Rose Hall Great House in Saint James, Jamaica is an example of Caribbean Georgian architecture, was built in 1770 by John Palmer, Custos of Saint Thomas, and his wife (for whom the house is named). It eventually became the residence of their grandnephew, John Rose Palmer. In 1820, Palmer married Annie Mae Paterson. Following Annie Palmer's death, the plantation house became home to legendary story of the White Witch of Rose Hall. The Great House is built using cut stone on the first two levels and stucco on the third and uppermost level. This image was taken prior to the beginning of its reconstruction in the 1960s. The Manacas Iznaga Tower is located in Valle de los Ingenios in Trinidad, Cuba, which was a major center for sugar mills. The tower stands approximately 45 feet tall and was used by the sugarcane plantation owner in order to keep watch over his slaves in the fields. It was built in 1816 and stands seven stories high. The ringing of the bell signified various messages, but mostly the beginning and end of the work day for the slaves in the sugar fields. A local legend states that the tower was built by Pedro and Alejo Iznaga to house Alejo's wife, who had been unfaithful to him. The photograph also shows the remains of the Iznaga plantation, as well as several Royal Palm trees and a Poinciana tree in the background.

The construction of the House of Assembly in Spanish Town, Saint Catherine was completed by 1762. This red-brick, two-story building was the official meeting place for the Jamaican government until 1872, when Kingston took became the capital of Jamaica. As of 2013, the structure has been used as the offices for the Saint Catherine Parish Council. On August 1, 1838 Jamaica marked the day all slaves were made free. In Celebration of Emancipation, the Proclamation of Freedom was read aloud by Governor Sir Lionel Smith from the steps of King's House to the assembled masses in the square of Spanish Town, the then capital of Jamaica. Emancipation Day was made an official public holiday in 1893. In the foreground of the image is Emancipation Square, a small park bordered by a shrub with variegated leaves and surrounded by a wrought iron gate. The interior of the park has been planted with palm trees, has benches, a flag pole, and a small fountain. Slide labeled Jam. at Spanish Town.

Barbados is known for its traditional homes, “chattel houses,” because they could be disassembled and moved. Originally, these dwellings were built for plantation workers. Later, they were built by freed slaves and sharecroppers, who usually built the dwelling on blocks close to main roads so that they could be easily relocated as many were not landowners but rather tenants. Hallmarks of chattel house construction are steep gable roofs (to deflect wind and rain) and wood panel walls. The wooden jalousie windows on hinges and fretwork around windows offered shade and protection against the rain. Slide labeled Barb 17 typical house.

Quant au patrimoine culturel longtemps renié et rejeté, il y a aujourd'hui deux processus en marche : L'un recherchant à retrouver l'Inde des ancêtres et l'autre se tournant vers l'Inde actuel comme avec la culture bollywood. Par ailleurs, en martinique, il existe actuellement une reconnaissance d'intellectuels et il est organisé des festivals et des cérémonies pour commémorer et revendiquer cette identité indienne.

The dynamic model of plant growth GreenLab describes plant architecture and functional growth at the level of individual organs. Structural development is controlled by formal grammars and empirical equations compute the amount of biomass produced by the plant, and its partitioning among the growing organs, such as leaves, stems and fruits. The number of organs initiated at each time step depends on the trophic state of the plant, which is evaluated by the ratio of biomass available in plant to the demand of all the organs. The control of the plant organogenesis by this variable induces oscillations in the simulated plant behaviour. The mathematical framework of the GreenLab model allows to compute the conditions for the generation of oscillations and the value of the period according to the set of parameters. Two case-studies are presented, corresponding to emergence of oscillations associated to fructification and branching. Similar alternating patterns are commonly reported by botanists. In this article, two examples were selected: alternate patterns of fruits in cucumber plants and alternate appearances of branches in Cecropia trees. The model was calibrated from experimental data collected on these plants. It shows that a simple feedback hypothesis of trophic control on plant structure allows the emergence of cyclic patterns corresponding to the observed ones.

