-Albian oceanic plateau and the Andean-Cordilleran east-dipping subduction zone. Our results support subduction polarity reversal during Lower Cretaceous.
