INRA, CFCS Description : Banana and plantain (Musa spp) are important foreign exchange earners in Guyana and the Windward Islands of the Caribbean. Black Sigatoka Disease (BSD) also referred to as black leaf streak disease is one of the most destructive diseases of banana and plantain and is present within the region. In Guyana within two years following its introduction in 2008, the industry was totally decimated, recording a 100% decline, turning the country to a net banana importer. Also, from 2009 ? 2012 the disease spread in the Windward Islands causing as much as 100% decrease in the export of banana. The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus, Mycosphaerella fijiensis (anamorph Pseudocercospora fijiensis) and is aggressive, challenging to control and results in enormous crop damage if left uncontrolled. In an effort to develop an integrated management approach to the disease the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) with financial assistance from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) is evaluating five FHIA banana and plantain accessions and eight IITA plantain accessions for tolerance to BSD. The evaluation is presently conducted in four Caribbean countries, Dominica, Guyana, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines. In each country, four distinct agro- ecological zones were selected for the trial evaluation blocks and using a randomized block design, four blocks were established in each country. Five FHIA accessions: FHIA-01, FHIA-03, FHIA-18, FHIA-21 and FHIA-23 are being evaluated in Dominica, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines whereas, plantain accessions: PITA-17, PITA-21, PITA-22, PITA-23, PITA-24 and PITA-26 are to be evaluated in Guyana for tolerance to the disease. Cavendish are used as regional controls and as borders rows to increase disease pressure. The disease parameters evaluated are youngest leaf spotted (YLS), disease development time (DDT), leaf emission rate (LER), disease severity at 6 months, bunch emergence and harvest, and index of standing leaves. Agronomic data; days from planting to flowering, bunch weight, number of hands in bunch, average weight of hands and average number of fingers per hand and bunch, as well as organoleptic characteristics of both cooked and ripe fruits are also evaluated. The early data collection, of the FHIA only accessions, show trends in the disease tolerance and agronomic performance as well as their adaptability in the different agro-ecological zone. The trends indicate better disease tolerance of FHIA varieties with higher leaf counts before, at bunching and at harvest. The organoleptic test shows a preference to FHIA 03 and FHIA 21. INRA, CFCS Description : In the new context of the agro-ecological transition, present agricultural systems will have to produce more and better in a more constraint world. Mixed crop livestock systems (MCLS) represent sound alternative ways to progressively achieve these goals through crop-livestock integration (CLI). CLI exploits the synergies between cropping and livestock systems through organic fertilization with manure or plant association, use of crop residues to feed livestock, .... It offers many opportunities to improve productivity, as well as to increase resource use efficiency and improve the resilience of the whole farming system. In the scientific literature, authors advocate the interest of MLCS and CLI, based on theoretical considerations, modelling and empirical evidence from local case studies. But these studies do not clearly identify the respective roles of diversity of activities and CLI management practices in improving performances at the level of the whole farming system. Our aim was thus to assess CLI at farm scale in a range of MCLS and to explain farm performances by analyzing the combination of activities and the level of integration. We conducted our analyses in Guadeloupe, (French West Indies), where MCLS and CLI are complex but important challenges for local agricultural. In order to analyze CLI in a holistic and systemic way, we applied a method traditionally used in ecology, ecological network analysis, to study the structure, functioning and performance of agrosystems. This method was implemented on a range of Guadeloupian MCLS where CLI practices where identified. Nitrogen was retained to conduct the analysis due to its central role for both animal and vegetal productions. The ENA method allows an estimation of productivity, resilience, efficiency, productivity and self- sufficiency of the flows network. Our results show that 1/ efficiency and resilience appear correlated to the complexity and intensity of the network of flows; 2/ efficiency and resiliency are positively correlated when we consider them in terms of N flows; 3/ in the Guadeloupian context, CLI concerns mainly specific practices, as feeding pigs with a wide range of crop residues and organic fertilization of small market gardens and plots used to grow tubers. But at whole system level, CLI remains rare and mainly depends on conventional management practices as mineral fertilization and animal complementation of some farming activities as sugar cane, cattle breeding and banana. Moreover, the combination of productions implemented determines the potential of CLI and related performances linked to relative N efficiency of each production. Consequently, performance and especially efficiency and self-sufficiency depend more on the nature of the activity than on CLI management practices. There is still a gap between theoretical studies and CLI in practice, even though CLI is more complicated than simple flows and provides other services and functions. INRA, CFCS Description : Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) has been a major factor inhibiting the expansion of papaya production in South Florida, USA. The University of Florida has developed a transgenic papaya line X17-2, which is tolerant to PRSV and is suitable for commercial production. The expected yield improvement can be as high as 380%. In spite of the yield potential, some fruit growers may be skeptical about adopting this improved GM cultivars for a variety of reasons. Consequently, a probit model with data from a survey of likely producers was used to identify those factors that may influence the adoption of the new technology. The results indicate that education level, farm size, and income derived from agriculture were among the factors likely to increase adoption of the technology. The findings suggest that a targeted education program will go a far way in increasing rate of adoption of the technology. An early Hav-a-Tampa cigar label. Auteur(s) : Eli Witt Cigar Company ( Manufacturer ) Auteurs secondaires : Cigar City Collection Résumé : In many old photographs of downtown Tampa a very close scrutiny will uncover signs hanging from the buildings over the sidewalks with just three letters "ELI". Eli Witt distributed all of the leading brands of cigars manufactured in Tampa as well as brands manufactured in other cities and was very successful in developing sales of these brands. One very serious problem arose out of this success. It seemed that as soon as he had worked a brand of cigars up to where it was in demand, the manufacturer began selling direct to the retailers or to other wholesale firms in the area. This is when Mr. Eli realized that he needed a cigar brand of his own that he could control.
