Résumé : Considerable interest is presently being shown in research, design and practical application of composite materials within Fincantieri Merchant Shipbuilding Division. This paper is intended to discuss the state-of-the-art and the innovations in hull, outfitting and accommodation applications, where traditional steel or light alloy can be successfully replaced by composites. The impact on design and production is outlined, with an overview of the economic effects of these materials on technology, production and safety requirements, which remain an open subject for the future possible developments.
Un intérêt considérable est porté à l'heure actuelle à la recherche, la conception et l'application pratique des matériaux composites dans la Division Merchant Shipbuilding de Fincantien. Cette communication a pour objet de présenter l'état de l'art et les innovations dans les applications pour les coques, équipements et cabines, avec la perspective de l'impact économique de ces matériaux sur la technologie, la production et les exigences de sécurité, qui reste un sujet de développements futurs.

Résumé : This article considers economic risks which could potentially threaten the competitiveness and sustainability of cruise destinations such as New Zealand. Included in this article are those economic risks which are factored into cruise lines’ decisions as to whether to send their ships to a destination and the destination’s capacity to host these ships and their passengers. A cruise life-cycle framework has been developed to provide a structure for discussion: (a) product development; (b) infrastructure development; (c) distribution; (d) consumption; and (e) disposal. Five strategies for managing economic risks are presented: the formation of an adequately funded peak committee; the cultivation of a cruise culture; the provision of appropriate training; the creation of a national cruise manual; and the design, development and implementation of a cruise brand. Each of these strategies is based on an approach to risk management which calls for a positive view of risk and how it can be transformed into competitive success.
Cet article examine les risques économiques qui pourraient potentiellement menacer la compétitivité et la durabilité des destinations de croisière telle que la Nouvelle-Zélande. Les risques économiques inclus dans cet article relèvent des décisions compagnies de croisières que d'envoyer ou non leurs navires vers une destination et la capacité de la destination pour accueillir ces navires et leurs passagers. Un cadrage du cycle de vie de la croisière a été établi pour fournir de base de discussion: le développement de produits (a), le développement des infrastructures (b), la distribution(c) ; la consommation(d), et l'élimination(e). Cinq stratégies pour gérer les risques économiques sont présentées : la formation d'un comité de financement de pointe adéquat, le développement d'une culture de la croisière, la fourniture d'une formation appropriée, la création d'un manuel de croisière nationale et la conception, le développement et la mise en œuvre d'une marque « croisière ». Chacune de ces stratégies repose sur une approche de gestion des risques qui appelle à une vision positive du risque et de la façon dont il peut être appréhendé avec succès dans la compétition.

This paper presents results from the first excavations on the Saintes Bay’s wreck, Guadeloupe, French West Indies. Thewreck may be linked to the loss of Anemone, a French schooner built in 1823 in Bayonne and used as a custom ship inGuadeloupe. The July 2015 archaeological project surveyed the site. Discrete trenches were excavated to identify both shipwreck material culture and ship structure, and compare this to archival records; and facilitate archaeological interpretationof the site, with regard to accounts of its loss, design plans, construction details, etc.
