Description : Maurice Belrose (Professeur émérite, Université des Antilles), propose une réflexion à partir du roman de Manuel Díaz Rodríguez, Peregrina o El Pozo encantado (1922). L'auteur présente un lieu qui a des caractéristiques éminentes caribéennes mais l'auteur ne se sent pas caribéen, le roman ne comporte aucune référence à la Caraïbe. D'où l'intérêt de l'analyse de ce roman, avec la vallée de Caracas, dans un pays, le Venezuela qui a une réalité qu'on peut identifier comme caribéenne. La réflexion s'ouvre donc sur ce roman dans lequel il est question d'un pays de la Caraïbe mais dans lequel la Caraïbe n'apparaît pas comme telle. L'auteur n'a aucune conscience que ce Venezuela qui appartient à la Caraïbe. D'où le questionnement : que veut dire exactement la Caraïbe ou les Caraïbes ?

Clarke’s Court, operated by Grenada Distillers Limited, is a rum distillery located in Woodlands Valley, Saint George, Grenada and has been in operation since 1937. Clarke’s Court is also the island’s largest distillery. This image shows a pile of sugar cane husks on the grounds of Clarke’s Court. One of the factory buildings with a zinc roof has steel drums inside lined against its wire fence. Slide labeled Rum Factory Grenada.

Abstract The continuous record of large surface-rupturing earthquakes along the Dead Sea fault brings unprecedented insights for paleoseismic and archaeoseismic research. In most recent studies, paleoseismic trenching documents the late Holocene faulting activity, while tectonic geomorphology addresses the long-term behavior (>10 ka), with a tendency to smooth the effect of individual earthquake rupture events (Mw >7). Here, we combine historical, archaeological, and paleoseismic investigations to build a consolidated catalog of destructive surface-rupturing earthquakes for the last 14 ka along the left-lateral Jordan Valley fault segment. The 120- km-long fault segment limited to the north and the south by major pull-apart basins (the Hula and the Dead Sea, respectively) is mapped in detail and shows five subsegments with narrow stepovers (width < 3 km). We conducted quantitative geomorphology along the fault, measured more than 20 offset drainages, excavated four trenches at two sites, and investigated archaeological sites with seismic damage in the Jordan Valley. Our results in paleoseismic trenching with 28 radiocarbon datings and the archaeoseismology at Tell Saydiyeh, supplemented with a rich historical seismic record, document 12 surface-rupturing events along the fault segment with a mean interval of ∼1160 yr and an average 5 mm=yr slip rate for the last 25 ka. The most complete part of the catalog indicates recurrence intervals that vary from 280 yr to 1500 yr, with a median value of 790 yr, and suggests an episodic behavior for the Jordan Valley fault. Our study allows a better constraint of the seismic cycle and related short-term variations (late Holocene) versus long-term behavior (Holocene and late Pleistocene) of a major continental transform fault.

Description : Dans cette communication, Dominique Cardon, sociologue au Laboratoire des usages d'Orange Labs et professeur associé à l'université de Marne la Vallée, propose une réflexion sur les propriétés organisationnelles, et notamment algorithmiques, de l'espace public numérique. Comment les calculateurs du web produisent-ils la visibilité numérique ? A partir de quels principes le PageRank de Google, les métriques du web social ou les outils de recommandation décident-ils de donner la prééminence à telle information plutôt qu'à telle autre ? On cherchera notamment à tirer des conséquences des transformations des épistémologies statistiques mises en oeuvre par les algorithmes du web avec la généralisation des techniques d'apprentissage (machine learning). Le web que nous connaissons ne serait pas le même s'il n'avait pas été profondément nourri, domestiqué et organisé par l'algorithme qui le classe, le PageRank de Google. C'est parce que ces documents s'adressent entre eux des liens de reconnaissance que la métrique du PageRank a pu construire une représentation de l'information proche de celles qui prévalaient dans l'espace public traditionnel. Cependant, d'autres formes de métriques de l'information se sont aujourd'hui généralisées avec les compteurs réputationnels du web social et les techniques de recommandation personnalisées. Aussi est-il utile de dégager les différentes formes du calcul qui sont aujourd'hui au principe de la construction des métriques du web afin de proposer une lecture de la manière dont elles enferment des représentations différentes des individus et de leur place dans nos sociétés.