He reached this goal in 1918 when he arranged to purchase the Havatampa Cigar Company along with financial help of two of his associates, W. L. Van Dyke who was employed by him in 1907, and D. H. Woodbery whom he had employed in 1910, along with some relatives of these two. (Funding) Funded in part by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Ephemeral Cities Project. 1). A Drawing of the Emilio Pons Cigar Factory. Auteurs secondaires : Cigar City Collection Résumé : This cigar-making industry has contributed materially to the development and growth of Tampa during the last five years, and it promises much greater benefit in the future. It was in October, 1885, that Martinez Ybor & Co., who began manufacturing in Havana in 1854, and afterward put up a large factory in Key West, came to Tampa to investigate the resources and advantages offered for cigar-making. They soon afterward purchased forty acres of land in the Fourth Ward, cleared it of the pines, wild-oats and gophers, and built a factory, a large boarding-house or hotel, and several small cottages for the workmen whom they brought from Key West and Havana. The venture proved a success from the start and improvements were added. The original factory, a wooden structure, is now the opera house, and a large brick factory has succeeded the first one, where the daily output of the 450 cigar makers employed is40,000 to 50,000 cigars. Then came Sanchez & Haya, Emilio Pons, and others, and all declare that they are doing an excellent business. We used data from >200 000 mother-child pairs enrolled in 13 European birth cohorts and compared employed versus non-employed women. Among employees, we defined groups of occupations representing the main sectors of employment for women where potential reproductive hazards are considered to be present. The comparison group comprised all other employed women not included in the occupational sector being assessed. We performed meta-analyses of cohort-specific estimates and explored heterogeneity. Employees had a lower risk of preterm delivery than non-employees [adjusted odds ratio (OR adj) 0.86, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.81-0.91]. Working in most of the occupational sectors studied was not associated with adverse birth outcomes. Being employed as a nurse was associated with lower risk SGA infants (OR adj0.91, 95% CI 0.84-0.99) whereas food industry workers had an increased risk of preterm delivery (OR adj1.50, 95% CI 1.12-2.02). There was little evidence for heterogeneity between cohorts. This study suggests that, overall, employment during pregnancy is associated with a reduction in the risk of preterm birth and that work in certain occupations may affect pregnancy outcomes. This exploratory study provides an important platform on which to base further prospective studies focused on the potential consequences of maternal occupational exposures during pregnancy on child development. Turbidity retrieval and monitoring of Danube Delta waters using multi-sensor optical remote sensing data: An integrated view from the delta plain lakes to the western-northwestern Black Sea coastal zone Auteur(s) : Guttler, Fabio Niculescu, Simona Gohin, Francis Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Inc Résumé : Based on multi-sensor optical remote sensing techniques, more than 80 medium and high spatial resolution satellite images were used for studying the turbidity patterns of Danube Delta waters. During a selected 4-year temporal coverage (2006 to 2009), the turbidity gradients were simultaneously analyzed in the delta plain lakes and in the Black Sea western-northwestern coastal zone. Two distinct, but complementary, methodologies for retrieving turbidity were employed, one for the lakes and the other for the coastal zone. After comparing the turbidity satellite-derived turbidity products with in-situ measurements, the inter-comparability of the products was independently verified. Then, through an integrative analysis, the initial hypothesis of turbidity control by the Danube River inputs was tested in both areas (Delta plain and coastal zone). Seasonal turbidity patterns were identified together with the mechanisms responsible for its important temporal and spatial variability. Reciprocal contributions derived from the association of multi-scale satellite products were highlighted. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Some population groups such as men who have sex with men (MSM), especially those involved in transactional sex, are thought to be particularly vulnerable to HIV but few data exist to help characterize their health-related needs and thus implement relevant prevention interventions. To fill this knowledge gap, we used data collected from an HIV/AIDS Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviours and Practices survey conducted in 2012 among MSM living in the French Antilles and French Guiana and recruited through snowball sampling. Our objectives were to compare social and demographic characteristics and sexual behaviours between MSM engaging in transactional sex and MSM not engaging in transactional sex and to identify factors associated with transactional sex involvement using a logistic regression model. A total of 733 MSM were interviewed, 21% of whom reported to undergo transactional sex. Their behaviour and social and demographic characteristics were different from other MSMs’ and they were more exposed to factors that are recognized to potentiate HIVvulnerability, at the individual, community, network and structural levels. The variables positively associated with sex trade involvement were having ever consumed drug (OR = 2.84 [1.23–6.52]; p = .002), having a greater number of sex partners than the median (OR = 8.31 [4.84–14.30]; p < .001), having experienced intimate partner violence (OR = 1.72 [0.99–3.00]; p = .053) and having undergone physical aggression