Résumé : 1. Trade-offs among functional traits reveal major plant strategies that can give insight into species distributions and ecosystem processes. However, current identification of plant strategies lacks the integration of root structural traits together with leaf and stem traits. 2. We examined correlations among 14 traits representing leaf, stem and woody root tissues. Traits were measured on 1084 individuals representing 758 Neotropical tree species, across 13 sites representative of the environmental variation encompassed by three widespread habitats (seasonally flooded, clay terra firme and white-sand forests) at opposite ends of Amazonia (French Guiana and Peru). 3. Woody root traits were closely aligned with stem traits, but not with leaf traits. Altogether leaf, stem and woody root traits delineated two orthogonal axes of functional trade-offs: a first axis defined by leaf traits, corresponding to a leaf economics spectrum, and a second axis defined by covarying stem and woody root traits, corresponding to a wood economics spectrum. These axes remained consistent when accounting for species evolutionary history with phylogenetically independent contrasts. 4. Despite the strong species turnover across sites, the covariation among root and stem structural traits as well as their orthogonality to leaf traits were strongly consistent across habitats and regions. 5. We conclude that root structural traits mirrored stem traits rather than leaf traits in Neotropical trees. Leaf and wood traits define an integrated whole-plant strategy in lowland South American forests that may contribute to a more complete understanding of plant responses to global changes in both correlative and modelling approaches. We suggest further meta-analyses in expanded environmental and geographic zones to determine the generality of this pattern.

Context : Functional - structural models (FSM) of tree growth have great potential in forestry, but their development, calibration and validation are hampered by the difficulty of collecting experimental data at organ scale for adult trees. Due to their simple architecture and morphological properties, " model plants " such as Cecropia sciadophylla are of great interest to validate new models and methodologies, since exhaustive descriptions of their plant structure and mass partitioning can be gathered. * Aims : Our objective was to develop a model-based approach to analysing the influence of environmental conditions on the dynamics of trophic competition within C. sciadophylla trees. * Methods : We defined an integrated environmental factor that includes meteorological medium-frequency variations and a relative index representing the local site conditions for each plant. This index is estimated based on model inversion of the GreenLab FSM using data from 11 trees for model calibration and 7 trees for model evaluation. * Results : The resulting model explained the dynamics of biomass allocation to different organs during the plant growth, according to the environmental pressure they experienced. * Perspectives : By linking the integrated environmental factor to a competition index, an extension of the model to the population level could be considered.

Over the past decade, much attention has been devoted to the development of forest biomass estimation methods at a stand scale, leading to the establishment of allometric models (Chave et al., 2014). These allometric equations use a unique wood specific gravity value (WSG) per species, but neglect the within tree variations of WSG found by others (Wiemann & Williamson, 1989).The main objectives of this study are (1) to illustrate the diversity of radial (from pith to bark) and longitudinal (from bottom to top) patterns of WSG variation within and between species, (2) to highlight different trends of WSG radial variations and the possible misinterpretations of these trends due to the effect of heartwood and (3) to link these variations and patterns to the successional status of the species (from pioneer to sciaphilic species).We sampled 33 small trees (10 Wood sciences underpinning tropical ecology and management. Domestication can influence many functional traits in plants, from overall life-history and growth form to wood density and cell wall ultrastructure. Such changes can increase fitness of the domesticate in agricultural environments but may negatively affect survival in the wild. We studied effects of domestication on stem biomechanics in manioc by comparing domesticated and ancestral wild taxa from two different regions of greater Amazonia. We compared mechanical properties, tissue organisation and wood characteristics including microfibril angles in both wild and domesticated plants, each growing in two different habitats (forest or savannah) and varying in growth form (shrub or liana). Wild taxa grew as shrubs in open savannah but as lianas in overgrown and forested habitats. Growth form plasticity was retained in domesticated manioc. However, stems of the domesticate showed brittle failure. Wild plants differed in mechanical architecture between shrub and liana phenotypes, a difference that diminished between shrubs and lianas of the domesticate. Stems of wild plants were generally stiffer, failed at higher bending stresses and were less prone to brittle fracture compared with shrub and liana phenotypes of the domesticate. Biomechanical differences between stems of wild and domesticated plants were mainly due to changes in wood density and cellulose microfibril angle rather than changes in secondary growth or tissue geometry. Domestication did not significantly modify "large-scale" trait development or growth form plasticity, since both wild and domesticated manioc can develop as shrubs or lianas. However, "finer-scale" developmental traits crucial to mechanical stability and thus ecological success of the plant were significantly modified. This profoundly influenced the likelihood of brittle failure, particularly in long climbing stems, thereby also influencing the survival of the domesticate in natural situations vulnerable to mechanical perturbation. We discuss the different selective pressures that could explain evolutionary modifications of stem biomechanical properties under domestication in manioc.