because of sexual orientation (OR = 2.84 [1.23–6.52];p = .014). Variables negatively associated with sex trade involvement were being older (OR = 0.93 [0.90–0.97] per year; p = .001), having a stable administrative situation (OR = 0.10 [0.06–0.19]; p < .001), having a stable housing (OR = 0.29 [0.15–0.55]; p < .001) and being employed full-time (OR = 0.29 [1.23–6.52]; p = .002). Activities of Cruise-Ship Employees in Cozumel, Mexico Auteur(s) : Marie Van Broeck, Anne Dierckx, Guy Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : Despite the increasing importance of cruise tourism worldwide, very little is known about the lives of cruise-ship employees, and how they use their free time at the ports of call. This paper presents the results of a small-scale exploratory research on the activities of cruise crew and staff members on the island of Cozumel, Mexico, an important port of call for Caribbean routes. Conducted in 2009, qualitative research for this paper included participant observation and several informal conversations and semi-structured interviews with twenty cruise-ship employees and six owners and employees of local businesses. Our conclusions confirm other authors' findings and provide fresh information on the factors that determine these individuals' choices of activities, places and company. Availability of time and money depends on each worker's place in the labor hierarchy, but choices are also influenced by cultural background. More in-depth research will be needed at the demand as well as the offer sides to complement these preliminary findings. The management of Norway Lobster and Hake fisheries can be considered as the most important issue in the Gascogne gulf. Calculation methods used to evaluate prediction variations under various efforts and mesh constraints all pinpoint to the crucial role narrow mesh fishing plays in Hakes' Northern stock status. The involvement of Gascogne gulf Norway Lobster fisheries regarding Hakes over exploitation seems over dimensioned when comparing the size of both of these stocks. Hake stocks spread from Northern Great Britain to Northern Spain, while Norway Lobster stocks are located in the Gascogne gulf's mud flats. The biological solution is well known and consists in globally increasing mesh nets to 80mm which would bring up Hakes yield to its most. It would be unreal to pretend all parties involved in Hake stocks will come to use them. For now, it is mostly an economical issue since many vessels continue on with an exploitation scheme dating from the 60's and fish on coastal mud flats which are the most exploited zones and where their catch is detrimental to juvenile class Hakes and Norway Lobsters. Considering our limited time, this study will cover bio- economical modelisation preparation. You will therefore find a description of fisheries and an exploitation assessment based on 1986's available data.

2. 1 Fishery description
Presenting the problems and preparing ulterior analyses was first and foremost. Norway Lobster vessels supposedly, according to evaluation models used, test immature Hakes in such a manner that all stock exploitation is jeopardized. Norway Lobster distribution is closely linked to the nature of the ocean floor since it can only build its habitat on fine sediment. Hakes' habitat is not as restrictive and is linked to food supply, especially euphausiid shrimps, so they can be found on sandy and sandy-sedimental floors. Norway Lobsters are sought by a fleet of 400 to 450 ships which characteristics widely vary according to their home port. On the northern part, fisheries are close to exploitation ports where Norway Lobsters and miscellaneous catch yield is sufficient to support an older fleet. On the southern part, the structure is diversified and flexibility usually rules, more modern vessels can easily switch their target on a seasonal or daily basis. Globally, Hakes' northern stocks are slightly on the rise. This rise is probably due to global mesh size increase, even if slight and a decrease on fishing effort where immature species are caught. Norway Lobster stocks unloading is stable or slightly lower and yields, as far as northern fishery are concerned, vary and oscillate between ±15 to ±20 % at about an average of 100 kg/day. Biological parameters used in the evaluations for each species are those used in CIEM and CEE work cells. Among those parameters, those describing growth are the greatest. For Hakes, an intermediary growth equation between males and females has been used. For Norway Lobsters, both sexes are treated separately. Simulations were carried out according to 3 types of data: Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort variations. Norway Lobster vessels mesh increase. Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort decrease or mesh increasing go along in the same direction for Hake and Norway Lobster stock production (chart A and B). Lastly, a brief study on results evaluation significance was done to modify: - the size of Hake rejects by Norway Lobster vessels. The range of sizes stays the same but the amount in each class varies according to the same percentage. - Norway Lobsters growth parameters, both values used (L» = 76 mm and k = 0.11 for males, L°° = 56 mm and k = 0.14 for females) representing the "high" hypothesis. In the first case, a 20% error rate for rejects evaluation with 60 mm mesh would only bring a 3% modification rate on global stock production. Those first results are contradicting usual evaluation conclusions and it will be necessary to recalculate by modifying the size class step. In the second case, to decrease L» and increase growth speed, in time production variations remain within usual inter annual fluctuations. In all figure cases, calculations confirming greater yield for in time production through hypothetical mesh size increase to 60 mm, are definitely well founded.
National diploma vs local employability : a french paradox at work in Guadeloupe. Auteur(s) : ODACRE, Elisabeth Delcroix, Antoine Auteurs secondaires : Centre de recherches et de ressources en éducation et formation (CRREF) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) The Caribbean Academy of Sciences Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience The French education system remains highly centralized and only allows limited local adaptations for overseas territories. For example, if some laws (the last in 2013) allow the use of regional languages (e.g. Creole in the French West Indies) when they constitute a relevant contribution to the teaching, many official texts remain mainly based on the geographical, economical, historical, environment of the French mainland. We focus on some French BTS (Brevet de Technicien Supérieur / Advanced Technician Certificate), namely tourism and assistant manager, which are two important diplomas for the local development and in which microeconomic and management sciences plays a great part. The French BTS is a professional diploma prepared in two years after the “baccalauréat”, with national programs and evaluation criteria. The successful candidates are supposed to be immediately employable, especially in their local geographical environment. Thus, there exists a paradox between the national definition of the diploma and the local contexts of teaching. We discuss how teachers concretely deal with this situation on a day-to-day basis. Our hypothesis is that they act pragmatically, using their practical pedagogical content knowledge, without theoretical support for their action. In order to verify this hypothesis, we have conducted semi-structured interview with Guadeloupian teachers of the two aforementioned BTS. The main results shows that teachers adapt the national framework of the diploma, essentially by using local examples. This can be called a weak contextualization of the national texts. Indeed, these adaptations remain limited by fear of disadvantaging the students for the national exam. In addition, many context effects are shown, for example linked with local rules (concerning VAT, custom duties...) which are only partially taken into account by teachers. This demonstrates that the French educative system has not yet completely solved the opposition between national guideline and decentralization of the educational action. 19th General Meeting and Biennial Conference “Harnessing Science and Technology to create knowledge-base Economies and preserve Caribbean Ecosystems” Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago hal-01535045 https://hal.univ-antilles.fr/hal-01535045 | Partager |
Autophagy and senescence, stress responses induced by the DNA-damaging mycotoxin alternariol. Cellular stress is often connected to autophagy, and we employed the RAW264.7 macrophage model to test the hypothesis that AOH induces autophagy. Indeed, AOH treatment led to a massive increase in acidic vacuoles often observed upon autophagy induction. Moreover, expression of the autophagy marker LC3 was markedly increased and there was a strong accumulation of LC3-positive puncta. Increased autophagic activity was verified biochemically by measuring the degradation rate of long-lived proteins. Furthermore, AOH induced expression of Sestrin2 and phosphorylation of AMPK as well as reduced phosphorylation of mTOR and S6 kinase, common mediators of signaling pathways involved in autophagy. Transmission electron microscopy analyzes of AOH treated cells not only clearly displayed structures associated with autophagy such as autophagosomes and autolysosomes, but also the appearance of lamellar bodies. Prolonged AOH treatment resulted in changed cell morphology from round into more star-shaped as well as increased β-galactosidase activity. This suggests that the cells eventually entered senescence. In conclusion, our data identify here AOH as an inducer of both autophagy and senescence. These effects are suggested to be to be linked to AOH-induced DSB (via a reported effect on topoisomerase activity), resulting in an activation of p53 and the Sestrin2-AMPK-mTOR-S6K signaling pathway. These methods are a very useful tool for accurately evaluating the spatial distribution of plants or retail stores, for example (Duranton and Overman, 2008). In this paper, we introduce a new distance-based statistical measure for evaluating the spatial concentration of economic activities. To our knowledge, the m function is the first relative density function to be proposed in the economics literature. This tool supplements the typology of distance-based methods recently drawn up by Marcon and Puech (2012). By considering several theoretical and empirical examples, we show the advantages and the limits of the m function for detecting spatial structures in economics. https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01082178 hal-01082178 https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01082178 https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01082178v3/document https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01082178/file/LANG-%20MARCON-PUECH%20-%20m%20-%20HAL%2001082178v3.pdf | Partager |
